Maserati Levante problems

The Maserati Levante (Tipo M161) was an executive crossover SUV produced by Italian manufacturer Maserati at the Mirafiori factory in Turin from 2016 to 2024. The Levante went on sale in Europe in May 2016, and in North America in September 2016, remaining on sale into 2024. Production of the Levante ceased by the end of March 2024, commemorated with the release of a top-spec 424BHP special edition.
The Levante was named after a warm, easterly wind that blows in the western Mediterranean Sea, southern France, down to the Strait of Gibraltar. The name of the wind, in turn, comes from the Latin word "levare", which means "to rise". Its design is based on the Kubang concept car that debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.
Announcements
The concept that led to the Levante, the Maserati Kubang, was unveiled in 2011 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The Levante was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on 1 March 2016, followed by a 2016 New York Auto Show. Models for the United States went on sale in April 2016. Early models included Levante (350 PS) and Levante S (430 PS).
Canada models went on sale in September 2016. Early models included Levante (350 PS) and Levante S (430 PS). The Maserati Levante Trofeo was unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. Common Maserati Levante problems
The Maserati Levante has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
Another issue that has affected the Levante is recalls due to design flaws. For example, adjusting the front seats can cause the seat wiring harness to rub, which could result in an electrical short.
Despite these issues, not every owner has experienced problems with their Maserati Levante. Some owners have reported having no issues with their vehicles, while others have emphasized the importance of regular maintenance to ensure the longevity of the car.
It is important to note that the Maserati brand has a reputation for being unreliable, and some surveys and consumer reports have supported this view. Ultimately, whether or not the Maserati Levante is worth buying despite its flaws is a subjective decision that depends on individual preferences and priorities.
What is the engine problem with the Maserati Levante?
Summary: Maserati North America, Inc. (Maserati) is recalling certain 2017 Levante vehicles. The engine software may cause the transmission to shift to neutral, or the engine to shut down, when the vehicle speed is approximately two miles per hour.
Is the Maserati SUV reliable?
According to the U.K.-based ReliabilityIndex, Maserati reliability ratings averaged out at 774.00 for 2019. This high score identifies a vehicle that is relatively expensive to own, especially later in its life–but you'll miss a lot of important details if you only look at the number.
Does Levante have Ferrari engine?
Maserati built a select run of only 103 Levantes and Ghiblis each, dubbed the “V8 Ultima” and “334 Ultima” respectively, based on the top-spec Trofeo trim package fitted with a twin-turbocharged Ferrari V8 engine, as well as additional interior and exterior badging that denotes the celebratory send-off.
How much is maintenance on a Maserati Levante?
Two-Year Levante Maintenance – Starting at $500. Three-Year Levante Maintenance – Starting at $1,080. Four-Year Levante Maintenance – Starting at $1,500.

- Summary: I’ve owned this car since Jan 2021. Throughout this time the car will show the exact problems mentioned in the Maserati Recall 338. The car will shut off while I’m in traffic, or if I’m slowly going through a yield sign the car will unexpectedly shift into neutral. I’ve tried talking to my local Maserati dealer over the years and all they keep saying is no, you have no open recalls. My car is doing exactly what the recall was for. All I want is a remedy. I’m getting nowhere, they want to charge me $300 to do diagnostics. My car was manufactured 9/2016 which is of the same time of the recalled vehicles. “ Maserati S.p.A. and MNA have determined that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in model year 2017 Maserati Levante S vehicles and Levante vehicles. Maserati S.p.A. and MNA have determined that the above described vehicles were manufactured with an engine software issue. Specifically, if the vehicle is being operated at speeds of approximately 2 miles per hour (low engine RPM), which can be encountered during heavy stop and go (bumper to bumper) traffic conditions, the transmission may shift into neutral or possibly have an engine shut down condition, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.” This quote is from your own website, yet I can’t get any remedies from Maserati. This needs to be known that all affected cars were not recalled. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE IVE OWNED THE CAR. IT STILL HAPPENS TODAY. I’ve nearly been Tboned in traffic because my car switched to neutral. Help. I feel like this is falling on deaf ears. Several of these cars are now coming up for sale on the used car market and people need to know that these cars are dangerous.

I at first thought I was hit by another car but upon further research I discovered I was not hit. When we purchased the car we were told there were no prior accidents or repairs. The accident revealed various parts of the car to have bondo proving prior repairs were done. We were deceived into buying this car. If we were not lied to and were told the truth about prior repairs we would’nt of bought the car. The car is completely totaled now. This is FRAUD

- Summary: While driving at low speeds, under 5mph, the car will shift itself into neutral. This happens while slowing, coasting, or slow accelerations. This has caused an immediate safety issue as you lose control of the car, especially when the shift into neutral is a hard shift. This hard shift will cause you to loose traction on wet, icy, or snowy surfaces. Although this is a known issue for this model and year, the vin for my specific vehicle shows of no recalls yet the problem persists. I am listing a date of yesterday as this is the most recent occurrence, though I have experienced it for the 2 years that I have owned the vehicle and it has been reported to the used dealership that I purchased it from. There is no longer a Maserati dealer or service center in Alaska. I have been in touch with other owners here in Alaska that have experienced the same issue.

- Summary: on or around 12 october, my levante 2017 with 85 k mileage, started showing check engine light. i called the dealership the next day. the car stalled on the highway 3-5 times before i got to the dealership. i was told that the engine is dead and the car is NOT drivable anymore. This is a safety issue. stalling on a major highway can be dangerous. There are 3-4 other cases (online searching) whose same levante 2017 model had the same issue at very low mileages. The engine on that model is faulty and maserati of north america should be held accountable and recall so that it does not become a serious issues with other drivers still on the road. I now have to pay 38k to replace the engine being ordered from Italy. Maserati of north América will not help me with this. They should recall this model to check the defect in their twin turbo engine.

- Summary: I have owned this car for over 2 years now. It has been plagued with issues with the Stop/Start feature on the car. When I’m in heavy or slow traffic the car will shut off and may not restart like it’s supposed to. It will sometimes shift into neutral or park and I will have to scramble to press the engine start button then shift the car back into drive. This will also happen whenever I’m approaching a yield sign where I may not be making a complete stop. I will be slowing down and the car will go into the stop/start and shut off and may not restart and may not be in drive when I’m basically rolling out into traffic. The Maserati website says that my vehicle was recalled for an issue that it seems like I’m consistently having however Maserati website for checking vin recalls days that my car has been repaired. I’ve complained to the dealer when I took the car in for service and all I get from them is “ Turn the stop/start feature off every time you drive the car”. This is a hassle because I have to scroll to menu #6 to do so. If I’m in a hurry, I may forget. I’m so scared my car is going to kill me. We have had several close calls especially in the yield situations. I feel like something needs to be done. There are other Levante owners in my year that are having the same issue. Maserati has not fixed this problem. It is still happening today. I’m including a picture off of social media that was posted today. I’m not alone here. Please help.

- Summary: Was driving 65 in a 65 mph zone. Lightly drizzling. Felt something happen to passenger front tire or suspension. Car spun out of control, rolled and crashed into rocks in NM. Was recently taking my 2019 Maserati Levante in for service and front lower arms were broken. I am at about the same mileage with the 2019 (35k vs 40k on the 2018). Could this same issue be the culprit or was I supposed to receive a recall notice about faulty welding that I see has happened in other 2018 Levantes?

- Date Of Incident: 2021-02-05
- Date Complaint: 2021-07-09
- VIN: ZN661XUA4HX
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I purchased the car in January of 2021 and within 3 weeks, the car began to shut-off while I was driving. This happened regardless of the speed traveled. For example, I was slowing down to park and the car shut-off, I was approaching the highway, and less than 100 feet from the highway entrance, the car shut down. The battery was checked and the it was not the battery so the car was towed to the dealership. Although the car was, "Certified", this major life threatening issue was overlooked. When I had the car towed to the dealership, the car was under repair for 49 days. The problem was defined as a fuel pump delivery error and the entire fuel pump assembly was replaced. This is a problem that could have ended in death had the car shut down on the freeway. I also wonder, how are the additional dealer, "Certifications" is monitored? It cost about $2500.00/year for the additional dealer certification which I paid. My question is how could such a life threatening issue be overlooked on a car that was certified?

- Summary: When driving and approaching a stop at under 20 miles per hour, the brakes will fail and reverberate making a recoiling sound if I hit a bump or small pothole in the road. At that time, I loose control of the car because all braking systems fail. The car will continue to roll out of my control. There are no warning lights and the emergency brake also fails at this time. It is through the grace of God that I do not run into a person, auto or property. Again, this is a, "Certified" vehicle which I paid an extra $2,500/year to assure the vehicle would be safe and all additional issues would have been resolved. I have scheduled an appointment and will have the car repaired. Please follow up. Please note this is the 2nd major life threatening incident with this vehicle in the past 6 months and during the first 1,000 miles on a car that I paid an additional $2500.00 to assure that it was certified and had gone through the necessary inspections so that these issues would have been resolved prior to the release of the car from the dealership for my new purchase.

Congratulations on owning your Levante for 2 months now! It's great to hear that you really love it and that you get compliments all the time about its looks. While it may have taken you a while to get used to some of the quirky design features, like the lack of controls for the phone or stereo on the steering wheel, it sounds like you've found a lot to appreciate. The comfortable seats in front and back, great riding and steering, good cargo space, gorgeous looks inside and out, and of course that sexy growl of the engine are all high marks. It's understandable that outward visibility can be kind of restricted and fuel economy isn't the best, but overall it sounds like you're extremely pleased with your Levante. Thank you for sharing your experience and comparison with your previous Range Rover Sport, it's always helpful to hear from someone who has owned both. Enjoy your drives in your Levante!

After owning BMW X5’s, Porsche Cayenne S and Macan Turbo, I have to say that the Levante is definitely more luxurious, but it does drive much heavier and feels like a bigger SUV. While the engine sound is great, it sounds better than it performs, although it still performs very well. Unfortunately, it is priced too high compared to its competition, and its resale value and gas mileage are poor. However, dealers are offering huge discounts which tells you something. Having said that, I think it is a great combination of sportiness and luxury, and its styling really stands out. It's worth noting that no service is required over the first 4 months.

My wife and I recently decided to switch from a Maserati Levante to a new BMW X5. Although we took a loss on the trade-in, we are much happier with our new car. We found that the controls on the Levante were difficult to use and not very intuitive. For example, the stick behind the steering wheel that controls the wipers was hard to see and reach, and the button on the steering wheel only scanned through radio stations instead of switching between presets. Additionally, the engine turning off when stopped at a light was a nuisance, but we were able to turn off that function after clicking through a few menus. The seats were also relatively narrow and tight, which may not be comfortable for taller individuals. Despite these issues, we did appreciate the heated seats, although it was a bit inconvenient to turn them on and off through the touch screen. Overall, we are much happier with our new BMW X5 and would highly recommend it.The turning radius of the Levante was not good, which made it difficult to turn into parking spaces without backing up. We recently got the new X5 and noticed a significant difference in steering between the two cars. Additionally, during the first snowfall in Chicago in December, we found that the X5 handled far better than the Levante, which tended to slide. Unfortunately, we were not satisfied with the Levante despite its cool appearance and valet appeal. We ended up taking a $20k hit to get out of our lease and avoid driving it for another 3 years. We spent around $80k on the Levante, but the X5 has none of the deficiencies we experienced with the Levante. This experience has made me reconsider my plans to replace my BMW 650ix convertible with a Maserati Gran Turismo next year.

The paint on my car looked beautiful at first, but unfortunately, after driving it for only 5 months and 5,066 miles, I noticed over 30 chips in the paint. Additionally, I have experienced some issues with the stereo, front tires rubbing, and a rattling noise at 20 miles an hour. Despite these issues, the car has good acceleration once it gets going. However, at 70 miles an hour, I can feel the road through the steering wheel and gas pedal. The brakes squeak, but they do stop the car quickly. Although I have been told that I am the only person experiencing these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved. I was even presented with a solution to trade it in for a better Maserati, but unfortunately, I would lose $20,000 in the process. Overall, I would recommend this car with caution and suggest doing thorough research before making a purchase.

I have experienced several issues with my Maserati SUV within the first two years of ownership, including a malfunctioning air suspension system that required a full replacement and squeaky brakes. Despite being a repeat Maserati customer, I am disappointed with the quality of this vehicle and the lack of support from Maserati service. As a luxury car with a high price tag, these issues are unacceptable. I have attempted to address the brake issue with my sales representative, but have not received a response.

Avoid purchasing this car. Despite only driving it for less than two weeks, the engine light has already turned on. This car has proven to be a poor investment.
