The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.

In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.

First generation (1995–2006, T1N)

Europe

The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.

The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2009 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are common problems with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 2009 model based on complaints from owners:

  • Alternator Voltage Regulator: Dim lights and slow wipers while driving at night can indicate a faulty alternator voltage regulator. This issue can lead to the battery not being charged properly, eventually causing the vehicle to stop. The solution involves removing and replacing the alternator or just the regulator, as detailed in the Haynes Sprinter manual.
  • Suspension System: The Sprinter's suspension system faces significant stress due to constant movement and road conditions. Front shock absorbers may leak, leading to suspension issues. The demanding nature of urban roads, potholes, and kerbs can contribute to this problem.
  • Exhaust Flex Pipe: A common issue with the 2007 or 906 chassis models with the V6 OM642 diesel engine is a broken exhaust flex pipe. This can lead to leaks from the exhaust, potentially causing wiring damage and engine shutdown. The issue is more prevalent in 2007 to 2009 models.
  • DEF Heater Failure: In newer Sprinters, a faulty Diesel Emission Fluid (DEF) heater can cause the engine light to come on, particularly in colder climates. The heater element burning out can lead to issues, especially during winter months, potentially triggering an active start countdown.
  • DPF Regeneration Problems: The Diesel Particular Filter (DPF) in Sprinters can face issues with regeneration, leading to clogging and restricted exhaust flow. Factors like faulty temperature sensors, EGR valves, and running issues can hinder proper regeneration, causing power loss and potential severe restrictions in the exhaust system.
  • Limp Mode Activation: Sprinters have a safety feature called Limp Mode, which activates to protect the engine from damage. This mode can be triggered by various issues like faulty EGR, oxygen sensors, or intercooler leaks, reducing engine power to prevent further damage.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to issues to ensure the optimal performance and longevity of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 2009 model.
