The Mazda2 is a subcompact/supermini (B-segment) car manufactured and marketed by Mazda since 2002, currently in its third generation. An entry-level model of the brand in markets outside Japan, the Mazda2 is positioned below the Mazda3. The Mazda2 has also been marketed as the Mazda Demio (a name it kept in the Japanese market until 2019), while its direct predecessor was exported as the Mazda 121.

The second-generation Mazda2 earned the 2008 World Car of the Year title, while the third-generation model was awarded the 2014–2015 Japanese Car of the Year.

The third-generation model was sold in North America as the Scion iA and Toyota Yaris, Yaris iA and Yaris R.

A separate, petrol-hybrid version based on the Toyota Yaris Hybrid has been sold in Europe under the same Mazda2 nameplate since 2022 alongside the petrol-powered third-generation Mazda2.

Common 2011 Mazda Mazda2 problems

The Mazda 2, a supermini car produced by Japanese automaker Mazda, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is with the clutch, where drivers have noticed a clicking noise when pressing down and releasing the clutch pedal.

Another problem reported with the Mazda 2 is with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Drivers have noticed that the DPF becomes clogged up easily, and the DPF warning light illuminates to highlight this. The DPF can become more susceptible to blockage if the car is used for frequent short journeys, meaning the engine isn’t able to reach optimum operating temperatures and unburnt soot becomes deposited in the DPF. The average quote for a DPF clean on the Mazda 2 is £186.77 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

The Mazda 2’s air conditioning system has also been reported to struggle in pumping out cool air when it should be, and as a result, has needed to be repaired by a trained specialist. The fault is generally easily rectified, and it may be that the blower motor within the air conditioning module has failed, or the refrigerant gas has leaked, resulting in poor cooling in the cabin. The average quote for a car air conditioning repair on the Mazda 2 is £94.14 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar.

The Mazda 2 has also been reported to have suspension problems, including issues with the front struts, rear shocks, stable links, and control arms. These problems can cause discomfort during long trips and make the car less practical for some drivers.

Finally, some drivers have reported issues with the car's interior, including poor gas mileage, a small gas tank, and interior noise from the plastic dash. These issues can make the car less comfortable for some drivers, particularly during long trips.

Despite these issues, the Mazda 2 has been praised for its responsive chassis, lively steering, and short, smooth shifts. The car's interior has also been praised for its attractive design and durability, with cloth inserts in the doors adding a touch of style.

In conclusion, while the Mazda 2 has several reported issues, it has also been praised for its performance and interior design. Drivers who are considering purchasing a Mazda 2 should be aware of these common problems and consider whether they are willing to deal with them. As with any car purchase, it is essential to do thorough research and consider all options before making a decision.

The interior quality could use some improvement.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my cars. I had a 2002 Protege5 for nine years, which was the longest I've ever had a car. I really enjoyed it and it still looked good, but I was ready for a change, so I decided to buy the 2011 Mazda 2 hatchback. Unfortunately, it hasn't been the best fit for me. It's a bit too light and skips all over the road, and the trunk and back seat are too small. The fuel economy hasn't been great either, but I'm hoping to trade it in before any major issues arise. Despite these challenges, I've only put 12K miles on it and have taken two round trips, each less than 1000 miles. I'm actually planning another 800 mile round trip in two weeks! I'm a bit disappointed that the 2011 model hasn't lived up to my expectations, especially compared to my trusty 2002 Protege5. Thanks for listening!

My wife and I were in the market for a smaller car with better gas mileage than our 96 Maxima. We considered several options, including the Toyota Yaris, Prius C, Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Mazda 2, Ford Fiesta, and Chevy Sonic. Ultimately, we chose the Mazda 2 because it and the Fit were the only two assembled in Japan, and I value Japanese quality. While we've only had the car for 5 weeks and I'm not thrilled with the dealership, I'm hopeful that things will improve. I did experience some discomfort after a 2-hour drive, but I understand that it's not a car designed for long road trips. Additionally, the gas mileage hasn't quite lived up to the advertised numbers, but I've always gotten better mileage than the window sticker suggests.

I purchased my 2011 Mazda 2 brand new in November 2010 and initially wrote a glowing review about how fun it is to drive. However, I have had some issues with it, especially with the brakes, since hitting 15k miles. The dealer tells me that the brakes are safe and that the squeaking is due to the brake pad composition, but it's still embarrassing when it squeaks at both low and high speeds. Additionally, I had to flush the transmission at 20k miles because the fluid it comes with is cheap junk. Despite these issues, I have decided to trade it in for a Honda Fit this weekend. As a buyer, I have decided to avoid Mazdas in the future. I would recommend considering a car with a better warranty and saving your money for a bigger payment.

Positive 2011 Mazda Mazda2 car reviews

  1. Geo Dare 2025-01-07

I recently purchased this car and I absolutely love its quick and responsive handling! For a 100 hp, this little car can really move. I have to say, I strongly disagree with Edmunds' assessment of this car. I also test drove the Fiesta and was a little disappointed. Although the Fit has more storage, I find its drive less pleasant and its styling less attractive. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

  2. Demario Kertzmann 2024-11-22

I hope this helps! If you're in the market for a high-end sports car, this might not be the one for you. However, with its 5-speed transmission, this car has plenty of power and is a joy to drive. The seats are firm but not uncomfortable, and the car's design makes it handle like a go-kart. It does pick up bumps on the road, but it also holds the road like glue. If you're driving mostly on the highway, you can expect to average around 38 mpg with premium gas (which I recommend for optimal performance). For an extra performance boost, I suggest investing in a K&N air filter - it's a bit pricey, but it's washable and will save you money in the long run. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  3. Weldon Hoppe 2024-11-22

80k mi and they only thing new is 2 front tires and oil. Sure, I would like a little more power, but otherwise, it is exactly what I need - a car that reliably gets me from A to B cheaply. I am surprised by how well it has retained its value. You can barely even find one for sale!

  4. Vincent Cassin 2024-11-11

The Mazda2 is a great little car, especially for city driving. It may be small and light, but that just adds to its charm. While it may not be the smoothest ride on the highway, it still handles well and has decent cargo capacity. The manual transmission is responsive and quick, making it a joy to drive. Plus, I've had no reliability issues and my fuel economy has been above EPA estimates. Although it doesn't come with bluetooth as standard, it does have an aux input jack and a decent stereo. While rear legroom is lacking, it's still about average for the class. Overall, I've had a great experience with this car!

  5. Dan Jacobi 2024-09-24

Congratulations on your new car! It's great to hear that you're enjoying your commute to work. It sounds like you've found a great deal on a used car that meets your needs. Your fuel economy is impressive, and it's good to know that the interior is comfortable. Your planned upgrades sound exciting and I'm sure they will make your driving experience even better. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
