2007 Mazda Rx-8 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.

The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.

The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

Common 2007 Mazda Rx-8 problems

The Mazda RX-8, introduced in 2002 and available in North America from 2004 to 2011, is a sports car powered by a unique and high-performance rotary-style engine. However, this engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.

The power steering is another component that tends to cause issues in the RX-8. Various reports detail that the power steering randomly goes in and out, even with all connections appearing clean and tight.

The starter motor is another common problem in the RX-8. If it becomes difficult to start your car, the root of the issue is most likely being caused by the starter motor.

The catalytic converter is also prone to failing in the RX-8. If you are unsure if this is the issue you are having, one of the most common symptoms is a jumpy acceleration. When accelerating, your vehicle should do so smoothly. However, if it’s not smooth and feels jerky, it might be time to get your catalytic converter looked at.

The gear knob wiring becoming loose or breaking has become a common problem in the RX-8. If you are having issues with your gear knob not illuminating, you are not alone. Mazda did produce a modified version of the gear knob to resolve the issue.

In summary, the Mazda RX-8, while a great car, has several common problems that owners have reported. These include engine problems, power steering issues, starter motor faults, catalytic converter failure, and gear knob wiring problems. As with any vehicle, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues and maintain the car accordingly to ensure its longevity and reliability.

What is the common problem in Mazda RX-8?

Engine Problems

One of the most reported RX8 problems revolves around its engine. Its unique high-performance rotary-style engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.

What years to avoid RX-8?

Using the same PainRank™ system we've determined that you're better off avoiding the 1st generation (2004–2008).

  • 2nd Generation RX-8. Years 2009–2011 Reliability 5th out of 36 PainRank™ 0.34 Complaints 2.
  • 1st Generation RX-8. Years 2004–2008 Reliability 23rd out of 36 PainRank™ 3.6 Complaints 27.

How do I know if my RX-8 engine is bad?

Hot start problems (signs of poor compression). Growling noise and loss of power (sticking SSV or tune valves). Engine Management Light flashing whilst driving (real-time detection of engine misfire). Rattling Exhaust (catalyst damaged with ceramic in the rear section of exhaust).

How long do RX-8 engines last?

While many have 100,000+ mile lifespan, far too many have gone far less. There is no single item that can be changed to double the engine life. It requires four changes AND your adherence to common maintenances that all cars require (oil changes, air filter service, etc.).

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-15
  • VIN: JM1FE173170
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WE HAVE OWNED THIS 2007 MAZDA RX-8 FOR 3 YEARS. WE BOUGHT IT FOR OUR SON TO DRIVE, AND HE DRIVES IT DAILY TO WORK AND TO SCHOOL. THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET HAS BROKEN 3 TIMES, AND EACH TIME CAUSED CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTY IN SAFELY DRIVING THE CAR HOME, OR TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. I CAME VERY CLOSE TO BEING IN AN ACCIDENT DRIVING THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR THE SECOND TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED. EACH TIME THE BRACKET HAS BROKEN, THE DEALER (HILEY MAZDA, HUNTSVILLE, AL) REPLACED IT FOR NO COST, AS MAZDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE PART TO 8 YEARS / 100,000 MILES. BUT, EACH TIME THEY REPLACED THE BRACKET WITH EXACT SAME PART. SO, THE SAME INADEQUATE DESIGN FAILS AGAIN AND AGAIN. I BELIEVE MAZDA SHOULD HAVE REDESIGNED THIS PART AFTER IT FIRST BECAME APPARENT IT WAS PROBLEM, NOT JUST REPLACE IT WITH THE SAME INFERIOR (AND UNSAFE) PART. THIS DEFECT WAS INVESTIGATED BY SAFECAR.GOV IN 2009-2010 (REFERENCE NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE09045). I BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT PROMPTED MAZDA TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY. THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET BROKE, AND WAS REPLACED THE FIRST TIME ON 10/15/13, WITH 78,586 MILES ON THE CAR. THE SECOND FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT OCCURRED ON 4/23/14 WITH 83,115 MILES (ONLY 6 MONTHS LATER !). TODAY (7/13/15), THE BRACKET BROKE AGAIN WITH 93,560 MILES ON THE CAR. IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE HILEY MAZDA, HUNTSVILLE, AL DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. MY WIFE AND I ARE WRITING TO ENLIST THE HELP OF THE NHTSA TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. SINCE WE DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO PURCHASE ANOTHER CAR FOR OUR SON, WE FEEL THAT MAZDA NEEDS TO SATISFACTORILY ADDRESS THIS SAFETY ISSUE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION IN THIS MATTER. POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-04-20
  • VIN: JM1FE173070
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON I4, AND WENT TO SHIFT FROM 4TH GEAR TO 5TH GEAR; I HEARD A SNAP AND THE CLUTCH PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I THEN HAD ABOUT 2 INCHES OF TRAVEL IN MY CLUTCH PEDAL. THE CLUTCH PEDAL BREAKING IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MAZDA RX8S. NO, I DO NOT HAVE A HEAVY DUTY CLUTCH. *TR

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-07-04
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE PASSENGER SIDE DASHBOARD AREA IS ALL CRACKED UP AD SPLIT OPEN. THERE IS NO REASON FOR IT TO BE CRACKED OR SPLIT. THE CRACKING FOLLOWING THE SHAPE OF THE AIRBAG THAT IS UNDERNEATH THE DASHBOARD. IT HAS VERY JAGGED EDGES AND EXPOSES THE AIRBAG TO EXCESS LIGHT AND MOISTURE BY BEING SPLIT OPEN IN SO MANY PLACES. THE DASHBOARD STRUCTURE IS NOW WEAKENED DUE TO ALL OF THE CRACKS. AN EXPLOSION FROM THE AIRLOCK WOULD BE MORE POWERFUL THAN NECESSARY BECAUSE IT NO LONGER NEEDS TO BREAK THROUGH THE PLASTIC. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SAFETY CONCERN. DEALERS ONLY STATE IT AS A COSMETIC CONCERN AND DO NOTHING TO CORRECT IT. *TR

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-08-01
  • VIN: JM1FE173570
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: ON MY 2007 RX8 RIGHT DASHBOARD PASSENGER AIRBAG HAS CRACKED AND HAD MADE THE SHAPE OF THE AIRBAG. LOOKS LIKE THE AIRBAG CAN DEPLOY AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY TO DRIVER AND PASSENGER. THE DEALERSHIP OR MANUFACTURE WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN FIXING OR CORRECTING THE PROBLEM. THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE GARAGE SINCE I PURCHASED IT SO SUN IS NOT THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I CAN DO ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I GET THE MANUFACTURE TO REPAIR AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY BEFORE SOMEONE IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. *TR

  • Summary: I BOUGHT MY 2007 MAZDA RX FROM THE DEALERSHIP IN 2007. I HAVE CALLED AND COMPLAINED TO MAZDA USA ABOUT THE FRONT RIGHT PASSENGERS DASH CRACKING INTO THE SHAPE OF THE AIR BAG. ALSO, BOTH VISORS HAVE MELTED OFF THE CABLES. AGAIN, I HAVE CALLED BUT THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT IT IS MY PROBLEM TO FIX. AFTER READING SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM, I REALLY DON'T BELIEVE IT'S SOMETHING THAT I'VE DONE WRONG. *TR

AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-01
  • VIN: JM1FE173470
  • Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2007 MAZDA RX-8 NEW FROM A MAZDA DEALER. I STARTED NOTICING THAT THE DASHBOARD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE STARTING CRACKING AROUND THE AREA WHERE THE AIR BAG IS LOCATED. I HAVE REACHED OUT TO OCEAN MAZDA AND TO MAZDA USA. NO ONE TOOK THE TIME TO CALL ME BACK. I AM VERY UPSET AND CONCERNED THAT THE AIR BAG MAY DEPLOY WITHOUT WARNING SINCE THE DASH IS CRACKED OR WORST CASE SCENARIO THAT THE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY CORRECTLY WHEN IN A COLLISION. THIS VERY IS IN GREAT CONDITION WITH VERY LOW MILES AND SHOULD NOT HAVE A DASHBOARD THAT ONLY CRACKS AROUND THE PERFORATION LINES OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG. *TR

  • Summary: Mazda North America Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles manufactured April 10, 2003, to February 18, 2008. The affected vehicles have fuel pump sealing rings that may deteriorate due to exposure to heat from the engine or exhaust pipe.
  • Consequence: The deteriorated seals may leak fuel, which, in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump sealing ring set and add a thermal insulation pad to the fuel tank, free of charge. The recall began July 31, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 0516J.

Negative 2007 Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

After a few years, this car is still tons of fun to drive! Although it may not be the best for heavy traffic commuting, it's a great road trip car with amazing handling. It turns and stops better than anything I've ever driven. While it may not be the best on snow or ice, it's an absolute hoot to drive above 5,000 rpm. It took some time and practice to learn how to maximize the performance, but once you figure out the engine, it's the easiest car to drive fast that I've ever experienced.

Firstly, this car is an absolute blast to drive! It handles incredibly well. I average around 18 mpg on premium fuel, and although I personally haven't had any reliability issues, I do go easy on the rotary. There are plenty of aftermarket parts available for it, and it turns heads everywhere it goes. Overall, it's a fantastic car if you're willing to spend a little more on gas and maintenance.

Hi there! I've noticed that I've unintentionally redlined this vehicle a few times. It seems like the engine doesn't sound like it's over-revving even when the RPMs are in the redline. This means I have to keep my eye on the tach more often than in a car with a conventional engine, which can be a bit inconvenient. Also, I haven't been getting the advertised fuel economy, which was already low compared to a car with a conventional engine for the same horsepower.

  4. Kane McGlynn 2024-10-17

The engine only lasted for two years despite following all recommendations, and unfortunately, replacing it would have cost over $6,000. Additionally, there was a leak in the car that resulted in black mold growing under the seats, which may have been caused by the previous owner or a fault in the vehicle. Despite these issues, the car was enjoyable to drive.

Positive 2007 Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

Great car! I'm so glad to hear that you've had no problems with it after a year. The handling is excellent and it's so much fun to drive. Plus, the price is really good for the value you get. If you're looking for a reasonably priced sports car, this one is definitely a winner!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your RX8! It sounds like you made a great choice with all the available options and the 6 speed A/T. The paddle shifting must make it even more exciting to drive. It's great to hear that the handling is responsive and the ride is smooth. The rotary engine sounds like it's performing well too. I hope you continue to have fun driving your RX8 and take care on the roads! By the way, 22-23mpg mainly city driving is pretty impressive!

  3. Eli Heller 2024-09-18

I've been driving the car for 2 months now and I've noticed a few rattles and loose body parts on the interior. While I really enjoy driving the car, I have to admit that the gas mileage is quite poor. The power is definitely there if you're an active driver, but I've noticed that you need to keep it above 4000 Rpm for the real power to kick in. The power kicks in 2 stages, first at 5000 Rpm and then at 7500 Rpm...

  4. Norris Graham 2024-09-08

The RX-8 is such a blast to drive! It has amazing handling and cornering abilities, and a redline of 9000 RPM. While it may not have as much torque as I would prefer, that's not really what rotary motors are known for. Adding a turbo would easily solve the only issue I have with this car - an extra 80 ft/lb of torque and 30 hp would make it perfect!

  5. Archibald Schiller 2024-08-26

Owned 2005 and 2007. Greatly improved clutch and nice advanced keyless. Car handles amazingly on track. All owners need to drive on a lap track to appreciate handling of vehicle.
