The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.

Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.

The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.

The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.

The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.

The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 2004 Lexus Gs430 problems

The Lexus GS430, produced from 2001 to 2007, is known for its luxurious interior, advanced technology, and smooth ride. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners should be aware of.

  1. Engine Misfires: Engine misfires are a common problem in the Lexus GS430, particularly in the 2001-2005 models. These misfires can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or fuel injectors. In some cases, the problem may be due to a more serious issue, such as a cracked engine block or head gasket.
  2. Oil Consumption: Another common problem in the Lexus GS430 is excessive oil consumption. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2006-2007 models, which were equipped with the 3UZ-FE engine. The excessive oil consumption can be caused by worn piston rings, valve guides, or cylinder walls. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system, which can allow oil to leak into the intake manifold.
  3. Transmission Problems: Transmission problems are also common in the Lexus GS430, particularly in the 2001-2005 models. These problems can include slipping, hesitation, and difficulty shifting. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty torque converter or transmission solenoid. In other cases, the problem may be due to low transmission fluid levels or a clogged transmission filter.
  4. Suspension Issues: Suspension issues are a common problem in the Lexus GS430, particularly in the 2001-2005 models. These issues can include worn or damaged bushings, struts, or springs. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty steering rack or tie rod end.
  5. Electrical Problems: Electrical problems are also common in the Lexus GS430, particularly in the 2001-2005 models. These problems can include blown fuses, faulty relays, or damaged wiring. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty alternator or battery.
  6. Brake Problems: Brake problems are a common issue in the Lexus GS430, particularly in the 2001-2005 models. These problems can include worn brake pads or rotors, leaking brake lines, or a faulty brake master cylinder. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty ABS (anti-lock braking system) module or sensor.

To diagnose and troubleshoot these issues, it's important to first identify the year, model, and engine type of the car. Regular maintenance and troubleshooting can help identify and fix these issues, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

Negative 2004 Lexus Gs430 car reviews

If you're considering purchasing a GS430, it's important to keep in mind that it may not be suitable for winter driving. This car may struggle to run even in just 2 inches of snow, and the traction control may not be as effective as you'd like. While other cars like the GS 400, Mercedes, and BMW have been able to drive up my driveway just 6 days after a snowfall, my GS 430 has repeatedly gotten stuck. Unfortunately, my dealership experience was also quite disappointing, which is surprising given my 25 years of driving. It's important to be aware of these potential issues before making a purchase. Thank you for considering this information.

I recently upgraded from a GS400 to a GS430. Although the new model has better navigation and sound, I have noticed a decrease in throttle and tip-in response, which I attribute to the different transmission and possibly gear ratios. I find myself having to press down harder on the accelerator to get going. While the GS400 was more responsive and fun to drive, I am considering the new Infiniti M45 once my lease is up.

I have the Sport Handling Package with the 17-inch wheels and low profile tires on my Lexus. While the handling is improved, I have noticed that the noise generated by the tires on highways is quite significant. In my opinion, the gain in handling is not worth the noise. Therefore, I would advise anyone against buying this option as it may negate the purpose of owning a Lexus, which is to have a good ride, good quality, and a quiet interior. Additionally, it would be great if the car came pre-wired for phone installation, as phones are being used by the majority of owners. With more and more states enacting hands-free use of phone laws, this would be a valuable addition to the car.

Picked up my 2003 GS in December of 2002. Still have a host of issues with it from suspension rattles, ultra light steering, and road noise being picked up from the sunroof drain tube (have to keep sunroof shade closed at all times). Car feels loose - almost as if the dies that make it are getting worn. Time for Lexus to update the GS.

Positive 2004 Lexus Gs430 car reviews

  1. Rudy Cummerata 2025-01-09

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Lexus GS. I've actually owned two - my first was a 1999 GS 400, but after test driving a 2002 Accord, I knew the Lexus was the way to go. I loved it so much that I eventually upgraded to a GS 430, which is even smoother than my first one. As a long-time Lexus fan, I can attest to their outstanding reliability. This car is not only fast, but also a blast to drive - especially with Michelin Pilot Sport tires, which provide excellent handling. Overall, I highly recommend this car. I've put over 60K miles on it in less than a year, and I drive pretty hard, but I haven't had any issues. Just make sure to keep up with regular oil and fluid changes!

  2. Scotty Leffler 2024-11-16

I can tell you really love your car!

  3. Ola Boyle 2024-11-10

I love this car! Before this one, I had the GS300 2001. I was also considering the SC430, but I needed more back seat room for now. I didn't want an SUV, although the new GX470 is really nice. When I test drove the GS430, I couldn't believe how different it was from the 300. I have all the bells and whistles that the 430 has to offer. People ask me why I got the same vehicle, until they get in it and I take them for a ride. They say, 'Wow, this is not the same vehicle!' I must say, I am truly in love. Not only with the car, but the service is outstanding.

  4. Rosario Johnston 2024-10-29

As someone who has owned 5 Lexus automobiles, I can confidently say that the 2004 LS430 is the best one yet. If you're looking for a vehicle that is both reliable and comfortable, with great performance and all the latest features, then this is the car for you.

  5. Ryann Blick 2024-10-28

I chose the Lexus for its proven reliability and minimal depreciation. However, I found that the controls were not very intuitive and the memorized seat position required the vehicle to be in park with the foot off the brake, which could be inconvenient on long trips if the driver wants to return to the original setting. Additionally, the Navigation System left much to be desired, as it required mastery of over 100 pages of instructions. It's important to note that the Lexus GS 430 must be driven by the book, as in Japan, the nail that sticks up will soon be hammered flat - and the same goes for Lexus drivers.
