2002 Mercury Villager problems
The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.
Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.
The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-04-25
- VIN: 4M2ZU66K12Z
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26TH 2007 AT 7AM I TOOK MY 2002 MERCURY MOUNTAINEER TO DUNCANVILLE FORD TO HAVE THE LIFT GATE REPAIRED. THE LEFT HINGE BOLT BROKE, DETACHING THE HINGE, WHICH LEFT MY HATCHBACK HANGING BY THE RIGHT HINGE. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT DUNCANVILLE FORD REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT MY VEHICLE WITHOUT CHARGING ME A $47 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. WHEN I TOLD HIM THE BACK GATE WAS GOING TO FALL AND BREAK, HE TOLD ME TO PULL MY TRUCK INTO THE SERVICE BAY, THE CHARGE IS $47 AND THAT DID NOT INCLUDE REPAIR COSTS. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A LOCAL BODY SHOP TO REPAIR. THE BODY SHOP REPLACED THE LEFT LIFTGATE HINGE, BUT DUE TO THE ENTIRE WEIGHT OF THE HATCH RESTING ON THE RIGHT HINGE, IT BENT AS WELL. I DROVE TO GRAND PRAIRIE FORD TO PURCHASE THE PART AT WHICH TIME I WAS TOLD ABOUT THE RECALL. I WAS ADVISED TO TAKE MY VEHICLE BACK TO DUNCANVILLE FORD SO THEY COULD REPAIR THE LIFTGATE HINGE AND CHECK THE STRUTS FOR DAMAGE, WHICH WERE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL NOTIFICATION. THE BODY SHOP ATTACHED THE HINGE (WITHOUT THE EPOXY) SO THE HATCH WOULD NOT FALL OFF AND I RETURNED TO DUNCANVILLE FORD. I ASKED HIM WHY WASN'T I TOLD ABOUT THE RECALL WHEN I ARRIVED IN THE MORNING AND HIS RESPONSE WAS, MAYBE THE SERVICE MANAGER DID NOT KNOW ABOUT THE RECALL. I FIND THAT HARD TO BELIEVE. ACCORDING TO THE NHTSA, THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS ON THE HATCHBACK, LIFTGATE, AND LIFTGATE GLASS ON FORD VEHICLES ALMOST EVERY YEAR SINCE 1992. SINCE THIS IS AN ON GOING ISSUE ON FORD VEHICLES FOR PAST 15 YEARS, IT SEEMS REASONABLE THAT THE SERVICE MANAGER WOULD REMEMBER THAT. AT A MINIMUM, FROM A CUSTOMER SERVICE STANDPOINT, IT SEEMS HE WOULD HAVE AT LEAST LOOKED AT MY VEHICLE AND INPUT MY VIN TO ENSURE THAT THERE WERE NO EXISTING RECALLS PRIOR TO DISCUSSING ANY SERVICE FEES WITH ME. DUE TO ALL THE STRESS ON THAT ONE HINGE, MY LIFT GATE HAS CRACKED AND NEED TO BE REPAIRED AS WELL. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-04-01
- VIN: 1MEFM55SX2G
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: FRONT SPRING ON 2002 SABLE BROKE WHILE SITTING IN DRIVEWAY, ONLY 83,000 MILES. FORD MOTOR WILL NOT HELP TO REPLACE AT NO CHARGE, OR REPLACE THE $120 TIRE THAT THE BROKEN SPRING PUNCTURED. PREVIOUSLY 3 YEARS , 99-0, ) WERE RECALLED DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, AND FORD STILL WON'T REPLACE THEM FOR ME, AFTER FAILURE. IT WAS LUCKY IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE ROAD BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND BEEN IN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT, COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR CAUSED ANOTHER PERSONS SERIOUS INJURY OR WORSE. FORD MOTOR HAS NOT INFORMED ME OF THIS PROBLEM. THEY WOULD ASSIST ME, BUT DUE TO PREVIOUS DEFECTS WITH THE ENGINE IN THIS VEHICLE THAT CAUSED IT TO IDLE SO HARD THAT IT WOULD STALL WHEN STOPPED AT A LIGHT, AT ONLY 3000 MILES. THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT HELP WITH THIS ADDITIONAL PROBLEM. *AK

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-11-21
- VIN: 4M2ZV11T92D
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: DURING A VACATION TRIP ON NOVEMBER 21, 2006, THE "PROPORTIONAL VALVE" ON OUR 2002 MERCURY VILLAGER BEGAN TO APPLY THE BRAKES WHILE WE WERE ON THE INTERSTATE. THERE WAS NO WARNING LIGHT, JUST A GRADUAL INCREASE IN THE POWER NECESSARY TO KEEP GOING. BY THE TIME WE REALIZED IT, THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM HAD OVERHEATED, RESULTING IN OVER $1,000 IN DEALER REPAIRS. OUR CONTENTION IS THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND THE VEHICLE SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED FOR SOME FORM OF REIMBURSEMENT. WE ALSO WANTED TO MAKE THE NHTSA AWARE OF THIS IN CASE OTHER CONSUMERS ENCOUNTER SIMILAR PROBLEMS. AS IT WAS, THE ENTIRE COST OF THE REPAIR WAS FOR OUR ACCOUNT. *NM
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- VIN: 4M2ZV12T82D
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: WE PURCHASED A USED (28K MILES) 2002 MERCURY VILLAGER IN 8'06. AS I LATER FOUND OUT THIS IS A SISTER TO THE NISSAN QUEST. WITHIN 2 MONTHS IT STARTED TO HAVE PERIODIC STARTING PROBLEMS - MEANING ALL POWER SEEMED OK, BUT WHEN THE KEY WAS TURNED, ONLY A CLICKING SOUND WAS HEARD. WE DISCOVERED SOMETIMES THIS COULD BE CORRECTED BY OPENING & CLOSING THE DOORS, OR CYCLING THE LOCKS. AFTER SEARCHING THE WEB I FOUND OTHERS WITH WHAT APPEARED TO BE A SIMILAR PROBLEM AND WHAT OTHERS CLAIMED THE FIX WAS. IT SEEMS AN ANTI-THEFT IGNITION INHIBIT RELAY IS THE CULPRIT. IT SEEMS TO ME FAILURE OF THIS RELAY SHOULD BE BE IN A FAIL-SAFE FASHION. NONETHELESS, IS THERE A FACTORY TSB FOR THIS ISSUE FROM MERCURY OR NISSAN? IS THERE A PART AVAILABLE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM? ALREADY MY WIFE AND KIDS HAVE BEEN STRANDED DUE TO THIS PROBLEM AND I IMAGINE SOMEONE SOMEWHERE MAY HAVE AN ACTUAL EMERGENCY. *NM

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-04-04
- VIN: 4M2ZV12T12D
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME USING CRUISE CONTROL, THE SPEEDOMETER SUDDENLY FAILED AT AN APPROXIMATE ODOMETER READING OF 61,000 MILES. THE SPEEDOMETER HAD ALSO FAILED ON MY PREVIOUSLY OWNED '93 VILLAGER FOR SHORT PERIODS BUT THE CURRENT FAILURE ON MY '02 VILLAGER CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE FOLLOWING 7 HOURS OF MY TRIP HOME. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" INDICATOR LIT UP AND THE ENGINE NOW BRIEFLY LOSES POWER UPON STARTUP AND INITIAL ACCELERATION. I WILL CALL DEALERSHIP IN THE MORNING TO SEE IF THIS PROBLEM IS COVERED. I AM VERY UPSET THAT MY RELATIVELY YOUNG VAN HAS NOW LOST VALUE DUE TO UNCERTIFIED MILEAGE ON THE TITLE WHEN I WANT TO SELL IT. BECAUSE IT HAPPENED IN THE MIDST OF MY TRIP, I WAS DELAYED WHILE CHECKING THE SOURCE OF THE INDICATOR LIGHT AND HAD TO DRIVE HOME WITHOUT KNOWING MY TRUE SPEED. *JB

I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY WOULD NOT HELP ME OUT IN ANY WAY WITH THE EXPENSES. I WAS TOLD BY THE TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT THEY ARE STARTING TO SEE SEVERAL TRANSMISSIONS GO BAD AT A VERY LOW MILAGE THAT HAS THE TRANSMISSION 5R55W IN IT. I STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE A FORD RECALL.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-08-31

- Summary: THE VECHICLE HESITATES AND BUCKS WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A DEAD STOP SUCH AS A STOP SIGN/TRAFFIC LIGHT OR INCREASING SPEED TO PASS OR GO UP HILL. WE HAVE REPEATEDLY COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP FROM THE TIME OF PURCHASE. PRIOR TO JUNE THEY TOLD US NOTHING WAS WRONG BUT THIS PAST MONTH THEY DID A DOWNLOAD. IT WORKED PROPERLY FOR 1-2 DAYS. WE'VE HEARD THE SAME COMPLAINT FROM OTHERS. OUR FEAR IS THAT ONE DAY WE WILL GET IN AN ACCIDENT IF IT DIES ALL TOGETHER IN THE MIDDLE OF ENTERING A STREET OR PASSING SOMEONE ON THE HIGHWAY. THE LIFTGATE DID SHATTER IN MY SON'S FACE IN MARCH '04. THE DEALERSHIP AT THE TIME DENIED IT WAS A RECALL AND WE HAD TO FIGHT WITH THEM FOR A LONG TIME AS WELL.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-27
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: CRACK APPEARED UNDER REAR GLASS. HAD REPORTED TO HAVE RECALL ADDRESSED CONCERNING LIFT-GATE PER RECALL LETTER. TRUCK WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY AT THAT TIME. I WAS TOLD THAT FORD HAD NOT COME UP WITH THE PART TO FIX THAT LIFT-GATE ISSUE. THIS WAS IN SEPTEMBER. LETTER FROM FORD SAID TO GO AT THE END OF NOVEMBER; I WENT BUT WAS TOLD TO JUST STOP USING GLASS-LIFT AND TO OPEN THE ENTIRE REAR DOOR. STILL UNDER WARRANTY THEN. DECEMBER COMES, I TRAVEL TO SHREVEPORT FOR CHRISTMAS, GET THERE AND NOTICE THE CRACK UNDER THE LIFT-GLASS NEXT TO EMBLEM. UPON RETURNING HOME, I WENT TO BUDDY JONES FORD (SAME AS OTHER VISITS/PLUS BOUGHT TRUCK THERE). I WAS TOLD THEN THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WOULD DO ABOUT THE CRACK BECAUSE MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. I BELIEVE THAT IF THE RECALL ISSUE HAD BEEN ADDRESS WHEN I WENT THERE ON THE TWO PREVIOUS VISITS, THE NOW CRACKED BODY PART WOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED AS IT NEEDS REMOVING TO PROPERLY FIX THE LIFT-GATE. ON COMPLAINING TO FORD'S CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT THE CRACK I WAS TOLD THAT THE $50.00 UP FRONT PAYMENT TO REPAIR THE CRACKED PART WAS GENEROUS. THE $50.00 CO-PAY CAME ABOUT AFTER NUMEROUS EMAILS, PHONE CALLS, AND DEALER VISITS TO COMPLAIN.*AK
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-30
- VIN: 1MEFM55S72G
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I LEFT MY AUTOMOBILE, 2002 MERCURY SABLE, AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR ITS 25,000 MILE MAINTENANCE AND ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT THE FRONT END AS IT WAS SHIMMERING OVER 40 MPH. I WAS TOLD THAT ALL FOUR TIRE WALLS WERE CRACKING AND THAT THE TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED AT MY COST LESS ALLOWANCE. I WAS FURIOUS AND CALLED SEVERAL PEOPLE AT THE DEALERSHIP AND THE TIRE COMPANY TO COMPLAIN. THE TIRE COMPANY TOLD ME THAT CRACKED SIDEWALLS WERE COVERED IN THE WARRANTY AND IF IT WAS NOT THE TIRES SHOULD BE REPLACED AT NO COST TO ME. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THIS WAS NOT COVERED YET AFTER I CALLED THE TIRE COMPANY THE SAID THAT SOME OF THE MANAGEMENT PEOPLE AT THE DEALERSHIP LEARNED OF MY PROBLEM AND GAVE THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ORDERS TO REPLACE THE TIRES AT NO COST WITHOUT CALLING THE TIRE COMPANY. THEY ALSO SPECIFIED THAT THE TIRES WOULD HAVE TO BE SHIPPED BACK TO FORD MOTOR COMPANY. THE WHOLE THING SMELLS OF A COVER-UP BECAUSE OF THE IMMEDIATE TURN AROUND AT THE DEALERSHIP WHEN I MENTIONED A LAWSUIT. ALL FOUR OF THESE TIRES COULD HAVE BLOWN ONE AT A TIME OR TOGETHER CAUSING INJURY AND I DO NOT FEEL GOOD ABOUT THIS. *AK

This is my second one and I've had good luck with both. The gas mileage is good for a minivan and I don't have any issues with the cargo space. Although, I did have some electrical problems with my '97. Additionally, the middle seats can be quite heavy to remove.
-
This mini-van is excellent and comes with all the bells and whistles, but won't break the bank. You can get a great deal on it because it's the last year they're making it. It's the type of vehicle that you don't have to pay sticker price for, unlike some other brands. This is our second Villager - our other one was a '93 and it never had any problems.
-
I've owned 5 Mercury Villagers, starting with a 1995 nautica version. They are the best vehicle Ford ever made, which is why I keep buying them. This one has 115,000 miles and is in excellent condition, just like my previous ones. My first one is still on the road and I'm happy to say that the friend I sold it to is still a friend. It's a shame that Ford and Nissan couldn't work out their joint venture, as Ford would still be in the mini-van market and have a greater market share. If Ford had incorporated some of the features of the Villager in the Windstar, they would have sold a bunch more of them. I love my Villager and will drive it until it drops since I can't buy another.
-
I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying your Villager van! Before purchasing one myself, I asked many Villager owners what they thought of their van and I did not hear a single negative comment. It's surprising to me that the editor ratings aren't better, but I can assure you that you made a great choice!

The Mercury Villager is a great minivan. You've owned three, a 1996 GS model, a 1998 Multi-Sport model, and now a 2002 Estate model. They have been good to you. It's too bad Mercury is going to stop making them. They are comfortable, quiet, and kind of neat-looking. Nissan did a good job of designing them.
