1998 Mitsubishi Diamante problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Diamante is an automobile that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1990 to 2005.

The first series was a hardtop introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989. It went on sale in Japan exclusively in May 1990 and won that year's Japan Car of the Year award. It was created by splicing an extra 6.6 cm (2.6 in) right down the middle of the Mitsubishi Galant, which itself had won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1987. The Diamante's platform was also used for the sporty Mitsubishi 3000GT.

The name Diamante was derived from the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian word for "diamond" and was adopted also as homage to the Mitsubishi badge which is composed of three diamonds. In Japan, this vehicle was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Common 1998 Mitsubishi Diamante problems

The Mitsubishi Diamante, produced in 1998, is known for its unique styling and luxury features. However, like any vehicle, it has certain common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common issues with the 1998 Mitsubishi Diamante is premature automatic transmission failure. This problem can lead to costly repairs and may affect the overall reliability of the vehicle.

Another issue that some owners have reported is problems with the ignition system, specifically with the ignition coils

. This can cause a no-start condition, where the engine cranks but does not start. The video tip suggests checking for power at the coils and tracing the black and white wire for any issues. If a coil is shorted, it may cause the 10-amp fuse to blow.

The Mitsubishi Diamante also has some issues with the electrical systems, including problems with the wiring and connectors. MotorData Professional, a diagnostic software for Mitsubishi cars, provides color wiring diagrams with the possibility of tracing wires, a complete reference book of typical malfunctions of Japanese models, and control unit pinouts, among other features. This software can help diagnose and repair electrical issues in the Diamante.

In addition to these specific issues, the Mitsubishi Diamante has faced some challenges in the US market, including sluggish sales and a lack of support from the manufacturer. This has led to dealerships selling the Diamante alongside other brands, which may affect the overall image and reputation of the vehicle.

In conclusion, while the Mitsubishi Diamante has some common problems that owners have reported, it is still a unique and luxurious vehicle with a lot to offer. With proper maintenance and care, these issues can be addressed, and the Diamante can provide a comfortable and reliable driving experience.

Why did Mitsubishi discontinue the Diamante?

The Diamante was a popular car among buyers who were looking for a comfortable and stylish luxury sedan. It was not as popular as some rivals, such as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, but it was a good value for money car. The Diamante was discontinued in 2005 due to declining sales.

What engine is in a Mitsubishi Diamante?

The Diamante was marginally larger with improved headroom. It was powered by several engines: the base engine was a 2.5-liter MVV (lean burn) V6, followed by a number of 2.5 and 3.5-liter variants, the 2.5-liter engine sported 175 hp and the 3.5-liter engine boasted 210 hp (160 kW).

Why won't my Mitsubishi Diamante start?

The most common reasons a Mitsubishi Diamante won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-08-21
  • VIN: 6MMAP37P0WT
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE HEATER CORE HAS STARTED TO LEAK. IT WAS REPLACED 40K MILES AGO AND I WAS CHARGED $ 1,000 FOR REPAIR COSTS. HAVING RESEARCHED THIS, IT IS DUE TO FAULTY HEATER CORE GASKETS WHICH MITSUBISHI REPLACED THE DEFECTIVE GASKETS WITH A REDESIGNED ONE. THE CAR IS UNDRIVABLE DUE TO THE TOXIC FUMES FROM THE ETHYLENE GLYCOL COMING OUT OF ALL THE VENTS AND I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO GET IT REPAIRED. MITSUBISHI REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, AND NEARLY EVERY DIAMANTE ON THE ROAD HAS HAD THIS HAPPEN. THE CARPET IS RUINED FROM THE COOLANT LEAK AS WELL, AND MANY HAVE HAD THE ECU FOR THE TRANSMISSION FAIL DUE TO COOLANT LEAKING ON IT. *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-11-30
  • VIN: 6MMAP57P1WT
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VISIBILITY,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I OWN A PREOWNED 1998 MISTUBISHI DIAMANTE LS. WHEN THE CLIMATE CONTROL, PARTICULARLY THE HEATER IS ENGAGED, THE SMELL OF ANTI-FREEZE BECOMES QUITE APPARENT. DEALER CLAIMED 2 YEARS AGO WHEN I BOUGHT IT THAT IT WAS THE SMELL OF THE CHEMICALS USED TO CLEAN THE CAR DURING "MAKE-READY." ETHYLEN GLYCOL FUMES ARE TOXIC AND THIS IS A REOCCURING DEFECT IN THIS MODEL CAR FROM POSTS I HAVE SEEN ON VARIOUS WEBSITES. I WAS LATER TOLD THAT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WILL COST CLOSE TO $1000 SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY. MITSUBISH ISSUED A TSB ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM, OBVIOUSLY THEY ARE AWARE OF IT. IN ADDITION, THE WINDSHIELD IS COVERED WITH A FILM THAT CANNOT BE WASHED OFF FROM THIS LEAK. A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM, I AM NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT ON YOUR WEBSITE. THANK YOU.*AK

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-05-15
  • VIN: 6MMAP37P2WT
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: THIS IS A MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE 1998 ES. I'M EXPERIENCING PUNGENT SMELL OF ANTI-FREEZE INSIDE THE CAR AS SOON AS I TURN ON HEATING. THE DEALER I GOT THE PREOWNED CAR FROM WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM UNLESS I CAN SHOW THEM THE LEAK IN HEATER CORE. ANTI-FREEZE CONTAINS ETHYLENE GLYCON AND THE FUMES ARE HIGHLY TOXIC. FIXING THE THE HEATER CORE WILL COST $1000. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO ASCERTAIN THAT THIS IS A VERY VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE AND MITSUBISHI MOTORS SHOULD BE AWARE OF THREE MAIN RISK ASSOCIATED WITH THIS: (1) THE DEFECT EXPOSES CUSTOMERS TO UNUSUAL LEVEL OF TOXIC ETHYLENE GLYCOL WHICH SHOULD NOT EXCEED 10-25 PPM LEVELS (CONSULT MSDS FOR ETHYLENE GLYCOL) (2) THE LEAK CAN AFFECT THE CAR'S MICROPROCESSOR AND POSES A SEVERE HAZARD FOR DRIVERS. (3) FAULTY HEATER CORE MAKES THE VISIBILITY DIFFICULT DUE TO FOGGING OF WIND SHIELD THUS PUTTING THE DRIVER AT GREATER RISK. I WILL EVENTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEM BY SPENDING $1000 AFTER THE SUMMER IF MITSUBISHI REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL. RIGHT NOW I AM TRYING SOME RADIATOR ANTI-LEAK TO DELAY THE COSTLY REPAIR. BUT I WANT NHTSA TO BE AWARE OF THE HAZARDS THAT HAS BEEN IGNORED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *LA

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned some transmission issues. Could you please provide more details about what's going on? I'd be happy to help you troubleshoot and find a solution!

  2. Remington Witting 2024-06-08

The 1998 Mitsubishi Diamante is a great entry-level luxury car. It boasts over 200 horsepower, a comfortable ride, spacious interior, and stylish design reminiscent of older BMW models. Despite a slight shimmy and some noise from the air conditioning at stops, it remains a comfortable and enjoyable ride. While I have noticed some transmission slipping at 85,000 miles and had to replace the heater core, I have not had to make any other major repairs in six years. Overall, it's a great car that I would highly recommend!

Positive 1998 Mitsubishi Diamante car reviews

  1. Desmond Beatty 2025-01-03

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share a story with you about my Diamante. Last weekend, while driving on a raised interstate, I hit a patch of black ice while taking a turn. My car spun out of control and hit a concrete sidewall at about 35-40 MPH. Despite the scary situation, my two passengers and I are all okay! The car still drives straight and has no mechanical problems. The only damage is to the bumpers and lights. I'm so grateful for this solid and safe car!

  2. Nickolas Frami 2024-11-15

This is one of the best cars I have ever owned, except for the occasional quirk when the transmission shifts to 2nd gear. It has been a reliable vehicle with great gas mileage and no maintenance issues. I purchased it in 2000 with 37,000 miles and have driven it up to 98,000 miles with many more years to come.

  3. Jarrell Murray 2024-09-16

The car has experienced some transmission issues, such as a noticeable jerk at certain speeds. Fortunately, the driver door was fixed under warranty. Overall, there are no other significant problems to report. Despite these minor issues, I still have a great appreciation for this car. However, I have decided not to purchase this particular model again.

  4. Kamryn Jaskolski 2024-08-22

Hi there! I recently purchased a 98 Diamante with 156K miles on it and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any maintenance issues in the few months that I've owned it. The only minor problem I've encountered is that the antenna makes a strange noise when I turn on the radio and doesn't go down when I turn it off. Additionally, the paint in the back is starting to oxidize, but I believe this is due to the previous owner neglecting to wax it properly. Overall, I find it to be a really enjoyable car to drive with a luxurious feel. I would definitely recommend considering one for your next purchase!

  5. Nels Leuschke 2024-07-27

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've only had to replace the brakes, tires, and battery on this vehicle. The original tires and brakes only lasted for 24000 miles, but the aftermarket brakes are still in the front and were replaced in the rear 200 miles ago. The aftermarket tires still have over 50% of the tread left. All in all, it's been a great car!
