The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.

Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.

The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

One of the most common problems is a hesitation or stalling of the engine, which has been reported to occur after the car has been driven for a while or when it has been idling for an extended period of time. This issue has been traced back to the fuel filter and fuel pump, which may need to be replaced to resolve the problem.

Another common issue is a smell of gasoline, which has been reported in the 1994 Villager. This could be caused by a leak in the fuel system or a problem with the fuel pressure regulator.

Additionally, the A/C system in the 2001 Villager has been reported to blow hot air. This could be caused by a problem with the A/C compressor or a leak in the A/C system.

The fuel system is another area where the 1995 Mercury Villager has had some issues. There have been 8 complaints about the engine and 6 complaints about the fuel system. These issues could be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or a problem with the fuel injectors.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS THESE PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALL POSTED INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. NOW I HAVE TAKE MY CAR INTO MULTIPLE PLACES TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESOLVED, AND NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I THINK SINCE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM, BUT A PROBLEM THAT MERCURY AS A COMPANY NEEDS TO FIX. I AM HAVING AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH MY VAN NOT STARTING. IT IS A 1993 MERCURY VILLAGER. ON SATURDAY AFTER DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR WITH MULTIPLE STOPS WHERE I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WENT INTO A STORE, IT WOULD NOT START. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY EVERY SINGLE LIGHT CAME ON, SEAT BELT, CHECK ENGINE, IT SEEMED LIKE 7 OR 8 IN ALL. THERE WAS NOTHING. WE TRIED JUMPING IT, BUT THAT DID NOT DO ANYTHING. LATER THAT DAY SOMEONE TOLD ME IT SOUNDED TO HIM LIKE IT WASN'T IN PARK OR AT LEAST THE CAR DIDN'T THINK IT WAS IN PARK. I TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN AFTER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE, TURNING TO ON AND MOVING FROM PARK TO NEUTRAL THEN BACK TO PARK. IT STARTED UP JUST LIKE ALWAYS. I DROVE AROUND AND MADE 2 STOPS. THE FIRST TIME IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP, THE SECOND TIME IT WOULDN'T START, BUT AFTER MOVING IT TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO PARK IT STARTED RIGHT UP. AFTER A TOTAL DRIVING TIME OF ABOUT 35 - 40 MINUTES I ARRIVED HOME. ABOUT 20 MINUTES LATER I WENT OUT TO START THE CAR AND GOT NOTHING. THIS TIME THE NEUTRAL TO PARK TRICK DID NOT WORK. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIME OVER THE COURSE OF AN HOUR WITH NO LUCK. HAVE A 1997 VILLAGER WITH 130K ON IT. THE VAN HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE UNTIL TWO DAYS AGO. I WENT OUT TO START IT AND IT SPITS, SPUTTERS, BACKFIRES AND DIES. *TR

Negative 1995 Mercury Villager car reviews

  1. Ola Abbott 2025-01-09

I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this van. Unfortunately, we had to have the engine rebuilt just one year after buying it. Thankfully, the extended warranty we purchased saved us. We also had to have the transmission repaired due to slipping. Now that the extended warranty has expired, the mechanic has informed me that the noise I have been hearing is a 'valve tap', just as another reviewer had mentioned. Additionally, the middle right-side window rattles and whistles incessantly. We have also been experiencing ongoing electrical issues. Recently, we attempted to trade it in for a Chevy Venture, but the trade-in offer was quite insulting. It's best to steer clear of this van.

  2. David Predovic 2024-11-18

I bought it based on its good reviews and can honestly say it was worth every penny. I enjoyed its usability carrying my family, radio control airplanes, or computers for my job. It now has just over 120k miles and I hope to help out a family in need. Repairs were mostly due to wear and tear, except for a fuel pump replacement (twice).

  3. Mervin Volkman 2024-08-26

You bought this car used in 1997 with only 27,000 miles on it. Now, with 107,000 miles, it's still going strong! It has been incredibly reliable, requiring only minimal maintenance and a few repairs. The worst issue you've had was when the rear AC unit went out a couple of summers ago, but it was quickly and easily replaced.

  4. Erin Dicki 2024-07-18

We decided to spend a little more and get a higher quality mini-van. Unfortunately, this particular one must have been assembled on a hangover Monday morning. We had oil leaks, coolant leaks, power steering leaks, two blower motors, and the rear AC/heater went out. On its good days, it ran well on the highway. However, the back seats were a lifesaver, keeping fussy kids apart.

  5. Cole Schmidt 2024-07-09

I do not recommend this vehicle. The crank broke at 94,000 miles, despite all proper maintenance being done. Additionally, the cup holder in the front was poorly designed.

Positive 1995 Mercury Villager car reviews

  1. Remington Koss 2024-11-26

My '95 Villager recently experienced electrical issues that were not worth repairing. However, I have nothing to complain about as this van has been reliable throughout its 17-year lifespan. The only major repair it ever required was a water pump replacement. It never experienced any critical failures, except for the air vents for the back passenger seats which gave out after 5 years. Nevertheless, we managed with just the front ones. The van's heat and AC were great, but more importantly, it was sturdy. Even after being in a wreck a year ago, it still ran like a champ. I will miss the old thing.

  2. Camryn Prohaska 2024-11-22

When you're looking for a minivan, a good friend recommended the Mercury Villager or Nissan Quest, and what a great decision it was! I bought my '95 model in '97 when it had only 19,000 miles on it. Now, with 165,000 miles on it, the car has been repair-free except for replacing a high-pressure fuel line (which I made a lot harder than it was). I've only had to purchase tires.

  3. Walter Schaefer 2024-11-22

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that after 10 years of great memories, I've decided to sell my van to make way for a sporty new SUV. I feel so lucky to have purchased the best-built Villager ever, as it's been such a reliable and noble friend to my family. The original engine and transmission are still going strong after all these years, and the electrical works perfectly. The ride is smooth and quiet, making it a joy to drive. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me!

The van had 23K miles on it when we purchased it 6 years ago, and now it has 172K. We've only had to change the oil and brakes, but it's been a reliable vehicle. Although the AC went out 2 years ago, the van just keeps on running. We've never had to replace the spark plugs, wires, hoses, or belts! It's been a great investment.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that I put 100K mi on this van since purchase in 1997 ($32,000 when purchased). Although I had to replace a fuel pump and sliding shoulder harness belt twice, I just repaired the AC ($350) and it has been perfectly reliable and trouble-free. Unfortunately, a lady ran a red light last night and totaled it. I'm feeling a bit bummed about trying to find a replacement, as I would have kept this car for as long as possible.
