The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).

The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.

Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.

The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 2000 Volkswagen Golf problems

Based on the sources provided, here are some common problems with the Volkswagen Golf 2000 based on complaints from owners:

  • Rattling Sound From Engine:
      • Problem: Rattling noise when starting the engine, disappearing after driving a few miles.
      • Solution: Typically linked to a faulty high-pressure fuel pump. Replacing the fuel pump every 20,000 miles can address this issue.
  • Limp Mode Activation:
      • Problem: Sudden activation of Limp Mode while driving.
      • Solution: Commonly associated with a faulty water pump. Replacing the water pump can resolve this issue, preventing further occurrences of Limp Mode.
  • Rough Gear Changes (Automatics):
      • Problem: Automatic gear changes are not smooth.
      • Solution: Often requires a complete replacement of the gearbox unit, especially in earlier models. Checking the timing chain for any issues before replacing the gearbox is recommended.
  • Rear Boot Locking Problems:
      • Problem: Issues with locking the boot.
      • Solution: Typically caused by a cracked brake servo pipe leaking brake fluid. Replacing the brake servo pipe can solve this common problem.
  • Hot ABS Unit:
      • Problem: Overheating of the ABS unit, even during short journeys.
      • Solution: Common in Golfs built between 1997 and 2004 due to an electrical fault in the ABS control unit. Replacing the ABS unit can prevent potential fire hazards.
  • Grinding From Rear:
      • Problem: Grinding noise from the rear of the car while driving.
      • Solution: Some Golfs built between 1997 and 2004 had faulty rear axles due to moisture entering the ball joints. Replacing the entire rear axle can eliminate this grinding noise.
  • Faulty Seat Belt:
      • Problem: Seat belt tightening excessively during sudden movements.
      • Solution: Often related to faulty seat belt pre-tensioners. Replacing the pre-tensioners is crucial to prevent potential fire risks associated with excessive heat discharge.
  • Struggle To Get Fifth Gear:
      • Problem: Difficulty shifting into 5th gear.
      • Solution: Checking gearbox oil levels and inspecting gear linkages and cables for wear and tear is essential. Replacing damaged components can resolve this issue.

These common problems highlight various issues that Volkswagen Golf 2000 owners may encounter, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and timely replacements to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and safety.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-07-08
  • VIN: 9BWGC21J4Y4
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: 2000 VW GOLF 2.0L ENGINE; DRIVING TO WORK ON FREEWAY (65-70MPH). HEARD "POP" AND A HISSING NOISE FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE. SLOWED DOWN AND PULLED OVER TO SHOULDER, SAW COOLANT LEAKING. ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, FOUND INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE TO VALVES AND PISTONS. CAUSE WAS A FAULTY WATER PUMP: VW USES A PLASTIC IMPELLER ON THE WATER PUMPS WHICH FREQUENTLY BREAK AND CAUSE THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT VERY QUICKLY. AFTER THE DAMAGE, A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH ON VW FORUMS REVEALED NUMEROUS OTHER PEOPLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM I HAD. THE END RESULT WAS THAT I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE, RADIATOR, TIMING BELT, WATER PUMP ($6000 REPAIR BILL). SADLY, VW PUT IN THE SAME TYPE OF WATER PUMP WITH THE PLASTIC IMPELLER, SO I HAVE LITTLE CONFIDENCE THAT IT WILL LAST LONGER THAN ANOTHER 60000 MILES. I WOULD HAVE CHANGED IT WITH THE TIMING BELT, BUT VW SAYS THE BELT IS NOT DUE TO BE REPLACED ON THIS VEHICLE UNTIL 105,000 MILES (JUST OUTSIDE THE 100,000 MILE WARRANTY, CONVENIENTLY!) CAR HAD ONLY 60,000 MILES ON IT, VW CLAIMS IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO AGE OF VEHICLE. *TR

  • Summary: ERROR CODE P1128. MANY OF THE VW 2.0 ENGINES GET IT AND END UP CHANGING MANY PARTS. THEN AFTER THEY CHANGE THE WHOLE INTAKE DOES THE PROBLEM GO AWAY. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THIS ISN'T POOR DRIVING OR POOR CARE FOR A CAR ITS POOR QUALITY. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP, IF I DO NOT REPLACE THE AIRBAG, IT MAY NOT DEPLOY IF I AM IN AN ACCIDENT, OR IT COULD DEPLOY WHEN I AM JUST DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. I FEEL AS THOUGH AN AIRBAG SHOULD LAST THE LIFETIME OF THE VEHICLE, OR ONLY NEED TO BE REPLACED WHEN IT IS ACTUALLY DEPLOYED. *TR

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 2000 VW GOLF. THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS STUCK ON. THERE IS NO WAY FOR ME TO KNOW IF THE BAG WILL DEPLOY OR NOT. IN ORDER FOR THE DEALER TO LOOK AT IT IT WOULD COST ME $100 FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND BETWEEN $500 AND $700 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. SO AFTER I PAY $500 OR $600 THEY STILL WONT GUARANTEE THE BAGS ARE SAFE. HOW DO I GO ABOUT FIGURING THIS OUT. IT SEEMS LIKE A VERY BIG SAFETY ISSUE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF VOLKSWAGENS AND TO PUT ME AND MY FAMILY IN DANGER IS UNACCEPTABLE. DO I PAY THE MONEY AND JUST HOPE IT IS FIXED? NO ACCIDENTS YET BUT WHAT IF. I NO LONGER TRUST THE ABILITY OF THE CARS SAFETY. THIS IS MY COMPLAINT. I FEEL I WAS SOLD A CAR AND NOW THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE CAR HAVE BECOME COMPROMISED. HELP! *NM

THE JAMMED SEAT BELT IS PREVENTING THE RETURNING THE REAR SEAT BACK TO AN UPRIGHT POSITION. THESE ARE THE ONLY TIMES THAT THIS SEAT BELT HAS BEEN USED SINCE PURCHASE. Negative 2000 Volkswagen Golf car reviews

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. Despite being less than a year old, it has required multiple repairs including fixing a window and the brakes. Additionally, the headlights blow out frequently and the electrical system malfunctions often, causing the alarm to go off and lights to flicker. The transmission is also showing signs of wear and tear. Overall, this car does not meet the standards of quality and reliability that one would expect from a new vehicle.

  2. Keegan Stanton 2024-10-10

This car has been extremely unreliable, with a seemingly endless list of problems including the mass air flow sensor, headlights, dashboard lights, glove box (which has failed twice and has yet to be acknowledged by VW), ABS, hydraulic brake unit, radio, and more. Fortunately, I have roll down windows, unlike many others who have experienced issues with their power windows.

I've been driving my car for 2.5 years now and while I love driving it, I've had some issues with repairs. Unfortunately, the 'check engine light' keeps coming on and it's been a hassle to deal with. It was covered under warranty for the first 2 years, but now I have to pay $75 every time I take it to the dealership for diagnosis and repair. The sensors seem to be the issue, as they can give false alarms due to weather conditions like heavy snow or rain. It's been frustrating, but I'm hopeful that it will get resolved soon.

I've had my car for just over a year now and unfortunately, I've had to take it back to the dealership over twelve times for repairs. I've experienced issues such as coolant loss, driver and passenger windows falling down several times, and an O2 recall. I've also had problems with the door handle lock assembly, and the list goes on and on. I previously owned a 97 Jetta and never had any problems whatsoever. The dealer informed me that they are getting parts from a different manufacturer for the new models. I really hope they get their act together soon.

I purchased a fully loaded GLX TDI with all available options. Although it creaked and groaned when I first drove it off the lot, I was assured that this would subside. Unfortunately, I later discovered that the windshield had a defective coating on the inside that could not be cleaned off. Despite having to replace the heater motor three times and experiencing issues with the windows, I have been disappointed by the rattles and thumps that the car produces. When I brought this up to the service manager, I was told that I was being overly sensitive. Additionally, the interior's Velcro lint catcher has been quite disgusting.

I bought this car used with 80,000 miles and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it, just like the person I bought it from. It's a fun, reliable, and zippy car. I've had a lot of cars in the past, but this one is perhaps my favorite so far. I really appreciate all the options it has for being an economy-based car.

  2. Dane Medhurst 2024-09-04

This car runs like a top. It's affordable, fun to drive and has earned my trust. The cup holders are cheap and flimsy, but that's not a big deal. The features-to-cost ratio is much better than anything in its class. I really love this car!

  3. Carroll Schuppe 2024-09-03

Despite some initial excitement when I purchased my TDI in 2000, I have unfortunately experienced a number of issues with the vehicle. These include problems with the Check Engine light, slipping gears, faulty manifold gaskets, and now my transmission. While I appreciate the car's interior and gas mileage, I have been disappointed by the unreliability and numerous headaches I have faced. Additionally, I have not been satisfied with the customer service and mechanics at my dealership. However, I remain hopeful that these issues can be resolved and that I can continue to enjoy the benefits of my TDI.

  4. Mitchel Schaden 2024-08-17

When your car is running well, it's an absolute joy to own and drive. However, when it's not, getting the right service can be difficult and expensive. Unfortunately, I have experienced poor execution of service on several occasions. VW has also been reluctant to honor the warranty, which has been disappointing. The dealer service has not been up to my expectations either.

  5. Harley Stoltenberg 2024-07-27

This is one tough little car. Although there are some problems, such as the emission sensors being too sensitive and the 'Check Engine' light being indecisive, it moves like a dream and I can zip from here to there effortlessly.
