The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.

Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.

The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.

The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.

The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.

The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 1999 Lexus Gs300 problems

The Lexus GS300, produced from 1993 to 2006, is known for its luxurious feel and powerful engine. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1999 Lexus GS300, based on owner complaints and expert analysis:

  1. Ball Joint Failure: The ball joints in the GS300 are prone to wearing out faster than in other vehicles. This can lead to the knuckle separating from the control arm, which can be dangerous. Replacing ball joints can be expensive, as it requires removing the control arm and pressing the new joint into place.
  2. Door Lock Actuator Failure: The door lock actuators in the GS300 can fail, leading to issues with locking and unlocking the doors. This can be caused by electrical gremlins and can be expensive to diagnose and fix if the problem is not immediately apparent.
  3. Variable Valve Timing Solenoid Failure: The variable valve timing solenoids in the GS300 can fail, leading to a sudden loss of power. The part is relatively inexpensive, but replacing it can be difficult, as it is located underneath the engine cover.
  4. Sensor Replacement: The GS300 may require occasional sensor replacement, such as O2 sensors and the MAF sensor. These sensors are located in accessible areas, but replacing them can still be time-consuming and require specialized tools.
  5. Starter Motor Issues: The starter motor in the GS300 can fail, which can be expensive to repair, as it is attached to the transmission.
  6. Rattling Sounds: As the GS300 ages, parts such as the dashboard and sunroof may come loose, creating rattling sounds. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and fix, as they may require disassembling parts of the vehicle.
  7. Moisture in Headlights: Moisture can collect inside the headlights of the GS300, which can lead to reduced visibility and the need for replacement. This can be expensive, especially if OEM parts are used.
  8. Check Engine Light: The GS300 may experience issues with the Check Engine Light, which can be caused by a variety of problems, such as faulty oxygen sensors or loose gas caps.

These issues are not exclusive to the 1999 model year, and some may be more prevalent in other years of the GS300's production run. However, they are common complaints from owners of the 1999 Lexus GS300. While these problems can be frustrating, many of them can be addressed with regular maintenance and timely repairs.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-01-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JT8BD68S6X0
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I OWN A 1999 LEXUS GS300. I'VE HEARD SOME CREAKING NOISES COMING FROM THE FRONT SUSPENSION LEADING UP TO THE FAILING OF MY LOWER BALL JOINTS. BEFORE IT FAILED I BROUGHT IT TO FIRESTONE ON FT. LEWIS, WA TO GET A SUSPENSION INSPECTION WHERE THEY DID NOT SEE OR HEAR ANYTHING FROM MY SUSPENSION. SO A WEEK LATER (JANUARY 15TH 2007) I WAS DRIVING IN SEATTLE, WA WHEN THE LOWER BALL JOINT FAILED. THE RESULT OF THAT WAS BODY DAMAGE DUE TO THE VEHICLE CRASHING DOWN ONTO THE WHEEL AND A SNAPPED ABS SENSOR WIRE. JUST TO REPAIR THIS VEHICLE TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE WAS TO REPLACE THE BALL JOINT AND NEW TIRES THAT ALL TOGETHER AMOUNTED TO ABOUT ALMOST $600 DOLLARS FOR A PART WAS ABOUT $50-60 DOLLARS. THE COST OF REPAIRING MY VEHICLE ISN'T AN ISSUE BUT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS MALFUNCTION OR DEFECTED ITEM THAT NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED. I'VE WAITED TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE EFFECTED BY THIS AND SINCE THAN THERE WERE MORE THAN A DOZEN INSTANCE WHERE THE BALL JOINT HAS OR HAD FAILED CAUSING DAMAGE AND IN TIME WILL CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY TO PEOPLE NOT AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM I.E ON A FREEWAY WHERE PEOPLE CAN'T STOP IN TIME TO AVOID IT OR THE ACTUALLY WHEEL COMING OFF THE VEHICLE AND HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE. MOST OF THESE INSTANCES HAS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS, SIDE STREETS OR PARKING LOTS. LIKE I SAID BEFORE I WAITED TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO SEE THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE EFFECTED BY IT AND TO ALSO COMPILE MORE INFORMATION. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-02-06
  • VIN: JT8BD68SXX0
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: I AM AN OWNER OF A 1999 LEXUS GS300. I JUST RECENTLY HAD 2 FUEL INJECTORS FAIL AND LEAK GASOLINE IN AND OVER THE ENGINE. I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FATAL FIRE OR EXPLOSION. I WAS NOT COVERED UNDERNEAT WARRANTY FOR THIS ISSUE AS I TOOK THE CAR IN AT 70,000 MILES. WHAT I HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM WITH IS THAT THIS CAR IN PARTICULAR, BEING THAT IT IS A LEXUS, SHOULD NOT HAVE TOO MANY PROBLEMS NOR REPEATING PROBLEMS. THIS TAKES ME TO THE HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE. AT 23,000 MILES THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE REPLACED. THEN AGAIN, 2 YEARS LATER, AT 42,000 MILES, AN ADDITIONAL FUEL INJECTOR HAD TO BE REPLACES. AND NOW AN ADDITIONAL 2 YEARS LATER I HAVE 2 FUEL INJECTOS GO BAD AS WELL. DID I BUY A LEMON? DID I GET A BAD EGG FROM A REPUTABLE CAR MANUFACTURER? I DON'T BELIEVE I SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THIS ISSUE AND THAT I PURCHASED A CAR WITH PROBLEMS THAT ARE TOO FREQUENT AND "FISHY!" THE MECHANIC AND SALES REP. AT THE CURRENT DEALER I USE SAID THIS IS AS UNIQUE AS IT GETS AND THAT HE RARELY IF EVER SEES PROBLEMS LIKE THIS FROM THIS CAR. PLEASE HELP!!!*AK

Negative 1999 Lexus Gs300 car reviews

  1. Jalon Hackett 2024-10-05

I bought my GS 300 new in 1999. Although there have been some little irritations from the beginning that have driven me crazy, I still enjoy driving it. There is a shimmy and shake somewhere in the rear seat that comes and goes, and when the wheels are properly aligned, the steering wheel shakes. Additionally, there are some other annoying rattles in the front dash somewhere. However, I do love the GPS feature and the gas mileage around town of 19 MPH is reasonable. The seats are comfortable and the ride is fairly smooth. Although the car is not as quiet as I was expecting, it still meets my needs.

  2. Zander Kunde 2024-09-23

Although I was initially excited about purchasing this car, I have encountered several issues that have been disappointing. The interior lacks the luxury that I was hoping for, and the seats are uncomfortable, especially with lumbar support. Additionally, the back seat is cramped, which my children do not appreciate, even when the front seats are moved forward. On one occasion, I had trouble starting the car on a sunny afternoon, which was surprising since it usually has trouble starting in cold or wintery weather. Despite these issues, I am confident that the car will continue to serve me well, and I am pleased with my purchase overall.

  3. Karl Veum 2024-01-24

Overall, I'm thrilled with this car! It's an excellent long-distance tourer, and the engine is incredibly smooth, quick, well-made, and durable. I've driven many thousands of miles in it, and it's been the most reliable car I've owned to date.

  2. Willy Tillman 2024-10-29

I bought a 1999 GS 300 last year and I absolutely love it! It has had no quality problems, looks great, and has superior reliability. Everyone who sees it says it looks like a 2005.

  3. Laurel Crist 2024-10-10

Firstly, let me introduce you to my beloved Lexus, or as I like to call it, the Lexbubba. I must say, it is the best car I have ever owned. Although, I have noticed a slight noise in the back when I pull off, but other than that, it is a very powerful car. From this point on, it's Lexus for me!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I'm really glad I purchased this car about 6 months ago. It had 36k miles on it when I got it, and so far, it's been great! I had the option to get a BMW 5 series at the same price point, but I really wanted a reliable car that wouldn't be too expensive to fix, especially compared to other luxury cars. The quality of the car feels amazing, much better than my friend's Acura 3.5. I also love that you can set different climate control temperatures for the driver and passenger. Thanks for listening!

Lexus, in my opinion, has surpassed Mercedes and BMW in terms of quality, luxury, and overall satisfaction. It's no wonder that JD Powers and Assoc. has presented Lexus with so many awards for the RX, GS, LS, and ES. I highly recommend a Lexus; penny for penny, there is no better vehicle to drive.
