The Lexus LS (Japanese: レクサス・LS, Hepburn: Rekusasu LS) is a full-size luxury sedan (F-segment in Europe) serving as the flagship model of Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota. For the first four generations, all LS models featured V8 engines and were predominantly rear-wheel-drive. In the fourth generation, Lexus offered all-wheel-drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase variants. The fifth generation changed to using a V6 engine with no V8 option, and only one length was offered.

As the first model developed by Lexus, the LS 400 debuted in January 1989 with the second generation debuting in November 1994. The LS 430 debuted in January 2000 and the LS 460/LS 460 L series in 2006. A domestic-market version of the LS 400 and LS 430, badged as Toyota Celsior (Japanese: トヨタ・セルシオ, Hepburn: Toyota Serushio), was sold in Japan until the Lexus marque was introduced there in 2006. In 2006 (for the 2007 model year), the fourth generation LS 460 debuted the first production eight-speed automatic transmission and an automatic parking system. In 2007, V8 hybrid powertrains were introduced on the LS 600h/LS 600h L sedans.

Development of the LS began in 1983 as the F1 project, the code name for a secret flagship sedan. At the time, Toyota's two existing flagship models were the Crown and Century models – both of which catered exclusively for the Japanese market and had little global appeal that could compete with international luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. The resulting sedan followed an extended five-year design process at a cost of over US$1 billion, and premiered with a new V8 engine and numerous luxury features. The Lexus LS was intended from its inception for export markets, and the Lexus division was formed to market and service the vehicle internationally. The original LS 400 debuted to strong sales, and was largely responsible for the successful launch of the Lexus marque.

Since the start of production, each generation of the Lexus LS has been manufactured in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" stands for "Luxury Sedan", although some Lexus importers have preferred to define it as "Luxury Saloon". The name "Celsior" is taken from Latin word "celsus", meaning "lofty" or "elevated".

Common 2005 Lexus Ls430 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2005 Lexus LS430, several common problems have been reported:

  • Airbag Assembly Problems: Lexus issued a recall for LS430 models made in 2004, 2005, and 2006 due to airbag assembly issues. The inflators used in the curtain, side, and knee airbags did not have sufficient heating agents to deploy properly in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants. Lexus offered to replace faulty SRS airbags for free, and owners are advised to monitor the airbag system for any issues like blinking lights, drained batteries, or corroded modules.
  • Acceleration Concerns: Some owners reported erratic, sudden, or delayed acceleration when pressing the gas pedal. This issue could be linked to a bad throttle body, causing surging or stalling due to carbon and dirt buildup on the butterfly valve. Cleaning the throttle body may resolve the problem, but replacement might be necessary if cleaning doesn't work .
  • Electrical and Speaker Problems: It's essential to ensure that all electronic components, including LEDs in the tails and speakers, are functioning properly. Blown speakers are a common issue in the LS430. Additionally, checking for proper timing belt service and ensuring the car comes with 2 master keys is recommended to avoid potential electrical and key-related problems.
  • Battery and Electronic System Concerns: Some owners have faced dead battery syndrome, with possible causes including issues with the combo controller. It's crucial to have a mechanic with extensive Lexus experience inspect the car thoroughly, checking for oil leaks, altered parts, and ensuring all electronic systems are in working order to prevent unexpected repair costs.

By addressing these common problems with the 2005 Lexus LS430 based on owner complaints, potential buyers can make informed decisions and be prepared for maintenance and repairs associated with this model.

What years to avoid Lexus LS430?

Lexus has issued a recall for LS430 cars manufactured in 2004, 2005, and 2006 due to air bag assembly problems. According to the recall, the inflators used in the curtain, side, and knee air bags didn't have sufficient heating agents to properly deploy the air bags in the event of a crash.

Is Lexus LS430 reliable?

I love cars and have owned many, and always research other models, mainly higher end luxury/performance vehicles, but none can compare to the reliability and overall value of the LS430. Change your oil and other standard maintenance and it will last you a lifetime! Yes, I would recommend this car.

Which year LS 430 is best?

The Lexus LS 430, produced from 2001 to 2006, is renowned for its luxury, comfort, and reliability. While the "best" year can vary based on individual preferences and priorities, many experts and Lexus enthusiasts consider the 2004 model year as one of the standout years for the LS 430.

How many miles will a Lexus LS430 last?

This thing could easily go 500,000 miles. It is a joy to drive and I plan on owning mine for another 20 years. I have an LS 460 that is just as fantastic, but I'm still drawn to this car. You honestly cannot compare this to any other vehicle on the road.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-21
  • VIN: JTHBN36F050
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE CAR IS EQUIPPED WITH THE AUTOMATIC DOOR CLOSING SYSTEM, WHICH MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSING REAR SIDE PASSENGER DOOR TO BE INCAPABLE OF SECURELY BEING CLOSED. WHEN THE DOORS ARE SOFTLY PARTIALLY SHUT, THIS SYSTEM GRABS THE DOOR AND FINISHES COMPLETELY SHUTTING THE DOOR FLUSH TO THE OUTER BODY OF THE CAR. WHEN THE SYSTEM FAILS, THE DOOR CANNOT BE SHUT EVEN MANUALLY. IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN WHILE ON A TRIP, THE DOOR WOULD FLOP OPEN AND CLOSED AND BE A SERIOUS HAZARD AND DANGER TO PASSENGERS, OTHER TRAFFIC AND THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE DOOR MIGHT COME COMPLETELY OFF THE BODY OF THE CAR. FORTUNATELY, IN MY INCIDENT, I WAS IN TOWN AND GOT TO A STORE TO PURCHASE ROPE TO TIE THE DOOR CLOSED BY STRAPPING IT TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE REAR DOOR AND TAKING IT TO THE DEALER FOR VERY COSTLY REPAIR.

I APPLIED BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES TO NO AVAIL. I TOLD MY PASSENGERS THAT I COULD NOT STOP AND APPLIED BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES AGAIN. BRAKES DID NOT GO TO FLOOR. IT FELT AS THOUGH CRUISE CONTROL WAS ON - IT WASN'T. I AVOIDED A FEW CARS BY STEERING TO CURB AND SIDEWALK. I OBSERVED A LIGHT POST ON SIDEWALK AND HAD TO TURN INTO TRAFFIC HITTING TWO CARS. LIGHTS ON LOW BEAM DROPPED TO ABOUT 20' IN FRONT OF CAR LEAVING ME VIRTUALLY BLIND AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE AT ANYTHING OVER 20 MPH. BECAUSE OF THE WINDING NATURE OF THE ROADS AND CUSTOMARY SPEED, I WAS AT SERIOUS RISK OF BEING REAR-ENDED. IN ORDER TO GET HOME, I HAD TO DRIVE ON HIGH BEAM CAUSING MUCH CONSTERNATION WITH ON COMING TRAFFIC. IF YOU CHECK THE U-TUBE VIDEO ON THIS SUBJECT, YOU WILL FIND OVER 14,000 VIEWS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE LEXUS PRODUCT LINE. *TR

  • Summary: ON 10/17/09 AT ABOUT 5:40 PM, AFTER DRINKING A VODKA WITH ICE, MY HUSBAND AND I WENT TO DINNER IN OUR 2005 LS430 LEXUS. WE INTENDED TO GO TO DINNER A RELATIVELY SHORT DISTANCE AWAY. I TURNED ON MILITARY TRAIL, PROCEEDED TO THE LEFT LANE TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND TOWARDS NORTHLAKE BLVD, PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA. AS I APPROACHED A TRAFFIC LIGHT MY LEXUS UNEXPECTEDLY SPED UP. I TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKE. THERE WERE CARS STOPPED IN FRONT OF ME AT THE RED LIGHT. DESPITE MY EFFORTS MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I TOOK EVASIVE MANEUVERS TO AVOID THE STOPPED VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. THE LEFT TIRES OF MY LEXUS WENT UP ON THE CENTER MEDIAN AND MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. I MISSED THE VEHICLES STOPPED AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND TRAVELING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. MY CAR WOULD NOT STOP ACCELERATING. I STRUCK A CORVETTE STOPPED IN THE LEFT NORTHBOUND LANE OF MILITARY TRAIL. AFTER STRIKING THE CORVETTE, I CONTINUED THROUGH THE SOUTHBOUND LANES UNTIL I INTENTIONALLY DROVE MY CAR INTO A FIRE HYDRANT IN ORDER TO STOP AND AVOID STRIKING GAS PUMPS AT A SHELL STATION. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE INJURED IN THIS CRASH. THE DRIVER OF THE CORVETTE PASSED AWAY. MY LEXUS IS STILL IN POLICE CUSTODY. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE AT THIS TIME. I WAS CHARGED WITH DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE (MANSLAUGHTER), AND 3 OTHER CHARGES. I AM VIGOROUSLY FIGHTING THOSE CHARGES AS I WAS NOT IMPAIRED AND, AS EVIDENCED BY MY EVASIVE MANEUVERS, HAD CONTROL OF MY CAR. BUT FOR THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION, THIS ACCIDENT AND DEATH WOULD HAVE NOT OCCURRED. IN NOV. 2008, MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING THE SAME LEXUS AND AS HE PULLED INTO OUR GARAGE THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP AND HIT CABINETS IN OUR GARAGE. LOOKING BACK AND COMPARING WHAT HAPPENED IN MY ACCIDENT ON 10/17/09 IT IS CLEAR THAT MY HUSBANDS EARLIER ACCIDENT WAS THE RESULT OF SOME SORT OF MALFUNCTION OF OUR LEXUS ACCELERATOR SYSTEM. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE AT THAT TIME.UPDATED 04/22/10*BFUPDATED 07/07/10.*JB*CW

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • VIN: JTHBN36F155

  • Summary: TWO MONTHS AGO I HAD A SUDDEN ACCELERATION EVENT IN MY LEXUS LS430, 2005. I WAS INA MUSEUM PARKING GARAGE, MY WIFE GOT OUT, I NEEDED TO REPOSITION TO NOT BE 'ON THE LINE'. I BACKED UP, PRESSED THE GAS VERY LIGHTLY AND THE CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND WAS ABLE TO HALT IT ONE-TWO INCHES FROM THE WALL. INITIALLY, I BLAMED MYSELF BUT THEN THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN MY FLOOR MAT AND REMOVED IT. MY WIFE REMAINS TERRIFIED TO THIS DAY. IN ANALYZING THE PROBLEM, THERE WAS A SUDDEN MASSIVE ACCELERATION WHICH I DID NOT CAUSE AND THERE IS NO WAY THE FLOOR MAT COULD HAVE CAUSED SUCH A PROBLEM SINCE I BARELY PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO GO A FEW FEET. I THINK THE PROBLEM IS ELECTRONIC AND AM WORRIED THAT A NEW SPRING ON THE PEDAL IS INSUFFICIENT. • Summary: I OWN A 2005 LEXUS GX470 WITH 10,000 MILES. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE TOYOTA/LEXUS "BUMP/STOP" WHIPLASH SIMULATION ON A DAILY BASIS. LEXUS/TOYOTA HAD BEEN REPLACING DRIVE SHAFTS ON MANY VEHICLES WHICH "JUMP FORWARD" FOR NO REASON. LEXUS IS NOW SAYING THAT THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION IS A "NORMAL DESIGN FUNCTION" OF THE VEHICLE. I SPOKE WITH TOM NORTON, ONE OF THE OWNERS OF LEXUS OF CHERRY HILL, NJ TODAY. HE TOLD ME THAT HIS GX470 DOES THE SAME THING THAT MY $50,000 VEHICLE DOES. MR. NORTON DID AGREE THAT LEXUS HAD REPLACED MULTIPLE DRIVESHAFTS IN THE PAST & THAT THIS CONDITION IS ABSOLUTELY NOT NORMAL. HOWEVER, HE, & I'M NOW USING MY OWN WORDS, MUST HOLD THE COMPANY LINE, & TELL CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY'RE BEING INSTRUCTED FROM LEXUS HEADQUARTERS. AS A POLICE SUPERVISOR, I DRIVE FOR A LIVING. I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED A VEHICLE "JUMPING FORWARD" AS I HAVE ON MY LEXUS GX470. SHOULD THIS PROBLEM NOT BE CORRECTED, I WILL SUE UNDER LEMON LAW. I WILL WRITE MY LEGISLATORS. I WILL WRITE EDITORIALS TO EVERY NEWSPAPER IN THE REGION. I WILL PICKET DEALERSHIPS ON MY DAYS OFF. SHOULD NHTSA AND/OR LEXUS/TOYOTA NEGLECT IMMEDIATE ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER, I WILL SHARE MY EXPERIENCE WITH INVESTIGATIVE REPORTERS. WHY SHOULD MY 4 YEAR OLD HAVE TO SIT IN A VEHICLE THAT IS UNSAFE? WHY SHOULD MY WIFE HAVE TO CRY IN A SERVICE DEPARTMENT BECAUSE HER PLEAS FOR ASSISTANCE GO COMPLETELY UNANSWERED? WHY SHOULD A COCKY SERVICE MANAGER CALL MY CELL PHONE TO EXPLAIN TO ME THAT I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT? TOYOTA NOW CONTEMPLATES BUYING THE FAILING GM AS TOYOTA FEARS POSSIBLE AMERICAN CONSUMER & GOVERNMENTAL BACKLASH. IF YOU HAVE TO RECALL VEHICLES, SO BE IT. AS 60 MINUTES' ANDY ROONEY WOULD SAY, "...IT DOESN'T TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST TO KNOW THERE'S A PROBLEM HERE..." LADIES & GENTLEMEN, THERE'S A PROBLEM HERE. WE'VE PAID TOP DOLLAR FOR WHAT ARE BILLED AS SUPERIOR VEHICLES. LIVE UP TO YOUR REPUTATION & FIX THE PROBLEM.

Negative 2005 Lexus Ls430 car reviews

  1. Maximillian Stamm 2025-11-05

I have owned this car brand new for almost 7 years. From the beginning, I was impressed by the wonderful level of support and service. I trusted the reviews of reliability and long-lasting promises of this car, as it was our retirement car and more money than we have EVER spent on a vehicle. We have done every service recommended and not let anyone but the dealer touch the car. It was treated impeccably. Although there have been some issues with the car, such as shocks/struts leaking, AC compressor, seat belts, battery, interior malfunctions, trunk button/shock lifts, brakes, tire indicators malfunction, auto door closer, etc., I still believe that this car is a great investment. Unfortunately, Lexus says that there is no warranty, but I am confident that with proper care and maintenance, this car will continue to serve me well.

  2. Jeremy Waters 2025-09-04

I have always been a fan of Lexus cars, but I have noticed that the newer models have become increasingly complex, which can lead to expensive failures. For instance, my most recent experience with the Navigation unit was quite frustrating. The screen stopped working at only 28k miles, which affected the GPS, climate control/defrost, rear view camera, and stereo, including the radio/CD changer. Unfortunately, this rendered the car undriveable, as I was unable to use the defrost function. The cost of replacing the gadget is a staggering 6k, which is not covered by warranty, even though the car only has 30k miles. I believe that this is a result of poor engineering.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to bring to your attention a few things that I noticed about the car. Firstly, I found the driver's seat to be a bit uncomfortable as it feels like you're sitting in a hole and the perforated seats don't allow for easy movement. Additionally, I had trouble finding a good way to run the XM antenna in the trunk. Lastly, I found it difficult to see the orange letters on the display as they were too small. Oh, and I also found the ride to be a bit too hard with the low profile tires. I hope this feedback helps!

It's disappointing that the driver's seat comfort in Lexus' flagship sedan wasn't tested more thoroughly. I've owned this car for a month and unfortunately, I'll be selling it soon. The seat feels uncomfortable after sitting in it for a while and the armrest lacks adequate padding, making it uncomfortable as well. On the other hand, my 1999 ES 300 has the most comfortable seats and driving position of any car I've ever owned. While I'm considering a Jaguar or Mercedes for my next car, with their more exciting design and road feel, I'll miss the reliability of a Lexus. It's a tough trade-off to make, but I'm willing to take the risk this time around.

Although the Lexus is a great car, it is not without its flaws. I have experienced several issues, such as a rattling sunroof at low speeds, spurious warnings from the low tire pressure sensors, and a time lag on the accelerator. Unfortunately, the dealership was not very cooperative in dealing with these problems. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right support.

This is a really comfortable luxury sedan that handles like a sports car. I've tried other premium sedans, but I know I wouldn't be satisfied with any other make. Plus, it's really safe. I was in a head-on collision and the car held up really well. And the best part? Nothing ever goes wrong with this car!

This is my fifth Lexus. I've had two 1991 LS's, a 1998 LS, a 2004 GS430 (which was a mistake), and my current 2005 LS 430. I'm so happy to be back in the seat of an LS. All it took was to sit in the driver's seat, have the seats wrap around me, the dash light up, and all of the phenomenal features at my fingertips. From the radar cruise to the LED appointments everywhere at night, to the folding mirrors, and to have a backup camera in a sedan is a dream. I haven't driven any other car since 1996, and I never will. As long as I can afford it, it will always be a Lexus LS.

Hello! I never thought I would desire to join the community of car review writers, but I feel really driven to do it. As a common guy who has always loved cars since I was a child, this passion was transmitted to me by my dear father. Without knowing all the details of the engineering of a vehicle, I am able to feel and recognize what an excellent vehicle is when I drive it through different road surfaces, hilly roads with curves, holes, bumps, etc. I like to feel how fast the vehicle accelerates, how it breaks down to zero from high speeds, how it corners, etc. I also appreciate how smooth it goes over holes and bumps without feeling annoying jumping in my seat and without hearing noises inside, especially at the dashboard that really bothers me. In December 2020, I purchased a 2005 Lexus LS 430 with 137,000 plus original miles. There was a leak from the valves gaskets and also from the lines of the transmission and power steering; the latter two were very mild. I took the car to the Lexus dealer and fixed those problems. Thank God the car doesn’t have any other problems and is in excellent condition. I purchased the vehicle after I tested it the way I mentioned above. I compared this car with newer Lexus models, a 2018 BMW 5 series, a 2017 Cadillac. It is amazing how this old car runs, performs, how comfortable it is, how silent (although not perfectly quiet) the cabin is. This is our first Lexus and honestly, I will not change it for any newer Lexus model or any other car and invested money in repairs mentioned. I could keep on writing about the excellent qualities of this old car, but I will just finish by saying that the experience of driving or being a passenger in this old 2005 Lexus LS 430 car is much better than the one obtained from our 2017 Toyota Sienna XLE. This is a follow-up to my first review of my 2005 Lexus LS430 owner experience. Today is September 29th, 2021, and I purchased my Lexus on January 8th, 2021, with 137,000 plus original miles and just one previous owner.I've driven my car to different states and have put 149,753 miles on it. I really enjoy driving it around. Since purchasing the vehicle, I've had to spend money on correcting leaks in the transmission and power steering fluid lines. I also had to fix a leak from the engine valves gasket, which was corrected with original parts. All of these repairs cost thousands of dollars at the Lexus dealership. However, the leaks were corrected with original parts. I noticed that the vehicle seemed to be 'floating' at high speeds on the highway. I had the shock absorbers checked and found that the front ones weren't leaking and were aftermarket. The rear shocks were original and one was leaking, so I decided to replace all four with Lexus original shock absorbers. The 'floating' sensation disappeared and the cornering, braking, and steering of the car feels much stiffer, making it a safer vehicle. I know that I've spent thousands of dollars on an old vehicle, but it has been worth the expense. Every time I take the car to the Lexus dealership, they provide me with a 'loaner' vehicle. These cars are 'modern' and have many electronic improvements, making them faster, etc. However, my old car is more comfortable inside and the ride is much better in terms of suspension. The newer ones are 'stiffer' because they have a 'sporty' suspension. When I purchased the car, my wife reminded me that I would have to spend money on it because it was old. I can tell you that now she loves the car and says that it's the most comfortable car in the house, including her 2017 Sienna LXE that only has 20,000 miles and is 'sleeping' in our garage. Considering that it's a V8, it's very fuel-efficient, especially if you don't push the gas pedal to overdrive frequently. In general, it has been a wonderful experience to purchase this 2005 Lexus LS430.I can only imagine how wonderful it would have been to purchase it new in 2004 or 2005.

This luxury vehicle practically drives itself. It's so smooth that you won't even feel railroad tracks. The sound system is hard to believe. I purchased the car when it had 90,000 miles on the clock, and it drives better than new. I absolutely love it!

I recently traded in my almost new Lexus GX470 for a 2005 Lexus LS430 and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made! The LS430 is in a league of its own and I have owned various Lexus models in the past (GX, SC, ES), but this one is my favorite. The quality and comfort of this vehicle is simply amazing. I was disappointed to find out that Lexus has lost a lot of its quality over the past few years. I was considering a new LS, but honestly, the quality of the new model isn't the same (even if it has a number of advanced features to offset the difference in quality). I searched for the best condition LS430 I could find and ended up finding one that looked brand new inside and out with only 26k miles and one owner. Money wasn't a factor in trading in the GX (I just never could get myself to love it), but walking away with $20k+ as part of the trade-in was definitely nice. I'm even considering looking for and buying another equally well-kept LS430 to store to replace this one when it's seen more use. However, knowing about the legendary reliability of this car, that may not happen anytime soon. If you are thinking about buying one, I highly recommend it. Cars just aren't produced like this anymore.
