The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.

Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.

The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

WE IMMEDIATELY GOT SOME SCISSORS TO CUT THE BELT TO LET HER FREE. THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME OTHER KID DOING THIS AND NOT HAVING ANYONE OR ANYTHING AROUND TO HELP MAKES ME NERVOUS. BIZARRE, I KNOW, BUT KIDS COME UP WITH RIDICULOUS STUFF ALL THE TIME. *TR

I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THESE SHIMS ARE NOT INSTALLED WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BUILT, BUT ARE REQUIRED IN ALMOST ALL CASES ONCE THE VEHICLE IS OUT ON THE ROAD AND HAS BEEN SUBJECTED TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE PRICE TAG? A HEFTY $347 PLUS TAX! I HAD TO DECLINE THE REPAIR, I THINK IT IS PATHETIC FOR FORD TO CUT COSTS IN THIS MANNER, ALWAYS PASSING UP QUALITY IN THE INTEREST OF SAVING A BUCK! THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS I PAID 80.00 DOLLARS TODAY FOR A FRONT END ALIGNMENT AND NOTHING HAS CHANGED! I THINK FORD/MERCURY SHOULD BE CALLED ON THE CARPET AND REQUIRED TO INSTALL THIS PART ON ALL VILLAGERS. THIS IN MY OPINION SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Negative 1997 Mercury Villager car reviews

  1. Barry Schroeder 2024-07-29

While not as large as some of its competitors, the Villager is a great choice for those who value fun driving and reliability. Even with 157,000 miles, it still drives like new with no squeaks or groans. It's as reliable as death and taxes! I wish they still made this van, as I would definitely buy another one just like it if/when this one ever fails.

  2. Darian Sanford 2024-04-09

I purchased the Villager second-hand with 86k miles and experienced no issues initially. However, around 90k miles, the transmission began to shift roughly. Although I had it repaired, the problem resurfaced.

  3. Ahmed Hegmann 2024-04-04

Hey there! I've had some trouble with the electrical system in this vehicle, unfortunately. The doors tend to lock by themselves, so be sure not to leave your keys inside! Additionally, the clock, radio, and wipers have a tendency to turn on and off randomly. The dealer has tried to fix these issues, but unfortunately, they haven't had much success. On top of that, the cost of repairing the heat and AC is pretty steep. While this van has been more reliable mechanically than previous Dodge Caravans I've owned, the electrical problems have been a major headache. I'm pretty much done with them at this point!

  4. Gayle Schmidt 2024-03-09

We purchased the van due to its stylish design, affordable price, and additional features compared to the Caravan series. We were fortunate to find a used one with only 18,000 miles and just 2 years old. The engine and transmission have been extremely reliable, and while some of the interior parts are not as well-built, it has still served us well for the past 4 years. As a Nissan, it has held up to the wear and tear of our family with three kids, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. We have no regrets.

  5. Westley Bartoletti 2024-01-18

My 97 Villager has had some issues, but I have taken care of them promptly. Despite being a low mileage kid transporter, with an average of less than 10K miles per year, I have had to replace the engine mount bolts at 50K miles, which cost me $550. Additionally, during the last wheel alignment, shims were required to get the alignment into spec. Some of the internal trim elements did not survive the first couple of years, and the steering wheel mounted radio controls have rarely worked. The electronic locks have also had some issues in hot weather, but I have been able to address them. Overall, I have been confident in my ability to maintain and improve the performance of my vehicle.

Positive 1997 Mercury Villager car reviews

  1. Immanuel Bins 2024-11-29

You have a great van! Over the course of 8 years, it has only gained 120,000 miles and has proven to be very reliable with no engine or transmission issues. Although there was a minor electrical problem with the rear heat, you were able to fix it yourself by using a jumper. The van has a solid ride and gets good mileage, about 25 mpg on the highway on a good day with good gas. It's no wonder you bought another Mercury 2002 Villager and don't want to sell the 1997 Villager since it's such a good van. With a hitch, you may even use it for pulling your boat and camper. The engine pulls very well for a 3.0 L. It's a shame they discontinued this van after 2002. You're not sure what you'll do when your 2002 is ready to go, but for now, you're enjoying your trusty 1997 Villager.

  2. Emory Cronin 2024-11-20

This was an old minivan, a 1997 model, but it held a special place in my heart. My elderly mother loved it too, as she could easily slide onto the seat without having to bend down. It was a godsend for her. Sitting up high made me feel superior, and it was my first minivan. I needed it for my business, which involved collecting antique and vintage furniture, and it was perfect for hauling furniture to my shop. I could stuff it up to the gills, and it never let me down. Even after an elderly neighbor crashed into the back of it while it was parked on the street, I chose to have it repaired because I loved it so much, even though my insurance said it was totaled and gave me the bare minimum for it. It lasted an extra 12 years and only succumbed when the fuel line rusted out. The mechanic said the line would have to be handcrafted, which I found hard to believe. Otherwise, I would have repaired it. My minivan changed my view of American-built vehicles. It had power, even when packed with heavy furniture. It's still sitting on the street, filled with furniture, even though I can't drive it anymore. Eventually, I will donate it, but I know I will cry when it's towed away.

  3. Donny Farrell 2024-09-11

In the less than 3 months I've had this vehicle, I've noticed that it's really quiet on the highway. The base 3.0 litre is very solid in highway transition to street smart 5 to 60 mph. When compared to the similar Nissan 'Quest', it holds up well. The only minor flaw is that changing the radio frequency may require you to take your attention off the road.

  4. Nigel Auer 2024-09-04

You've got a decent fit and finish on this one! The body still looks great and the engine and transmission are solid. Although, I can understand why you might wish you had leather. :)

  5. Raheem Jerde 2024-08-14

Our Villager has an impressive 251,000 miles and has proven to be an exceptional van. The engine and transmission have been consistently reliable, with the only minor issue being the hardware, specifically the locks.
