2006 Buick Rainier problems

buick logo

The Buick Rainier is a mid-size luxury SUV that was manufactured by General Motors and marketed by Buick for the 2004 to 2007 model years. It was named after Mount Rainier, and — along with the Saab 9-7X — served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.

History

The Rainier was introduced on July 28, 2003, for the 2004 model year, in a 5-door, 5-passenger configuration, yet was one of only five GMT360 SUVs to offer a V8 engine — along with the GMC Envoy Denali, Isuzu Ascender EXT, Saab 9-7X 5.3i and Aero, and Chevrolet TrailBlazer LT (optional) and SS. Both rear and all-wheel drive models were offered. The only trim available was CXL. An available Sun, Sound and Entertainment package for 2005 (previously called CXL Plus,) added a power sunroof, better Bose stereo, and XM Satellite Radio. For the 2004 model year only, there was a CXL Plus trim level, this became the aforementioned Sun, Sound, and Entertainment package for 2005. A touchscreen DVD-based navigation system was also available with the CXL Plus/SSE package. The 5.3 V8 was also available with the "V8 Power Play" package, which added a "V8" designation to the "RAINIER" script on the left side tailgate.

Buick also debuted the QuietTuning sound insulation on the Rainier, where a vehicle's sound dampening featured triple door seals, side acoustic laminate glass, and thicker sound-absorbing pads on the hood and firewall. The Rainier was the first production vehicle to use side acoustic laminate glass.

The Rainier was discontinued after the 2007 model year and was replaced by the Buick Enclave in 2008. GM ended production of the related Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, and Saab 9-7X after the 2009 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2004 Rainier an overall Marginal score for front impacts while the 2005 and newer models are given an Acceptable score. In side impacts the Rainier was given an overall Marginal score with side airbags present.

Common 2006 Buick Rainier problems

The Buick Rainier, a mid-size SUV produced by General Motors, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

Air Compressor for Rear Air Springs May Fail
One of the most common issues reported is the failure of the air compressor for the rear air springs. This problem can lead to a loss of air pressure in the rear suspension, causing the vehicle to sag or sit lower than normal. The air compressor is responsible for maintaining the correct air pressure in the rear air springs, which helps to provide a smooth and comfortable ride. When the air compressor fails, it may need to be replaced to restore the proper function of the rear suspension.

Fuel Level Sensor Failure
Another common problem reported by Buick Rainier owners is the failure of the fuel level sensor. This issue can result in inaccurate fuel level readings on the dashboard, making it difficult for drivers to know how much fuel is left in the tank. In some cases, the fuel level sensor may fail completely, causing the fuel gauge to display an incorrect or erratic reading. This problem may require replacement of the fuel level sensor to restore accurate fuel level readings.

Air Conditioning Only Blows Out the Bottom Vents
Some Buick Rainier owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system, specifically that it only blows out air from the bottom vents. This problem can make it difficult to cool the vehicle effectively, as the air is not being distributed evenly throughout the cabin. The issue may be caused by a problem with the air conditioning system's blend door actuator, which controls the direction of airflow within the system. Replacing the blend door actuator may be necessary to restore proper airflow from the air conditioning system.

Exterior Door Handles Breaking
The exterior door handles of the 2006 Buick Rainier have been reported to break, with five complaints recorded. This issue can make it difficult to open the doors from the outside, potentially causing inconvenience or safety concerns. The exact cause of this problem is not clear, but it may be related to the design or materials used in the door handles. Replacing the broken door handle may be necessary to restore proper function.

AC System Stopped Working
The air conditioning system of the 2004 Buick Rainier has been reported to stop working, with three complaints recorded. This issue can make it difficult to cool the vehicle effectively, especially during hot weather. The problem may be caused by a variety of factors, including a failed compressor, a refrigerant leak, or a problem with the electrical system. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

Multiple Electrical Issues
Some Buick Rainier owners have reported multiple electrical issues, with two complaints recorded for the 2005 model year. These issues can range from minor problems, such as intermittent warning lights or electrical accessories not working properly, to more serious issues, such as the vehicle failing to start or run. The exact cause of these electrical issues is not clear, but they may be related to problems with the vehicle's wiring, electrical components, or computer systems. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

Odometer Malfunctioning
The odometer of the 2004 Buick Rainier has been reported to malfunction, with two complaints recorded. This issue can make it difficult to accurately track the vehicle's mileage, potentially affecting its value or the ability to sell it in the future. The problem may be caused by a variety of factors, including a failed odometer display, a problem with the vehicle's wiring or computer systems, or a mechanical issue with the odometer itself. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

Sudden Low Beam Headlight Failure
The low beam headlights of the Buick Rainier have been reported to fail suddenly, even though the lights themselves are perfectly fine. This issue is caused by a defective headlamp driver module, which is responsible for distributing power to the headlights. The problem affects the 1st generation Lacrosse and Rainier models, and can make it difficult to see while driving at night. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

Suspension Problems
The suspension system of the Buick Rainier has been reported to have several issues, with eight complaints recorded. These issues can range from minor problems, such as a rough ride or excessive noise, to more serious issues, such as the vehicle sagging or bottoming out. The problem may be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged suspension components, a problem with the vehicle's alignment, or a problem with the air suspension system. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

Interior Problems
The interior of the Buick Rainier has been reported to have several issues, with seven complaints recorded. These issues can range from minor problems, such as rattles or squeaks, to more serious issues, such as malfunctioning controls or displays. The problem may be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged interior components, a problem with the vehicle's wiring or computer systems, or a problem with the HVAC system. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

Electrical Problems
The electrical system of the Buick Rainier has been reported to have several issues, with seven complaints recorded.

Exterior Problems
The exterior of the Buick Rainier has been reported to have several issues, with five complaints recorded. These issues can range from minor problems, such as paint or trim issues, to more serious issues, such as exterior door handles breaking. The problem may be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, manufacturing defects, or damage from accidents or other sources. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

HVAC Problems
The HVAC system of the Buick Rainier has been reported to have several issues, with four complaints recorded. These issues can range from minor problems, such as poor airflow or temperature control, to more serious issues, such as the air conditioning system not working at all. The problem may be caused by a variety of factors, including a problem with the blower motor, a problem with the HVAC control module, or a problem with the air conditioning system's compressor or refrigerant lines. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function.

In summary, the Buick Rainier has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues can range from minor problems, such as rattles or squeaks, to more serious issues, such as the vehicle failing to start or run. A professional diagnosis and repair may be necessary to restore proper function in many cases.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-05
  • VIN: 5GADS13S862
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: During periods of time with ignition switch on, the wipers will loose the ability to both regulate speed and shut off. The wiper cover AC Delco/GM part number 19120931 will fail and loose control of the wipers (fail to shut off while driving). Because you cannot shut off the wipers, the driver's vision is obscured, and the noise from the wipers on the dry glass is very distracting. This will cause drivers attention to shift from focus on driving to manipulating the wiper switch. GM has not ordered a stock or replacement wiper covers from AC Delco, so trying to locate a fix for this problem is very hard. This is a GM design problem and is very expensive to fix. As a minimum GM needs to stock this part. All of these wiper covers will fail eventually, and accidents from this problem will occur.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-26
  • VIN: 5GADT13S562
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: In driving cross country, filled up the fuel tank and resumed travel when the fuel gauge immediately went to empty (I didn’t even have time to drive up the highway ramp back onto the highway). The alerts started ringing and blinking and dash board told me there was no fuel. I went to a gravel area and inspected the engine compartment, under the car and the interior to be sure I was not missing anything, then restarted the SUV. Could not find any issues anywhere, including leaking fuel. I took off the fuel cap and reattached it to be sure there was no problem there. I had no choice but to get on the highway and continue my journey. The problem continued for the following 1000 ish miles. When I got home I contacted my dealer and set up an appointment to look at vehicle. They found the vehicle needing a sensor kit which was a recall back a few years ago. I had the issue repaired which took 3 days. They may have the removed items. Attached please find the invoice from the repair that shows the message numbers, etc from the inspection prior to and during repair. Since this issue was a recall, but I understand not for my vehicle but for many similar SUV’s and Pickups of the same area of manufacture; I feel the same components were used in my vehicle and should be paid for and included in this recall. Attached please find the invoice if I can figure out how to get it attached to this type of format.

2006 Buick Rainier recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2006 Buick Rainier.

2015-09-24
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: VISIBILITY:POWER WINDOW DEVICES AND CONTROLS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer and GMC Envoy vehicles, and 2006 GMC Envoy XL and Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT vehicles. Fluid may enter into the driver's door master power window switch module, causing corrosion that could result in a short in the circuit board, causing window switches to become inoperative. Previously, the affected vehicles may have had their master power window switch module treated with a protective coating, instead of having it replaced.
  • Consequence: The protective coating may not eliminate the risk that the circuit board could short and result in a fire, even while the vehicle is unattended.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install a new driver's door switch module, free of charge. The recall began on November 2, 2015. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15700.
2015-08-14
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2006-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer EXT, GMC Envoy XL, 2006-2008 Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7x vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.

Negative 2006 Buick Rainier car reviews

  1. Rowland O'Keefe 2024-07-20

1197 total miles and the car would not start. Complete electrical shut down. It's been out of service for 3 days now attempting to be fixed. Can GM do a little better job?

  2. Gennaro Collier 2024-06-14

I love the way my new car drives, but the gas mileage is not great. I have been averaging 10.1 miles per gallon, even when I tried driving with the windows open. Although I really enjoy the car, I would like to get more mileage from a tank of gas. On a full tank, I drove almost all highway and got 239 miles.

My grandmother bought this car used for me. She purchased the V8. Although the mpg is not great, it has great power and acceleration. However, there is not enough storage room inside the car. Unfortunately, it has had many problems and has been in the shop for about 2 weeks due to some sort of engine problem. I hope it gets fixed soon!

  4. Mark Osinski 2024-05-19

Our Buick Ranier has plenty of interior room and has been very reliable so far. However, I have experienced some issues with the interior build quality. Unfortunately, everything from the door handles and door power panel mouldings to the side door mouldings has fallen off, and the seatbelts stick. Additionally, the rear end makes an 'undetermined' noise, and it does not handle great if you have to do any sudden 'avoidance maneuvers' while driving. Although I mostly drive on the highway, I have never seen anywhere near the supposed 21mpg mark. I average 17.2mpg in a 2WD. While it may not be in the luxury class, it is still a decent GM SUV. I am admittedly disappointed, and I can't wait until my lease is up. Unfortunately, it also has a terrible resale value. However, I believe that GM can improve by listening to the concerns of buyers and working with them to build vehicles that people want. It's clear that Toyota and Honda have taken off because they listen to their customers. Thank you for considering my feedback.

Positive 2006 Buick Rainier car reviews

  1. Sven Breitenberg 2025-01-03

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I purchased it back in Dec '06 when it had 13k miles on it, and now it has 65k miles on it. I'm happy to report that it has been incredibly reliable - the only issue I had was a headlight relay, which was quickly replaced under warranty. It's a smooth and comfortable ride, and it handles great in the snow. I even use it to tow my 4k lbs, 26ft sailboat! On mostly highway driving, I average around 19 mpg. I have to say, the quality of materials and assembly is top-notch - the leather upholstery is even better than what I have in my '04 Mercedes. Thanks for listening!

  2. Gillian Medhurst 2024-11-28

I really love this mid-size SUV! I test drove over 20 other SUVs before deciding on purchasing the Ranier, and I'm so glad I did. It has plenty of pep, even with a 6-cylinder engine. The interior is by far the most comfortable of all the SUVs I test drove. As someone who is very tall and needs a long seat, I found that the Japanese SUVs were too short-seated to give me proper leg or hip support. The ride is incredibly quiet, which I really appreciate. I also love the XM/CD/radio/nav system - it's so convenient! Additionally, there's lots of room - I can easily haul 5 golfers and their golf bags. I chose leather interior and it's both comfortable and classy. The only thing I would change is to have more storage space in the middle console.

  3. Watson Donnelly 2024-09-13

No major problems up to 100,000 miles then I replaced the computer and fuse box. Now it runs great! However, I absolutely love this car. In fact, this is the second Ranier I have owned (a 2004), which still runs great at 220,000 miles and is now driven by my sister-in-law.

  4. Jessy VonRueden 2024-08-08

I recently purchased a 2006 Rainier to replace my 2004 Rendevous. While I miss a few features from my old car, such as parking assist and customized radio and seat settings on the key fob, the Rainier has its own advantages. The Rainier has curb view on the rear view mirror, and although the mirrors are smaller than the Rendevous, it feels more stable on the road and is quieter. Additionally, I am getting better mileage with the Rainier. Overall, I am happy with my purchase and enjoying the new features of my Rainier.

  5. Gussie Walsh 2024-07-19

My family, consisting of two boys, and I decided to purchase this car due to its reasonable price and luxurious features. The seats are incredibly comfortable and the ride is both quiet and smooth. Although the power could be improved, I absolutely adore the car's appearance. I would highly recommend it to anyone. However, the cup holders in the front could use some improvement.
