2010 Mazda Rx-8 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It was first shown in 2001 at the North American International Auto Show. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.

The Mazda RX-8 utilizes a rotary Wankel engine, and the non-reciprocating piston engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing, producing from 141 kW (189 hp) and 164 lb⋅ft (222 N⋅m) of torque, to 177 kW (237 hp) and 159 lb⋅ft (216 N⋅m) of torque from launch. A myriad of various drivetrains are available in the Mazda RX-8.

The RX-8 was discontinued for the 2012 model year without a successor. It was removed earlier from the European market in 2010 after the car failed to meet emissions standards. Due to falling sales from Europe coupled with rising Yen prices, Mazda could not justify the continued sale of the RX-8 in other markets. 192,094 units were produced during its 9-year production run.

Common 2010 Mazda Rx-8 problems

The Mazda RX-8, manufactured in 2010, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include faulty starter motors, catalytic converter failure, and gear knob light failure.

Faulty starter motors are a common problem in the RX-8, making it difficult to start the car. If you're experiencing difficulty starting your car, the starter motor is likely the root cause. Replacing the starter motor is the most common solution to this problem, which can be quite expensive.

Catalytic converter failure is another prevalent issue in the 2010 Mazda RX-8. When accelerating, if your vehicle feels jerky or jumpy, it might be a sign of a failing catalytic converter. This issue can be resolved by replacing the catalytic converter, which can be expensive. However, it's crucial to address this problem promptly, as it can lead to bigger issues.

Gear knob light failure is a common problem in the RX-8, where the gear knob wiring becomes loose or breaks. This issue can be resolved by replacing the gear knob with a modified version produced by Mazda. While this problem is not as expensive as the others, it can still be an inconvenience for RX-8 owners.

In addition to these problems, the 2010 Mazda RX-8 has been reported to have engine problems due to its unique high-performance rotary-style engine. This engine has proven to be less reliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles. Warranty companies have even gone as far as to say that Mazda has unofficially stated that these engines do become more unreliable over time. The most common solution to this problem is to have your vehicle fitted for a replacement engine, which can be very expensive.

Power steering problems are also common in the RX-8, where the power steering randomly goes in and out. This issue can be resolved by changing the battery cable ends, particularly on the positive cable end, where the white wire powers the power steering. Over time, this wire can become loose at the battery post, resulting in a bad connection. It's essential to have a certified professional check your work when making these types of updates/fixes to your vehicle.

In summary, while the 2010 Mazda RX-8 has several common problems, these issues can be resolved with the appropriate repairs and maintenance. As with any vehicle, it's crucial to stay informed about potential issues and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and reliability of your car.

What is the common problem in Mazda RX-8?

Engine Problems

One of the most reported RX8 problems revolves around its engine. Its unique high-performance rotary-style engine has proven to be more unreliable than expected, particularly after 60,000 miles.

What years to avoid Mazda RX-8?

Avoid the 2004-2006 cars. Mazda also tried to sell the Rx8 as a "normal" car with "normal" service intervals, which wasn't really adapted to the needs of a rotary engine!

What is the weakness of the RX-8?

What makes the RX8 so special is also it's one 'weakness'. Namely the nature of the rotary motor in a daily driver. The Renesis motor in the RX8 is a naturally aspirated rotary motor that tends to stop enjoying it's place in life around the 100k mile mark.

How do I know if my RX-8 engine is bad?

Hot start problems (signs of poor compression). Growling noise and loss of power (sticking SSV or tune valves). Engine Management Light flashing whilst driving (real-time detection of engine misfire). Rattling Exhaust (catalyst damaged with ceramic in the rear section of exhaust).

  • VIN: JM1FE1CP9A0
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THERE IS ALREADY A PRIOR RECALL ON LOWER CONTROL ARMS FOR EARLIER MADE MAZDA RX-8S. WHY ARE THE LATER MODELS ALSO NOT INCLUDED? IS IT BECAUSE THE MODEL I HAVE THERE WERE NOT AS MANY MADE, SO NOT AS MANY LEFT ON THE ROAD? YOU CAN HEAR A DULL POP WHEN TURNING THE CORNER TIME. FAMILY MEMBER IS A MECHANIC, HE ADVISED WHAT THIS WAS, AND TO CHECK FOR RECALL . . .WELL THERE IS ONE, JUST FOR 2004-2008 MODELS, WHY DOESN'T THE RECALL INCLUDE 2009 & 2010 ALSO? *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-01
  • VIN: JM1FE1CPXA0
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 MAZDA RX-8. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS WERE REPLACED TWO YEARS AGO. SINCE THEN, THE AIR BAGS HAVE BEGUN TO PUSH OUT OF THE DASHBOARD. HILEY MAZDA OF FORT WORTH (9000 WEST FWY, SUITE B, FORT WORTH, TX 76108, (817) 367-4000) STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL AND THE REPAIR WOULD COST $1,400. THE MANUFACTURER PROVIDED A REFERENCE NUMBER, BUT WOULD NOT ASSIST SINCE THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-14
  • VIN: JM1FE1C44A0
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CLUTCH PEDAL MOUNTING BRACKET SNAPPED AT THE BOLT WHICH RESULTS IN CLUTCH NOT ENGAGING PROPERLY. THE ISSUE RENDERS THE CAR USELESS UNTIL REPAIRED. IT OCCURRED TO ME ON THE HIGHWAY AND I WAS FORCED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY STOP AND HAVE THE CAR TOWED.
2010-12-20

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-06-10
  • VIN: JM1FE1C47A0
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: MY STEPDAUGHTER PLACED HER INFANT/CARSEAT IN THE REAR SEAT OF OUR 2010 MAZDA RX-8. SHE REACHED FOR THE CLOSEST SEATBELT (THAT TURNED OUT TO BE THE FRONT SEATBELT) AND LATCHED THE CAR SEAT IN PLACE. AFTER SHE SAT DOWN IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, SHE REALIZED HER MISTAKE. THREE PEOPLE ATTEMPTED TO PRESS THE BELT RELEASE HOWEVER ALL OF US FAILED. ALSO, THE BELT ROLLED IN AS IT'S DESIGNED TO SO I COULD NOT GATHER ENOUGH SLACK TO TAKE THE INFANT OUT WHILE IN THE CARSEAT. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, WE WERE ABLE TO REMOVE HER INFANT FROM THE CARSEAT, AND THEN I FORCIBLY REMOVED THE CAR SEAT. THE SEATBELT IMMEDIATELY ROLLED BACK AGAIN AS IT'S DESIGNED TO DO SO NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRIED, I COULD NOT GET THE SEAT BELT RELEASED. I TOOK THE MAZDA TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THEY WOULD HAVE TO BREAK THE SEAT BUCKLE IN ORDER TO FREE THE BELT. I WOULD THEN HAVE TO PURCHASE A NEW BUCKLE SINCE IT WAS OPERATOR ERROR RELATED. I COUNTERED BY ASKING WHY THE DESIGN OF THE FRONT AND REAR BUCKLES WERE SO SIMILAR CITING A PROBABLE SAFETY ISSUE. IN FACT, THE INFANTS MOTHER WAS TRAVELING AS A PASSENGER AND ONLY REALIZED THE PROBLEM WHEN SHE REACHED BACK FOR HER PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELT. SHOULD SHE HAVE BEEN THE DRIVER, SHE MAY NOT HAVE REALIZED THE PROBLEM UNTIL IT WAS TOO LATE. THEY DID NOT HAVE AN ANSWER AND REMAINED STEADFAST WITH THEIR DECISION. THEY BROKE THE BUCKLE , AND IT WAS REPLACED. *TR

Negative 2010 Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

  1. Ernesto Windler 2024-10-20

I've been a sports car enthusiast for years, and my all-time favorite was my '75 Alfetta GT with its perfect 50/50 weight distribution. However, this car doesn't quite match up to my memories of it. The only other rotary car I've driven was an old MX2, which was a right-hand drive imported by a service man and traded through a local dealership. It was a real hot rod, unlike this car which doesn't have nearly enough torque. Nonetheless, the features are nice, and I particularly like the variable speed/temp redline and rev-limiters. If you're going to own a sports car, you should drive it hard, but this car doesn't quite have the same level of performance. That being said, I don't regret my purchase at all.

  2. Rudolph Wyman 2024-08-11

I recently purchased a brand new JDM import, but unfortunately, the steering rack has been rattling incessantly despite the car only having 10,000 km on it. While this has been frustrating, I am currently in the process of negotiating with the dealer to have the steering rack switched. On the bright side, the car is fantastic in every other aspect. The engine is great, the handling is superb, the cabin is comfortable, and it looks amazing. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase!

  3. Colin Gorczany 2024-06-29

The car's engine stalls frequently and is prone to flooding if driven for less than 40 minutes, which is not ideal for inner city living where parking spots need to be frequently shuffled. Despite reporting the performance drop off to Mazda, they were unable to find any issues. Unfortunately, a dropped rotor was the final straw and a full engine replacement was necessary. Regrettably, Mazda Australia declined to provide any customer goodwill. While legal action is an option, it is not feasible at this time.

  4. Eugene Anderson 2024-06-04

I recently leased this vehicle for two years and returned it to the dealership as soon as the lease was up. While the gas mileage wasn't great, it was still a good deal considering the thousands of incentives that kicked in. The car is a great option for someone who wants a super handling sport car with 4 doors, but doesn't mind sacrificing a bit on gas mileage and durability of mechanical parts. Leasing this car could be a great idea!

  5. Coleman Lemke 2024-04-13

My experience owning this vehicle has been disappointing due to excessive oil consumption. Despite having the oil changed, the oil light comes on after only 1000 miles, which the dealership has dismissed as normal on multiple occasions. However, this level of oil consumption is unacceptable for a car in this price range.

Positive 2010 Mazda Rx-8 car reviews

  1. Reyes Miller 2025-01-07

This is a true sports car! The sound is 'zoom zoom'! It handles like a dream, with space for four adults and a trunk. The only downside is the gas mileage and the fact that you need high test fuel. But based on the purchase price compared to the rest out there, it's definitely worth it!

  2. Jared Altenwerth 2024-09-14

As a proud owner of three Mazda Rotary vehicles, including a 1988 RX-7 GXL, a 1994 3rd Gen RX-7, and now this latest addition, I can confidently say that I am extremely satisfied with my purchase. Although I had not planned on getting another car, unfortunately, my 15-year-old 3rd gen RX-7 was recently totaled. Despite initial concerns about the '8' not being able to match the 3rd gen's stellar performance due to its heavier weight, lower horsepower, and lack of low-end torque, I was pleasantly surprised by its razor-sharp cornering ability and the smoothness of the rotary. Overall, I am confident in my decision to purchase this vehicle and look forward to many more years of driving enjoyment.

  3. Jamison Predovic 2024-07-13

I bought my RX 8 to replace my Mazda6 that was totaled in an accident. I'm a car enthusiast who was looking for something sporty and fun to drive, and I definitely got both with this car. I opted for the 6-speed to add to the enjoyment of driving a sports car, and I also chose the Crystal White Pearl which I absolutely adore. It's worth noting that this car is basically a two-seater with suicide doors, so don't expect to haul the family around as the back seat has very limited leg room. If you can't afford premium fuel, this car may not be for you as I'm averaging about 16 mpg in the city. Overall, I'm thrilled with my RX 8 and am a true RX 8 lover!

  4. Saige Brown 2024-05-25

What a fantastic car! It's so much fun to drive and we always get compliments on it wherever we go. From the stylish tires and rims to the beautifully designed interior, it's clear that every detail was carefully considered.

  5. Kristoffer Jenkins 2024-05-11

I really enjoy driving my RX8. Although it may not be as powerful as my Speed3, it is definitely more enjoyable to drive. I can take turns and corners in my 8 that I could never do in my Speed3. I have never driven an older model, but the R3 handles so incredibly well that I can't imagine any boring drives in an RX8. One thing is certain, the RX8 is now my car of choice and I am excited to see what other improvements and new models Mazda will release in the future. Based on the final product of the R3, I am confident that Mazda is headed in the right direction. Let's hope they continue on this path.
