2024 Kia Telluride problems
The Kia Telluride is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2019. Positioned above the smaller Sorento, the Telluride was previewed as a concept car in 2016, with the production model debuting in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. It shares components and specifications with its sister model, the Hyundai Palisade, including its engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Named after the town of Telluride, Colorado, the Telluride is the largest vehicle Kia has manufactured in the United States.
Overview
The production version of the Telluride was launched at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January. Previously, the Telluride was displayed as a customized version inspired by fashion designer Brandon Maxwell's Texas-inspired collection, at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. The overall design is similar to the 2016 concept except for the front end which was completely redesigned.
The Telluride is the first Kia designed specifically for the US market, with the design work handled at the Kia Design Center in Irvine, California. The production version Telluride is powered by a 3.8-liter Lambda II V6 Atkinson cycle gasoline engine rated at 291 hp (295 PS; 217 kW) and 355 N⋅m (36.2 kg⋅m; 262 lb⋅ft), paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.
The Telluride features four drive modes – Smart, Eco, Sport and Comfort. Snow and AWD Lock modes are also available for specific driving conditions, and the on-demand electro-hydraulic AWD system with multi-plate clutch plate constantly redistributes power to both axles. In Eco and Smart modes, power is completely routed to the front wheels, whereas Sport mode splits the power down to 65 percent front, 35 percent rear.
The standard towing rate for this SUV is rated at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg), and it also features the optional self-levelling rear suspension where the ride height is automatically calibrated depending on vehicle load to optimise control and stability.
The Telluride is not marketed in South Korea as it is only produced in the United States, whereas its Hyundai counterpart, the Korean-built Palisade is marketed there instead. Exports from the West Point, Georgia plant to the Middle East started in February 2019. Kia limited exports of the Telluride to around 3,000 units annually.

Common 2024 Kia Telluride problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2024 Kia Telluride, several common problems have been highlighted:
- False Advertising of Self-Leveling Suspension:
- Some owners have expressed disappointment with the self-leveling rear suspension advertised for the Telluride, claiming that it does not function as expected. Instead of true self-leveling capabilities, it was described as merely having a stronger shock and spring setup.
- Grill Vulnerability to Damage:
- Another common complaint revolves around the design of the grill, which has been reported to be flawed and susceptible to allowing rocks to penetrate it. This issue raises concerns about potential damage to the air conditioning unit due to the grill's vulnerability.
- Transmission Issues:
- Owners have raised complaints about transmission problems, such as lunging during shifting, leading to the need for a new transmission. The extended waiting time for transmission replacement has been a significant inconvenience for affected owners.
- Parts Availability and Repair Time:
- There have been concerns about the availability of parts for the Telluride, with reports indicating that owners could face extended periods without their vehicle if repairs are needed. Waiting times of up to six months for repairs have been mentioned, highlighting potential delays in addressing issues.
These complaints shed light on various aspects of the 2024 Kia Telluride that have caused dissatisfaction among owners. From towing limitations to transmission issues and delays in repairs, these problems highlight areas where the vehicle may fall short of expectations.

- Summary: Subject: Urgent Safety Concern Regarding 2024 Kia Telluride – Defective Trim/Molding Adhesive Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), I am writing to report a significant safety concern regarding my 2024 Kia Telluride. Specifically, the horizontal trim/molding located under the windows has defective adhesive, causing these pieces to detach from the vehicle. I am deeply concerned that if these pieces fall off while I am driving, especially on the highway, they could potentially strike another vehicle, leading to an accident. I have brought this issue to the attention of Kia, and they are aware of the problem. In fact, the necessary parts are currently on back order, which indicates that Kia recognizes the widespread nature of the defect. However, despite this acknowledgment, no interim solution has been provided. At this point, I have had to resort to using tape, at my own expense, to temporarily secure the trim pieces and prevent them from falling off. This situation is not only an inconvenience but also poses a serious safety risk to myself and others on the road. My question is: who would bear the liability if a piece were to detach and cause damage or injury to another driver? I believe that Kia, knowing about this defect, should be taking proactive measures to prevent such incidents from occurring. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this issue, as it needs to be escalated due to the potential danger it presents to public safety. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your prompt response.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15

I immediately looked at the instrument panel confused and the fuel gauge had no illumination as if the tank was completely empty and miles to empty showed 121. I turned off the vehicle, waited a minute and turned it back on. Again, the low fuel warning appeared, no illumination on the fuel gauge and this time the miles to empty was a dash line. I parked the vehicle nervous to drive it anywhere in this condition. I checked it again in a couple of hours with the same result. I put 1 liter of gas in the tank and the errors disappeared and the fuel gauge now shows half tank and 140 miles to empty. There is definitely something wrong somewhere.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: 5XYP64GCXRG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Kia has failed to remedy this in a timely manner. From the day I called to schedule when I received recall, appt was 3 weeks out. Kia then cancelled the appt and when I asked why they said they needed VIN to order part which I provided and they rescheduled the appt. I showed up for appt and they said they needed to look at car for which part (which they were to order a week prior when I provided vin and recall info). Stated it would be a week and they’d have the part and it fixed. Now are saying they have no clue when they can get us in and are not telling us if they have the part or not. This is our only vehicle and cannot drive it as it states it can catch on fire parked or while driving. I have two small children, one with medical needs. We need our vehicle and when I explained this to Kia Diehl in hermitage the manager laughed in my face. Every time I call it’s a different story. Kia is refusing to fix in a timely manner or provided rentals. I am making my car payment on a brand new 2024 vehicle that I cannot drive without reimbursement or able to receive service for a vehicle that can catch on fire. We have contacted the Kia Diehl parts 3x with no returned call on an update on when the part will be in. We were told today even if they had the part they have no upcoming appts open to fix it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
- VIN: 5XYP3DGCXRG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I took delivery of my new Telluride on 9/27/2023. On 11/22/2023 I started getting a warning message on my dashboard that my battery was discharging due to external electrical devices. There was nothing on in the vehicle, nor was there anything plugged into the vehicle. This message would come up after the vehicle had been sitting for a number of hours. This message came on on 4 or 5 different occasions. Then on 11/29/2023 my entire dashboard went blank. Nothing would show on it, not even the speedometer. The car was running, and everything else was working fine. I called the dealership where I bought the vehicle and I was able to get it in that day. I picked up the vehicle the next day. It was some sort of computer problem and they were able to fix it quickly. What makes me most irritated is it happened when my vehicle was less than 2 months old. And my son and daughter-in-law also bought a Telluride at the same time as I did, and they just had to bring it in to the dealership for the exact same issue. Two out of two vehicles with that same issue is scary, and very frustrating that we spend that much money on a vehicle and it has these types of computer problems before they are even a year old. Including the safety recall that has been issued for the vehicle, another computer problem.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-18
- VIN: 5XYP64GC5RG
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I bought a Kia Telluride on [XXX]. I drove it to Michigan on [XXX]. During the trip, a highway pebble kicked up from the tire of a truck in front of me and hit the windshield. The chip from the rock cracked the windshield from the passenger side to the driver side of the vehicle in a matter of minutes. I researched this Kia Telluride windshield incident via the internet, and there is evidence that it is due to manufacturer negligence. The windshield is defective, and a class action lawsuit has been filed. In 2020, Kia even sent letters to owners offering to correct the problem. The windshield failed and it is available for inspection. The crack in the windshield is a visual impairment for the driver. The problem hasn't been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or mechanic. The vehicle component hasn't been inspected by the manufacturer or others. There were no warning lights or messages. What a great car! It's so comfortable and drives really nicely. The ride is so smooth and I absolutely love the self-dimming headlights.

I recently purchased a 2023 Telluride with the SX Prestige Package and added the X-Line. It has been running great with no problems, even after turning 8K miles. Although I requested a hitch, it was taken off the order due to KIA not providing the wiring harness because of fires. However, I was able to find out that a new hitch and wiring harness is now available from KIA, along with a fascia for the bumper where the cutout should be. Additionally, there is a replacement power latch that prevents the tailgate from opening by itself. I tried to get the new latch separately, but was told that it was included with the new wiring and tow package and cannot be purchased separately. The complete tow package costs $798.00 with about 4 hours of labor, making the total cost close to $2000.00. Although the dealer wouldn't budge on the price after buying a $53K vehicle, I contacted another dealer and was able to purchase the wiring harness and replacement power latch for a penny. I'm currently out about $148.00, but it was worth it. All I need now is to buy the hitch and my body shop will gladly install everything. While the parts are expensive, I was able to find a dealer who prices their products about one third of the cost. KIA parts are marked up by dealers at a whopping 50 percent.
-
Love everything about it! The handling, power, smooth ride, quiet cabin, nice interior, and of course, the body styling.
-
We are thrilled with our new ride. This vehicle offers even more than our previous SUV.
-
If you drive frequently in traffic and are in search of a midsize SUV, this car offers excellent driver technology-assistance and provides a very comfortable ride.

I was impressed with this vehicle when we got it last year. However, after having it for 15 months, it seems to be consuming oil. I have put in 4 quarts of oil with only 12000 miles. The Kia dealer I take it to insists this is normal, which I totally disagree with. It is concerning that most owners don't even check their oil levels. Some owners are now facing lawsuits because Kia is blaming them for a damaged engine. Buyers should be aware that this is a great vehicle that performs very nicely. However, Kia is aware of this problem and has yet to do the right thing to fix it. Personally, I had two Sorentos (2017-2020) which never needed any additional oil.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2023 Telluride that my mother recently purchased. I had the opportunity to drive it extensively during my two-week visit with her. Unfortunately, I found that the driver's seat caused me some discomfort and even left me with a bruise on my midback/spine. Despite adjusting the seat as best I could, I still experienced some discomfort during the several 6+ hour trips I took in the car. For context, I'm 6'2 and 230 pounds, and I consider myself an athlete. Thanks for listening!

But it won't go away. You were told to bring it to a dealer 40+ miles away and they would fix it. However, the sales rep said that you can't turn it off. I can understand your frustration, but I'm sure there must be a solution to this problem. Has anyone else with a 2023 Telluride experienced and resolved this issue?
