The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.
The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.
The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

- Summary: The incident occurred on 02/08/2023. Prior to this, I brought my car to the dealership due to a recall to fix gas mounting rings, recall number . I do not feel comfortable with their repairs and I do not believe that the dealership performed the repairs properly which caused my car to smoke and stall on the road and then caught on fire at their shop. They claimed that their own business insurance fire fixed the damages but I believe that the car is damaged beyond repair. Furthermore, they held the car since February 2023. Until now, July 2023 the Guam dealership is unable to fix my car. To add, the repairs they claim far exceed the market value of the car and the car is at a total loss. I consider it totaled. - Summary: Engine naturally wears out especially after 200k miles due to friction in the natural design of the Rotary engine, resulting in losing its overall function such as turning off in the middle of a drive due to loss of compression from worn Apex Seals of the Rotary. The rotary engine requires a replacement of the Apex Seals to continue functioning normally to avoid any unpredictable accidents due to engine failure. An event occurred where my RX-8 went into limp mode in the middle of the freeway as i was commuting due a misfire from poor compression, this is more then likely a common event nowadays for RX-8 owners starting at the S1 2004 models with newer models soon to follow the same incident as me. This is completely unsafe especially traveling at 65 MPH

This roadster is amazing! It handles turns 20 mph faster than a Vette and is one solid automobile. To keep it running smoothly, be sure to check the oil regularly and consider joining a club for premium support. In terms of fuel efficiency, I get 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway at 75 mph, even without A/C. I love this car so much that I wish I could afford another 40th Aniv. Ed. to keep in my garage. I've already put 1000 miles on it in just 3 weeks and used 52 gallons of 93 octane and 1/2 quart of 5w/20. It's been a great ride so far!

If you're looking for a car that's universally loved for its handling prowess, especially for cars under $100k, and you want a unique vehicle with features like the only rotary engine available in a modern car, 'freestyle' doors that offer easier rear seat access while avoiding ridiculously long coupe doors, a 9000 rpm redline, and non-vanilla looks, then the RX-8 (now only available as used) is an excellent option. I purchased my R3 new for less than what Insideline paid for their FR-S, so the value factor is excellent too. I drive the R3 on a daily basis, except when there is salt/snow on the road. I swapped out the OEM summer tires, and the handling is still great. Mileage is not a problem for my 22-mile round trip. Update Jan 2016: mileage is up to 12,000 now and it has been very reliable. While the longevity may be lacking, the RX-8 is not like Jeeps, Jags, and Range Rovers where things stop working left and right, almost from day one, requiring you to replace the car little by little constantly. The RX-8 will not require much more than adding and changing oil, putting gas in it, pumping some air in the tires, etc in the first few years. Don't let the low price of entry fool you. If you want a lot of low-end (or any kind of) torque, need it to last 200k miles, stay away. Get a Solara or Accord coupe. This is a 9,000 RPM exotic engine. It is well-made, has no creaks or rattles. The piano-black interior is classy. I have been tempted by the FR-S/BRZ, but they are just a bit less refined. The Bose stereo is boomy and lacks the clarity found in slightly higher-end cars (my G37 has a Bose system too, which sounds great). The Bluetooth can be temperamental. No wonder the RX-8 sold very poorly. It really fills a tiny niche -- it fills it well -- but it is a very tiny niche. Five years later, due to the Takata airbag recall and the need to transport kids, I traded it for a 340i M sport manual.That was a tough experience. The F30 steering got worse as I drove it, so I decided to sell it a year later.

Although there are many horror stories associated with these cars, it is important to note that the majority of those cases are due to people not realizing how to care for their rotary engines. Unlike traditional engines, rotaries require specific preventative maintenance and care to ensure their longevity (there are many forums which list ways to care for your car). Simply letting it heat up before driving, revving it, and letting it cool down can lengthen the life of the engine by several thousand kilometers. However, like all Mazdas, rust issues are unavoidable, and winter driving should be avoided due to the tailhappiness of this car. Dealers are generally unhelpful, so it is recommended to go to a rotary specialist if possible. I was able to get my Rx-8 up to 235,000km by taking care of it, which only required an extra 5-10 minutes per day.

I was searching for a sportscar that was affordable, enjoyable to drive, spacious enough to accommodate four adults if needed, and not as common as the Z or Mustangs. Fortunately, I stumbled upon the RX8. This car ticks all the boxes and more. Although it may not be the quickest car out there, its handling more than makes up for it, and it is an absolute joy to drive.

With my wife's permission, I went looking for a Miata to replace our 2003 Sequoia. After test driving the RX-8, I got it sideways on a suburban and couldn't stop laughing. I went back and bought the car. The only problem is that my wife loves it so much that I now have to go back and buy her the Miata! Despite the poor fuel economy, everything else about the car is wonderful. As a family of three, it makes a great family sedan that can carve corners while going to the grocery store. Its shiny black form reminds us of the Batmobile and, between its shape and the angry shriek it makes as it runs up to 9,000 RPMs, it turns heads wherever it goes. You should definitely consider buying it!

Hi there! I'm 16 and I received this car for my birthday. I've taken excellent care of it and have guarded it with my life. Unfortunately, it seems to have a mind of its own and always stops running. It's been towed twice because it quit in my driveway. There have been so many recalls, it's not even funny. The airbags went bad, along with its computer. Oh, and it rattles so bad! I've owned 4 RX-7s (2nd/3rd generations) and loved them all! However, when I decided to give the 2004 RX-8 a try, I had a different experience. While I love the look, speed, and dynamics of the car, I found that the reliability was not up to par. Therefore, I would not recommend it as someone's primary source of transportation.

After a few years, this car is still tons of fun to drive! Although it may not be the best for heavy traffic commuting, it's a great road trip car with amazing handling. It turns and stops better than anything I've ever driven. While it may not be the best on snow or ice, it's an absolute hoot to drive above 5,000 rpm. It took some time and practice to learn how to maximize the performance, but once you figure out the engine, it's the easiest car to drive fast that I've ever experienced.

Our vehicle seems to be using more oil than expected, about 1 quart every 600 miles. It's a bit frustrating, but we'll make sure to keep an eye on it. According to the manual, the oil should be changed every 5000 miles, but we've noticed it needs to be changed more frequently. We hope Mazda Corp can address this issue and improve their selling practices. Despite these challenges, we're still enjoying our car and its 15 mpg. It may not be the most fuel-efficient, but it gets the job done!
