2005 Ford Cvpi problems
The Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (colloquially referred to as the CVPI, P71, or P7B) is a four-door, body-on-frame sedan that was manufactured by Ford from 1992 to 2011. It is the police car version of the Ford Crown Victoria and was the first vehicle to use the Ford Police Interceptor name.
From 1997 to 2013, the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor was the most widely used automobile in law enforcement fleets in North America, namely the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was also used for this purpose on a more limited scale in other regions, such as Europe and the Middle East.
History
After the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Caprice, the Ford Motor Company held a near-monopoly on the market for police vehicles in the United States and Canada for over a decade. The conventional rear-wheel drive, V8 power, and body-on-frame construction were considered advantageous for police use. The body-on-frame construction allowed inexpensive repairs after collisions without the need to straighten the chassis. Rear-wheel drive was deemed better for hard maneuvers and more robust than the front-wheel-drive competition for rough driving over curbs and other obstacles in the urban environment.
Although CVPIs were not sold directly to the general public by the manufacturer, they were widely available in North America as used vehicles after being decommissioned. The cars were in demand by taxi companies and others who wanted a safe, durable, and/or inexpensive car, and those who needed a car with a large back seat.
The CVPI came equipped with many heavy-duty parts, such as a revised transmission, and a 186 kW (253 PS; 249 hp) engine. Used versions are normally stripped of any police decals, equipment, police radios, and emergency lights before being sold or auctioned to the public.

Common 2005 Ford Cvpi problems
The 2005 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI) is a reliable vehicle, but like any car, it can have issues. One common problem is transmission failure, as reported by a CVN forum user. The user's 2005 CVPI exhibited signs of transmission failure, such as falling out of gear around corners and abrupt stops. Upon inspection, the transmission was found to be heavily overfilled, with an excess of two inches past the full when hot line. After draining the excess fluid and adding Lucas transmission additive, the problem worsened, making normal shifts impossible. The user sought help from local transmission shops, which quoted prices between $2,000 and $3,000 for repairs, a cost higher than the vehicle's purchase price. The user also checked local junkyards for compatible transmissions but found none.
Another issue reported by CVN forum users is the failure of the intake manifold, which can cause a ticking noise when the engine is cold and a smell of exhaust fumes. The original intake manifold on the Crown Vic, including the crossover tube, was made of plastic, which caused exhaust leaks. The intake manifold was upgraded with an aluminum crossover tube, but if the intake manifold is leaking, it needs to be replaced. If a coolant leak is noticed at the back of the engine, it is likely that coolant has deteriorated part of the manifold’s gasket and is now leaking.
Additionally, the heater mode switch may not function properly, and there may be no audible vacuum noise from the vents when the switch is turned. This issue can be caused by disconnected or faulty vacuum hoses. Check for any disconnected vacuum lines and replace any broken hoses.
Lastly, the MAF sensor can be faulty, causing ticking noises and acceleration problems. The PCV system can also not function properly and clog, leading to high RPMs at idle and erratic running engine.
To address these issues, it is essential to perform regular maintenance and address problems as soon as they arise. Using the correct type of fluid, such as Mercon V for the 2005 CVPI, is crucial to prevent transmission failure. Replacing faulty parts, such as the intake manifold, vacuum hoses, and MAF sensor, can also help prevent further damage and costly repairs.
