2023 Mazda Mazda3 problems

The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was unknown.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-02
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 3MZBPACMXPM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving on the highway and decided to switch int the left lane so I sped up and heard a big bang and what sounded like my bumper being dragged against the ground. I see on my dashboard that there’s an electrical and engine malfunction so I pullover and pop the hood. A bunch of smoke comes out and i see a little fire so me and my friends run and call the police. The police and firefighters arrived just as the fire was getting large and it had engulfed the front right side of my car. If the notification that there was a malfunction didn’t come on, I feel as if we could’ve been hurt much worse or even have died. I’m not much of a person that knows about cars and it sounded like my bumper was scraping and by the amount of times i’ve scraped my bumper, i believed it until I saw my notification. The vehicle is still being inspected for cause of fire and this vehicle has never had this problem before.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-15
- VIN: JM1BPAKM8P1
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: While driving in snow storm I had to pull over and I noticed lights were covered with snow . LED lights will not produce heat to melt snow The lip above and the ledge below traps the snow and with the way the headlights are set up the snow sticks on the lights which affects visibility creating a safety issue. Same thing happens in rain. I have been to a parts store and a mechanic shop Both shops said this is a poor design. The lip and lower ledge trap the snow and LED lights will not melt the snow. This vehicle would be unsafe to drive in a snowstorm because of poor vision. Thank you
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-31
- VIN: JM1BPAMM4P1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: It is the infotainment system but please, hear me out. The manual states that one is able to change channels by using the controls on the steering wheel. That is not the case. It actually is another feature NOT described in the manual. So now in order to change the channel, one must take their hand off the wheel and fidget with a selector and look at a screen (and also hope they are in the right menu section). This is not how most cars with this capability act. This is something that even the manual doesn't describe. This is a hazard, albeit not spontaneous because it leads to distracted driving. I've been to the dealership twice about the issue. I've contacted Mazda corporate. There are anecdotes of others having the same complaint and how this is a hazard. My complaint to Mazda Corporate and the dealership requests to Mazda Corporate have been met with a "Oh well, it is what it is and we can't help you." sort of reply. -The component at this time can be inspected. -The feature leads to distracted driving. -Yes, two local dealerships have observed the issue and were puzzled as to why it says one thing in the manual about the feature and the system acts a different way. -No inspection by the manufacturer, but I have contacted Mazda USA corporate via chat and email. -No warning lamps or messages because apparently this is how it operates.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-18
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM1BPAMM9P1
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Automatic emergency braking suddenly engaged while driving on the highway. The car decelerated abruptly to a complete stop, causing the driver behind to rear-end me. There were no vehicles or obstacles in front of the car when the brakes engaged - the closest car was at least 100 feet in front of me. This collision was clearly the result of a faulty automatic emergency braking system. I do not feel safe driving the car knowing this malfunction could happen again, especially at highway speeds. Sudden unexplained braking presents a huge safety hazard to all drivers, increasing the likelihood for collisions and injuries. There were no warnings or symptoms prior to the unexpected brake system activation. After the brakes activated mistakenly, warning beeps and “BRAKE!” message appeared. Car has collision damage and has not yet been inspected by dealer. Police report filed.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
- VIN: 3MZBPACM9PM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Cars lurches/jerks at low speeds when shifting 1-2 gears and sometimes rpm bounces up and down when downshifting.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-12
- VIN: JM1BPBJY8P1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On three occasions thus far when the vehicle was started and placed in drive the transmission slipped terribly, the engine rpms would race when pressing the accelerator and the vehicle would move at no more than a few MPH. The problem is intermittent but can be inspected. The problem has occurred on public roads when stopped at a light or stop sign and I was unable to move forward again after stopping. The problem was reproduced by the dealer. The dealer had the vehicle for 29 days for repair attempts and returned it to me one day before my states lemon law would have been triggered. There were several vehicle malfunction warnings displayed on the dash 10 to 15 minutes after the vehicle failed to move under its own power. I also purchased an OBDII code reader after the initial vehicle failure and was able to read transmission error codes on subsequent failures.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice with the Mazda3 hatchback. The manual transmission and great handling really make it a joy to drive. The larger spoiler you added from the Turbo model looks really cool, especially in black on black. It's great to have a weekend car to enjoy driving in the country, and it's even better that you find yourself driving it everywhere more often than your other vehicle. While it may be a little small on passenger room, it's perfect for a single person like yourself. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I test drove two different Mazda 3 Premium hatches before buying the second. The first one was the 'soul red' color with black leather interior which was a beautiful paint job. The one that I purchased is 'polymetal gray' and I ended up liking this color better. It looks sort of blue-gray on cloudy days and more gray-gray on sunny days. The interior is red leather which looks much more like an 'ox-blood' color in person than it does in pictures - absolutely gorgeous and has a very premium look and feel. This car drives very well overall and has a sporty feel to it without really being a sports car. The 18' wheels look very nice especially in the gloss black color and I find it's contrast to both the Polymetal and Red colors to be pleasing to the eyes. However, this does translate to some roughness on rougher roads, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I did not initially intend to get such a high trim level, but buying a car with a manual transmission was an important factor to me so I ended up with the premium trim. The MT is VERY smooth in my opinion and took very little time to get adjusted to since I have previous experience with manuals. The clutch is light and easy to push and the shifter is smooth. This is a very forgiving car for someone to learn to drive MT, especially with the hill-hold button. The features and tech in this car are fantastic and way more than I had ever intended to get. I find the heated seats and heads up display to be particularly useful. The infotainment system is a little cumbersome to get used to in regards to using the different menus but after getting the hang of it, it's not so bad. The hand controls for the infotainment are really nice to use once getting accustomed to them and I find the location to be perfect for my hand in its resting place. You can tell that these cars really are designed around the DRIVER as everything is pretty intuitively placed. The backseat may be a little cramped, but since my wife and I do not have kids, it was not a major concern for us. I have not had the chance to load anything massive into the cargo area yet, but I am looking forward to testing out the space with the seats folded down. The appearance of this car is just stellar to me and looks much sleeker and sexier than most small hatchbacks on the road. I do not see many of these updated 3's on the road, especially in hatch form, so it is nice to have a unique vehicle. Before purchasing this car, I was considering the Honda Civic Hatch and the Subaru Impreza Hatch. The Civic looks like a transformer to me (very angular) and the Subaru just didn't appeal to me... kind of dull. Although I would like to say that aesthetics do not matter to me, the appearance of what I was going to spend my money on was pretty important to me. I want to smile and be excited when I look at my vehicle, and this is definitely a much better looking vehicle than my aging 06' Ford Ranger. I bought my new car on January 16th, 2021 at Flow Mazda of Greensboro NC, which was a good experience overall. Although I only have about 600 miles on the car, my first impressions are good, and I am happy that I purchased this car. This is my first Mazda, but it looks like it won't be my last as long as I continue to be happy with this purchase. My wife may end up in a CX-5 when she is ready to upgrade. -Rhyno (happy new Mazda Owner) Update 08/10/2021: The Mazda 3 Premium Hatchback with MT is still a joyous car to drive, and I do not have any complaints about the vehicle. I only have about 4,800 miles on it after 8 months as I am babying it to preserve its glory lol... It is very fun with the MT, takes off and shoots through traffic when I need it to, and runs smooth as butter around town. I am glad I purchased this car and hope that it has much longevity over the course of my ownership. Thanks Mazda, keep up the good work! Update 02/11/2022:I am so glad to hear that you are still enjoying your car after a year of purchase! It's great to hear that you have received countless compliments on its sexy appearance, which definitely makes it stand out on the road. The manual transmission sounds like it's still a lot of fun, and it's great that you're getting better fuel mileage over time. It's wonderful to hear that you're such a fan of Mazda and their cars. I hope they continue to make great cars like this one, and maybe even bring back the

First of all, I want to say that this car is amazing, which is why I'm giving it 5 stars. While there are some negative aspects that I will outline, it's important to note that they weigh much less heavily on the total experience of the car than the positive aspects. In fact, if I outlined all the minor positives like I will the minor negatives, there would be way too many. I just want everyone to know the parts of this car that I wish were better. Let's start with the good: The interior is amazing, and if you've been looking at this car, you already know that. While there are some complaints about the new infotainment center, I like it and agree with Mazda that a touchscreen is definitely not what you want to be messing with (or what you want the other people on the road messing with) while driving. The acceleration and AWD are great, and I really don't have more to say about it. My commute to work is mostly highway/interstate, and on the highway, I average around 35 MPG, surprisingly. Now, to average that, I do use the radar cruise control basically the whole way. You would be surprised to see the difference between gas mileage while using radar cruise vs your foot. Radar cruise is smooth and doesn't repeatedly accelerate too quickly to speed that is too fast and then have to slow down like when you drive with your foot (this cycle can be subtle depending on how you drive but, trust me, everyone does it). The comfort of the car is really great. The seats are very comfortable and have much more adjustability than my previous vehicles. They have 2 memory seating positions, which is nice, especially for people like me that can never get the seat back to that same spot after someone moves it. The ride is smooth, and cabin noise is okay. My Audi A4 I had before was definitely quieter, but it was also more of a cruising car than this car, which is a little more sport-oriented. Don't get in the turbo and expect the luxuries of a vehicle meant for a quiet, smooth (boring) ride. That's not the point of this vehicle.I absolutely love the exterior design of this car! In my opinion, it's amazing, and it's no surprise that it won the 2020 World Car Design of the Year at the WCAs. I have the Soul Red sedan with black wheels and a black lip on the spoiler, and it looks great. The red is probably the best red on the market today and really highlights the curves on the car. The Bose sound system is awesome, and the tech is great too. There are so many driver support and safety features that make you feel comfortable driving, and I especially love the heads-up display. However, there are a few minor issues that I've noticed. For example, the rear torsion beam instead of independent suspension can sometimes cause the car to take a slightly funny bounce when you hit a bump just the right way. Additionally, the parking sensors can be a bit sensitive and beep at you a lot, even when you're in park. Finally, the navigation system doesn't have any real-time data, so it's not very useful if you live somewhere with constant traffic jams and road work. Despite these minor issues, I still think this car is fantastic, and I love that it has wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which makes it easy to use with Google Maps. It's a bit frustrating when a feature doesn't work as well as expected, and you end up using data on Google Maps. While this isn't necessarily a Mazda or Mazda3 issue, it's important to keep in mind that you may still need to use data with the car's maps. The rear seats are a little tight on legroom, but they are still very nice and comfortable seats - more so than other small cars I've been in. Overall, this is a fantastic vehicle. I've always wanted a WRX/STI, Civic Type R, or Focus RS, but I have a lot of driving to do every day, and my taste has changed as I've gotten older. I appreciate not having an extremely stiff ride, sub-par interiors/tech, and I like the more sedate styling because I'm not 18 years old anymore. That being said, this is a great middle ground between still wanting a sports car and wanting a comfortable driver.

I purchased a 2022 Mazda 3 2.5 FWD Sedan in Premium trim in February 2022 for my daily commute. Previously, I had a 2014 Mazda 3 2.5L Grand Touring for the same purpose. The car is well-equipped and looks great for its price point. It handles traffic well and has a decent speed with the 2.5 naturally aspirated engine (I didn't opt for the turbo). The 2.5 engine and reliable 6-speed transmission are a perfect match for most people and provide a satisfying performance experience. The gas mileage is also decent on longer highway runs, better than my 2014 model with the same engine and transmission. Overall, I'm happy with the vehicle and was able to get one instead of a new Civic (which I also considered), as they were either unavailable or had a high markup at dealerships when I was looking. Although the previous body style had a slightly better ride and performance, the new car looks more upscale and the upgrade was worth it. After living with the car for 7 months, there are some minor negatives to consider if you're thinking of buying this car. It's a bit loud inside (typical of Mazda), although it seems a little louder than the previous model to me. I had expected it to be quieter. The ride is a bit rough in my opinion, with lots of road noise coming from expansion joints and road variance, and the wind seems to blow the car around a bit on the road. This could be due to the OEM tires, and changing tires might improve this behavior. Wind noise coming into the cabin can be a bit much during higher wind days, and any cross-winds on the highway cause an odd noise at the top of the driver's side door (seems to flex this area blowing under the seal). From what I read, I did expect noise and ride to be improved over the previous model, but it doesn't seem to be the case. The cup holders in the new iteration are placed too far forward under the climate control-dash overhang and can be difficult to use, especially if the cup is larger. However, the new infotainment system is great overall. I like the simple Mazda interface and find the common knob to be great (I have no issue without a touch screen). Although, I have had some issues with Apple Car Play, such as poor quality transcription of texts and sometimes commands on the screen are unavailable for no reason and cannot be selected. Additionally, the navigation always seems slightly off, resulting in the street sign recognition/speed limit being often incorrectly displayed on the dash and heads-up. For example, on an interstate, the system will often show the frontage road speed limit instead. I have had the system reset/reloaded, but it has not corrected the issue. The front lower fascia seems easier to scuff on curbs than the 2014 model I had, so it is advisable to have some touch-up paint on hand and be cautious when parking. Other than these minor items, the car has been great overall for my intended purpose. All-in-all, the vehicle is great. However, the outgoing model may have actually been slightly better. This could be because I had higher expectations with respect to interior noise with the newer interior (Mazdas except for the CX-9 have always had somewhat higher interior noise to me). I also expected the ride to be slightly improved given they had moved away from performance to increasing luxury. This does not seem to be the case. Before buying, I would recommend driving some of the other cars in this class to be sure and also trying to do a longer highway drive to ensure you are okay with the noise quirks of this car.

I'm really enjoying this car so far! It's loaded with options, including a fantastic Bose stereo, and the interior is absolutely gorgeous with easy-to-use controls. Plus, it's pretty darn quick, which makes driving it a lot of fun. The car is also a real head-turner in soul red metallic, although there is one issue: the paint is a bit delicate. While it looks amazing, it's unfortunately prone to damage from debris and bird mess. Even though I keep the car clean and waxed, I still noticed a mark from a bird dropping after just one day. It's a shame that the paint is causing some issues, especially since the car only has 3000 miles on it. Overall though, I'm still really enjoying it!

We're sorry to hear that you had a disappointing experience with the Mazda 3. It seems like the lack of legroom in both the front and back, as well as the uncomfortable seats, made you feel claustrophobic. It's a shame that they discontinued the Mazda 3, as you would have continued to buy them if they were available. We appreciate your feedback and hope that you have a better experience with your next vehicle.

This car has several areas that require improvement, such as the distracting features, inadequate air conditioning and heater, poor visibility, poor defroster function, and unintuitive electronics. However, with some adjustments, this car has the potential to be a success. It is important to note that these issues do not define the car as a whole, and I would not rate it as a failure.
Jack Pagac 2024-10-16
Performance, interior quality, handling, fuel consumption, and power accessories are all great! However, I noticed that the car has less than 3500kms on it and the oil light is on. Sure enough, the oil level is down by that much. This is not what I would expect for a car that costs 48000 taxes in. Can you please explain this issue?

As an owner of both a 2015s GT and a 2018 Mazda 3 GT hatchback, I have a unique perspective to compare my current 2021 Mazda 3 AWD turbo hatchback to the previous models. Over the past six years, there have been some noticeable changes, most of which are improvements and greatly appreciated. The turbo in the 2021 model is a perfect example of that, giving the car a much-needed boost in performance and driving enjoyment. Although it's not a Mazdaspeed, it still makes a significant difference. However, the switch to a fixed rear axle suspension in the AWD model can be positively brutal on pavement bumps and potholes, compromising the driving experience improvement brought about by the addition of the turbo. Additionally, the reduction in rear cargo space in the AWD model is noticeable and not a welcome change. Despite these issues, I still enjoy my 2021 Mazda 3 hatchback, and it makes for a mostly enjoyable driving experience. I hope this review helps you make an informed decision about your next car purchase!

I was really looking forward to test driving and potentially buying this car. However, after test driving the base model, I was underwhelmed. The engine lacked acceleration and torque, which was disappointing. While the turbo option may be appealing, it comes at a significant price increase. Additionally, the cabin felt quite cramped, especially in the rear where it was difficult to fit a car seat. Even the front seat felt cramped, similar to driving a Miata without the fun. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience.
