Development of the LS began in 1983 as the F1 project, the code name for a secret flagship sedan. At the time, Toyota's two existing flagship models were the Crown and Century models – both of which catered exclusively for the Japanese market and had little global appeal that could compete with international luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. The resulting sedan followed an extended five-year design process at a cost of over US$1 billion, and premiered with a new V8 engine and numerous luxury features. The Lexus LS was intended from its inception for export markets, and the Lexus division was formed to market and service the vehicle internationally. The original LS 400 debuted to strong sales, and was largely responsible for the successful launch of the Lexus marque.
Since the start of production, each generation of the Lexus LS has been manufactured in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" stands for "Luxury Sedan", although some Lexus importers have preferred to define it as "Luxury Saloon". I TOOK EVASIVE MANEUVERS TO AVOID THE STOPPED VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME. THE LEFT TIRES OF MY LEXUS WENT UP ON THE CENTER MEDIAN AND MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. I STRUCK A CORVETTE STOPPED IN THE LEFT NORTHBOUND LANE OF MILITARY TRAIL. AFTER STRIKING THE CORVETTE, I CONTINUED THROUGH THE SOUTHBOUND LANES UNTIL I INTENTIONALLY DROVE MY CAR INTO A FIRE HYDRANT IN ORDER TO STOP AND AVOID STRIKING GAS PUMPS AT A SHELL STATION. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE INJURED IN THIS CRASH. THE DRIVER OF THE CORVETTE PASSED AWAY. MY LEXUS IS STILL IN POLICE CUSTODY. NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE AT THIS TIME. I WAS CHARGED WITH DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE (MANSLAUGHTER), AND 3 OTHER CHARGES. I AM VIGOROUSLY FIGHTING THOSE CHARGES AS I WAS NOT IMPAIRED AND, AS EVIDENCED BY MY EVASIVE MANEUVERS, HAD CONTROL OF MY CAR. BUT FOR THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION, THIS ACCIDENT AND DEATH WOULD HAVE NOT OCCURRED. - Summary: ON SEP 17, 2009 AS I LEFT A GAS STATION THE LEXUS LS430 YEAR 2005 ACCELERATED AND I WAS ONLY ABLE TO AVOID THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME WAS TO SWERVE TO THE RIGHT AND JAMMED OF THE BRAKE WITH BOTH FEET. UNKNOWINGLY I RAN INTO A TELEPHONE GUY WIRE AND THE ONLY DAMAGE WAS SUPERFICIAL ($3300.00) TO THE RIGHT FRONT LIGHT AND BUMPER. FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT COULD HAVE POSSIBLY GONE WRONG. I NOTICE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL APPEARS TO MOMENTARILY STICK. USAA FIXED THE AUTO AND THOUGH I WONDERED WHAT HAD HAPPENED I DID NOT REPORT THE ACCIDENT UNTIL NOW. *TR

- Summary: TWO MONTHS AGO I HAD A SUDDEN ACCELERATION EVENT IN MY LEXUS LS430, 2005. I WAS INA MUSEUM PARKING GARAGE, MY WIFE GOT OUT, I NEEDED TO REPOSITION TO NOT BE 'ON THE LINE'. I BACKED UP, PRESSED THE GAS VERY LIGHTLY AND THE CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND WAS ABLE TO HALT IT ONE-TWO INCHES FROM THE WALL. INITIALLY, I BLAMED MYSELF BUT THEN THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN MY FLOOR MAT AND REMOVED IT. MY WIFE REMAINS TERRIFIED TO THIS DAY. IN ANALYZING THE PROBLEM, THERE WAS A SUDDEN MASSIVE ACCELERATION WHICH I DID NOT CAUSE AND THERE IS NO WAY THE FLOOR MAT COULD HAVE CAUSED SUCH A PROBLEM SINCE I BARELY PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO GO A FEW FEET. I THINK THE PROBLEM IS ELECTRONIC AND AM WORRIED THAT A NEW SPRING ON THE PEDAL IS INSUFFICIENT. I DIDN'T THINK COMPLAINING WOULD DO ME ANY GOOD BUT NOW THAT I UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM IT IS VITAL FOR YOU TO KNOW THAT MY MODEL OF CAR LEXUS 430 LS IS AFFECTED AS WELL. *TR

THE "RUN-FLAT" TIRES USED BY LEXUS SC430 ARE A CATASTROPHE. THEY ARE SO FIRM THAT ALL ROAD FORCES ARE TRANSMITTED TO WHEEL RIMS AND TIRE SIDEWALLS WITH THE RESULT THAT WHEEL RIMS ARE EASILY BENT AND TIRE SIDEWALLS ARE DAMAGED. THIS SEVERELY AFFECTS VEHICULAR HANDLING AND MANEUVERABILITY, CREATING DANGEROUS SITUATIONS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, ETC. THE DAMAGE HAS RESULTED FORM ORDINARY AND USUAL ROAD SURFACE IRREGULARITIES AND OCCUR READILY DESPITE CONTINUAL VIGILANCE TO AVOID WINTERTIME POTHOLES AND OTHER PAVEMENT IRREGULARITIES. I HAVE HAD CONTINUING NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE WITH NUMEROUS REPLACEMENTS OF WHEEL AND TIRES, IN SPITE OF LOW MILEAGE AND CAUTIOUS DRIVING HABITS. *NM

- Summary: THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN HER 2005 LEXUS LS 430 WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT . *NM THE CONSUMER DOESN'T THINK THE AIR BAG INFLATED ALL THE WAY BECAUSE HER NOISE HIT THE STEERING WHEEL. HER RIGHT SHIN SMASHED INTO THE DASHBOARD WHICH RESULTED IN A VERY LARGE HEMATOMA ON HER RIGHT SHIN. SMOKE STARTED COMING OUT OF THE STEERING COLUMN AND SOON AFTER FLAMES COULD BE SEEN THROUGH THE HEAVY SMOKE. THE FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED BY THE FIRE DEPT. IT TOOK 6 1/2 DAYS FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE REPAIRED. THE CONSUMER REQUEST THAT THE MANUFACTURER REIMBURSE HER FOR HER MEDICAL BILLS, RENTAL PAYMENTS, LEASE PAYMENTS AND AMOUNT PAID TO LAWYER. *NM UPDATED 05/03/10

- Summary: I OWN A 2005 LEXUS GX470 WITH 10,000 MILES. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE TOYOTA/LEXUS "BUMP/STOP" WHIPLASH SIMULATION ON A DAILY BASIS. LEXUS/TOYOTA HAD BEEN REPLACING DRIVE SHAFTS ON MANY VEHICLES WHICH "JUMP FORWARD" FOR NO REASON. LEXUS IS NOW SAYING THAT THIS DANGEROUS CONDITION IS A "NORMAL DESIGN FUNCTION" OF THE VEHICLE. I SPOKE WITH TOM NORTON, ONE OF THE OWNERS OF LEXUS OF CHERRY HILL, NJ TODAY. HE TOLD ME THAT HIS GX470 DOES THE SAME THING THAT MY $50,000 VEHICLE DOES. MR. NORTON DID AGREE THAT LEXUS HAD REPLACED MULTIPLE DRIVESHAFTS IN THE PAST & THAT THIS CONDITION IS ABSOLUTELY NOT NORMAL. HOWEVER, HE, & I'M NOW USING MY OWN WORDS, MUST HOLD THE COMPANY LINE, & TELL CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY'RE BEING INSTRUCTED FROM LEXUS HEADQUARTERS. AS A POLICE SUPERVISOR, I DRIVE FOR A LIVING. I'VE NEVER EXPERIENCED A VEHICLE "JUMPING FORWARD" AS I HAVE ON MY LEXUS GX470. SHOULD THIS PROBLEM NOT BE CORRECTED, I WILL SUE UNDER LEMON LAW. I WILL WRITE MY LEGISLATORS. I WILL WRITE EDITORIALS TO EVERY NEWSPAPER IN THE REGION. I WILL PICKET DEALERSHIPS ON MY DAYS OFF. TOYOTA NOW CONTEMPLATES BUYING THE FAILING GM AS TOYOTA FEARS POSSIBLE AMERICAN CONSUMER & GOVERNMENTAL BACKLASH. IF YOU HAVE TO RECALL VEHICLES, SO BE IT. Back in 2005, I went to the Lexus dealer with a friend and we drove home in an LS430 with the ultra luxury package. Fast forward 16 years, I had the chance to buy the car and I did so to replace my wife's 2006 Toyota Avalon Limited, which was also a great car but had a few problems. Instead, I bought my friend's Lexus. My current car is a 2015 Audi S7, which is a fast and sporty sedan, the kind of car I've always liked. Recently, the Audi got a flat tire and sat in the driveway, so I used the Lexus a lot. The more I drove it, the more I realized that this is truly an incredible car. It may not be sporty or fast, but it is quick and I began to feel like I was in an incredibly well-built, solid, quiet, and smooth car. Now at 78 years old, I have come to realize that I'm going to keep this car in our family until I pass away. 👍😆

This is my 3rd Lexus and I am absolutely thrilled with it! I always receive compliments on how smooth the ride is, even from Mercedes and BMW owners. I am already looking forward to my next Lexus!

I traded a 1999 LS400 which was near perfect, but the 2005 LS 430 with the Nav-Sport Package is just perfect! It sells itself, but I can't understate the quality and reliability!

This car is amazing! It rides so smoothly, even though I bought it with 180k on the clock. It feels like a brand new car! I've owned several Mercedes in the past, and while they were good cars, this Lexus blows them away by far! I don't think I'll ever go back to buying a Benz because they just don't stack up well against Lexus!

The LS 430 is a pleasure to drive. I recently completed a 10-hour trip in the LS, and I was ready to turn around and make the return trip. I was not tired or uncomfortable at any time during the journey. The radar cruise control is easy to use and takes all the stress out of driving. The seating is very comfortable and roomy. All the systems, such as navigation, satellite radio/audio, and the ventilation system, are easy to use. The air suspension and braking system are flawless.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to bring to your attention a few things that I noticed about the car. Firstly, I found the driver's seat to be a bit uncomfortable as it feels like you're sitting in a hole and the perforated seats don't allow for easy movement. Additionally, I had trouble finding a good way to run the XM antenna in the trunk. Lastly, I found it difficult to see the orange letters on the display as they were too small. Oh, and I also found the ride to be a bit too hard with the low profile tires. I hope this feedback helps!

It's disappointing that the driver's seat comfort in Lexus' flagship sedan wasn't tested more thoroughly. I've owned this car for a month and unfortunately, I'll be selling it soon. The seat feels uncomfortable after sitting in it for a while and the armrest lacks adequate padding, making it uncomfortable as well. On the other hand, my 1999 ES 300 has the most comfortable seats and driving position of any car I've ever owned. While I'm considering a Jaguar or Mercedes for my next car, with their more exciting design and road feel, I'll miss the reliability of a Lexus. It's a tough trade-off to make, but I'm willing to take the risk this time around.

Although the Lexus is a great car, it is not without its flaws. I have experienced several issues, such as a rattling sunroof at low speeds, spurious warnings from the low tire pressure sensors, and a time lag on the accelerator. Unfortunately, the dealership was not very cooperative in dealing with these problems. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the right support.

Despite some minor and one major problem, I am confident in the quality of my LS430. While Lexus and the dealership may have struggled to resolve the issues, I remain convinced that I made a wise investment in purchasing a Lexus. Although the navigation system can be challenging at times, I am confident in my ability to master it. While the XJ8L may be more stylish, I am confident that the LS430 is the superior choice for me.
