1996 Mitsubishi 3000gt problems
The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front-engine, all-wheel/front-wheel drive grand touring/sports car manufactured and marketed by Mitsubishi from 1990 until 2000 over three different generations. Manufactured in a three-door hatchback coupé body style in Nagoya, Japan, the 2+2 four-seaters were marketed in the Japanese domestic market (JDM) as the GTO, and globally as 3000GT. In North America, it was sold both as the Mitsubishi 3000GT (1991–1999) and the Dodge Stealth (1991–1996), a badge engineered, mechanically identical captive import. As a collaborative effort between Chrysler and Mitsubishi Motors, Chrysler was responsible for the Stealth's exterior styling.
The car was based on Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante and retained their transverse mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive layout. The GTO's engines were naturally aspirated or with twin-turbochargers and were also available with active aerodynamics (automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel-steering, full-time all-wheel-drive and adaptive suspension.
Mitsubishi marketed a retractable hardtop variant, which were engineered and converted from coupé models in California by ASC, and sold as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder for model years 1993–1995. These were the first fully automated retractable hardtop marketed since the 1959 Ford Skyliner.
The JDM model took its name from the Galant GTO, a two-door hardtop coupé marketed by the company in the early 1970s, which in turn took its name from the Ferrari 250 GTO, short for Gran Turismo Omologata – "Omologata" signifying that it met motorsport homologation requirements.

Common 1996 Mitsubishi 3000gt problems
The Mitsubishi 3000GT, sold as the GTO in Japan and Dodge Stealth in the US, is a well-built car that offers excellent long-distance touring capabilities, great high-speed stability, and grip. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.
- Electrical Faults: The 3000GT's engine and gearbox ECUs, which control the complex systems, are known to fail. These components are replaceable at a cost, but their location in difficult-to-reach areas increases labor costs. Regular maintenance and checking the maintenance records can help avoid this issue.
- Suspension Issues: Suspension bushes wear out regularly, leading to rattling and knocking noises. Struts can also suffer from wear, so it's essential to check the suspension thoroughly when buying a 3000GT.
- Manual Transmission Problems: Notchiness in standard operation is normal for the manual gearboxes, which were standard on all UK cars. However, transfer cases and output shafts can fail, making it crucial to have the transmission checked out by a specialist.
- Automatic Transmission Issues: Automatic boxes tend to be even more problematic and are equipped on some grey imports. Regular fluid changes and maintenance can help avoid these issues.
- Turbocharger and Intercooler Hoses: The hoses for the turbocharger and intercooler are known to pop off, especially if a car has been chipped to increase boost pressure. Checking the retaining clips and looking for signs of tampering can help avoid this issue.
- Engine Internals: Engine internals are generally reliable in standard form. However, con-rods and valves can suffer if the boost is upped too much. Modified components can have detrimental effects on reliability, so it's essential to check any modified car thoroughly.
- Active Aerodynamic Systems: Active aerodynamic systems on early cars do inevitably stop working. They are repairable but few owners have gone to the trouble of doing so.
In summary, the Mitsubishi 3000GT is a well-built car that can provide years of pleasurable motoring if maintained well. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and check the car thoroughly before purchasing. Regular maintenance and checking the maintenance records can help avoid many of these issues.
Does the Mitsubishi 3000GT a reliable car?
While there are a number of potential issues to watch out for, the 3000GT is a well-built car and if maintained well can provide years of pleasurable motoring.
Why did Mitsubishi stop making 3000GT?
1999 was the final year the 3000GT was available in the U.S. market. With sales slowing to a trickle and new side impact regulations looming, production for the Japanese domestic market finally ceased in 2000.
How long do Mitsubishi 3000gts last?
Yep, it'll last as long as you take care of it. I know of a few above 300k. 1997 3000GT VR4 - 17 years of ownership - TD05-16G E85 600whp - Daily Driver 😈 - Broken Again! definatly 250k+ miles if you take care of it.
Is the 3000GT a rare car?
While the 1999 3000GT VR-4 is the rarest of the bunch, with just 287 being sold in the US market before Mitsubishi discontinued the 3000GT, a 1998 model with so few miles on the odometer is likely even rarer.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-08-26
- VIN: JA3AN74K8TY
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I OWN A 1996 MITSUBISHI 3000GT VR-4 WITH A 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. MY FRIEND, BRIAN WATSON AND I WERE TRAVELING EASTBOUND ON HIGHWAY 20, JUST ABOUT 50 MILES EAST OF BEND, OR. I MADE AN ATTEMPT TO SHIFT FROM 5TH TO 6TH GEAR, BUT BECAUSE OF SOME PROBLEMS WITH WHAT I NOW UNDERSTAND TO BE THE SYCROS, IT WENT INTO 4TH GEAR. NOT NOTICING IT WAS IN 4TH GEAR BECAUSE I HAD SHIFTED IT INTO THE POSITION OF 6TH, I LET OUT THE CLUTCH AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR. SHORTLY AFTER, I HEARD THIS POP. I LOOKED DOWN AND NOTICED THE RPM'S WERE PAST THE RED LINE, THIS IS WHEN I FIGURED OUT THAT THE CAR WAS IN 4TH GEAR. I SHIFTED IT BACK INTO 5TH GEAR AND BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN, CONCERNED ABOUT THE POP SOUND I HAD HEARD. I ASKED BRIAN, IF HE HAD HEARD IT AND HE TOLD ME NO. I ASKED HIM IF HE WAS SURE HE DIDN'T HEAR IT, HE TOLD ME NO, SO I KEPT DRIVING. SHORTLY AFTER, I STARTED HEARING CLANKING SOUNDS COMING FROM WHAT SOUNDED LIKE THE TRANSMISSION. THE ENGINE STOPPED, THE VEHICLE STARTED SLOWING DOWN RAPIDLY. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER OFF THE PAVEMENT ONTO THE GRAVEL ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR. I'M WORRIED THAT MY CAR IS ABOUT TO CATCH ON FIRE. I BEGAN POURING THE WATER ONTO THE TRANSMISSION, WHICH WAS BOILING THE WATER AT THIS POINT, BUT IT SEEMED TO BE ENOUGH TO STOP THE ENGINE AREA FROM SMOKING. LATER I FOUND OUT THAT THE TRANSAXLE WAS BAD AND THAT IT COSTS $4414.29 NEW, PLUS $696.00 FOR LABOR. I ASKED IF THEY COULD GET THE TRANSAXLE REPLACED CONSIDERING THE DRIVE TRAIN HAS A 60,000-MILE WARRANTY ON IT AND MY MILEAGE IS ONLY 66,000-MILES. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP SAID NO AND SO DID THE PERSON THAT MADE THE DECISION AFTER I CALLED MITSUBISHI. SO I AM WRITING IN HOPES THAT YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO ASSIST ME IN THIS MATTER. THE TRANSAXLE SHOULD NOT HAVE SHIFTED INTO THE WRONG GEAR, IT ALSO SHOULD HAVE NOT EXPLODED BECAUSE IT WAS IN ABOVE RED LINE.*JB

I DID AND THE CAR RAN FINE FOR THE FIRST 15K MILES THEN THE SHIFTING BECAME NOTCHY AND THAT'S WHEN MY TRANSFER CASE GAVE UP AND I BOUGHT A NEW ONE AND INSTALLED IT MYSELF. 877 of these cars were produced. The automatic hardtop was not available since the 1960s' Ford Skyliner. The car features 17-inch tall, 8.5-inch wide chrome wheels and high-performance tires, which are mated with an automatic/adjustable electronically controlled suspension (ECS). Additionally, all-wheel drive (AWD) and all-wheel steering (AWS) only add to the already impressive handling, despite the less-stiff structural design of a convertible. The cockpit is completed with computerized climate control. Although you can definitely feel the road, the driving experience is great. However, imperfections in the road sometimes cause the car to pull slightly.

This sports car is an absolute steal for the price! It's a 1997 SL model that turns more heads than any Vette or Mustang out there. I've owned one Vette and two Cobras, but this car's acceleration is something else. It's even better on the highway. The SL is much lighter than the VR-4, and with 218hp, it really goes. I topped out at 158mph! If you're looking to turn heads and feel great, this is definitely the car for you.
-
I also own a 97 Mitsu VR-4, so I'm quite familiar with the platform. However, when I purchased a 95 Spyder a year ago, I was blown away! The retractable top is mesmerizing, and the styling is simply over the top. I've even noticed Porsche, Ferrari, and BMW drivers turning their heads to take a look at this beauty. People still ask me if it's a new car! Although the retail value of these cars has declined over the years, I believe that they will eventually rise in value since there are so few vehicles out there.
-
I've had this vehicle for 4 years and 75,000 miles and I'm already thinking about keeping it even after I buy my next one. It's definitely a keeper!
-
They stopped making this car - too bad! It had high performance, luxury, and sexy styling in a two-door coupe. Today, performance cars are either 4-door sedans, tiny roadsters, or underpowered coupes like the Monte Carlo. Also, it was very reliable. What's wrong with today's consumer? In my youth, 4-door cars were for 'dorks'.

I completely agree with most of what has been posted regarding the reliability and handling. However, I have noticed that the pick-up kind of lags a bit. Surprisingly, I don't enjoy driving it as much as I thought I would. I prefer to drive my 4Runner! As someone who is 6' tall, I feel too tall for this car. It's hard to get in and out of, the roof is too low, and the visibility isn't great - especially when the dash is shiny and reflects into the windshield. Additionally, many of the interior plastic bits have broken, which is quite disappointing. Overall, I think the exterior looks pretty sharp though!
