Mercury Villager problems
The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.
Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.
The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE IN THE CAR, TRYING TO GET IN OR NEARBY (I DON'T HAVE A REMOTE NOR IS IT AN OPTION). THE CAR CAN BE SITTING IDLE FOR HOURS AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING ITSELF IN RAPID SUCCESSION. RARELY IF EVER DOES IT END UP UNLOCKED. WILL OCCASIONALLY GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCEDURE WHILE DRIVING. IT DOESN'T EFFECT ANYTHING BUT ALL THE DOOR LOCKS (AT LEAST THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ASCERTAIN). IF IT MATTERS I COULD SEND A VIDEO OF THIS PROBLEM. THE QUESTION BELOW OF WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN IS MOOT. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY AT ANYTIME. IF (1) THE FUEL TANK IS OVERFILLED, NOT ALLOWING EXCESS FUEL IN THE VENT HOSE TO FLOW BACK INTO THE TANK, (2) THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE AFTER REFUELING AND, (3) THERE IS SUBSEQUENTLY SIGNIFICANT HEATING OF THE FUEL TANK, THE FUEL IN THE TANK CAN EXPAND INTO THE VENT HOSE AND LEAK FUEL.
- Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE VENT HOSE.

We bought this van because it was easy to get in and out of, unlike most vans. As a short person with a disability from polio, this van is perfect for me to enter and exit from. I really wish they had continued to make this van as it is an excellent vehicle.

I purchased this vehicle from Craigslist back in 2010 for less than $800. Although I had to replace the muffler and get the brakes done all around, this champion has started every time I have turned the key, except for the time I left the map-light on and drained my battery. I wonder if car age years are like dog age years? If 21 human years is my Villagers age, then my van is nearly 150 and still going strong! UPDATE: It's September 2016 - The old girl is 23 now and still going great, except for the R-12 AC system that needs an upgrade. I really noticed it this summer! Although the 4/60 Air Conditioning isn't what it was when I was a kid, she still starts with every turn of the key. I love my Villager, and my mechanic says he has first dibs on the engine should I ever want to sell her.

The body is starting to rust away so I imagine the body will be gone before the engine gives out. My parents bought this van used and then gave it to me in 2009 and it has been a huge help with commuting to work/school and moving furniture etc. I honestly cannot believe that it's still running! Just recently the freaky power lock problem started, but it's just a little quirk of an overall great vehicle!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share some information about my van. I bought it used with 41000 miles and it has been a great investment. The timing belt was replaced at 88000 and 150000 miles, and the radiator, fuel pump, and water pump were replaced at 145000 miles. Of course, I've had to replace the usual things like tires and brakes, but at 188000 miles, I also had to replace the shocks and struts. Overall, I've been really impressed with how comfortable and reliable this van has been. Recently, I decided to upgrade to a used Volvo XC90, but it was hard to find something that could match the quality of my van.

I researched this car thoroughly before purchasing it and it has lived up to my expectations. It's a fantastic mini-van with a beautiful leather interior and removable seats, except for the rear bench that can slide back and forth. I needed a spacious and comfortable car for my husband, myself and our two dogs, while also being fuel efficient. Although there are some known issues with the front end, such as the tie rod and CV joint, and the speedometer display occasionally goes blank, we are still able to use it. We plan to replace the speedometer display soon. Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase and it is meeting all of our needs. Additionally, it was affordable, so we can invest a little more into it and enjoy it for many more years to come.

I have experienced several issues with the emissions of the car since the day of purchase, including unpleasant odours such as rotten eggs and burning smells. Despite multiple visits to the dealer, none of the attempted fixes have been successful. The fuel pump has been replaced twice, as recommended by the dealer, and both the front and rear windshield washer pumps have been replaced. These issues are concerning for a low-mileage car that has been well-maintained by its owner.

Although my Mercury Estate may have some drawbacks, such as being underpowered and having difficulty achieving fuel economy, it still manages to provide a comfortable ride and handles well. Despite the challenges with fueling, I have found ways to maximize its fuel capacity. Additionally, while the body may be prone to scratches, it is still a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this vehicle while browsing for used vans on Craigslist last year. I purchased it with 114,000 miles on the clock and have been driving it hard, adding 22,000 miles to it. I use it every day as a service vehicle. While it has had a few wear and tear issues, such as new brakes, a bad distributor, and new tires, it has been reliable overall. There is a knocking or crunching noise coming from the driver's side wheel over bumps, which I think may be a CV joint or something. So, while it's not invincible, it's definitely reliable and a phenomenal value. I just hope mine holds up to 200-250k miles like many others have.

This 1998 Ford Arrowstar is much more comfortable and easier to maneuver than the previous model. It provides ample warning before any issues arise, allowing you to take it in for repairs before getting stranded. While the driver's legroom could be improved, the vehicle holds its own and has good acceleration. It also has excellent maneuverability and performs well in all weather conditions. However, it can be challenging to perform any under-the-hood work due to the compact design. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have a key lock on the front passenger door, in addition to the driver's door and hatch. Overall, this is a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive.

You bought this car used in 1997 with only 27,000 miles on it. Now, with 107,000 miles, it's still going strong! It has been incredibly reliable, requiring only minimal maintenance and a few repairs. The worst issue you've had was when the rear AC unit went out a couple of summers ago, but it was quickly and easily replaced.
