1995 Nissan 240sx problems

nissan logo

The Nissan 240SX is a sports compact car that was introduced to the North American market by Nissan in 1989 for the 1990 model year. It replaced the outgoing 200SX (S12) model. Most of the 240SXs were equipped with the 2.4-liter inline 4 engine (KA24E from 1989 to 1990 and KA24DE from 1990 to 1998). The KA24E had single overhead cams and the KA24DE had dual overhead cams. Two distinct generations of the 240SX, the S13 (1989–1994) the S14 (1994-1998) were produced, based on the Nissan S platform.

The 240SX is closely related to other S platform based vehicles, such as the Japanese-market Silvia and 180SX, and the European-market 200SX. Although their names are similar, the 240SX is unrelated to the 240Z or the 280ZX.

The 240SX is known for its popularity within drifting and tuner culture. However, due to the popularity of the S-chassis in drifting and related competitions, prices for vehicles and parts have greatly increased due to higher demand. This problem is sometimes known as "drift tax".

Common 1995 Nissan 240sx problems

The Nissan 240SX, produced in 1995, is known for several common problems that owners frequently report. This article will discuss three of the most prevalent issues: checking valve clearance, misfiring, and vacuum leaks.

Checking Valve Clearance

Valve clearance is an essential aspect of maintaining the Nissan 240SX. This issue has been reported by nine owners, indicating its significance. Valve clearance refers to the distance between the camshaft lobes and the valves' tips. Over time, this distance can change due to wear, affecting the engine's performance and fuel efficiency.

To check the valve clearance, you'll need a feeler gauge to measure the gap accurately. The recommended clearance for the intake valves is 0.15-0.25 mm, while the exhaust valves should be 0.20-0.30 mm. If the clearance is out of specification, you'll need to adjust it by either shimming or milling the valve buckets. It's crucial to perform this task regularly, as per the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, to ensure optimal engine performance and longevity.

Misfiring

Misfiring is a common issue in the Nissan 240SX, particularly in the 1995 models equipped with the KA24DE engine. This problem is often characterized by hesitation, stumbling, and misfiring at specific RPM ranges, typically during slow acceleration or idling.

Several factors can contribute to misfiring, including faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, distributor cap, rotor, or even a malfunctioning mass air flow sensor (MAF). In some cases, the issue might be caused by vacuum leaks or a rich fuel mixture due to a malfunctioning coolant temperature sensor.

To diagnose and resolve this issue, it's essential to perform a thorough inspection of the ignition system components and the engine's vacuum and cooling systems. Replacing worn-out parts, such as spark plugs or ignition coils, and addressing any vacuum leaks or cooling system issues can help restore the engine's performance and eliminate misfiring.

Vacuum Leaks

Vacuum leaks are a common problem in the Nissan 240SX, causing various issues, such as rough idling, hesitation, stumbling, and even cutting out at high RPMs. Vacuum leaks can occur in any of the engine's vacuum lines or components, such as the intake manifold, throttle body, or EGR system.

To diagnose vacuum leaks, you can use a can of non-chlorinated brake cleaner and spray it along the vacuum lines while the engine is running. If the engine revs up, it indicates a vacuum leak in that area. Additionally, using a mechanic's stethoscope or a digital multimeter to check for vacuum leaks can be helpful.

Once a vacuum leak is identified, it's crucial to repair or replace the affected vacuum line or component to restore the engine's performance and prevent further damage. Regularly inspecting and maintaining the engine's vacuum system can help prevent vacuum leaks and ensure optimal engine performance.

Can a 240SX be reliable?

The Nissan 240SX is one of the most reliable compact sports cars of the 90s. It comes with extremely simple mechanics and bulletproof engines. This can prove useful, especially for first-time builders who require more reliability than power and complexity.

Is a 1995 240SX a Silvia?

The Nissan Silvia (Japanese: 日産・シルビア, Hepburn: Nissan Shirubia) is the series of small sports cars produced by Nissan. Versions of the Silvia have been marketed as the 200SX or 240SX for export, with some export versions being sold under the Datsun brand.

Is a Nissan 240SX illegal?

The Nissan Silvia S14 is not legal in the United States. The S14s are completely legal; Nissan sold them in the United States. Yes, the S14 240SX are completely legal, but no real Silvias, not quite the same car. Importing a car into the U.S. is a task, but the Golden State poses obstacles even for American cars.

What is so special about 240SX?

Its ideal weight distribution

Experts, both real and aspirational, will quibble over it, but the 240SX is generally regarded as having a near-perfect weight distribution for drifting, at 55:45, front-to-back. This is especially true of the JDM 180SX with its lighter aluminum engine block.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-05-07
  • VIN: JN1AS44D6SW
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: THE GAS TANK ON THE 1995-1998 NISSAN 240SX IS MADE OF A COMPOSITE MATERIAL. BETWEEN FRIDAY MAY 7, AND SATURDAY MAY 8, 2010 A STRESS FRACTURE IN THE FUEL TANK FORMED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, ADJACENT TO THE STRAP WHICH HOLDS THE TANK TO THE CAR. THE FRACTURE IN THE TANK RESULTED IN A LARGE QUANTITY OF FUEL LEAKING OVER THE GARAGE FLOOR. THIS WAS A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM AS IT COULD HAVE LED TO A SEVERE VEHICLE AND HOUSE FIRE. THE FAILURE HAS NOT YET BEEN CORRECTED. TO PREVENT MORE FUEL FROM LEAKING FROM THE VEHICLE, AND TO REDUCE THE POSSIBILITY OF A FIRE, THE VEHICLE'S BATTERY WAS DISCONNECTED, AND THE REMAINING FUEL IN THE VEHICLE WAS SIPHONED INTO GASOLINE CONTAINER. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TANK REQUIRES REMOVING THE ENTIRE REAR SUBFRAME OF THE VEHICLE WHICH CONSISTS OF THE REAR SUSPENSION AND DRIVELINE-- A LABOR INTENSIVE PROCESS. THIS IS THE SECOND COMPOSITE PART THAT HAS FAILED ON THE VEHICLE WITHIN TWO MONTHS. THE MANUFACTURER ALSO USES A RADIATOR WITH COMPOSITE INLETS AND OUTLETS. OVER TIME AND DUE TO HEAT CYCLING, THE COMPOSITE MATERIAL DEVELOPED A STRESS FRACTURE RESULTING IN COOLANT BEING DUMPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

  • Summary: I HAVE A 1995 NISSAN QUEST VEHICLE THAT HAD A SAFETY RECALL FOR A CRACKED FUEL TANK VENT HOSE THAT COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE A FIRE. THE RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED IN JUNE 2001 WITH THE RECALL NOTICE STATING THAT THE HOSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED TO PREVENT THE HOSE FROM CRACKING AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK. ON NOV. 5TH 2004, MY VEHICLE FAILED IT'S ANNUAL STATE EMISSIONS TEST, WITH THE REPORT SAYING THAT I HAD A FUEL SYSTEM LEAK. THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP DISCOVERED THE FUEL TANK VENT HOSE CRACKED AND LEAKING AND CHARGED ME $170 TO REPLACE IT. I PROTESTED THE CHARGE BECAUSE THE RECALL WORK WAS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING. THIS SAFETY RECALL IS NOT EFFECTIVE. NISSAN TOLD ME THAT THE RECALL WORK IS ONLY WARRANTED FOR 1 YEAR. MY CONTENTION IS THAT THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS FROM HAPPENING AND THE LATEST WORK SHOULD BE COVERED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR NISSAN WOULD AGREE TO REIMBURSE ME FOR THE EXPENSE. SINCE THE HOSE SHOULD NOT HAVE CRACKED AGAIN, I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE EXPENSE. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE RECALL WORK WAS NOT EFFECTIVE.*AK

Negative 1995 Nissan 240sx car reviews

  1. Christop Funk 2024-11-26

Congratulations on your new car! I remember how excited I was when I got my first car too. It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice with the 240sx. The acceleration is impressive for a car with only 160 hp and 155 lbs of torque, and the RWD makes it even more fun to drive. I can understand why you would want more power though, and importing a Silvia engine from Japan sounds like a great idea. Enjoy your new ride!

  2. German Armstrong 2024-02-16

I have owned various cars in the past, but unfortunately, the engines in these particular models have been the most challenging to deal with. Both myself and my family have experienced issues ranging from fuel pumps to injectors, exhausts to brake calipers. It can be frustrating at times, but I remain hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon.

Positive 1995 Nissan 240sx car reviews

  1. Maverick Durgan 2024-11-22

I'm so glad I bought this car after a bad driver totaled my 94 Sentra SE-R (I loved that car!). This car had a lot to live up to, but it has really won me over. I've traveled across the country and back in it many times, and it never fails to perform in an outstanding manner. The only thing I've had to replace other than oil, brakes, belts, hoses, and tires was a starter motor at 99,000 miles.

  2. Jairo Bogisich 2024-11-03

I purchased this car 7 years ago with 70,000 miles on it. Currently, it has 157,000 miles on it. So far, I have only had to replace the water hose and mass air flow meter. The mass air flow meter cost me $50 from the junkyard, but $800 from the dealer. Fortunately, parts are easily accessible and affordable at the junkyard. The car has a black leather interior that was factory-made and is even nicer than a BMW. The exterior is painted red and the original paint is holding up well, as I always park it in the garage. The car's performance is stellar, even with an automatic transmission. It has an awesome posi track that allows me to drift corners on dry pavement and do figure eights in the rain. The car gets an impressive 22 MPG when I am driving hard and 25 MPG during normal driving. If you can find a nice stock one, you will absolutely love this car.

  3. Francisco Krajcik 2024-11-01

I've had this baby for a good year and a half. Let me tell you, this is the best value you can get on a sports car for this price! The looks always make you stand apart from the crowd. It's quick with 155hp and has pulled me out of many, many traffic situations. I only wish it had a 6 cyl. I have around 115k on it now and plan to keep it forever. I'm confident I can hold on to it at least until 200k.

  4. Coty Trantow 2024-10-08

This is a great car! While it may not have as much power in the straights, it really shines in the turns. I've found that I can easily out-handle cars that are supposed to be superior in handling. Another great thing about this car is the huge aftermarket. With just a little bit of money, you can swap in an engine from Japan or turbo the engine that's already in the car.

  5. Eli Shields 2024-09-02

I absolutely love my car! It's black with leather seats and power everything, including a sunroof and limited-slip differential. The 2.4L engine is torquey and handles curves like a dream. I've made a few upgrades, including a header, highflow cat., and cold air intake, and the difference is very noticeable. While the stock suspension is a little soft, there are plenty of aftermarket options available. I've put my car through a lot, from drifting to racing to driving hard in the NC mountains, and it has held up incredibly well. With a few modifications, these cars can easily outperform many so-called
