2004 Mazda Rx-8 problems

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.
The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.
The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

Common 2004 Mazda Rx-8 problems
The Mazda RX-8, introduced in 2004, is known for its unique rotary engine and sporty design. However, it has faced several common problems that have affected its reliability and reputation. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:
- Gear Knob Light Failure: The gear knob wiring in the RX-8 can become loose or break, causing the gear knob not to illuminate. Mazda did produce a modified version of the gear knob to address this issue.
- Engine Problems: The rotary-style engine in the RX-8 has proven to be less reliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles. Warranty companies have even stated that these engines become more unreliable over time. The most common solution to this problem is to have your vehicle fitted for a replacement engine, which can be very expensive.
- Power Steering Problems: The power steering in the RX-8 is another common issue, with the system randomly going in and out even when all connections seem to be clean and tight. A low-risk DIY solution is to change the battery cable ends, specifically the white wire on the positive cable end that powers the power steering.
- Ignition System Issues: The ignition system in the RX-8 is weak, with underpowered starter engines, coil packs prone to failure, and plugs and wires that require frequent replacement. Worn-out ignition coil packs can lead to unburnt fuel and oil, which in turn can clog the catalytic converter and cause reduced performance, bad emissions, and eventually a check-engine light.
- Carbon Deposits: Carbon deposits can build up on the engine's oil injectors, causing blocked injectors that only spray oil on the sides of the engine rotors, leading to rapid engine wear.
- Recall Issues: The RX-8 has been subject to significant recalls, including the Takata airbag recall and recalls for control arms in the front suspension and the fuel pump.
- Rotary Engine Maintenance: The rotary engine in the RX-8 requires more maintenance than most modern drivetrains, with the apex seals being the fastest wearing component. When the apex seals break down, the engine burns oil and loses compression, eventually requiring an engine rebuild or replacement.
- Finding a Mechanic: Due to the unique nature of the rotary engine, finding a mechanic experienced with this type of engine can be challenging, and parts can be expensive.
While the Mazda RX-8 has faced several common problems, it remains a beloved sports car for automotive enthusiasts. However, if you're seeking reliable transportation, you may find the RX-8 to be problematic.
What are problems with a 2004 Mazda RX-8?
Common Mazda RX-8 Issues include: Hot start problems (signs of poor compression). Growling noise and loss of power (sticking SSV or tune valves). Engine Management Light flashing whilst driving (real-time detection of engine misfire).
What years to avoid Mazda RX-8?
Avoid the 2004-2006 cars. Mazda also tried to sell the Rx8 as a "normal" car with "normal" service intervals, which wasn't really adapted to the needs of a rotary engine!
What is the common problem on the RX-8?
Catalytic Converter Failure
When it comes to the Mazda RX8, the catalytic converter is prone to failing. If you are unsure if this is the issue you are having, one of the most common symptoms is a jumpy acceleration. When accelerating, your vehicle should do so smoothly.
How long do RX-8 engines last?
While many have 100,000+ mile lifespan, far too many have gone far less. There is no single item that can be changed to double the engine life. It requires four changes AND your adherence to common maintenances that all cars require (oil changes, air filter service, etc.).

AIR BAGS,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-01
- VIN: JM1FE17N140
- Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL I RECEIVED A CALL REGARDING AN 'ESCALATION' OF MY RECALL AND WHEN I CALLED BACK THE INDIVIDUAL ON THE PHONE SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND MY INFORMATION. THE LAST TIME I TRIED TO GET MY RX8 REPAIRED I WAS TOLD I HAVE TO DRIVE THE CAR OVER AN HOUR TO THE SHOP TO GET AIRBAG FIXED - THIS IS AFTER I RECEIVED A VERY GRAPHIC POSTCARD SHOWING AND TELLING ME HOW I WILL BE INJURED OR KILLED IF I DON'T GET MY CAR REPAIRED. I AM TRYING TO GET THIS CAR REPAIRED, HOWEVER I WILL NOT DRIVE THIS CAR OVER AN HOUR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC IN SOUTH TEXAS HEAT AND HUMIDITY IN ORDER TO MAKE THE REQUIRED 100% COMPLIANCE EASY FOR TAKATA THERE ARE MULTIPLE OTHER RECALLS ON THIS CAR, INCLUDING ON THE ENGINE THAT I HAVE REPLACED 4 TIMES. DEALERS WERE TOLD TO INSTALL THE OLD ENGINES THAT WERE IN THEIR INVENTORY AND NOT INSTALL THE NEW DESIGN. THE OLD ENGINES CONTINUED TO LOOSE COMPRESSION OVER TIME AND EVEN THOUGH MAZDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 100K ON THE VEHICLE, EVENTUALLY I EXCEEDED 100K - AND THE 4TH ENGINE WENT BAD @102K. MAZDA NEVER REPLACED THE ENGINE WITH AN ENGINE THAT DID NOT HAVE COMPRESSION ISSUES. THE DEALERS USED THE SAME ENGINE AND MAZDA WAITED FOR CONSUMERS TO EXCEED THE 100K MILEAGE AND THEN REFUSED TO PROVIDE ANY FURTHER ASSISTANCE. I HAVE A BEAUTIFUL RX8 THAT IS BASICALLY A ROLLING CHASIS BECAUSE IT WILL NOT RUN, OVERHEATS THE FUEL SYSTEM (CAN EXPLODE OR CATCH FIRE), AND AIRBAGS THAT CAN INJURE OR KILL ME AT ANY MOMENT. I CANT EVEN OPEN THE DOOR ON THIS CAR FOR FEAR OF INJURY OR DEATH. IF THE AIRBAGS WERENT AN ISSUE, I CANT DRIVE THE CAR BECAUSE THE ENGINE LOOSES COMPRESSION AND POWER AND CAN PUT THE DRIVER IN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IN TRAFFIC, AND FINALLY IF ALL ELSE WERE FUNCTIONING, THE EXHAUST CAN OVERHEAT THE FUEL TANK CAUSE EXPLOSION AND/OR FIRE. AT ONE POINT THE INTERIOR OF MY TRUNK MELTED. MY CAR HAS ZERO VALUE BECAUSE OF MAZDA AND TAKATA.

Hello there! I came across many posts by men, who I assume are younger than me, that mention phrases like 'this is not your grandma's car' or 'not your girlfriend's car'. Well, let me tell you something, I am a 54-year-old grandma of seven and I own an RX 8, not my husband. I love driving it and pushing it to its limits, even though my husband complains when I take corners fast. This car has had some issues, but it is still the best handling car I have ever owned. So, let's stop being chauvinistic when it comes to sports cars. In fact, I have even put some men in their place who wanted to take me on! Thank you for listening to my story.

The RX8 is a fantastic 4-door, 4-seat sports car. While it may lack low-end torque, it more than makes up for it with its exceptional handling. The rotary motor propels the 3100lb RX8 to 60mph in just 6.0 seconds, and it can cover a quarter-mile in 14.9 seconds. When it first came out, the RX8's fuel consumption was average at 17 city/24 highway. Thanks to its lightweight, stiff chassis and electronic steering, this car is incredibly easy to drive, even for those new to sports cars. However, it is worth noting that this car requires you to add oil about every 4 fill-ups. Overall, the RX8 is an excellent choice for highway commuters looking for a fun and exciting daily driver.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my '04 RX-8. I've owned 5 RX-7s since '84, and this one just turned 143K original miles with the last 60+K as track-only, since being replaced in '06 with a Prius daily driver. I've found that rotary reliability is entirely dependent on NEVER bogging the engine (detonation breaks the rotor seals in an instant) and routinely redlining the motor to minimize carbon build-up. Other than routine maintenance and strictly maintaining fluid levels, that's all one needs to know about keeping a rotary healthy. By the way, have you heard about the maintenance sheet that guarantees FREE LIFETIME REPLACEMENT BRAKE PADS (at least for the 1st gen RX-8s)? The pads last for about 4-6 track days (front brake rotors lasted to 130K after 40K of extreme

Have owned RX-3, R-4, and 2 RX-8s, never had to put an engine in one and over decades only once a stator went in the distributor in the1978 and need a tow. Never flooded one, neve nickeled and dimed by repairs. 2010 has 88k on it, runs like new. Just do your oil every 2500 to 3500 miles, top it off when down 16oz. Yes your fuel mileage will run from 16 mpg to 24 mpg. It doesn't need to be warmed up 15 minutes, you don't need to redline it every day, use a quality tier 1 gas to keep carbon down.

I have had no complaints about this vehicle. As a former RX-7 owner, I knew what to expect from the rotary engine. Although the RX-8 is not a replacement for the RX-7, it is still a sports car that remains civilized. I did experience a single problem with the exhaust, but it was covered under warranty. As expected with the first year of production and the reintroduction of the rotary engine after 8-9 years, there were a few issues. This car is for people who love cars and not for those who are easily inconvenienced. It is important to check the oil, let it warm up, and avoid driving a rear-wheel-drive sports car in snow. It is also worth noting that 9k RPMs will use more gas. These are just common sense tips that can help you enjoy your car even more.

I purchased this car for its sleek look, but unfortunately encountered engine problems. Despite having all maintenance repairs done at the Mazda service center, the corporation declined all repairs and refused to honor the warranty. It is disappointing that they did not take responsibility for the faulty engine. I strongly advise against purchasing this car.

Although the appearance and acceleration around 5k RPM were enjoyable, the vehicle ultimately had numerous issues.

I recently purchased a Mazda car and unfortunately, I have had some issues with the engine. Although the warranty was supposed to cover the engine until 100,000 miles, I was informed that it was not the case. Despite this setback, I am hopeful that Mazda will be able to assist me in resolving this issue. I did have to pay for some repairs, but unfortunately, the car is still not running as well as I had hoped. As a result, I am considering other options for my next car purchase. I would advise others to do their research before making a purchase. Thank you for your time.

Hello, I purchased an 04 RX8 in April 2010 and have driven it for 135,000 miles. While there have been some challenges, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and ownership. I have had to address some recalls, including the airbag recall, which cost $1200 to fix. Despite some difficulties, I have found that the RX8 is a unique and exciting car to own. While it may not be for everyone, I have enjoyed the experience of owning this car and have learned a lot about car maintenance and ownership.

I purchased my 2004 Mazda RX8 brand new with only 4 miles on it. I took great care of this car, treating it like royalty, but unfortunately, it had some issues. The engine had to be replaced under warranty at 20k miles, and then it failed again just 2k miles outside of warranty. I ended up paying $7,000 for repairs, and the spark plugs were quite expensive at $100 each. Additionally, the tires were $200 each, and the car required premium gas at premium prices, which made the MPG quite poor. Unfortunately, $5 in gas wouldn't even get me out of my neighborhood. In 2012, I finally decided to part ways with the car due to the ongoing issues. The car had a tendency to shut off at red lights, in extreme temperatures, and required a 15-minute warm-up before driving. While I could go on for days about the issues, I must say that I would not recommend purchasing a 2004 Mazda RX8.
