2010 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.
In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.
First generation (1995–2006, T1N)
Europe
The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.
The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2010 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 is known for its dependability and longevity, but like any vehicle, it can have certain issues. Here are some common problems with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, based on complaints from owners:
- Faulty DEF Heater: A faulty Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) heater is a common issue in the 2020 model and newer Sprinters. The heater element burns out, causing the engine light to come on. This is not usually a problem during the summer months but can become one during the winter months and in colder climates. If ignored, it can lead to an active start countdown.
- Broken Exhaust Flex Pipe: This issue is common in the 2007 or the 906 chassis with the V6 OM642 diesel engine. Leaks from the exhaust, coming from the flex pipe, can melt the nearby wiring, causing the engine to shut off, not restart, and start the counter.
- The No Start Count Down (Dep-Counter): The Sprinter 2010 and newer models with Bluetec will start counting down any remaining start cycles if there are issues with the DEF level or the Nox sensors and other components related to the DEF/Adblue. If the countdown has started, it's strongly recommended to have your van diagnosed before it gets to the last few remaining start cycles.
- A Clogged DPF: The Diesel Particular Filter (DPF) in Sprinter's grabs soot from the exhaust. The DPF will gather soot until it reaches a level to perform regeneration. During regeneration, the ECU causes the DPF to reach a very high temperature, approximately 1,200F, and burn the soot. If the ash builds up inside the DPF, it will not burn out if the wrong engine oil is used. The DPF can clog and restrict exhaust flow. If the content of ash is too high, manual DPF regeneration with SDS Start Scanner may be required. If that fails, the only option is to replace the DPF.
- Issues That Can Prevent DPF Regeneration: Faulty temperature sensor, swirl flap motor, EGR valve, or running issues can prevent the DPF from performing its regeneration. If not properly corrected, the exhaust will have severe restrictions, and the van will lose power as the clogging increases.
- Reduced Power / Limp Mode: Sprinters have a Limp Mode, a safety feature to protect the engine from damage. It can be activated if the engine is pushed too hard. When the MIL illuminates or the check engine light starts flashing, it's an indicator of Limp Mode. It's trying to lower engine power to prevent any further damage to affected components. The onboard computer will switch the turbo off to reduce power, forcing the driver to get the van to a reputable Sprinter shop and have it serviced.
- Oil Cooler Leaks: Oil cooler leaks are common on the 2007 to present models with the OM642 engine. The oil cooler seals are where most of the engine oil leaks take place. As of late, Mercedes has updated the seals with a better material made from Viton which increases their life. However, reaching it can be difficult, making the oil cooler expensive to repair.
- Glow Plug Problems: Just like all diesel engines, the glow plugs and modules in the Sprinter will not last forever. Sometimes the plugs will break off in the cylinder head. There is a special tool to drill out and extract the glow plug without removing the cylinder head. Pricing can vary on glow plugs, depending on the engine and year.
- Injector Issue or Black Death: Another problem usually called "Black Death" is the copper seal ring which is located in the middle of the injectors and cylinder head. It deteriorates and can cause combustion gasses to escape, leading to the accumulation of black tar and coal-like material over the fuel injectors. Removing and/or replacing injectors are usually caused by copper seals not being replaced with new ones or seals not being properly installed, allowing for combustion gasses to leak over time.
These are some of the common problems with the 2010 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500, based on complaints from owners. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity and dependability of the vehicle.

- Summary: Safety Concerns Regarding Eberspächer Diesel Heaters in My 2010 Sprinter This complaint outlines critical safety concerns identified with the two Eberspächer diesel heaters in my 2010 Sprinter van, originally installed / imported from Germany. 1. Potential Non-Compliance with Emission Standards: A recent inspection suggests that both heaters might not meet EPA/CARB emission regulations due to the absence of a required CARB sticker. While I've obtained and verified CARB compliance documentation directly from Eberspächer through a local MBUSA dealer, the lack of the sticker raises concerns. 2. Fume Intrusion into Driver Compartment: The current heater installation, positioned directly below the driver's cabin, poses a significant safety hazard. Fumes can enter the compartment in various scenarios: (a) Opening or closing the driver's door (b) Rolling down windows for activities like toll payments (c) Vehicle stopping, causing fumes to roll underneath and enter the front air intake (d) Parking between cars or in restricted airflow environments, allowing fumes to reach the front air intake 3. Improper Heater Installation: There's evidence that the heater installation deviates from the manufacturer's instructions. Specifically, the exhaust pipe might be pointed downwards, enabling debris from the road to directly enter the heater. This can lead to blockages and potentially cause a fire hazard. 4. Urgency of Addressing the Issues Given the potential violation of emission regulations and the serious safety risks associated with fume intrusion and improper installation, I urge immediate attention to this matter. Please advise on the necessary steps to ensure my Sprinter's heaters comply with regulations and are installed safely. I am attaching photos of the installation as well as notice of CARB compliance (non-compliance in my case) it is my understanding, that Daimler has shipped significant number of similar trucks across USA. thank you.

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I OWN A 2010 MERCEDES BENZ SPRINTER PASSENGER VAN (2500). I PURCHASED IT USED IN AUGUST 2014. THE DEALER I PURCHASED IT FROM INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE FIXING A LEAK IN THE REAR AIR CONDITIONER. IN JANUARY, 2015 AFTER A SIGNIFICANT SNOWSTORM AND A FREEZE MY AIR CONDITIONING UNIT STARTED LEAKING. IT ONLY LEAKS DURING A RAIN STORM, BUT IT IS DUE TO THE SEAL THAT IS BETWEEN THE AIR-CONDITIONER AND ROOF OF THE VAN WHICH HAS BEEN TORN. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM IN NEARLY ALL SPRINTER MODELS. THIS POSES A SAFETY CONCERN FOR MY PASSENGERS AND IS A HUGE INCONVENIENCE DURING THE RAINY SEASON. MERCEDES BENZ NEEDS TO RE-CALL ALL SPRINTERS AND FIX THE DESIGN OF THE ROOF-TOP AIR CONDITIONERS. *TR

- Summary: OUR 2010 MERCEDES-BENZ (MB) 2500 SPRINTER VAN AT 57,000 HAD A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURN ON. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REST THE COMPUTER AND TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE. UPON RETURNING FROM THE TEST DRIVE THEY TOLD US EVERYTHING WAS FINE. TWO DAYS LATER THE LIGHT TURNED ON AGAIN AND THE MOTOR RUNS ROUGH. I TOOK IT BACK INTO THE DEALER AND THE NEXT DAY THEY SAID MY PROBLEM WAS A SENSOR IN THE ADBLUE TANK. TO FIX THE PROBLEM THE TANK, SENSOR AND WIRING HARNESS MUST BE REPLACED AT A COST OF $2200.00. ADBLUE IS THE NAME FOR THE MB DIESEL EXHAUST AFTER TREATMENT SYSTEM THAT INJECTS DEF TO INTO THE EXHAUST. MB HAS ALREADY ISSUED A SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE. THAT NUMBER OF THAT SERVICE CAMPAIGN IS 201009005. WHEN I CALLED MD @ 1-877-762-8267 THEY LOOKED INTO MY PROBLEM AND TOLD ME THAT ALL THOUGH MY PROBLEM WAS SIMILAR TO THE ONE IN THE PREVIOUS SERVICE CAMPAIGN MY ISSUE IS NOT COVERED BY IT. MY ISSUE IS THAT THE ENGINE HAS A 5YEAR 100,000 MILE WARRANTY AND THIS IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE ENGINE; BUT IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS AND SEE HOW MANY OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE. I THINK MB SHOULD HAVE TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR EVERYONE. THANK YOU. *JS
