The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.
First generation (BL; 2002)

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2005 Kia Sorento problems
The Kia Sorento 2005 model year has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to engine issues and faulty parts.

A rubbing or grinding noise while driving can be an issue with the driveshaft, which cannot be repaired and requires a complete drive shaft replacement.

- Summary: The battery fails constantly, which means I am faced with a dead battery and a car that won't start. This has happened with no pattern of circumstance; for example: the battery will be dead after driving for 15 miles, parking for 10 minutes while shopping, and returning to a dead battery; or after the car has been parked all day, only to have a dead battery; or a dead battery after being parked at my house overnight (in every sort of weather condition); it is completely random...and, be assured, I do not leave ANY ELECTRICAL items (radio, temperature controls, interior or exterior lights, etc.), turned on when I park my car. Therefore, I do not feel safe driving and parking my car ANYWHERE that I am remote, isolated, or unable to get a jump. I carry jumper cables in my car at all times because I never know when I may need them. Sometimes, it takes a long time to charge the battery enough to even start my car. Sometimes the battery is so dead, that the key fob doesn't even work and I have to manually open my doors...other times it's a quick jump. I have to always park my car in a position that I'm able to access the battery for a jump, if need be. I regularly went through (high-end) batteries well before their expiration date and took my SUV into the KIA dealership for diagnostics regularly - and the only answer they had is that the cause must be a "phantom (electrical) draw," which they were never able to identify. I also took my SUV into other mechanics and battery specialists, but no one had any answers for me. Still, after 17 years, I have this same problem and burn through a lot of batteries. No answers. The dealership stopped assisting me, even when I was still on my extended warranty. No help from Corporate. Very disappointed in KIA in their response over all these years, beginning with my purchase of the brand new 2005 KIA Sorento. I have always taken my SUV into the KIA dealership for the regularly scheduled service. Have others had this problem?

I HAD MY CHILDREN CALL OUR INSURANCE COMPANY FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND THEY COULDN'T FIX IT OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE IT WAS THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT. HE GOT THEM SAFELY TO PEPBOYS AND THEY HAD TO SPEND THE NIGHT IN NORTH CAROLINA AND THE NEXT DAY PEPBOYS CONFIRMED IT WAS THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT. I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A LAWSUIT CONCERNING THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT. PEPBOYS SAID IT WOULD BE $2000 TO FIX. I CALLED KIA ON 13 AUGUST 18 AND THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT AND WOULD CALL IN A COUPLE DAYS. THEY ARE STILL GIVING ME THE RUN AROUND. THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS INVOLVED IN A LAWSUIT AND IT CONCERNS SAFETY. PLEASE HELP ME HOLD KIA ACCOUNTABLE. THEY KNOW THIS IS A DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. THIS CAUSES THE TRUCK TO CUT OUT BETWEEN 3RD AND 4TH GEAR CONSISTENTLY WHEN ASCENDING OR DESCENDING STEEP MOUNTAIN PASSES AT HIGH ALTITUDE. AS THERE WAS NO ADVANCE WARNING OF FAILURE OF SHIFT KIT TO DOWNSHIFT, BRAKES HAD TO BE USED ON ICY ROADS TO SLOW AN UNDERPOWERED/OVERWEIGHTED TRUCK. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS ISSUE REQUIRING EXPERT DRIVING SKILLS TO NAVIGATE AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED, BUT WAS NOT, BY KIA MOTORS AS A REFUND OF PURCHASE PRICE AND RECALL OF TRUCKS. THE FILES REGARDING THIS PROBLEM AND OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE ARE SO VAST THEY WOULD CRASH YOUR SYSTEM. I HAVE THEM IF NEEDED AND CAN PROVIDE HARD COPIES AS THE STACK IS ABOUT 3 INCHES DEEP AND SPANS 11 YEARS. I HAVE 2 KEY FACTORS THAT ARE ALSO FACTORS HERE. !. I AM THE DAUGHTER OF A RACE CAR DRIVER AND SKILLED AT NAVIGATING CAR ISSUES. 2. I HAVE BEEN VERY ILL FOR A DECADE AND UNABLE TO WORK SO HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN THE REFUSAL OF KIA TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE AS I AM UNABLE TO SELL THE CAR. I WOULD FEEL IT UNCONSCIONABLE TO PASS THESE ISSUES ON TO ANOTHER LESS CAPABLE DRIVER. NEEDLESS TO SAY IT HAS BEEN ENORMOUS STRESS TO OWN THIS DEFECTIVE CAR AND STRESS TO TRY TO GET KIA MOTORS TO STEP UP TO THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THEIR WARRANTIES, AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION GUARANTEES IN SPITE OF THE PROBLEMS BEING APPARENT ALMOST FROM POINT OF SALE.

ALL ISSUES ARE AS DOCUMENTED BY THE HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS BY OTHER OWNERS WHO ARE WAITING FOR AN INVESTIGATION, A RECALL, OR ENOUGH DEATHS AND INJURIES TO RECEIVE ANY ASSISTANCE OF ANY KIND FROM THIS ORGANIZATION OR THE MANUFACTURER. PERHAPS A PUBLIC SAKE... $1 PER MINUTE TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO BASH A KIA (SLEDGEHAMMER PROVIDED). PROCEEDS WILL BE APPLIED TO PURCHASE OF REPLACEMENT VEHICLE, WHICH WILL NOT BE A KIA.

- Summary: COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 50 MPH. REPAIR SHOP INFORMS THAT THE TRAILING ARM SUPPORT BRACKETS AND REAR OF THE FRAME ARE SO BADLY CORRODED THAT THE AXLE WAS DISLODGED FROM THE FRAME. THE MOVEMENT OF THE AXLE SEVERED A BRAKE LINE, WHICH IS SECURED TO THE CROSS MEMBER STRUCTURE. CORROSION WAS FROM THE INSIDE OUT. ON VISUAL INSPECTION THE METAL IN THE CROSS MEMBER AND BRACKETS APPEARED TO BE SOUND, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO PEAL AWAY THE STRUCTURE WITH OUR FINGERS. THIS TYPE OF CORROSION BEGINS YEARS BEFORE FAILURE.

With a value package that includes more standard features than any of the competition, quality ratings handed down from Kia's parent company - up and coming Hyundai, an unheard-of 60K mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, industry-leading 100K mile powertrain warranty, unique styling dubbing the Sorento as the 'baby Lexus RX 300', and a price that will turn your head, buyers remorse is a thing of the past. I love the fact that you don't see too many Sorentos on the road. Everyone keeps asking me what it is, or thinks I'm driving an exotic!

Good vehicle for the money. It's fun to drive, quiet and so far seems durable. Although it could do better on fuel economy, it's still a great choice. I wish the steering wheel controls were lighted, but overall it's a great car.

The vehicle is great in deep snow! However, I did experience a 4WD failure once at about 40,000 miles and now the cruise has failed at 51,000. Nonetheless, it is more stable than any other 4WD that I have had, and I do drive a lot of interstate at 65 mpg. One other issue I have encountered is that the rear tailgate door is a bit tricky to close with the pull-down handle on the inside.

I recently purchased my Kia Sorento in November. Although it had 70,000 miles on it, it came with a good history and was well maintained. I drove it from Indiana to upstate NY with all six pieces of luggage and I can't say anything negative about this car. I am currently testing it on snow and so far, it's performing well. However, I do have to agree that it's disappointing that Kia has voided my warranty simply because I am the second owner. Regardless, 100,000 miles of warranty is still 100,000 miles of warranty.

This is the best SUV for the money! It comes with all the features you could want in a vehicle without going overboard. While gas mileage, like all SUVs, is not great, it's important to keep in mind that this is a common issue with SUVs. Some minor complaints about this SUV include weak rear speakers and a shallow driver's floorboard for those with bigger feet. However, overall, it's still the best SUV for the money!

This vehicle has had some issues, particularly with its electrical system. However, all maintenance has been done on or before its due, and the car has been taken to the dealer for repairs when necessary. While there have been some problems with the A/C and the headlights and taillights, these issues have been addressed and resolved. The car experiences occasional loss of power and transmission issues, but these are not major concerns. Although the factory radio did die shortly after purchase, overall the car is reliable and well-maintained. While the resale value may not be as high as some other models, it is still a good investment.

I have spent over $6000 on maintenance and service for my car, not to mention the rental car expenses due to the numerous times it has been in the shop. I have had to replace various parts such as headlights, brake lights, parking lights, dome lights, fog lights, interior lights, timing belt, AC parts, brakes, power seat motor, power locks, radio, battery, and car alarm parts. Although this SUV has wonderful bells and whistles, I must say that it has been an irresponsible and disappointing product. Unfortunately, the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty is useless and misleading, and the resale value is awful. I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle, regardless of the price!

The 2005 Sorento we purchased had some issues with the brakes, rotors, and motor, which were promptly addressed by the dealership. However, we experienced some recurring problems with the lights and oil leaks, which were also resolved. Despite these challenges, we appreciate the durability of the car and the support provided by the dealership. We remain confident in our decision to purchase a Kia.

I would recommend avoiding this car. The service department is unreliable and difficult to find. Additionally, the electrical system has caused several issues with the car's features. The door locks can be temperamental and the warning bell sometimes goes off for no reason. The car's fuel efficiency is also not very good. Overall, I would suggest looking for a different option.
