The Kia Telluride is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2019. Positioned above the smaller Sorento, the Telluride was previewed as a concept car in 2016, with the production model debuting in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. It shares components and specifications with its sister model, the Hyundai Palisade, including its engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Named after the town of Telluride, Colorado, the Telluride is the largest vehicle Kia has manufactured in the United States.

Overview

The production version of the Telluride was launched at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January. Previously, the Telluride was displayed as a customized version inspired by fashion designer Brandon Maxwell's Texas-inspired collection, at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. The overall design is similar to the 2016 concept except for the front end which was completely redesigned.

The Telluride is the first Kia designed specifically for the US market, with the design work handled at the Kia Design Center in Irvine, California. The production version Telluride is powered by a 3.8-liter Lambda II V6 Atkinson cycle gasoline engine rated at 291 hp (295 PS; 217 kW) and 355 N⋅m (36.2 kg⋅m; 262 lb⋅ft), paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.

The Telluride features four drive modes – Smart, Eco, Sport and Comfort. Snow and AWD Lock modes are also available for specific driving conditions, and the on-demand electro-hydraulic AWD system with multi-plate clutch plate constantly redistributes power to both axles. In Eco and Smart modes, power is completely routed to the front wheels, whereas Sport mode splits the power down to 65 percent front, 35 percent rear.

The standard towing rate for this SUV is rated at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg), and it also features the optional self-levelling rear suspension where the ride height is automatically calibrated depending on vehicle load to optimise control and stability.

The Telluride is not marketed in South Korea as it is only produced in the United States, whereas its Hyundai counterpart, the Korean-built Palisade is marketed there instead. Exports from the West Point, Georgia plant to the Middle East started in February 2019. Kia limited exports of the Telluride to around 3,000 units annually.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5XYP3DHC5NG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Sunroof is stuck in an open position unable to be closed. Upon attempting to open the sunroof, the deflector snapped off the assembly and the sunroof track broke. Took car to dealership (Raceway Kia, 4044 US-9, Freehold, NJ 07728) for service. Dealership indicated the sunroof is beyond repair and requires installation of an entirely brand new sunroof assembly at a cost of $5730 because it occurred outside the warranty (warranty expired at 60,000 miles and the car had 70,463 miles when sunroof broke). They were unable to manually close the sunroof as a temporary solution. Therefore, the sunroof remains open due to the broken track and is covered with plastic to avoid the elements. There were no prior symptoms indicating that the sunroof would break in this way. In fact, in three years of ownership, the sunroof was rarely used and only opened a handful of times before breaking. At this time of this writing, the sunroof is available for inspection while I look for more economical means of repair versus the dealership's plan to replace the entire assembly.

  • Summary: One morning when I went to get into my car I noticed a large crack approximately 12in in length across my windshield. There had been no noticeable chips in the windshield prior and there was no sign of being hit of any kind. I took the car to be looked at by a family member in glass and he said the issue is a manufacturing issue and the glass is thin and unsafe. The dealer said they won’t replace because it isn’t in the date range involved in the class action lawsuit. Since this I have had several more chips and the crack now runs all the way across the glass and extends up and down

  • Summary: Paint peeling from 2020 Kia Telluride. It seems to be a known issue with many Kia Telluride owners experiencing the same paint defects. This is a serious quality issue, I've had many vehicles for 10+ years and never experienced the issues I'm having with this car. The car has under 50000 miles and for it to be peeling like this seems to be a manufacture defect. Kia has refused to fix the issue as they claim its not under warranty.

  • VIN: 5XYP34HC0MG

  • Summary: I have it so the doors do not automatically unlock when I arrive somewhere. When I arrive at a destination and put the car in park, the people in the backseat cannot pull the handle to get out. If the child safety lock (which is a button on the door handle with the window and lock buttons) is ON, the back windows and the door latches do NOT work. If the child safety lock is OFF, the windows work but the door still cannot be opened using the latch. This seems like a safety issue to me, since most people will reach for the latch in an emergency, but they can't get out. I have to push the unlock button form the driver door. If it is pushed on the front passenger door, it will not unlock the back doors.

  • Summary: We contacted Kia US after taking the Kia Telluride to a Kia service station for an oil change. The service tech told us that they were not going to do an oil change because,”the Telluride was a ticking time bomb.” This was said in front of the Kia service Mgr.We were very nervous driving the vehicle because no one explained what that meant.Shortly after the service appointment, the Telluride’s engine caught on fire.We call Kia US that same day to open up a case.We explained all the issues we had with the Telluride (windshield issues, headlight issues, main display screen issues, luggage rack issues, sunroof, drive shaft, wiper fluid filter issues), to include the engine. After paying an attorney to provide all documents that Kia US requested from us, including every oil change receipt for the Telluride, Kia US only offered to only pay for the parts for the driveshaft/engine fire issues. To make matters worse, the Kia service department said that the 100+ parts needed to repair the engine, were on back order. Our Telluride’s engine caught fire in April and Kia US has done nothing for us, even though the issues are under 2 recalls. This is unacceptable for a manufacturer to ignore recalls, especially when it comes to the safety of people, families and children. We contacted Kia US for 6 months with no help from them. We sent registered/certified letters to Kia US executives, legal Dept, Kia Finance and the last communication from Kia US was that they are not doing anything for us- no repairs for the recalls, even though we mentioned the recalls associated with our Vin/Telluride. They are completely disregarding the entire situation. Since then, we have had to find another option for transportation since we have been without the Telluride for 6 months. Kia US needs to take back the Telluride and either provide us with a safe/working vehicle or reimburse us for what we have spent on the Telluride. Thank you for your assistance. Latest negative Kia Telluride car reviews

  1. Glen Hintz 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2020

I recently purchased a 2020 Kia Telluride SX AWD and initially, I was thrilled with its performance, value, safety features, looks, and price. However, after two months of use, I started experiencing some issues. For instance, I noticed that the stitching in the seat is coming apart, the transmission shifts down abruptly when coasting to a stop, and the tech screens go gray briefly and are becoming glitchy. Although I am disappointed with these issues, I am taking it in to the service department and hope to get them resolved soon. I am grateful that the car comes with a great warranty, which gives me peace of mind. While I am second-guessing my decision to purchase this car over the reliable Toyota Highlander, I am hopeful that the service department will be able to address these issues.

  2. Nikolas Ward 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 2022

I hope you're doing well! It seems that the Telluride is a great car with many wonderful features and a cool design, all at a more than reasonable price point. However, some customers have reported issues with the drive quality and reliability, specifically with the engine and electronics. While this evidence is anecdotal, it's worth noting that two out of three people I know who own a 22 Telluride experienced engine failure before hitting 30k miles. I personally noticed a change in my engine around 20k miles and decided to sell my Telluride before any major repairs were needed (I had already paid two grand to replace the condenser less than three months after purchase). According to the mechanics at my dealership, this is becoming a real problem and they've had to buy back failed engine Tellurides from customers at cost. They currently have 9-10 Tellurides in the back of the dealer with failed engines, which is not a great sign. On the bright side, I was able to trade mine in for a profit and purchase a new truck. Overall, I would give the Telluride two stars for resale value.

  3. John Kutch 2025-02-10

    Vehicle year: 2020

Hello! I just wanted to share that my car has only 280 miles on it and I've had a bit of trouble turning it on twice now. It seems like the battery might not be working properly. I took it to the dealer, but unfortunately they couldn't find anything wrong. I'm keeping track of every time I turn on the car, but it's still hard to prove that there's an issue. Overall, I really love the interior of the vehicle and I'm hoping to get this issue resolved soon, especially since it's happening at less than 300 miles!

  4. Monserrate Beier 2025-02-04

    Vehicle year: 2020

Our radiator failed after just a week, and my wife and child were left stranded on the side of the freeway. Unfortunately, our experience with Kia customer service has been less than satisfactory. It seems that the dealer is unable to help and the main Kia customer service line is not much better. We are disappointed with the way we have been treated and regret our decision to purchase this car.

  5. Orin Toy 2025-02-03

    Vehicle year: 2022

This car has received mostly positive ratings, although it may not be perfect. Unfortunately, the customer service provided by KIA has been less than satisfactory. I had a minor issue soon after purchasing the car, and it has taken nearly a year to resolve. However, I am now the happy owner of a Subaru Ascent, and I am glad that everything worked out in the end. If it weren't for the warranty dispute, we may have never considered selling the car. In conclusion, please be cautious when dealing with KIA.

Latest positive Kia Telluride car reviews

  1. Lorenzo Sipes 2025-02-08

    Vehicle year: 2020

For me, what really matters in a vehicle is how well it drives. And the Telluride definitely delivers on that front. I've been driving mine for over 6 weeks now and every time I get behind the wheel, I feel relaxed and at ease. Whether I'm cruising in comfort mode or zipping through traffic in sport mode, the ride is always smooth and enjoyable. And for those who have criticized the Telluride's acceleration, it's important to remember that it's a 3 row SUV and not equipped with a hemi engine. But if you switch to sport mode, you'll find that there's plenty of acceleration to satisfy your need for speed (and you'll get better gas mileage too!). Speaking of acceleration, a co-worker once challenged me to a race in her supped up Dodge Durango with a hemi engine. I declined, but she still wanted to show off and took off like a rocket. I called her afterwards and joked that she probably burned a gallon of gas over that half mile. She retorted that her car ate mine for lunch, but I replied that I prefer my car to be more like a dessert - something to be savored and enjoyed. And that's exactly what the Telluride is - a pleasure to drive. I particularly appreciate the responsiveness of the steering and the tight turning radius. And when it comes to comfort, the leather seats in the EX model are noticeably more comfortable and supportive than the pleather seats in the LX and S models. My teenage kids were the first to notice this during our test drive, and I have to agree with them. Overall, if you're looking for a vehicle that's a joy to drive, I highly recommend the Telluride.I haven't had the chance to compare the leather seats in my EX to the napa leather seats in the SX prestige model, but my parents have driven my Telluride and I've sat in the second row myself. I found the second row to be just as comfortable as the first, which is saying something because the ride quality in the first row is excellent. One of my favorite features is the ventilated front seats, which have been a lifesaver during the hot Florida summer. The infotainment system is user-friendly, with both a touchscreen and buttons. The Telluride offers a lot of features for the price, especially compared to other midsize SUVs. The safety features are top-notch, with blind spot detection being my favorite. The lane keeping control while in cruise control is advanced, although I prefer to have control of the steering wheel myself. The adaptive cruise control works well, with the car slowing down and speeding up as needed. The intercom feature is a fun addition, and the AC works well in all rows. There are plenty of USB ports for everyone to use their gadgets during the ride. Gas mileage has been good, with the on-board computer slightly exaggerating the numbers. Over the last 4 fill-ups, I recorded 24.5 and 22.1 mpg in mostly city driving, and 27.5 and 25.9 mpg in mostly highway driving.I think the lower numbers in both sets of mpg may reflect my use of sport mode a little more often than comfort mode during those tanks. As I mentioned earlier, you don't get the acceleration of a Dodge with a hemi engine, but you're also not burning a gallon of gas every time you kick in the hemi engine. Overall, I'm happy with the gas mileage so far.

  2. Mark Durgan 2025-01-26

    Vehicle year: 2022

This is an updated review on my 2022 Kia Telluride SX. I am happy to report that it still runs, rides, and looks like new with 31000 miles on it. We absolutely love driving it everywhere and the ride quality is still superior. The Nappa Leather seats are as good as they get and the technology is still in perfect working order without a flaw! Every time someone rides in it, they can't help but comment on how nice it is. In my opinion, this Kia Telluride has been and still is the best vehicle I have ever purchased. My wife and I are now considering the 2023 Kia Sportage for her to purchase within the next year. As a car fanatic who takes car reviews very seriously, I can confidently say that the car business has been in my family for 3 generations, as my grandfather owned an Oldsmobile dealership and my father worked for G.M. all his life. Naturally, I inherited the same love for cars.

  3. Demarco Stehr 2025-01-22

    Vehicle year: 2021

I've been leasing my 2021 Glacial White Pearl SX Prestige since January 2021. After my test drive, it only had 21 miles on it. The price offered was $500 below MSRP, which was fantastic! You too can avoid paying the mark-up by waiting. Recently, I had my first 7500 mile service done at my local KIA Dealership. The full-synthetic oil change and tire rotation only cost me $66, which I think is reasonable. The 2021 Telluride SXP is a dream to drive. It's luxurious in every aspect, from the plush Nappa Leather to the micro-suede headliner and pillars, and even the leather heated steering wheel. Everything screams luxury, right down to the LED headlights and LED fog lights. I didn't care for the Nightfall package because I didn't like the rims that came with it. The black rims on the SX are gorgeous. However, I do agree with some of the other reviews regarding the 20The gradual slow down with adaptive CC is hardly noticeable. If traffic comes to a stop, the car will also come to a stop. Lane Change Assist does a great job keeping you centered in your lane, although it can be a bit creepy when it takes over the steering wheel going around a curve. The car easily seats 7 adults, although the third row is better suited for shorter people. The heated and cooled seats work exceptionally well, keeping you refreshingly cool in the summer and cozy warm in the winter. The ambient lighting is a nice touch, and I enjoy tinkering with the color schemes. However, it would be even cooler if there was an automatic rotation of light spectrum. While my 1 year trial subscription to UVO has ended, the SUV is still amazing. The recent changes to the talk to text feature are not very logical, as it is no longer hands-free. However, the rest of the car is still spot on. I have just over 12,000 miles on it after 14 months and I love driving it everywhere, although the 1000 miles per month lease limits my driving. She handles great in the snow, especially in snow mode. It does take quite some time for the interior to warm up on those freezing cold days, but thank goodness for the heated steering wheel! The 10 minutes of run time with the remote start aren't nearly enough to warm the windshield, let alone the interior, so it takes a good 20 minutes to be comfortable. This is my 2nd follow-up and I have to say that overall, I'm still very happy with my Telly. However, I did have to drop from 5 stars to 4 due to some minor issues. For instance, the memory seats wouldn't hold their 2 memory positions and the auto stop/start stopped working. While these issues were resolved, I wouldn't expect them to happen for a car that costs 50K. The transmission is still a bit annoying when going up hills, but it's something I can live with. On the bright side, traveling any long distances is still amazingly comfortable. Heading to Virginia Beach in June was a breeze! In fact, I love my Telly so much that I've decided to buy it when my lease is up in January 2024 since the residual value is $10k less than the actual Edmunds value. I did receive a Navigation Update USB from KIA, but unfortunately, it turned everything purple on my infotainment system and none of the map features are any different than before. We have a road that's been closed for over a year and the update still says that road is open. Some upgrade, huh?(Anyway, before I go through the buyout process, I'll need new tires to pass my NY State inspection. Although the tires aren't completely worn out, they just won't pass inspection. Maybe in a couple more months they will be. I can make that happen. Haha! I am also buying it because I really don't like the new front end of the 2024 Tellurides. Bring back the Onion Ring driving lights! The mileage is still the same. My road trip to Virginia Beach was so amazingly comfortable, too! That's it for this review!)

I have been driving GMC Yukons for the past 9 years, but I am thrilled to have switched to the Kia Telluride. The redesign looks super cool and trendy, and the technology and safety features for the price are fantastic. This car offers more than its luxury counterparts in the 3-row SUV category. I am very happy with our purchase!

My wife and I discussed and considered what type of vehicle would make our day-to-day life simpler, more convenient, and practical with our growing family. Ultimately, we decided on an SUV platform. It provides us with the flexibility to move around the family while traveling, shopping for groceries, running errands, and more. The Kia Nightfall Edition caught our eye and we were sold. The dealership's general manager even sweetened the deal by throwing in GAP insurance and a 10-year/100k bumper-to-bumper extended warranty. Since we've had it for over 3,000 miles, this vehicle has been nothing short of amazing. We got the Prestige package in addition to the already impressive list of luxury, safety, and tech features in the Kia Telluride AWD SX Nightfall Edition in Black Copper and we absolutely love it! We highly recommend this vehicle to anyone seriously in the market for a midsize SUV.
