2006 Mazda Rx-8 problems
The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.
The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.
The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

What is the common problem in Mazda RX-8?
Engine Problems
One of the most reported RX8 problems revolves around its engine. Its unique high-performance rotary-style engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.
What years to avoid RX-8?
Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 1st generation (2004–2008).
- 2nd Generation RX-8. Years 2009–2011 Reliability 5th out of 36 PainRank™ 0.34 Complaints 2.
- 1st Generation RX-8. Years 2004–2008 Reliability 23rd out of 36 PainRank™ 3.6 Complaints 27.
How do I know if my RX-8 engine is bad?
Hot start problems (signs of poor compression). Growling noise and loss of power (sticking SSV or tune valves). Engine Management Light flashing whilst driving (real-time detection of engine misfire). Rattling Exhaust (catalyst damaged with ceramic in the rear section of exhaust).
How long do RX-8 engines last?
While many have 100,000+ mile lifespan, far too many have gone far less. There is no single item that can be changed to double the engine life. It requires four changes AND your adherence to common maintenances that all cars require (oil changes, air filter service, etc.).

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-22
- VIN: JM1FE173460
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: MY VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A DEFECT KNOWN TO MAZDA TO THE EXTENT OF THEM ISSUING A RECALL (OR SSP) IN THE CANADIAN MARKET DUE TO USE OF CORROSIVES AND EXCESSIVE WET SEASONS CAUSING BUILD UP ON AND CORROSION OF THE OIL COOLER LINES. MAZDA CLEARLY STATED IN THE CANADIAN SSP (#76) THAT EXTENSIVE CORROSION COULD CAUSE A LEAK AND/OR LOSS OF PRESSURE, AND KNOWING THAT A LOSS OF PRESSURE OR A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF OIL WHILE THE CAR WAS IN OPERATION WOULD CAUSE DRASTIC MECHANICAL ENGINE FAILURE BY WAY OF BURNING OUT THE SEALS/ROTORS/BEARINGS AND EVENTUAL SEIZURE OR TOTAL LOSS OF COMPRESSION IN THE MOTOR. THE LOSS OF OIL PRESSURE DUE TO CORROSION DIRECTLY RESULTING FROM THIS CAUSED MY APEX SEALS TO OVERHEAT AND NO LONGER PROVIDE A SEAL TO ALLOW THE MOTOR TO HOLD COMPRESSION. DUE TO THIS FAILURE DIRECTLY CAUSED BY THE KNOWN DEFECT, AND THE FACT THAT THE ISSUE WAS PUT IN PLACE FOR CANADA DUE TO THEIR HIGH PROPENSITY FOR EXTENDED WET SEASONS AND HIGH USE OF CORROSIVES TO ALLEVIATE WINTERY CONDITIONS ON THE ROADWAYS, MAZDA SHOULD ALSO HAVE ISSUED REGIONAL OR CASE-BY-CASE RECALLS OF VEHICLES THAT EXPERIENCE THIS SAME DEFECT IN AREAS OF THE UNITED STATES THAT EXPERIENCE SIMILAR CONDITIONS. HAD I BEEN TRAVELLING ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT ON A 25MPH CITY ROAD, I COULD HAVE EXPERIENCE A MAJOR ACCIDENT OR INCIDENT BECAUSE OF MY MOTOR FAILURE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS OTHER CASES OF THIS DEFECT SHOWING IN AMERICAN VEHICLES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, FROM NEAR ME (IN NEW ENGLAND) TO CALIFORNIA THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED ONLINE. I CAN CONTACT THE LICENSED MECHNIC WHO DEALT WITH THE VEHICLE FOR COPIES OF HIS WORK ORDERS, AND I HAVE RECEIPTS TO PROVE THAT I PURCHASED OIL COOLER LINES AS REPLACEMENTS BEFORE I KNEW OF THE LOSS OF COMPRESSION AND RUINED MOTOR. MAZDA USA WAS OF NO HELP IN ALLEVIATING THE PROBLEM, AND I AM NOW OUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON A VEHICLE THAT I HAD RECENTLY PURCHASED BEFORE THE EVENT OCCURRED
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-02-21
- VIN: JM1FE173960
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON THE EVENING OF FEBRUARY 21ST. I WAS STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT AND THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN SO I PRESSED ON THE CLUTCH TO GET THE CAR IN GEAR, WHEN I PUSHED DOWN HOWEVER, THE CLUTCH MADE A LARGE SNAPPING SOUND AND MOVED DOWN A LITTLE FURTHER THAN USUAL. I WENT TO PUT THE CAR BACK INTO GEAR ANYWAY AND NOTICED THAT THE CLUTCH WAS MUCH LOOSER THAN BEFORE. IT WAS WIGGLING FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND HAD MUCH MORE DEAD SPACE BEFORE IT CAUGHT ON THE ACTUAL CLUTCH. I ALSO NOTICED IT WAS MUCH MUCH HARDER TO GET MY CAR INTO GEAR. I HAVE TO PUSH AND SLAM THE STICK INTO GEAR IN ORDER TO GET IT TO FIT. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND THIS WAS ACTUALLY A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR THE 2004-2007 MAZDA RX-8'S. THE CAR CAN STILL BE DRIVEN, HOWEVER I BELIEVE THE FULL CLUTCH SHAFT COULD SNAP OFF IF PRESSED TO HARD.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-11-20
- VIN: JM1FE173760
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: CLUTCH PEDAL SNAP OFF ISSUE WITH RX-8 OWNERS CONTINUES TO BE A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN, AS THE WELDS HOLDING THE PEDAL TOGETHER CAN AND WILL SNAP, LEAVING THE DRIVER UNABLE TO CHANGE GEARS OR USE THEIR VEHICLE, EVEN IF IN OPERATION AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED WITH MY VEHICLE AS OF 11/20/17. THE WARRANTY MAZDA HAS ISSUED SIMPLY IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH, AS THE WARRANTY SIMPLY REPLACES THE BROKEN CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET WITH ONE OF THE SAME DESIGN & FLAW THAT WILL LEAD TO THE SAME FAILURE. MY VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND I WAS ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE GEARS ACCELERATING WHEN THIS OCCURRED.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-17
- VIN: JM1FE173860
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL. MY 2006 MAZDA RX8 HAS HAD TWO RECALLS DONE ON IT. THE 2ND OWNER HAD IT DONE AND AFTERWARDS A SMALL CRACK STARTED FROM ONE POINT WHERE IT WAS REPAIRED. WE HAD IT DONE IN GAINESVILLE AGAIN AND BROUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING EXCEPT TO BUY A NEW DASH. THE CRACKS HAVE CONTINUED TO SPREAD AND I'M CONCERNED THAT IF THE AIR BAG INFLATES PERSONAL INJURY COULD BE DONE TO THE PASSENGER FROM PARTS OF THE DASH EXPLODING. I WILL NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO RIDE IT THE PASSENGERS SEAT BECAUSE OF THIS. THIS CONTINUES TO GET WORSE OVER TIME NOT ON A CERTAIN DAY. WE KEEP A SUNSHADE IN THE WINDOW HOPING THAT WILL SLOW IT DOWN BUT TO NOW AVAIL. THIS IS A PLEASURE CAR AND ONLY AS LESS THAN 36000 MILES ON IT AND IT NOT ABUSED.

- Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE
- Summary: I PURCHASED/FINANCED MY VEHICLE ON OCTOBER 9, 2015 AT HILLTOP NISSAN (258 ROUTE 10, EAST HANOVER, NJ 07936) AT 59,201 MILES. ON APRIL 7, 2016, I WENT TO START THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. I HAD IT TOWED TO MAZDA OF LODI, SO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CAN TAKE A LOOK AT THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONTACTED ME AND SAID IT WAS THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 63,545 MILES ON IT, AND SINCE THEN, I DROVE ONLY 4,344 MILES IN THE SIX MONTHS. I ASKED THE DEALER, FINANCE DEPARTMENT FOR A WARRANTY/EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THE FINANCE MANAGER SAID, THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES. I DID NOT RECEIVE A WHITE (SQUARE) PIECE OF PAPER OR BOOKLET FOR WARRANTY INFORMATION OR "AS IS" INFORMATION. NOW, I AM PAYING $8500.00 FOR A NEW ENGINE. THEN, I SEARCHED ONLINE FOR ANY SAFETY ISSUES OR RECALLS ON VINRCL.SAFECAR.GOV. I FOUND OUT THAT THIS VEHICLE HAS A DEVASTATING SAFETY RECALL INVOLVING THE AIRBAGS. (THERE WAS ALSO A RECALL MANY YEARS AGO INVOLVING THE ENGINE, AND THAT MAZDA RX-8 OWNERS CAN RETURN THE VEHICLE, BY CHOICE, FOR A FULL REFUND??) THE DEALER, HILLTOP NISSAN, DID NOT NOTIFY ME ABOUT THIS RECALL. THEY SOLD ME A USED CAR WITH A SERIOUS SAFETY AIRBAG RECALL. (ALSO: RECALLS ON A ENGINE) ISSUE: I HAVE A SERIOUS DEFECT INVOLVING AIRBAGS THAT DISPENSE SHRAPNEL. I WONDER WHAT OTHER SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES INVOLVING THE ENGINE/VEHICLE THAT WERE NOT DISCLOSED? I am delighted to own an 06 Shinka, which I believe is one of the best values available. The car offers exceptional comfort, engine response, appearance, and overall package that cannot be matched. It handles like a dream, and the smooth M6 is a joy to drive. The Shinka gets more looks than my BMW did, and it costs much less to maintain. I am particularly impressed with the great handling and convenience package offered in the Shinka.

I've had this car for a couple of weeks now and I must say, it's absolutely awesome! I was looking for something sporty and fun, and the RX-8 definitely delivers. Although I was a little surprised by the actual MPG (so far 16 MPG after two fuelings), the handling is simply incredible. I've even managed to get it up to 123 mph and it handled like a dream. If you're looking for a sports car that's not a dime a dozen, then this is definitely the one for you. Everyone who's seen it has been impressed, and believe it or not, the back seats are actually quite roomy. So, if you're in your thirties and not quite ready to commit to a family car, then this is the perfect choice. Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the RX-8 that I purchased in mid-May. I've already driven over 1000 miles and I have to say, the handling of this car just keeps getting better with each mile. While I didn't buy this car for its torque or gas mileage (which is slightly below average), I think the trade offs are definitely worth it. The engine revs smoothly, has a high powerband, and the body style is really unique. Plus, the car handles great on tight corners!

The RX-8 is an amazing car that offers great all-around performance. While some may criticize its torque, it still provides plenty of power, especially when you shift gears (which is part of the fun!). It's important to note that the RX-8 is a sports car, so if fuel economy is a major concern, a hybrid may be a better option. However, if you're looking for a fun and exciting car that can seat four people, the RX-8 is definitely worth considering.

I have owned my RX-8 for exactly one month. I must say, this car is the most fun vehicle I have ever driven. The interior is very sharp and all the controls and design are very well put together.

It's a beautiful car that's fun to drive, but it may not be perfect just yet. I waited until 2006 to get mine so Mazda could work out the kinks of a new design, but I still experienced some of the same issues found in the 04s. If you're considering buying one, I recommend purchasing a used car after reviewing a report of repairs. Some cars are great, while others are not so great, so it's important to do your research. Look for a used car with 30K - 40K miles that hasn't had its engine replaced, and you should be happy with your purchase. Lastly, I would advise against buying a 6-speed AT, as the transmission won't let the car rev high enough to burn out the carbon build-up. Personally, I love rotaries, but they should be MT. I'm selling this one and sticking to my '79 RX-7 for my rotary fun (which is still running).

The car handles well and is fun to drive around corners. Although it may require downshifting several gears to get usable power, it still provides a great driving experience. Gas mileage is a concern, with an average of 18-20 MPG, especially for highway driving. However, everything inside the car is positioned well and within reach, making it easy to use. Overall, it's a great car with minor concerns about passing power and fuel consumption.

I felt sentimental for my twin turbo RX7 when I bought this car. Although it's not the same car, there is a sense of familiarity to it. I find it better behaved and more pleasant to live with day in and day out. I have had no mechanical complaints so far. While fuel economy and oil consumption are part of the rotary experience, I would have appreciated a larger fuel tank. I have also owned a TT, and while the RX falls short in terms of fit, finish, and style, it's more enjoyable to drive, has room for my kids, and is much more affordable!
