The Kia Telluride is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2019. Positioned above the smaller Sorento, the Telluride was previewed as a concept car in 2016, with the production model debuting in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. It shares components and specifications with its sister model, the Hyundai Palisade, including its engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Named after the town of Telluride, Colorado, the Telluride is the largest vehicle Kia has manufactured in the United States.

Overview

The production version of the Telluride was launched at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January. Previously, the Telluride was displayed as a customized version inspired by fashion designer Brandon Maxwell's Texas-inspired collection, at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. The overall design is similar to the 2016 concept except for the front end which was completely redesigned.

The Telluride is the first Kia designed specifically for the US market, with the design work handled at the Kia Design Center in Irvine, California. The production version Telluride is powered by a 3.8-liter Lambda II V6 Atkinson cycle gasoline engine rated at 291 hp (295 PS; 217 kW) and 355 N⋅m (36.2 kg⋅m; 262 lb⋅ft), paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.

The Telluride features four drive modes – Smart, Eco, Sport and Comfort. Snow and AWD Lock modes are also available for specific driving conditions, and the on-demand electro-hydraulic AWD system with multi-plate clutch plate constantly redistributes power to both axles. In Eco and Smart modes, power is completely routed to the front wheels, whereas Sport mode splits the power down to 65 percent front, 35 percent rear.

The standard towing rate for this SUV is rated at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg), and it also features the optional self-levelling rear suspension where the ride height is automatically calibrated depending on vehicle load to optimise control and stability.

The Telluride is not marketed in South Korea as it is only produced in the United States, whereas its Hyundai counterpart, the Korean-built Palisade is marketed there instead. Exports from the West Point, Georgia plant to the Middle East started in February 2019. Kia limited exports of the Telluride to around 3,000 units annually.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 5XYP3DHC5NG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Sunroof is stuck in an open position unable to be closed. Upon attempting to open the sunroof, the deflector snapped off the assembly and the sunroof track broke. Took car to dealership (Raceway Kia, 4044 US-9, Freehold, NJ 07728) for service. Dealership indicated the sunroof is beyond repair and requires installation of an entirely brand new sunroof assembly at a cost of $5730 because it occurred outside the warranty (warranty expired at 60,000 miles and the car had 70,463 miles when sunroof broke). They were unable to manually close the sunroof as a temporary solution. Therefore, the sunroof remains open due to the broken track and is covered with plastic to avoid the elements. There were no prior symptoms indicating that the sunroof would break in this way. In fact, in three years of ownership, the sunroof was rarely used and only opened a handful of times before breaking. At this time of this writing, the sunroof is available for inspection while I look for more economical means of repair versus the dealership's plan to replace the entire assembly.

  • Summary: One morning when I went to get into my car I noticed a large crack approximately 12in in length across my windshield. There had been no noticeable chips in the windshield prior and there was no sign of being hit of any kind. I took the car to be looked at by a family member in glass and he said the issue is a manufacturing issue and the glass is thin and unsafe. The dealer said they won’t replace because it isn’t in the date range involved in the class action lawsuit. Since this I have had several more chips and the crack now runs all the way across the glass and extends up and down

  • Summary: Paint peeling from 2020 Kia Telluride. It seems to be a known issue with many Kia Telluride owners experiencing the same paint defects. This is a serious quality issue, I've had many vehicles for 10+ years and never experienced the issues I'm having with this car. The car has under 50000 miles and for it to be peeling like this seems to be a manufacture defect. Kia has refused to fix the issue as they claim its not under warranty.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
  • VIN: 5XYP34HC0MG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have it so the doors do not automatically unlock when I arrive somewhere. When I arrive at a destination and put the car in park, the people in the backseat cannot pull the handle to get out. If the child safety lock (which is a button on the door handle with the window and lock buttons) is ON, the back windows and the door latches do NOT work. If the child safety lock is OFF, the windows work but the door still cannot be opened using the latch. This seems like a safety issue to me, since most people will reach for the latch in an emergency, but they can't get out. I have to push the unlock button form the driver door. If it is pushed on the front passenger door, it will not unlock the back doors.

  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5XYP64HC4LG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: We contacted Kia US after taking the Kia Telluride to a Kia service station for an oil change. The service tech told us that they were not going to do an oil change because,”the Telluride was a ticking time bomb.” This was said in front of the Kia service Mgr.We were very nervous driving the vehicle because no one explained what that meant.Shortly after the service appointment, the Telluride’s engine caught on fire.We call Kia US that same day to open up a case.We explained all the issues we had with the Telluride (windshield issues, headlight issues, main display screen issues, luggage rack issues, sunroof, drive shaft, wiper fluid filter issues), to include the engine. After paying an attorney to provide all documents that Kia US requested from us, including every oil change receipt for the Telluride, Kia US only offered to only pay for the parts for the driveshaft/engine fire issues. To make matters worse, the Kia service department said that the 100+ parts needed to repair the engine, were on back order. Our Telluride’s engine caught fire in April and Kia US has done nothing for us, even though the issues are under 2 recalls. This is unacceptable for a manufacturer to ignore recalls, especially when it comes to the safety of people, families and children. We contacted Kia US for 6 months with no help from them. We sent registered/certified letters to Kia US executives, legal Dept, Kia Finance and the last communication from Kia US was that they are not doing anything for us- no repairs for the recalls, even though we mentioned the recalls associated with our Vin/Telluride. They are completely disregarding the entire situation. Since then, we have had to find another option for transportation since we have been without the Telluride for 6 months. Kia US needs to take back the Telluride and either provide us with a safe/working vehicle or reimburse us for what we have spent on the Telluride. Thank you for your assistance. Latest negative Kia Telluride car reviews

  1. Hilbert McCullough 2025-06-21

    Vehicle year: 2023

Hey there! I noticed that Kia mentions a 5500lbs towing capacity with self leveling suspension and trailer bread controls, but did you know that there isn't a factory trailer hitch or bumper cover available? I reached out to customer service and unfortunately, they couldn't give me an ETA on when it will be available. This might be frustrating for people like us who just need a hitch to haul a bike rack. Let's hope they release it soon!

  2. Rafael Brakus 2025-06-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

Although the Telluride is a perfect size and rides great, I have unfortunately experienced some issues with the blind spot detector, which has required me to take the car to the shop four times. Despite this, I still love the car when all of its features are working properly. I did have an emergency situation when the car wouldn't start and the dealership did not respond to my calls for two days. However, I was able to get help from a roadside service. Overall, I remain confident in the quality of the Telluride and look forward to resolving these issues.

  3. Emory Mertz 2025-06-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

The 2021 Telluride has a known issue with drive line vibration caused by a faulty driveshaft. Despite initial resistance from KIA, I was able to secure approval for a new driveshaft and coupler from my dealer. Although there was a delay in receiving the parts, I have now been scheduled for installation on 7/22/21 at 1:30 pm. As a knowledgeable and experienced driver, I am confident that this repair will resolve the issue. It is important to be aware of this issue when considering purchasing a Telluride.

  4. Chadrick Wiegand 2025-06-14

    Vehicle year: 2023

KIA has created a fantastic SUV with impressive towing power, cooling, and weight capacity of up to 5500 lbs. However, there seems to be an issue with the wiring harness that prevents owners from legally hooking up a trailer. Despite having Tow Mode, it has been 8 months and KIA has yet to produce the necessary part to allow owners to use any trailer legally. KIA is aware of the issue, as seen in this forum post: https://tellurideforum.org/threads/the-2023-telluride-towing-saga-adding-some-data-and-pictures-and-its-not-great-news.13276/page-14. If towing is not a priority for you, then the KIA SUV is still a great choice.

  5. Issac Schultz 2025-06-08

    Vehicle year: 2021

The rear seat backs should be checked for faulty trim, as well as the electronics, specifically the turn signal cameras. It has come to my attention that the left turn signal image in the dash rolls like a film stuck on rerun, which is not acceptable for a car that costs over $55K. Although I have only driven 200 miles, I am confident that these issues can be resolved by the dealership. As a consumer, I expect a high level of initial quality and I trust that Kia will deliver on that expectation. I have reported the issue with the left blind spot camera and the missing hard backing on part of the third row seat to the dealership and I am confident that they will take the necessary steps to address these concerns. I am disappointed that these issues have arisen, but I am confident that they will be resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner. I remain committed to my dream car and look forward to enjoying it for years to come.

Latest positive Kia Telluride car reviews

  1. Vladimir Bauch 2025-06-21

    Vehicle year: 2020

I've been researching cars for years, and after pouring over specs, comparisons, prices, and features, I can confidently say that you won't find more bang for your buck than with the Telluride. Personally, I would have been satisfied with a 7-passenger S trim, but the SX has everything I could ever want in a car. The Kia app is also amazing; I can set the climate to my exact specifications from my phone. I love everything about it. With three kids, I was pleased to find ample personal space for each of them, and I can easily fit a week's worth of groceries in the back. The safety features are unbeatable, and the car can even drive itself. My husband and I are different heights, but we both find the Telluride roomy, comfortable, and stylish. I have zero regrets about my purchase. If you buy something else, you'll probably still be thinking about the Telluride, but if you buy a Telluride, you'll forget about other cars.

  2. Deangelo Leffler 2025-06-21

    Vehicle year: 2022

I had been eyeing this car for some time after reading all the great reviews. Unfortunately, a mechanical problem with my former car forced me to buy when inventory was almost nonexistent and dealers were charging a premium. However, I am pleased to say that I love everything about the car, especially all the included safety features. Although, I was a little disappointed that it did not come with appointments that are standard on cars that cost way less, such as memory seats and fog lights. Nevertheless, I can live without these, but I believe they should be included in the base model rather than the highest trim package. Overall, I highly recommend this car, but I suggest waiting for prices to normalize and dealer inventory to improve before getting the SX fully loaded. You will be very happy with your purchase.

  3. Carmel Kohler 2025-06-19

    Vehicle year: 2021

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up that some dealers might try to markup your vehicle by as much as $10,000! But don't worry, you can always shop around and don't be afraid to walk out if you need to. Take care!

  4. Darrel Mayert 2025-06-19

    Vehicle year: 2022

I took the car for a ride and, as advertised, it had all the technology one would expect. The ride was good and it handled very well. The only issue I had was with the price offered, which was best I could see was about $12,000 above MSRP. I guess they can get it since they are in short supply, but not from me. I would definitely recommend the car if you're paying MSRP.

  5. Kris Kuhlman 2025-06-13

    Vehicle year: 2020

I've been driving my Kia Telluride S-Trim for about 6 months now and have already put on 11K miles. I must say, it's easily the best vehicle I've ever owned. Every day, I look forward to getting behind the wheel and enjoying the ride. The car is incredibly quiet, even with a 6 cyl., 291hp engine. The hum of the pistons firing and the rev of the engine upon acceleration are just background noise that adds to the enjoyable experience. The wind noise is also cut down to the point that I can't hear it with the radio set to a fairly quiet level. The car absorbs much of the road, so when I do feel a small imperfection while moving along, it's easily the exception and not the rule. The tight steering and the feel of the steering wheel itself give the driver a wonderfully luxurious feel that really is not easily surpassed. It's a great ride. I chose the S-trim for several different reasons. The 20In addition, the Idle Stop/Go feature is supposed to save gas, which is great for those drivers who can adapt to the engine turning off then back on only moments later. However, I personally found it difficult to get used to even after 5 months and 10K miles. There are certain parameters that need to be met for it to activate, too many to list, and it still seems to be so random that I found myself asking why it activated (or not) at certain times and not others. Additionally, in the heat of the summer, when the Idle Stop/Go was activated, the A/C turned very warm, which is not ideal if you are in traffic on a super hot day. I wish the default setting was off, not on, but that is a government thing, not a Kia thing. On the other hand, the forward collision warning system is great, although a little too sensitive. I have experienced a number of occasions when it chimed thinking that I was about to hit a car in front of me, when, at least to me, there was no danger. It is a fairly large SUV with 2 fairly large blind spots on either side, so the blind spot warning system is fantastic and has definitely warned me from making a potentially big mistake. Lastly, the automatic cruise control is unbelievably precise in both staying true to the lane and keeping a good distance from the car in front.
