The Mazda2 is a subcompact/supermini (B-segment) car manufactured and marketed by Mazda since 2002, currently in its third generation. An entry-level model of the brand in markets outside Japan, the Mazda2 is positioned below the Mazda3. The Mazda2 has also been marketed as the Mazda Demio (a name it kept in the Japanese market until 2019), while its direct predecessor was exported as the Mazda 121.

The second-generation Mazda2 earned the 2008 World Car of the Year title, while the third-generation model was awarded the 2014–2015 Japanese Car of the Year.

The third-generation model was sold in North America as the Scion iA and Toyota Yaris, Yaris iA and Yaris R.

A separate, petrol-hybrid version based on the Toyota Yaris Hybrid has been sold in Europe under the same Mazda2 nameplate since 2022 alongside the petrol-powered third-generation Mazda2.

Common Mazda Mazda2 problems

The Mazda 2, a supermini car produced by Japanese automaker Mazda, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is with the air conditioning system.

Another common problem with the Mazda 2 is with the clutch.

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) on the Mazda 2 has also been reported to cause problems.

Steering rack failure and premature rotor wear have also been reported as problems in the Mazda 2. The 2012 model has one complaint about steering rack failure, while the 2010 model has one complaint about premature rotor wear.

The DPF warning light appearing on the dashboard of diesel Mazda2s is another common problem. The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is known for getting clogged up if the car is only used for short journeys, around town. The first thing to try is to take the car out onto an open road and drive at 2500rpm or higher for about 10-15 minutes to allow the DPF to get hot enough and burn off the unwanted particles. If the DPF warning light still remains on after doing this, the DPF will need to be manually cleaned to clear the gunk.

In summary, the Mazda 2 has been reported to have several common problems, including issues with the air conditioning system, clutch, diesel particulate filter, steering rack, and premature rotor wear. It is important for Mazda 2 owners to be aware of these issues and to seek professional help if they experience any of these problems.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-05
  • VIN: JM1DE1KY2C0
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: My wife and daughter and I were driving out of the driveway. The driver's seat came completely detached from the frame and I ended up rotated and laying backwards in the driver seat. This is extremely dangerous and could cause serious injury or death. This was a recall for 2010 and 2011 models but this was manufactured in 12/11 so it didn't fall into the recall. This is exactly the issue that was described in the recall.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-29
  • Date Complaint: 2023-11-01
  • VIN: JM1DE1KY3E0
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SEATS
  • Summary: I have taken my car to two separate Mazda dealerships in 2019 and two separate non-dealership mechanics to address the same issue with a vibrating coming from the front driver when driving at lower speeds. It was not a constant noise until recently and saw there was a recall for my vehicle in May 2016. Mazda however says that my VIN does not qualify even though the build date range does show its covered. The problem at first was noted by the Kent Mazda dealership in 2019 but said the vehicle's small framing could cause this. This vibrating has become more clear and causing my vehicle to shake violently when steering. It has made me very fearful as each mechanic I take it to cannot find the source of the issue and overlook it. Mazda Corporate has not been helpful and overlooks the safety as it is something I've brought up to them. The original recall is below: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-15
  • VIN: JM1DE1KY9E0
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Tire size: P 185 / 55 R 15 I believe there is a manufacturing defect with the Firestone Firehawk tires. The tires are prematurely cracking, these tires are supposed to have a 50,000 mile limited warranty. I replaced all four tires on 6/18/2022 and today (7/15/2023) I noticed there was deep cracking through the treads and into the sidewall. I currently have the tires and it is available for inspection upon request. I believe that cracked tires are a safety issue that could put myself and other cars at risk. The Firestone store mentioned the Firehawk tires were discontinued for the car. That cracking was a known issue on these tires and they refused to send the tires in for a warranty replacement. • VIN: JM1DE1KYXE0
  • Components: STEERING,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I bought this 2014 Mazda 2 Sport HB on Thursday January 26, 2023. Upon driving it home, this vehicle with only 41,280 miles on it, shook, vibrating , hearing a very loud popping clicking sounds. Like body metal clanging. It was hard to see. I don’t know if the low beams were set wrong or what but visibility wasn’t good with the low beams at all. I told him that the air conditioner made a horrible loud noises when cranked on high. I asked to take it to a mechanic and I was assured that their mechanics looked it over thoroughly. It has so much wrong with it. I was ripped off. Over $ 13,000 today. The car is in bad shape. It had one wreck I found out. This car looks ok, but it’s the worst car I have ever driven. My short instructed test drive wasn’t long enough to tell everything, but by the time I got home I knew that I was sold a lemon. Perhaps they didn’t know, but come on… This car is junk. It needs junked. This is the truth. I don’t believe it should be on the highway or resold again. Especially not 11,500 that turned into 13,000. I don’t have money for gas to be trying to fix garbage . Why would it have 2 owners and be a 2014 and only have 41,280 miles on it. They saw me coming and I explained that I can’t be ripped off. They didn’t care. I only drove it home and I know it’s really unsafe and not road worthy at all. Very difficult to steer compared to any other vehicle I have ever driven. It scares me truthfully.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-01
  • Date Complaint: 2021-09-10
  • VIN: JM1DE1KY7E0
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The steering was making loud knocking noises at low-speed turns. When looked up Mazda2 issues, found that there was a recall for Steering, Recall no. 16V203000, dated 2016-04-10, states: If the steering knuckle separates from the strut assembly, it can cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash. When the dealership looked up my VIN, it was not a serial number listed under the recall list. However, it had the same issues as the recall. These issues were listed as "requires immediate attention." The Steering rack and pinion, and also the front struts with bearing mounts have all been replaced by the dealership and an alignment was performed. I had to pay for this safety issue out of pocket because my VIN was not listed under the recall list. I would like to report this VIN under the recall list and request a refund for the work performed.

Latest negative Mazda Mazda2 car reviews

  1. Gaston Fritsch 2024-10-19

    Vehicle year: 2013

Firstly, I want to say that the Mazda 2 fulfills its purpose of being an affordable and reliable car that gets me from one place to another. I purchased it mainly for its affordability and reputation as a respected manufacturer. Although the interior has some flaws, such as easily scratched plastics and fabric that tears easily, it still looks good with its black fabric and red piping. However, I did have some issues with the back seat tearing even though I took precautions to prevent it. Additionally, the fuel level indicator is hard to see and the gauges and text on the information system are small and difficult to read. The car is also quite small and lacks space compared to other small cars like the Mini Cooper Coupe and Chevy Sonic. As a 5'7'' driver, I have to adjust the seat all the way back and recline it far back to fit comfortably, which leaves no leg room for passengers in the back. The cup holders are hidden underneath the optional armrest and there is little storage space. The 6 speaker Bose system is decent, but I have heard better. Unfortunately, the windows have trouble defogging. Overall, the Mazda 2 is a good car for its affordability and reliability, but it does have some drawbacks to consider.I have tried every setting on the heat/ac system and unfortunately, the only setting that works is the a/c on, even in the winter in New England. The full blast fan coming out of the defrost setting only is not ideal, but I have had some luck with the Rain Dance defogger. As for the exterior, the chrome peeled off the Mazda 2 logo in the back within weeks of buying the car, but other than that, it has held up pretty well. In terms of mechanics, it has been a reliable vehicle for over 2 years and 50,000 miles. It always starts in the cold New England winters and maintenance has been cheap and infrequent. Balise Mazda in West Springfield, MA has been awesome! However, the brakes have been a major issue. The anti-lock brake feature comes on way too early and I have had multiple issues stopping in it. I found pumping helps, but I brought this up to Mazda service and they can't find anything wrong with them. Today, I nearly hit a Jeep in front of me and it wasn't even in hard braking conditions. The anti-lock braking comes on at random times, which is not acceptable and is the main reason I am trading the car in. I need reliable braking power, especially with the many hills and bad road conditions in Western Massachusetts. In terms of handling, it is easy to drive and handles fine. I even taught my teenage daughter to drive in it. However, it is way underpowered for driving in a hilly or mountainous region. I have given up on certain freeway on-ramps because the car just doesn't have enough power to get up to 65 and merge. If you have to drive on snow at all, make sure to get 4 really good snow tires. I had no control on snow with the stock tires, but I have a little better control with top-of-the-line snow tires. Overall, if you are looking for something cheap, with fair MPG, and from a reliable maker, then the Mazda 2 is a good bet.If you live in a hilly or mountainous area with bad weather, then you might want to consider a vehicle with better handling, heating, power, and control. :)

I have experienced several issues with this car within the first 6 months of ownership, including brake failure after just 2 months and transmission problems at 43,000 miles. As a result, I have incurred a significant financial loss of $4000.00. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this car and suggest considering a Toyota Yaris instead.

This is a fantastic little car if you're looking for excellent gas mileage with minimal maintenance costs. It's a hatchback, so when you fold down the back seats, you can fit quite a bit of stuff in the back. The only downside I've found is its size, as it can be difficult to spot in parking lots behind larger cars. Overall, it's a great car for anyone seeking excellent gas mileage, ample storage space, ease of driving, and comfort. It's the perfect little car!

My wife really likes it. However, I have had a couple of small breakdowns and found that replacement parts for the Mazda two are both expensive and hard to find. For example, a simple tire stud was only available from the dealer, and the same goes for the CV joints/driveshaft, which cost $800 compared to the $60-$120 for other cars.

I've been driving my Mazda 2 for 6 months now and I absolutely love it! Even with 2 child seats in the back, there's still plenty of seating room (as long as it's just kids). The layout is simple and straightforward, which I find very appealing compared to other overly done subcompact cars. I did install an 8

80k mi and they only thing new is 2 front tires and oil. Sure, I would like a little more power, but otherwise, it is exactly what I need - a car that reliably gets me from A to B cheaply. I am surprised by how well it has retained its value. You can barely even find one for sale!

  3. Demario Kertzmann 2024-11-22

I hope this helps! If you're in the market for a high-end sports car, this might not be the one for you. However, with its 5-speed transmission, this car has plenty of power and is a joy to drive. The seats are firm but not uncomfortable, and the car's design makes it handle like a go-kart. It does pick up bumps on the road, but it also holds the road like glue. If you're driving mostly on the highway, you can expect to average around 38 mpg with premium gas (which I recommend for optimal performance). For an extra performance boost, I suggest investing in a K&N air filter - it's a bit pricey, but it's washable and will save you money in the long run. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  4. Rocky Lockman 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2012

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2012 car. It's been two years and I've put 31000 miles on it. I must say, the manual transmission, steering, and handling are all top-notch for a car in this class. Plus, having 4 doors on a subcompact hatchback is a great feature. If you're in the market for an affordable, practical, and fun car, this is definitely the one to consider!

  5. Vincent Cassin 2024-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2011

The Mazda2 is a great little car, especially for city driving. It may be small and light, but that just adds to its charm. While it may not be the smoothest ride on the highway, it still handles well and has decent cargo capacity. The manual transmission is responsive and quick, making it a joy to drive. Plus, I've had no reliability issues and my fuel economy has been above EPA estimates. Although it doesn't come with bluetooth as standard, it does have an aux input jack and a decent stereo. While rear legroom is lacking, it's still about average for the class. Overall, I've had a great experience with this car!
