Mercury Villager problems

The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.
Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.
The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

Common Mercury Villager problems
The Mercury Villager, a minivan produced from 1993 to 2002, is known for its roomy interior and good fuel economy. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the issues that Mercury Villager owners have reported:
- Squealing Belts: A common problem with the Mercury Villager is a squealing noise coming from the engine bay. This noise is often caused by a slipping belt, which can be due to a worn-out belt or a problem with the tensioner.
- Fuel System Problems: The Mercury Villager's fuel system has been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a loss of fuel pressure, which can cause the engine to stall or have difficulty starting. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or a problem with the fuel injectors.
- Ignition System Problems: The ignition system of the Mercury Villager has also been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a misfire, which can be caused by worn-out spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, or a problem with the distributor.
- Engine Problems: The engine of the Mercury Villager has been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a loss of power, which can be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor, a clogged air filter, or a problem with the fuel system.
- Heating and Cooling Problems: The heating and cooling system of the Mercury Villager has also been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a faulty heater core, which can cause the vehicle to blow cold air when the heater is turned on. Another common problem is a faulty A/C compressor, which can cause the vehicle to blow hot air when the A/C is turned on.
- Electrical Problems: The electrical system of the Mercury Villager has been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a faulty alternator, which can cause the vehicle to have difficulty starting or intermittent electrical issues. Another common problem is a faulty battery, which can cause the vehicle to have difficulty starting or intermittent electrical issues.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by Mercury Villager owners. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended that you take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

- Date Complaint: 2017-07-06
- VIN: 4M2DV11W6TD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE CAR CONTINUALLY LOCKS ITSELF (POWER LOCKS). IF I'M OUTSIDE THE CAR I HAVE TO REPEATEDLY TRY TO UNLOCK IT WHILE AT THE SAME TIME IT RELOCKS ITSELF. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS IT WILL STOP AND LET ME IN. SAME IS TRUE IF I'M IN THE CAR EXCEPT NOW I CAN'T GET OUT. IT'S USUALLY MUCH WORSE DURING THE DAY THAN AT NIGHT. DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE IN THE CAR, TRYING TO GET IN OR NEARBY (I DON'T HAVE A REMOTE NOR IS IT AN OPTION). THE CAR CAN BE SITTING IDLE FOR HOURS AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING ITSELF IN RAPID SUCCESSION. RARELY IF EVER DOES IT END UP UNLOCKED. WILL OCCASIONALLY GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCEDURE WHILE DRIVING. IT DOESN'T EFFECT ANYTHING BUT ALL THE DOOR LOCKS (AT LEAST THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ASCERTAIN). IF IT MATTERS I COULD SEND A VIDEO OF THIS PROBLEM. THE QUESTION BELOW OF WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN IS MOOT. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY AT ANYTIME. I'VE TRIED NUMEROUS WORKAROUNDS WITH LITTLE SUCCESS BECAUSE THE CAR SEEMS TO ADAPT AND THEN BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT. ( BELIEVE ME, I KNOW WHAT THIS SOUNDS LIKE.)

I have 165,000 miles on my Mini van and it is still going strong! It's the best Mini van I've ever bought. As long as you maintain it well, it won't cause any problems whatsoever. The mileage for long trips, mostly from New York to Florida, has been and still is great. I've only had to replace wear and tear items here and there, but it still drives smoothly and with power. This American/Japanese venture really paid off, only to be stopped a few models later as it wasn't making enough money. No wonder the company stopped making it. They were losing money on parts. I would love for the manufacturer to start building them again, but unfortunately, that's unlikely to happen. In my opinion, Kia minivans seem to be heading in the same direction.

I've owned my Mercury Villager for 2 1/2 years now and I absolutely love it! During our search for a minivan, we test drove many different models, but the Villager stood out because of how well it handled. It felt more like a car than a van, which was a pleasant surprise. In the time that we've had it, we've only had to do minor maintenance items, which is a huge relief compared to the Caravan we had before. Overall, it was definitely worth the money we paid and I really wish they would bring them back!

I've been the proud owner of this van for about 3 months now and so far, everything has been great! The only minor issue I've noticed is that the door locks seem to have a mind of their own. With 105,000 miles on the clock, I was pleased to see that this model has received a lot of positive feedback on this site. I did notice that the later models from 2000 onwards seem to have received some negative reviews from consumer reports. I wonder what changes were made?

I bought this minivan 11 years ago and I absolutely love it! I've driven it across the country several times with no problems, including one trip towing a U-Haul trailer through a snowstorm. It's definitely the best vehicle I've ever owned. I've only had minimal maintenance issues, which were expected. Even after all these years, I'm still getting 16 to 18 mpg and the engine still has plenty of power. Unfortunately, my A/C has recently stopped working and R-12 freon is rare and expensive. However, I've kept it reasonably clean and well-maintained, and I expect to see another 80,000 miles. Thanks for reading!

I've only had this van for two years, but it's been great so far! Other than having to replace the brakes, I haven't had any issues. It handles well in the snow with the Eagle LS radials, and the mileage is decent too. If I had the chance, I would definitely buy another low mileage one of these in a heartbeat! While I'm sure the Monterey is a great van, the Villager Estate has the added bonus of a moon roof and awesome mini-van option!

Although we were initially intrigued with the Villager as a cheaper version of the Nissan Quest, unfortunately, it has not lived up to our expectations. We have experienced a lot of repairs season after season, year after year, which has made it a bad investment for us. The van is noisy, has brake issues, AC issues, and slow acceleration. It also consumes gas like a truck. We are currently looking for a replacement. While we cannot recommend this van, we appreciate the opportunity to share our experience with it.

This vehicle has had a number of issues, including problems with the CV joints, frequent stalling in hot weather while running the A/C, and multiple sensor replacements. Additionally, there have been issues with the motor mounts and cooling system, and the check engine light has been a persistent problem. Despite attempts to address these issues, the vehicle has continued to experience problems and is no longer reliable. As a result, I have decided to dispose of it. Given the extent of the necessary repairs, it would have been prohibitively expensive to have the vehicle serviced by a dealer.

I purchased a 97 Mercury Villager on September 25th with 120k miles on it. Unfortunately, within the first 20 days of ownership, I encountered several issues including a faulty EGR valve, a bad catalytic converter, and ultimately a blown engine. Despite being misled by the previous owner and the dealer, I am disappointed with the van. It was my first car and the engine failure occurred while I was driving on the highway with my 11-week-old son in the back seat. However, I am confident that I will be able to find a more reliable vehicle in the future.

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're sorry to hear that you've had some issues with your car. It sounds like you've had a few problems with the middle right-side window rattling and the automatic transmission shifting bumpily. We understand how frustrating that can be. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration for future improvements. If there's anything else we can do to assist you, please don't hesitate to reach out. Thank you!
