Mazda Rx-8 problems

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.
The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.
The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

Common Mazda Rx-8 problems
The Mazda RX-8 is a four-door sports coupe known for its unique rotary engine and sleek design. However, it has been plagued with several common problems that have affected its reliability and overall owner satisfaction.
- Engine Problems: The Mazda RX-8's rotary-style engine is widely reported to be unreliable. The engine's check engine warning light on the dashboard is a key indicator of a faulty engine. Other common signs include a smoking exhaust, overheating, and poor fuel economy. The engine's susceptibility to problems increases once it reaches 60,000 miles, making it pricey to run.
- Power Steering Problems: Mazda RX-8 power steering problems have been reported by some owners, with the power steering going in and out randomly. This issue can be dangerous, especially at high speeds or in tight parking spots.
- Airbag Issues: The Mazda RX-8 has had airbag issues, with excessive pressure causing the inflator to rupture during airbag deployment, posing a risk of injury to occupants.
- Fuel Cap and Fuel Tank Problems: The Mazda RX-8 has had issues with fuel caps cracking and fuel tank caps loosening, leading to a risk of fuel loss and fire.
- Steering Problems: Steering issues have been reported in the Mazda RX-8, with cracks forming on the front lower transverse link socket, impairing steering.
- Catalytic Converter Failure: The Mazda RX-8's catalytic converter is prone to failure, which can be costly to replace. This issue is often caused by jumpy acceleration, which can damage the converter.
- Ignition Coil Failure: The Mazda RX-8's ignition coils can fail, particularly as the engine reaches the 30,000-mile mark, leading to engine problems and increased emissions.
In summary, the Mazda RX-8 has several common problems, including faulty starter motors, unreliable engines, power steering issues, airbag problems, fuel cap and fuel tank issues, steering problems, catalytic converter failure, and ignition coil failure. These issues have contributed to the car's poor reliability and high running costs, making it a less desirable choice for many car buyers.
Do Mazda RX-8 have problems?
One of the most reported RX8 problems revolves around its engine. Its unique high-performance rotary-style engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.
What year Mazda RX-8 to avoid?
RX-8 Generations
The RX-8 has 2 generations, each with their own issues. Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 1st generation (2004–2008).
Is a Mazda RX-8 a good car?
Mazda's design for the RX-8 was notable for its similarity to European coupes, a small yet potent sports car. But while its profile and power pleased many, the RX-8 proved to be a costly ride when it came to running costs, particularly at the pump.
How long will a RX-8 engine last?
It's no secret that the RX-8 has had a spotty record with engine life. While many have 100,000+ mile lifespan, far too many have gone far less. There is no single item that can be changed to double the engine life.

- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-09
- Date Complaint: 2023-03-29
- VIN: JM1FE173440
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine naturally wears out especially after 200k miles due to friction in the natural design of the Rotary engine, resulting in losing its overall function such as turning off in the middle of a drive due to loss of compression from worn Apex Seals of the Rotary. The rotary engine requires a replacement of the Apex Seals to continue functioning normally to avoid any unpredictable accidents due to engine failure. An event occurred where my RX-8 went into limp mode in the middle of the freeway as i was commuting due a misfire from poor compression, this is more then likely a common event nowadays for RX-8 owners starting at the S1 2004 models with newer models soon to follow the same incident as me. This is completely unsafe especially traveling at 65 MPH

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice. It's always tough to give up a car you love, but it's great that you found something different and fun to enjoy. It's even better that you fit so comfortably in it, despite your height. The car's handling and responsiveness seem to be top-notch, making for a smooth and enjoyable ride. It's great to hear that it handled your favorite stretch of Highway 1 with ease. It sounds like this car has a lot of potential and is capable of exceeding your expectations.

Hey there! I see you're no stranger to rotary powered vehicles. I used to own an 86 first generation rx7 with a carbureted 12a 1.1 litter 2 rotor wankel, and it was an absolute blast! I'm now driving an 05 shinka, and let me tell you, I couldn't be happier with the quality and reliability of my vehicle. It's simple to work on, comfortable, and my AC still works fantastic at 115k miles. The car idles and pulls just fine, and burns oil just like it should. I've never had any overheating issues or had to top off coolant. I understand that the renesis wankel (what the engine is actually referred to) gets put down often, but I think it's just not for everyone. My car has a few indicator lights on, and I can't turn the DSC off without pulling the fuse, but hey, it's my money, and I don't regret purchasing this car. If you're looking to buy one, good luck finding a cheap one, and make sure to drive the car for a long time and really get it hot before you purchase it. Hope this helps!

I absolutely love driving this car! It's so much fun and has definitely exceeded my expectations. The handling is incredible and it always turns heads wherever I go. Although the suspension can be a bit stiff at times, it's been my reliable daily driver and weekend getaway car for over 3 years now. The interior is also really impressive with its sleek piano black center pieces and aluminum inserts. Compared to my previous cars, including a 98 Oldsmobile Aurora V8 and 03 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, the RX-8 is much faster and has superior handling. I also own a 2006 Civic Si which is sporty, but doesn't come close to the RX-8's performance. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a thrilling driving experience!

The Mazda RX8 may not be suitable for everyone due to its 1.3L rotary motor. However, if you are in search of a well-balanced, excellent handling, and decent accelerating sports car, then this is the perfect choice for you (although it's not a true sports car since it has 4 doors). I have achieved the best 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds by launching at 5k with no roll out on Perli Zero's. The Renie motor is more reliable than the 20B, although due to no forced induction, the motor loses a bit of torque and a few horsepower. But there is no need to worry as it makes up for it in the corners. This is a true luxury sports car available at a very well-equipped price of 25k, including heated seats, 6-speed manual, 6-disc CD changer, and many more options. Drive one and just know the limits of the motor.

I'm glad to hear that you haven't encountered any issues with your Superb Mazda RX-8! The fuel economy rate for its performance is very acceptable, and it's important to keep in mind that it's a sports car, not a Civic. The handling is superb, and it's even ranked #3 in America. Additionally, the braking is excellent and is rated #10 against all exotics. The performance is fantastic for a 1.3 Litre Rotary, with a 0-60 time of under 6.8 seconds, which is fast for any car. It's great value and nothing else comes close. This car is truly unique and it's no surprise that people often take a second look or comment on it. One person even mistook it for a new Porsche! I would definitely recommend this car - it's a great choice!

I recently purchased a Mazda car and unfortunately, I have had some issues with the engine. Although the warranty was supposed to cover the engine until 100,000 miles, I was informed that it was not the case. Despite this setback, I am hopeful that Mazda will be able to assist me in resolving this issue. I did have to pay for some repairs, but unfortunately, the car is still not running as well as I had hoped. As a result, I am considering other options for my next car purchase. I would advise others to do their research before making a purchase. Thank you for your time.

Hello, I purchased an 04 RX8 in April 2010 and have driven it for 135,000 miles. While there have been some challenges, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and ownership. I have had to address some recalls, including the airbag recall, which cost $1200 to fix. Despite some difficulties, I have found that the RX8 is a unique and exciting car to own. While it may not be for everyone, I have enjoyed the experience of owning this car and have learned a lot about car maintenance and ownership.

I love the RX-8! It reminds me of my first car, which was my mom's 1984 RX-7. The RX-8 is just as nimble and smooth, and it feels like driving a go-kart. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it definitely has a lot of pep and is perfect for those who don't prioritize drag racing. The handling is fantastic, and the car looks amazing both inside and out. The nav system is a great feature, and I love that the screen can be folded away when not in use. The Bose stereo is also impressive, although it can get a bit too loud for my liking. The only downsides are the fuel economy, which is a bit on the high side, and the fact that the car can get quite hot inside due to the engine. On a hot, sunny day, the A/C can struggle to keep up. Overall, I highly recommend the RX-8!

The fuel economy of the current generation is expected to be better than the previous one, but it still falls short compared to conventional engines, given the power output. It is important to keep an eye on the RPM to know when to shift gears, as the engine does not provide an audible signal for this. Despite these challenges, I have found the car to be a reliable and enjoyable ride. However, there have been some issues with overrated specs and dealer denials, such as one instance where the car was overheating and the dealer refused to address it.

I purchased my 2004 Mazda RX8 brand new with only 4 miles on it. I took great care of this car, treating it like royalty, but unfortunately, it had some issues. The engine had to be replaced under warranty at 20k miles, and then it failed again just 2k miles outside of warranty. I ended up paying $7,000 for repairs, and the spark plugs were quite expensive at $100 each. Additionally, the tires were $200 each, and the car required premium gas at premium prices, which made the MPG quite poor. Unfortunately, $5 in gas wouldn't even get me out of my neighborhood. In 2012, I finally decided to part ways with the car due to the ongoing issues. The car had a tendency to shut off at red lights, in extreme temperatures, and required a 15-minute warm-up before driving. While I could go on for days about the issues, I must say that I would not recommend purchasing a 2004 Mazda RX8.
