1992 Mercury Cougar problems
The Mercury Cougar is a series of automobiles that was sold by Mercury from 1967 to 2002. The model line is a diverse series of vehicles; though the Cougar nameplate is most commonly associated with two-door coupes, at various stages in its production, the model also was offered as a convertible and a hatchback. During its production as the mid-size Mercury line, the Cougar was also offered as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon.
In production for 34 years across eight generations (skipping the 1998 model year), the Cougar is second only to the Grand Marquis (36 years) in the Mercury line for production longevity. 2,972,784 examples were produced, making it the highest-selling Mercury vehicle. During the 1970s and 1980s, the marketing of the Mercury division was closely associated with the Cougar, with promotional materials advertising Mercury dealers as "The Sign of the Cat" with big cats atop Lincoln-Mercury dealer signs. Cat-related nameplates were adopted by other Mercury lines, including the Bobcat and Lynx.
During its production, the Cougar was assembled at the Dearborn Assembly Plant (part of the Ford River Rouge Complex) in Dearborn, Michigan from 1967 until 1973, San Jose Assembly (Milpitas, California) from 1968 into early 1969, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) from 1974 until 1997, and at Flat Rock Assembly (Flat Rock, Michigan) from 1999 through 2002.

Common 1992 Mercury Cougar problems
The 1992 Mercury Cougar, a popular car of its time, has had its fair share of problems and complaints from owners. Here are some of the most common issues:
- Headlights Going Out: The 1992 Mercury Cougar has had issues with the headlights going out for various intervals, which can be preceded by flickering or blinking due to the circuit breaker opening. This issue can be dangerous, especially when driving at night, and should be fixed as soon as possible to ensure the safety of the driver and other road users.
- Fuel System Problems: The 1992 Mercury Cougar has had problems with the fuel system, including the movement of fuel lines causing the nylon fuel line jumper to chafe against the floor pan, leading to a pinhole in the fuel line and fuel leakage. This issue can be dangerous, as it can lead to a fire hazard, and should be fixed as soon as possible.
- Ignition Switch Issues: The 1992 Mercury Cougar has had issues with the ignition switch, which could experience an internal short circuit. This issue can lead to the car not starting, and the ignition switch should be replaced to prevent further problems.
- Lane-Keeping Assist System: Some 1992 Mercury Cougar models have a lane-keeping assist system, which can be confusing for some drivers, especially if they are not used to it. This system helps keep the car in its lane and prevents it from drifting from side to side. While not a problem per se, it is essential to understand how this system works to avoid confusion and frustration.
In conclusion, the 1992 Mercury Cougar has had several common problems, including head gasket leakage, headlights going out, fuel system issues, ignition switch problems, and lane-keeping assist system confusion. It is essential to address these issues as soon as possible to ensure the safety and reliability of the car. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

CHECKED OIL THERE WAS NO WATER IN IT, BUT IT WAS LOW . I ADDED A QUART IN ORDER TO GET IT HOME. IT STILL HAD WHITE SMOKE OR STEAM COMING OUT THE TAIL PIPE. ALSO THE SEATS DO NOT LOCK INTO PLACE. THE AIRCONDITIONER DOES NOT GET COLD. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE THAT I SHOULD BE AWARE OF THAT I NEED TO HAVE FIXED.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A HEADLIGHT SWITCH WHICH INCORPORATES A CIRCUIT BREAKER OF REVISED DESIGN, AND INSTALL A WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR, IF NEEDED.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
