2004 Kia Sorento problems
The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.
First generation (BL; 2002)
2002–2006
Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2004 Kia Sorento problems
The Kia Sorento 2004 is a popular SUV known for its off-road capabilities and spacious interior. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported over the years.
One of the most common problems with the Kia Sorento 2004 is related to the fuel injection system, particularly in diesel models. Service experts have noted instances of fuel injectors malfunctioning, especially when the fuel filter is not replaced in a timely manner. This can lead to damaged injectors, which can affect the longevity of the powertrain. Proper maintenance is crucial to avoid this issue, including regular oil changes and timely replacement of the fuel filter
Another common problem with the Kia Sorento 2004 is related to the differential system. If the front and rear tires are of different sizes, it can cause uneven tire wear and damage to the differential. The basic drive of the Sorento is on the rear wheels, but if there is a reason to switch on the front-wheel drive, the system automatically transmits power to the front wheels. However, if the tires are of different dimensions, the system can recognize slipping and activate four-wheel driving, leading to overloading of the entire system
The Kia Sorento 2004 also has issues with the four-wheel drive system. The system is sensitive to different tire dimensions, and if the tires are of different sizes, it can cause the system to activate four-wheel driving unnecessarily, leading to overloading of the system. This can be a significant problem, especially in off-road conditions where the system is designed to provide extra traction and stability
Additionally, the 2004 Kia Sorento has a known weak point in the coolant system, a plastic Y fitting that can fail and cause coolant leaks. This can lead to engine overheating and expensive repairs if not addressed promptly.
Finally, like most cars with timing belts, a failed timing belt can be very costly in the Kia Sorento 2004. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of the timing belt can help prevent this issue and ensure the longevity of the engine.
In conclusion, while the Kia Sorento 2004 is a reliable and capable SUV, it is not without its share of common problems. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes, timely replacement of the fuel filter and timing belt, and careful attention to tire dimensions, can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.
What is the biggest problem with Kia Sorento?

How many miles can a 2004 Kia Sorento last?
The life expectancy for the 2004 Kia Sorento depends on how well it is taken care of. If You take good care of the car and follow the maintenance schedule then it should last around 200,000 to over 400,000 miles or so.
Is the Kia Sorento a reliable car?
Quality and Reliability 81.0/100

I purchased my 2004 Sorento LX in 2010 with 65,000 miles on it. Since then, I have put 65,000 miles on it and have had to perform some routine maintenance, including fixing the crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump, fuel injectors, radiator, and valve cover gasket. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get an Aisin transmission, which is the same one found in the '04 Tacoma. I must say, this car is a fantastic stealth off-roader! It has great ground clearance, true 4wd with a low range, body on frame setup with a solid rear axle, and good power. I have a lot of fun with it!

I've owned my Kia for almost 5 years now and it's been quite a ride. I really enjoyed driving it, especially considering the reasonable price I paid for it. Unfortunately, I had to replace my headlights and tail lights twice a year, and the A/C never worked properly, which was a real issue living in AZ. Despite taking it to the dealership, they were never able to fix it, so I eventually gave up. Over the last two years, I've had to spend a lot of money on repairs, and unfortunately, none of it was covered by the warranty. I'm worried that I'll have to spend even more in the near future, so I've decided it's time to say goodbye. Dealing with the dealership was a bit of a joke, and the overall cost of owning this vehicle was much higher than I had anticipated.

I have 78K miles on my 2004 Sorento and have had great luck with the engine, as well as the original brakes and tires, which both lasted 75K miles. However, I have had to replace the front headlights 9 times, despite trying different bulb types and replacing them both at the same time while wearing gloves. It has been a frustrating experience, but I am confident that I will find a solution.

This is the second KIA that my family owns and we love both of them. In terms of gas mileage, I found that the Ford Explorer with a V6 engine and the Chevrolet Trail Blazer get similar mileage to the Sedona and Sorento, which is about 15 to 20 miles per gallon, which is average for a V6. It's worth noting that the V6 in the KIA is larger than most.

The vehicle ran great during our test drive, but unfortunately, we have had a bit of a downhill battle since then. We paid over $26K in cash for the car and have spent in excess of $5K on repairs that were not covered by the warranty. We have had some issues with gas mileage, only getting 12 to 15 mpg, and the heater and air conditioner have never worked properly. The car also stalls without warning, and unfortunately, the mechanics at the certified dealerships have not been able to fix the issues. They have told us that certain parts are not covered, but we need to pay another $600 for a check-up. We are hoping to take legal action against these issues and would appreciate any help in finding an attorney to take on the case. We believe that the dealerships and their mechanics are at fault, and the booklet that came with the vehicle was extremely misleading.

If you enjoy off-roading, this is a great vehicle to have fun with. It has been very reliable for me, with 70000 miles and still going strong. I did have one issue where the crank position sensor broke and left me stranded, but KIA was quick to send a tow vehicle and help me out within 30 minutes. The 4wd low is incredibly powerful and I have no problem keeping up with the big boys. I only wish there were more performance parts available.

I purchased my 2004 Kia Sorento in July 2009 and unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The bolt has fallen off three times, but thankfully the first two times it was covered under warranty. After the second repair by Sports Auto World in Bourne, I noticed a burning smell and took it to the dealer, but unfortunately, they were no longer in business. Despite this setback, Executive Kia in New Bedford, MA was able to help me and diagnosed the issue as the Main Gasket. Although I was concerned about the bolt issue, they assured me that everything was fine. Unfortunately, the car died just three days later and they claim they did not touch it. While it is disappointing that this issue is not covered under warranty, I understand that replacing the bolt repeatedly is not a reasonable expense. It is frustrating to have experienced these issues within a year of owning the car.

The recent recalls for faulty engine bolts and induction replacement valves have been frustrating, and the service at the dealership has not been up to par. However, I believe in holding companies accountable for their actions and I encourage you to take your vehicle to the dealer to have these issues addressed. While my personal experience with the service department was not ideal, I am confident that the dealership will take the necessary steps to ensure customer satisfaction. It's important to do your research and make informed decisions when purchasing a vehicle. I wish you the best of luck in finding the right SUV for your needs.
