The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.

Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.

The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.

The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.

The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.

The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 2006 Lexus Gs430 problems

The Lexus GS430, produced between 2001 and 2007, is a luxury mid-size sedan known for its advanced technology and features. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners should be aware of.

  • Oil Consumption: Later models of the GS430 (2006-2007) were more prone to oil consumption issues, which can be caused by worn-out piston rings, cylinder walls, or valve seals. This issue can lead to a decrease in engine performance, increased oil consumption, and potentially cause damage to the engine if not addressed promptly.
  • Transmission Problems: Both early and later models of the GS430 can experience transmission problems, such as slipping, jerking, or hesitation during gear shifts. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or faulty solenoids. Transmission problems can lead to a decrease in vehicle performance, increased fuel consumption, and potentially cause damage to the transmission if not addressed promptly.
  • Suspension Issues: The GS430's suspension system can experience issues such as worn-out bushings, broken springs, or leaking shocks. This issue can lead to a decrease in vehicle performance, increased wear and tear on other suspension components, and potentially cause damage to the tires if not addressed promptly.
  • Electrical Problems: Some GS430s were also prone to electrical problems, such as blown fuses, malfunctioning sensors, or faulty wiring. This issue can lead to various symptoms, such as warning lights on the dashboard, intermittent electrical failures, or complete electrical failures.
  • Steering Issues: Some GS430s may experience steering issues, such as hard steering, excessive play, or wandering on the road. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as low power steering fluid levels, worn-out steering components, or faulty steering sensors.
  • Brake Problems: Some GS430s may experience brake problems, such as soft or spongy brakes, squeaking or grinding noises, or vibrations during braking. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or leaking brake lines.

Regular maintenance and troubleshooting can help identify and fix these issues, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience. Negative 2006 Lexus Gs430 car reviews

Hi there! I wanted to share my recent car buying experience with you. Unfortunately, I got into a fender bender with my Lexus GS 430 and it required $10,000 in repairs. Surprisingly, the airbags did not deploy. On the other hand, the low-priced Nissan that I collided with only sustained minor damages. I have been having some trouble with customer service at Lexus, which has been frustrating. Overall, I would rate the construction of the Lexus a 10, but the safety features a 1. I am considering exploring other options for my next car purchase. Thanks for listening!

Although Lexus attempted to design a sports sedan, this particular model may have gone a bit too far. The ride can be quite harsh, with every bump on the road being felt, and the road noise is not up to par for a luxury brand. As an owner of two pure sports cars, I prefer a sedan that doesn't feel like a wannabe sports car. Unfortunately, the adjustable suspension doesn't seem to work at all, as the soft and hard settings feel the same. Additionally, the interior tends to rattle and squeak, possibly due to the high-power stereo or improper design of the interior panels. However, I must say that my previous 2000 GS 400 was a better-built car, even though it didn't have as many gadgets as this one. I could enjoy a quiet and comfortable ride when I chose to.

Positive 2006 Lexus Gs430 car reviews

I've been buying the Lexus model since 1994 and this one is definitely the most enjoyable to drive. The design is fantastic and the cockpit has all the features you need right at your fingertips.

  2. Elliott Dare 2024-11-23

After owning many MB's and BMW's, I finally decided to purchase a Lexus. I am absolutely thrilled with the exceptional build quality and the attention to detail that has been put into every aspect of the car. The Black/Chasmere color combination has been receiving compliments from everyone on the street. The spider wheels give it a youthful and trendy appearance, which often surprises people when they see my gray hair.

I recently traded my 2003 E500 for the GS430 and I must say, there is no comparison. The Lexus performs just as well as the E500, unless you are driving aggressively, which I stopped doing ages ago. The technology, build quality, and reliability make the GS430 a clear choice over the E-Class. It is a great looking, great performing, tech-laden car that is a blast to drive. If you put aside any preconceived notions about European and Japanese cars (I know it's hard as I was sad to part with my Benz), and test drive a loaded GS430 and an E500, you'll definitely choose the Lexus. Especially when you realize that although these cars are in the same class, a comparably equipped E500 will cost you a lot more and won't be nearly as reliable.

DRIVING AND HANDLING: I had a great time driving over the Santa Cruz mountains yesterday. The acceleration, handling and smooth shifting made it easy to control the car on winding roads and in fast traffic. Although the brakes are a bit grabby and the accelerator is a bit stiff, they may soften with use. The stiffer suspension button is also quite useful. INTERIOR: The car is comfortable and road noise is low. The steering wheel rim diameter has been increased for a sportier feel. The cool air seat pump, bluetooth and keyless entry are nice additions. GPS is a must-have for big cities, and the Triptronic shifting is a lot of fun.

  5. Percival Bernhard 2024-09-19

I had a '99 GS 400 that I drove for 212,000 miles and now my son drives it. This new GS 430 is even more enjoyable to drive. The six-speed transmission, along with the engine management systems, make it a dream. It is the best blend of performance and comfort I have found on the market. I know some sedans have more 'feel,' but I am impressed with how the car lets me truly enjoy the road while keeping me comfortable enough for long trips. The Levinson sound system is truly the best I have heard in any car. I am completely satisfied so far in the first 8,000 miles. Yes, that is right, I already have over 8,000 miles on the car.
