The Mercury Grand Marquis is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from the 1975 until 2011 model years. Introduced as the flagship sub-model of the Mercury Marquis in 1975, the Grand Marquis became a stand-alone model line in 1983, serving as the largest Mercury sedan. The model line served as the sedan counterpart of the Mercury Colony Park station wagon up to 1991. The fourth generation was the basis of the 2003 and 2004 Mercury Marauder.

From 1979 until 2011, the Grand Marquis shared the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (Ford Crown Victoria after 1992), and from 1980, the Lincoln Town Car. For over three decades, the Ford and Mercury sedans were functionally identical, with two of the three generations of the model line sharing the same roofline. The Grand Marquis was available as a four-door sedan for nearly its entire run; from 1988 to its final year in 2011, it was the only body style that was offered. A four-door hardtop was available from 1975 to 1978 and a two-door hardtop coupe from 1975 to 1987.

The Grand Marquis was the second-best-selling Mercury line (after the Cougar) with 2.7 million units produced; at 36 years of continuous production, the Grand Marquis was the longest-running Mercury nameplate (the Cougar, 34 years). Ford manufactured the Grand Marquis, alongside the Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria, and (beginning in 2007) the Lincoln Town Car, at two facilities: the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri (1979-1985) and the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada (1986-2011).

Ford announced the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2010, but a few 2011 model-year Mercurys were made. The last Grand Marquis - and the final Mercury branded car - was produced on January 4, 2011, at St. Thomas Assembly.

Common 1990 Mercury Grand marquis problems

The Mercury Grand Marquis, produced from 1983 to 2011, is known for its spacious interior, smooth ride, and classic design. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. This article will focus on the 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis, highlighting the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners.

  • Intake Manifold Failure: The 1990 Grand Marquis experienced issues with intake manifold failure, which could lead to leaking coolant behind the alternator. This problem was common in many Mercury Grand Marquis models, including the 1997 model, which had the highest number of complaints in this category.
  • Engine Problems: The 1990 model year had several engine-related issues, including poor acceleration, burning oil smell, fuel injectors stopping work, running hot, and surging. These problems could be caused by various factors, such as worn-out parts, lack of maintenance, or design flaws.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems were also common in the 1990 Grand Marquis. For example, the car's cluster might attack, causing the car to not start. This issue could be related to the ignition module, ignition switch, or other electrical components.
  • Transmission Failure: Some owners reported transmission failure in their 1990 Grand Marquis. This problem could be caused by various factors, such as low fluid levels, worn-out parts, or design flaws.
  • Seat Belt Buckle Failure: The spring in the seat belt buckle might fail, making it difficult to secure the seat belt. This problem could be caused by wear and tear or design flaws.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by owners of the 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis. It is essential to note that not all vehicles of this model year will experience these issues, and regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent or mitigate many of these problems.

PREVIOUS TWO WERE COVERED BY EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT WERE OF SIMILIAR MAGNITUDE. CAR IS LOW MILEAGE AND IN GREAT PHSICAL CONDITION BUT IS A MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL LEMON. CURRENT PROBLEM WHICH PROMPTED REPORTING IS THE ENGINE STALLING AT HIGHWAY SPEED ABOUT 6 TIMES IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS. THERE IS NO WARNING AND NO MISSING AND YOU ARE FORCED TO MANEUVAR THE CAR OUT OF TRAFFIC WIHOUT POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES. CAR WILL NOT RESTART BY CRANKING ENGINE AND DOESN'T EVEN TRY. ACTS LIKE IGNITION OR FUEL SUPPLY HAS BEEN DISABLED. HOWEVER, IF YOU OPEN THE AIR CLEANER AND LIFT THE AIR FILTER, CAR STARTS RIGHT AWAY. HAVE REPLACED AIR FILTER EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NOT DIRTY - DID NOT HELP. AFTER AN INTERNET INQUIRY, WAS REFERRED TO "THICK FILM INJECTION (TFI) CLASS ACTION SUIT" AT WWW.AUTOSAFETY.ORG/ACTIONALERTS/TFI-INTO.HTM. THIS REFERENCE ENGINE STALLING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND SOUNDS VERY SIMILAR TO OUR PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO THIS REPORT OUR VEHICLE HAS THE DISTRIBUTOR MOUNTED TFI MODULE AS INDICATED BY "1984-94 LTD/MARQUIS (5.0L)". CONTACTED SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT NORTHPOINT FORD IN ALPHARETTA ON 2/16/01. SCOTT SAID PROBLEM WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE UNLESS IT HAPPENED WHILE THE DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT WAS CONNECTED WHICH IS HIGHLY UNPROBABLE. REPORTED THE ENGINE STALLING PROBLEM TO CHARLENE AT FORD CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER ON 2/16/01 WHO SAYS THERE ARE NO OUTSTANDING RECALLS ON THIS PROBLEM AND STATED THAT THE TFI PROBLEM/CLAIM IS BEING APPEALED IN CALIFORNIA. REPORTED TO NHTSA ON 2/16/01 WHO REFERRED ME TO THIS WEB SITE.*AK
