Mazda Rx-8 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.

The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.

The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

Common Mazda Rx-8 problems

The Mazda RX-8 is a four-door sports coupe known for its unique rotary engine and sleek design. However, it has been plagued with several common problems that have affected its reliability and overall owner satisfaction.

  • Engine Problems: The Mazda RX-8's rotary-style engine is widely reported to be unreliable. The engine's check engine warning light on the dashboard is a key indicator of a faulty engine. Other common signs include a smoking exhaust, overheating, and poor fuel economy. The engine's susceptibility to problems increases once it reaches 60,000 miles, making it pricey to run.
  • Power Steering Problems: Mazda RX-8 power steering problems have been reported by some owners, with the power steering going in and out randomly. This issue can be dangerous, especially at high speeds or in tight parking spots.
  • Airbag Issues: The Mazda RX-8 has had airbag issues, with excessive pressure causing the inflator to rupture during airbag deployment, posing a risk of injury to occupants.
  • Fuel Cap and Fuel Tank Problems: The Mazda RX-8 has had issues with fuel caps cracking and fuel tank caps loosening, leading to a risk of fuel loss and fire.
  • Steering Problems: Steering issues have been reported in the Mazda RX-8, with cracks forming on the front lower transverse link socket, impairing steering.
  • Catalytic Converter Failure: The Mazda RX-8's catalytic converter is prone to failure, which can be costly to replace. This issue is often caused by jumpy acceleration, which can damage the converter.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: The Mazda RX-8's ignition coils can fail, particularly as the engine reaches the 30,000-mile mark, leading to engine problems and increased emissions.

In summary, the Mazda RX-8 has several common problems, including faulty starter motors, unreliable engines, power steering issues, airbag problems, fuel cap and fuel tank issues, steering problems, catalytic converter failure, and ignition coil failure. These issues have contributed to the car's poor reliability and high running costs, making it a less desirable choice for many car buyers.

Do Mazda RX-8 have problems?

One of the most reported RX8 problems revolves around its engine. Its unique high-performance rotary-style engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.

What year Mazda RX-8 to avoid?

RX-8 Generations

The RX-8 has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 1st generation (2004–2008).

Is a Mazda RX-8 a good car?

Mazda's design for the RX-8 was notable for its similarity to European coupes, a small yet potent sports car. But while its profile and power pleased many, the RX-8 proved to be a costly ride when it came to running costs, particularly at the pump.

How long will a RX-8 engine last?

It's no secret that the RX-8 has had a spotty record with engine life. While many have 100,000+ mile lifespan, far too many have gone far less. There is no single item that can be changed to double the engine life.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-09
  • Date Complaint: 2023-03-29
  • VIN: JM1FE173440
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine naturally wears out especially after 200k miles due to friction in the natural design of the Rotary engine, resulting in losing its overall function such as turning off in the middle of a drive due to loss of compression from worn Apex Seals of the Rotary. The rotary engine requires a replacement of the Apex Seals to continue functioning normally to avoid any unpredictable accidents due to engine failure. An event occurred where my RX-8 went into limp mode in the middle of the freeway as i was commuting due a misfire from poor compression, this is more then likely a common event nowadays for RX-8 owners starting at the S1 2004 models with newer models soon to follow the same incident as me. This is completely unsafe especially traveling at 65 MPH

Latest negative Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

  1. Oswaldo Kreiger 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2011

I recently purchased a brand new JDM import, but unfortunately, the steering rack has been rattling incessantly despite the car only having 10,000 km on it. While this has been frustrating, I am currently in negotiations with the dealer to have the steering rack switched. On the bright side, the car is fantastic! It has a great engine, handles well, has a comfortable cabin, and looks great too!

  2. Kellen Cruickshank 2024-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2005

I experienced significant issues with my 2004 RX8 car, including frequent breakdowns and the need for a new motor at only 12000 miles. The car would vibrate and shake violently, and I was afraid it would leave me stranded. Additionally, it had a tendency to flood itself, which was very frustrating. Despite my initial attraction to the car's appearance, I ultimately found it to be the worst car I have ever owned. However, I was able to resolve the issue with the help of an attorney, and Mazda ultimately bought the car back as it was deemed a lemon.

  3. Humberto Hauck 2024-11-22

    Vehicle year: 2006

It's a beautiful car that's fun to drive, but it may not be perfect just yet. I waited until 2006 to get mine so Mazda could work out the kinks of a new design, but I still experienced some of the same issues found in the 04s. If you're considering buying one, I recommend purchasing a used car after reviewing a report of repairs. Some cars are great, while others are not so great, so it's important to do your research. Look for a used car with 30K - 40K miles that hasn't had its engine replaced, and you should be happy with your purchase. Lastly, I would advise against buying a 6-speed AT, as the transmission won't let the car rev high enough to burn out the carbon build-up. Personally, I love rotaries, but they should be MT. I'm selling this one and sticking to my '79 RX-7 for my rotary fun (which is still running).

  4. Salvador Conroy 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2007

Firstly, this car is an absolute blast to drive! It handles incredibly well. I average around 18 mpg on premium fuel, and although I personally haven't had any reliability issues, I do go easy on the rotary. There are plenty of aftermarket parts available for it, and it turns heads everywhere it goes. Overall, it's a fantastic car if you're willing to spend a little more on gas and maintenance.

  5. Werner Larkin 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2007

Hi there! I've noticed that I've unintentionally redlined this vehicle a few times. It seems like the engine doesn't sound like it's over-revving even when the RPMs are in the redline. This means I have to keep my eye on the tach more often than in a car with a conventional engine, which can be a bit inconvenient. Also, I haven't been getting the advertised fuel economy, which was already low compared to a car with a conventional engine for the same horsepower.

    Vehicle year: 2005

Congratulations on your purchase! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2005 car with 26K miles. Although you had to replace the tires with snow tires, it's great that you're prepared for winter in the Midwest. It's also fantastic that the warranty covered the alternator replacement at no cost to you. The car's fuel economy of about 19 MPH combined Hwy, City is reasonable. While the rear quarter view is restricted, it's still acceptable. I'm happy to hear that you find the car fun to drive, and that you have the option of automatic or manual shifting. The interior is roomy and comfortable, even for someone who is 6'2

  2. Berta Jast 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2008

I've owned three RX 8s so far - a 2006 Shinka, a 2007 GT RX8, and now the 2008 40th Anniversary Edition. People always stop and admire the car, even those driving Porsches and other sports cars. The handling on this one is great, much better than my 2007. As for gas mileage, as many before me have said, when you buy a sports car, you don't expect great gas mileage. I've been driving rotary engine cars since the 76 RX4, and I never tire of it. All you have to do is drive one, and you'll know you've gotten into something special.

  3. Dallas Gulgowski 2024-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2006

I am delighted to own an 06 Shinka, which I believe is one of the best values available. The car offers exceptional comfort, engine response, appearance, and overall package that cannot be matched. It handles like a dream, and the smooth M6 is a joy to drive. The Shinka gets more looks than my BMW did, and it costs much less to maintain. I am particularly impressed with the great handling and convenience package offered in the Shinka.

  4. Ellis Harber 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 2008

This is a great car! I love the power it has when the revs are high. I haven't had to take it in for service at all. I change the oil myself and have run octane boost through it once to clean it out, and it has been nothing but reliable. The paint does seem to chip easily, though, which is a shame since the look is my favorite part of the car. The gas mileage could be better, but overall, I'm really happy with it!

  5. Lavern Dach 2024-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2004

I absolutely adore my RX-8! After years of driving minivans and station wagons, it's a breath of fresh air. While I have had a couple of recall notices, the dealership was quick to handle the issues. The only other concern I have is that the car seems to use oil, but the dealership is documenting the issue just in case. During two road trips, the 'check engine' light came on and the oil was slightly low, which is a bit worrying. However, I'm willing to wait and see because I want this car to be reliable for the long haul.
