The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

Common Mitsubishi Outlander phev problems

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has been a popular choice for those looking for a hybrid SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • ECU Relay Overheating: On examples made between 5 December 2014 and 31 March 2016, a relay for the ECU might overheat, causing the engine to stall. Affected Outlanders will need to have the relay replaced to fix the issue.
  • Parking Brake Corrosion: The parking brake caliper boot could let in water and lead to corrosion and reduced effectiveness of the parking brake on Outlanders made from the start of production until 21 January 2016. Any affected example will need to be inspected by a technician at a dealership.
  • ESP Braking Function Interruption: Some examples made between 4 August 2016 and 22 January 2018 could have an interruption in the braking function used as part of the electronic stability program (ESP), which could affect various driving assistance systems. A software update will need to be performed to solve the problem.
  • Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) Software Problem: A software problem identified with some examples equipped with AEB and built between 5 August 2016 and 6 November 2017 requires an update at the dealership to sort it.
  • Airflow Sensor Corrosion: Corrosion on the airflow sensor could wreak havoc with the running of the engine, affecting early Outlanders. This issue should have been sorted by now, but it's recommended to speak with a Mitsubishi dealer to check.
  • Fuel Leak: A problem with a connection in the fuel system could allow fuel to leak out of examples constructed from 21 July to 12 September 2015. This will need to be inspected by a technician at a Mitsubishi dealer.
  • Battery Degradation: Some owners have reported battery degradation issues, with the battery range seemingly reducing over time. Mitsubishi's response is that it is most likely the car learning how the driver drives and adapting the predicted range accordingly.
  • Infotainment System: The infotainment system on higher-spec models is far from intuitive to use, and some owners have reported a fault with connecting iPhones to the system via Bluetooth. Upgrading to Apple’s latest iOS software should resolve this.
  • Large Flap Covering the Charging Sockets: The large flap covering the charging sockets has been known to bend or for clips to fall off, making it difficult to close easily.

While these issues may seem concerning, it's important to note that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has proven to be a very robust car overall. The key is to ensure that the vehicle has been well cared for and to address any potential issues promptly by speaking with a Mitsubishi dealer.

  • VIN: JA4AZ3A38KZ

  • Summary: I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.

  • Date Complaint: 2021-04-26
  • VIN: JA4AZ3A31KZ
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. ON FRIDAY, APRIL 23, 2021 PASSENGERS BEGAN TO COMPLAIN THAT THE RIGHT-SIDE SEAT BELT (ON THE 2ND ROW OF SEATS) WOULD NOT FASTEN. AFTER ARRANGING FOR PEOPLE TO MOVE AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE (LEFT-HAND SEAT) FOR A WHILE, I FINALLY QUIT DRIVING TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE MYSELF. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR THE BUCKLE, I GAVE UP AND STARTED CALLING AROUND FOR THE PART--BUT COULD NOT FIND IT. FINALLY I NOTICED A RECALL NOTICE ONLINE FOR THIS EXACT SAME ISSUE IN 2014-2019 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDERS. ON MONDAY (APRIL 26) I CALLED SCOTT ELDER MITSUBISHI IN CEDAR PARK, TEXAS TO SCHEDULE THE RECALL REPAIR, BUT WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THEY ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE PART AND COULD NOT OBTAIN ONE FOR AT LEAST A WEEK. I THEN CALLED THE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY TO LEARN WHY MY VEHICLE IS NOT COVERED FOR THE RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT IS A 2019 AND HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. THEY COULD NOT GIVE ME A SATISFACTORY ANSWER, NOR ANY ALTERNATIVE RECOURSE TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE. AS STATED ABOVE, I AM A RIDESHARE DRIVER. I CANNOT DO MY JOB WITH AN UNUSABLE SEAT BELT. SWITCHING PASSENGERS TO THE OTHER SEAT WON'T ALWAYS WORK BECAUSE I OFTEN PICK UP 3 OR MORE PASSENGERS. EACH DAY I AM WITHOUT THE USE OF THE VEHICLE FOR WORK IS COSTING ME $250-$300 PER DAY (NOT COUNTING BONUSES).

Latest negative Mitsubishi Outlander phev car reviews

  1. Immanuel Cartwright 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2022

I am rating the vehicle 2 stars for the following reasons: Only Mitsubishi dealers can service the vehicle, and there are very limited numbers of dealers in Central and Northern Canada. The gas engine does not properly run at -30° Celsius. The battery and circuits freeze at -20° Celsius and below, which does not allow the vehicle to start properly, if at all (even after being plugged in for one week straight). The catalytic converter already requires a full replacement (although it will be completed at no cost to me under warranty) despite only having 1,750 km of mostly highway driving. The plastic charge port covers are extremely brittle and snapped on the first use, costing $685 for just the part as it only comes in a package, and is not covered under warranty. Fuel economy is generally good, around 7 L/100 km. The technology in the GT model is fantastic, with the only complaint being the lack of wireless charging. The adaptive cruise control is fantastic and cuts out when the system senses loss of traction (in my case, a very deep puddle of water on the passenger side).

  2. Tyson Koepp 2024-11-26

    Vehicle year: 2022

Pros: The vehicle boasts quality materials and an enormous cargo space, all at a good price point after incentives. However, it's worth noting that the acceleration may feel sluggish and there may not be enough front leg room for taller individuals. Additionally, the battery range is quite limited.

I purchased the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Model 2019 from Surrey Mitsubishi in December 2019. Unfortunately, the vehicle has some manufacturing defects that have caused it to malfunction. Despite taking it to the dealership twice, the issue has not been resolved and I am currently unable to use the PHEV feature due to the vehicle not charging. I have expressed my concerns to both the dealership and the manufacturer, but have yet to receive a satisfactory response or solution. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in resolving this issue.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, I would recommend considering other options besides the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. While I was initially drawn to this car for its innovative green technology and the promise of high mpg/gallon and a federal tax incentive, I have found that the 100% electronic controls can be frustrating to navigate. However, with some time and patience, you can adapt to the new driving experience. I did have a concerning incident where the car began to reverse without a driver due to a misunderstanding with the charger, which resulted in some damage to my property. While Mitsubishi was not as helpful as I would have liked, I was able to file a claim with my insurance company for the damages. Additionally, I experienced a fuel system malfunction that required a software upgrade, which was inconvenient but ultimately resolved. Overall, I believe that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has some room for improvement before it is ready for widespread sales, but I appreciate the company's efforts to innovate in the green technology space.Let me tell you about the gas mileage. The car can get anywhere from 14-100mpg, with 50-100mpg on the freeway during a long road trip. However, the gas tank is small, so you'll need to fill up frequently. This car may not be the best choice for long commutes or road trips. Additionally, the gasoline engine is not very efficient. If you're considering purchasing a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, keep in mind that it may be an overpriced and poorly tested software package. It's important to live close to a dealership, as not many people know how to work on the car.

    Vehicle year: 2018

I'm so glad I got a 2018 Outlander PHEV at an amazing deal! This vehicle has been a life-saver for me. It's been almost 2 months and I haven't had to refill the gas yet. With my driving, I can solely rely on the battery, which has saved me a lot of money. We all know how bad traffic can be, but with my HOV sticker, my commutes to work have been cut in half. I don't have to spend hours in traffic on the 91 anymore. Plus, when I go somewhere that uses toll roads, I take advantage of those toll discounts. It's been such a great experience so far!

  2. Westley Keebler 2025-03-28

    Vehicle year: 2019

On December 30th, I went to the dealer and traded in my Prius. I am absolutely thrilled with my purchase! The car has 5 braking modes that can stop the car by itself, and 3 driving modes. If you're ever confused, just let the computer do its job - it's way better! The instant pickup is great (not like a sports car), and the mileage is good. The cabin is well-insulated, so you don't hear any road noise. It handles better in corners, and I'm enjoying driving it more and more every day. Just keep in mind that it's a regular SUV meant for daily commutes. I drive 20 miles one way daily.

  3. Jedidiah Ferry 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2018

We are thrilled with this vehicle overall. It offers great value, especially when you consider all the federal, state, and local rebates that come with it. Compared to other crossover SUVs with hybrid or electric technology, it is priced very competitively. Although some corners were cut to lower the cost, such as the quality of some of the interior elements, they seem minor to us. The only thing we wish could be improved are the front seats, which can be uncomfortable for longer drives. We plan to use a lumbar support pillow for our next road trip to alleviate any discomfort. The battery range for EV-only driving is good at around 20 miles, and we appreciate the balance between battery size and cargo space. The cargo space is ample, and we also appreciate the safety features on the SEL model. The vehicle accelerates smoothly and switches between EV and gas mode seamlessly and quietly. The car looks great too, although we would prefer to lose the huge PHEV stickers on the sides. We are surprised that it took so long to arrive in the US after receiving excellent reviews and sales in Europe, but we are delighted that it is finally here!

Highlights: This SUV is amazing! My wife and I use it for daily errands and we only need to charge it once we get back home. On a single gas tank, we can travel between 750 to 1,000 miles! It's the perfect combination of size, price, and real MPG. We recently took a long trip from Miami to NC and the safety features on our GT were incredibly helpful while driving. The adaptive auto pilot and automatic high beams are two features that I cannot imagine driving without. Additionally, the automatic wipers were a great help during the heavy rains in South Florida. The only downside is that on most days of the year, when the temperature is over 90 degrees, my kids complain about the lack of a rear AC vent and I have to put the fan on high all the time.

I am a loyal Mitsubishi customer and this is my 5th Mitsubishi, 1st new Mitsubishi, and 3rd Outlander. I have owned other cars inclusive Toyota, Honda, Subaru, VW, and Mercury but time after time Mitsubishi wins when I calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (purchase price, the expense to run, and depreciation) for different vehicles. Mitsubishi's have the best value compared to other cars. When buying a car, I focus on customer reviews, what I want in a vehicle, reliability, and the financial reality of operating the vehicle. This makes the decision process much easier since you are buying a car based on your needs and real-world usage. I find both Edmunds and Fueleconomy.gov give you access to the best customer reviews/real-world usage information. If you read the professional reviews you would be led to believe the Outlander PHEV has limited range, gets poor gas mileage when the battery runs out, is slow, and loud. However, I have found the opposite on all accounts when compared with both my gas Outlander and other Hybrids or PHEV that are rated higher. My review below points out real-life usage over a year that debunks the negative comments by the professionals. Over the last year, I am getting 59 MPG for all of my drives which is double the MPG I had on my old gas Outlander. I work from home so my driving habits are the ideal match for a PHEV. Most of my drives are short local trips of approx 30/50 miles and I charge my car after almost every local trip. The Outlander PHEV is more flexible than an EV with great tax credits. I highly recommend Mitsubishi's Outlander PHEV for anyone looking for a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective vehicle.I am getting 60 to 100 MPG for local driving, which means a tank of gas lasts me over two weeks, and I can travel 700 to 1,000 miles on a single tank. During long trips, I get 32 to 40 MPG and a range of 250 to 350 miles, depending on the weather. The battery operates more efficiently in temperate climates, and not using the heat or AC reduces the draw on the battery. Having a PHEV on long trips takes away any range anxiety and is more efficient than most vehicles on the road. I have found that long trips provide few opportunities to charge due to availability, time, cost, and ease. However, with a PHEV, charging is convenient and easy. Even in urban locations, charging options tend to be out of the way, full, or cost more than gas. On my longer trips, I use its default hybrid mode, which gives me great MPG (36-42) and range (350-400 mi). Home charging has been easy and affordable, costing around 80 cents for a full charge, and I get 20 to 30 miles on the charge. When it's warmer, I have gotten as high as 40 miles per charge, but I constantly get 30 miles driving on local suburban/country roads when not using heat or AC. When you compare the cost of home charging to fuel cost, you save over $2 per trip. I ran the numbers and found that I am saving over $500 per year on fueling my car with electricity and gas. This number takes into account both my home electric and fuel costs. Additionally, the tax credit makes the value of the car even more obvious. The Outlander is a great car to drive, offering comfort, quietness, and versatility for any distance, weather, or terrain. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it still has plenty of power when you need it, and you can always take it out of ECO mode for an extra boost. It comes with all the high-end features you need without being too flashy. What sets the Outlander apart is that it's a car first, with technology that enhances the driving experience. Unlike some other cars that prioritize technology over driving, the Outlander is a quality car that will save you money and make driving enjoyable. If you're in the market for a PHEV SUV or car, you should definitely check out the Outlander. It's one of the few PHEV SUVs on the market and the only one in its price range, making it a top contender. I highly recommend making the leap to an Outlander PHEV, as it truly stands out from the competition.
