Mercury Villager problems
The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.
Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.
The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

Common Mercury Villager problems
The Mercury Villager, a minivan produced from 1993 to 2002, is known for its roomy interior and good fuel economy. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the issues that Mercury Villager owners have reported:
- Squealing Belts: A common problem with the Mercury Villager is a squealing noise coming from the engine bay. This noise is often caused by a slipping belt, which can be due to a worn-out belt or a problem with the tensioner.
- Fuel System Problems: The Mercury Villager's fuel system has been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a loss of fuel pressure, which can cause the engine to stall or have difficulty starting. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or a problem with the fuel injectors.
- Ignition System Problems: The ignition system of the Mercury Villager has also been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a misfire, which can be caused by worn-out spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, or a problem with the distributor.
- Engine Problems: The engine of the Mercury Villager has been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a loss of power, which can be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor, a clogged air filter, or a problem with the fuel system.
- Heating and Cooling Problems: The heating and cooling system of the Mercury Villager has also been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a faulty heater core, which can cause the vehicle to blow cold air when the heater is turned on. Another common problem is a faulty A/C compressor, which can cause the vehicle to blow hot air when the A/C is turned on.
- Electrical Problems: The electrical system of the Mercury Villager has been reported to have several issues. One of the most common problems is a faulty alternator, which can cause the vehicle to have difficulty starting or intermittent electrical issues. Another common problem is a faulty battery, which can cause the vehicle to have difficulty starting or intermittent electrical issues.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by Mercury Villager owners. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended that you take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair.

- Date Complaint: 2017-07-06
- VIN: 4M2DV11W6TD
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE CAR CONTINUALLY LOCKS ITSELF (POWER LOCKS). IF I'M OUTSIDE THE CAR I HAVE TO REPEATEDLY TRY TO UNLOCK IT WHILE AT THE SAME TIME IT RELOCKS ITSELF. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS IT WILL STOP AND LET ME IN. SAME IS TRUE IF I'M IN THE CAR EXCEPT NOW I CAN'T GET OUT. IT'S USUALLY MUCH WORSE DURING THE DAY THAN AT NIGHT. DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE IN THE CAR, TRYING TO GET IN OR NEARBY (I DON'T HAVE A REMOTE NOR IS IT AN OPTION). THE CAR CAN BE SITTING IDLE FOR HOURS AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN STARTS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING ITSELF IN RAPID SUCCESSION. RARELY IF EVER DOES IT END UP UNLOCKED. WILL OCCASIONALLY GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCEDURE WHILE DRIVING. IT DOESN'T EFFECT ANYTHING BUT ALL THE DOOR LOCKS (AT LEAST THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ASCERTAIN). IF IT MATTERS I COULD SEND A VIDEO OF THIS PROBLEM. THE QUESTION BELOW OF WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN IS MOOT. IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY AT ANYTIME. I'VE TRIED NUMEROUS WORKAROUNDS WITH LITTLE SUCCESS BECAUSE THE CAR SEEMS TO ADAPT AND THEN BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT. ( BELIEVE ME, I KNOW WHAT THIS SOUNDS LIKE.)

You have a great van! Over the course of 8 years, it has only gained 120,000 miles and has proven to be very reliable with no engine or transmission issues. Although there was a minor electrical problem with the rear heat, you were able to fix it yourself by using a jumper. The van has a solid ride and gets good mileage, about 25 mpg on the highway on a good day with good gas. It's no wonder you bought another Mercury 2002 Villager and don't want to sell the 1997 Villager since it's such a good van. With a hitch, you may even use it for pulling your boat and camper. The engine pulls very well for a 3.0 L. It's a shame they discontinued this van after 2002. You're not sure what you'll do when your 2002 is ready to go, but for now, you're enjoying your trusty 1997 Villager.

My '95 Villager recently experienced electrical issues that were not worth repairing. However, I have nothing to complain about as this van has been reliable throughout its 17-year lifespan. The only major repair it ever required was a water pump replacement. It never experienced any critical failures, except for the air vents for the back passenger seats which gave out after 5 years. Nevertheless, we managed with just the front ones. The van's heat and AC were great, but more importantly, it was sturdy. Even after being in a wreck a year ago, it still ran like a champ. I will miss the old thing.

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying your Villager van! Before purchasing one myself, I asked many Villager owners what they thought of their van and I did not hear a single negative comment. It's surprising to me that the editor ratings aren't better, but I can assure you that you made a great choice!

When you're looking for a minivan, a good friend recommended the Mercury Villager or Nissan Quest, and what a great decision it was! I bought my '95 model in '97 when it had only 19,000 miles on it. Now, with 165,000 miles on it, the car has been repair-free except for replacing a high-pressure fuel line (which I made a lot harder than it was). I've only had to purchase tires.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that after 10 years of great memories, I've decided to sell my van to make way for a sporty new SUV. I feel so lucky to have purchased the best-built Villager ever, as it's been such a reliable and noble friend to my family. The original engine and transmission are still going strong after all these years, and the electrical works perfectly. The ride is smooth and quiet, making it a joy to drive. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me!

I purchased the Villager second-hand with 86k miles and experienced no issues initially. However, around 90k miles, the transmission began to shift roughly. Although I had it repaired, the problem resurfaced.

I bought it based on its good reviews and can honestly say it was worth every penny. I enjoyed its usability carrying my family, radio control airplanes, or computers for my job. It now has just over 120k miles and I hope to help out a family in need. Repairs were mostly due to wear and tear, except for a fuel pump replacement (twice).

My 97 Villager has had some issues, but I have taken care of them promptly. Despite being a low mileage kid transporter, with an average of less than 10K miles per year, I have had to replace the engine mount bolts at 50K miles, which cost me $550. Additionally, during the last wheel alignment, shims were required to get the alignment into spec. Some of the internal trim elements did not survive the first couple of years, and the steering wheel mounted radio controls have rarely worked. The electronic locks have also had some issues in hot weather, but I have been able to address them. Overall, I have been confident in my ability to maintain and improve the performance of my vehicle.

The leather seats are very comfortable and the ride is great. The van also has exceptional gas mileage at 22.5mpg. However, the rear hatch is too low and can hit your head. Additionally, my van has wet carpet and an issue with the a/c compressor constantly clicking and draining the motor, although it still blows cold. Overall, it seems much more reliable than the Caravans I've had in the past.
