Mazda Rx-8 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.

The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.

The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

Common Mazda Rx-8 problems

The Mazda RX-8 is a four-door sports coupe known for its unique rotary engine and sleek design. However, it has been plagued with several common problems that have affected its reliability and overall owner satisfaction.

  • Engine Problems: The Mazda RX-8's rotary-style engine is widely reported to be unreliable. The engine's check engine warning light on the dashboard is a key indicator of a faulty engine. Other common signs include a smoking exhaust, overheating, and poor fuel economy. The engine's susceptibility to problems increases once it reaches 60,000 miles, making it pricey to run.
  • Power Steering Problems: Mazda RX-8 power steering problems have been reported by some owners, with the power steering going in and out randomly. This issue can be dangerous, especially at high speeds or in tight parking spots.
  • Airbag Issues: The Mazda RX-8 has had airbag issues, with excessive pressure causing the inflator to rupture during airbag deployment, posing a risk of injury to occupants.
  • Fuel Cap and Fuel Tank Problems: The Mazda RX-8 has had issues with fuel caps cracking and fuel tank caps loosening, leading to a risk of fuel loss and fire.
  • Steering Problems: Steering issues have been reported in the Mazda RX-8, with cracks forming on the front lower transverse link socket, impairing steering.
  • Catalytic Converter Failure: The Mazda RX-8's catalytic converter is prone to failure, which can be costly to replace. This issue is often caused by jumpy acceleration, which can damage the converter.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: The Mazda RX-8's ignition coils can fail, particularly as the engine reaches the 30,000-mile mark, leading to engine problems and increased emissions.

In summary, the Mazda RX-8 has several common problems, including faulty starter motors, unreliable engines, power steering issues, airbag problems, fuel cap and fuel tank issues, steering problems, catalytic converter failure, and ignition coil failure. These issues have contributed to the car's poor reliability and high running costs, making it a less desirable choice for many car buyers.

Do Mazda RX-8 have problems?

One of the most reported RX8 problems revolves around its engine. Its unique high-performance rotary-style engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.

What year Mazda RX-8 to avoid?

RX-8 Generations

The RX-8 has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 1st generation (2004–2008).

Is a Mazda RX-8 a good car?

Mazda's design for the RX-8 was notable for its similarity to European coupes, a small yet potent sports car. But while its profile and power pleased many, the RX-8 proved to be a costly ride when it came to running costs, particularly at the pump.

How long will a RX-8 engine last?

It's no secret that the RX-8 has had a spotty record with engine life. While many have 100,000+ mile lifespan, far too many have gone far less. There is no single item that can be changed to double the engine life.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-03-29

  • Summary: Engine naturally wears out especially after 200k miles due to friction in the natural design of the Rotary engine, resulting in losing its overall function such as turning off in the middle of a drive due to loss of compression from worn Apex Seals of the Rotary. The rotary engine requires a replacement of the Apex Seals to continue functioning normally to avoid any unpredictable accidents due to engine failure. An event occurred where my RX-8 went into limp mode in the middle of the freeway as i was commuting due a misfire from poor compression, this is more then likely a common event nowadays for RX-8 owners starting at the S1 2004 models with newer models soon to follow the same incident as me. This is completely unsafe especially traveling at 65 MPH

Latest negative Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

  1. Terrell Hudson 2025-07-09

    Vehicle year: 2004

I purchased this car for its sleek look, but unfortunately encountered engine problems. Despite having all maintenance repairs done at the Mazda service center, the corporation declined all repairs and refused to honor the warranty. It is disappointing that they did not take responsibility for the faulty engine. I strongly advise against purchasing this car.

  2. Gene McGlynn 2025-07-01

    Vehicle year: 2008

The engine only lasted for two years despite following all recommendations, and unfortunately, replacing it would have cost over $6,000. Additionally, there was a leak in the car that resulted in black mold growing under the seats, which may have been caused by the previous owner or a fault in the vehicle. Despite these issues, the car was enjoyable to drive.

  3. Sylvan Hodkiewicz 2025-06-28

    Vehicle year: 2004

Although the appearance and acceleration around 5k RPM were enjoyable, the vehicle ultimately had numerous issues.

  4. Kaden Von 2025-06-16

    Vehicle year: 2005

I bought the car because of its looks and the exciting zoom, zoom, zoom I felt when accelerating. During one of my visits to the dealership, they made a recommended adjustment due to a grinding/rattle noise that had been present since day one. Unfortunately, the responsiveness was never the same after that. Just after the 5-year warranty ran out, I discovered that the vibration I was feeling was due to the engine mounts being kaput. It turns out that this was a known problem that the dealership in St. Pete had received a bulletin on, but they never informed me. They quoted me $700 to fix it, but we were able to purchase Mazda mounts from an online dealership and have them installed by Midas for a total cost of $300. Soon after, the airbag light came on, either flashing or staying on permanently, so I will need to take it in again.

  5. Saige Schroeder 2025-06-07

    Vehicle year: 2007

I've owned my RX-8 for just over a year and I must say that I love almost everything about the car. However, I have had some issues with it, mainly due to dealers that don't seem to know much about the car. Unfortunately, the car has spent over a month in the shop and it now has a power problem where it loses power after driving. Despite having taken it to 2 different dealers, the issue has not been resolved and I am now being charged for diagnosis and rentals, even though they have duplicated the problem. Mazda has not been very helpful in this regard and I feel that the car is a lemon and they are not standing behind it. I even filmed the problem for them, but they still say it doesn't happen! In conclusion, while the car is great, I have had a terrible experience with the car company and I have decided that this will be my last Mazda. I would advise against buying a Mazda.

Latest positive Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

  1. Federico Rolfson 2025-07-12

    Vehicle year: 2007

The car is amazing! It's so smooth, fast, and comfortable for a sports coupe. I love driving it so much that I find excuses to get behind the wheel. Although I also have a 2007 Mercedes C230 Sports with AMG package, which is an excellent car in its own right, the feeling of driving the RX-8 is just unbeatable. The Mercedes provides a luxurious sporty feel, while the RX-8 makes me want to hit the road and have some fun. It's so enjoyable to drive that I have to remind myself not to drive like a teenager, which is really hard. You should definitely try the car out. I'm sure you'll want to trade in your car right away!

  2. Jasper Carter 2025-07-10

    Vehicle year: 2010

This car is perfect for those who are familiar with rotary engines. You should be aware that the car requires the oil to be checked every time you fill up and it should be left to run for at least five minutes before turning it off. As far as I know, these are the only obligations you have that differ from regular cars. Personally, I have no problem with this. The sound is unique and the car is not lightning quick, but it is very fast once it gets up to speed. The handling is a dream at any speed and the leather seats are a nice touch, along with all the other features that come with a loaded vehicle. Additionally, it has a great warranty and the redesigned rotary eliminates the problems (internal leaks) from 04 to 06. If you're interested, I recommend getting a brochure from the dealer and test driving one. That's the best way to decide on any car.

  3. Beau Considine 2025-07-09

    Vehicle year: 2011

This car is really impressive, but sometimes it can be a bit overpriced. Additionally, due to its engine, it can be difficult to know if the dealer is being completely honest about the car's quality.

  4. Jaeden Tremblay 2025-07-07

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hello there! I came across many posts by men, who I assume are younger than me, that mention phrases like 'this is not your grandma's car' or 'not your girlfriend's car'. Well, let me tell you something, I am a 54-year-old grandma of seven and I own an RX 8, not my husband. I love driving it and pushing it to its limits, even though my husband complains when I take corners fast. This car has had some issues, but it is still the best handling car I have ever owned. So, let's stop being chauvinistic when it comes to sports cars. In fact, I have even put some men in their place who wanted to take me on! Thank you for listening to my story.

  5. Wilford Hane 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2010

The rotary engine in the RX-8 is truly impressive and makes driving this car a lot of fun. Unfortunately, not everyone understands the unique qualities of a rotary engine, but if you do, you'll appreciate the power and quickness it provides. The R3 suspension also adds to the sporty feel of the car. It's important to know how to drive the RX-8 to fully experience its horsepower. This car is not for everyone, but if you and the RX-8 bond, you'll have an inseparable relationship and enjoy the excitement of Zoom-Zoom on the roads. With the RX-8, you'll have no fear of curves or any challenges you may encounter on your travels. Here's to the ROTARY engine and its forever-lasting legacy!
