The Mini Countryman, also called Mini Crossover in Japan, is a subcompact crossover SUV, the first vehicle of this type to be launched by BMW under the Mini marque. It was launched in 2010 and received a facelift in 2014. The second generation vehicle was released in 2017.

Pre-production concepts

The Mini Crossover Concept previewed the design of the Countryman. It has four doors (2 right swing open, 1 left swing open, 1 left lift/sliding) and four single seats. It was unveiled at the 2008 Paris Motor Show.

The 2010 Mini Beachcomber Concept was based on the Crossover Concept and the Mini Countryman, with no doors and no conventional roof. It included ALL4 all-wheel drive and offroad wheels. It was unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

Common 2022 Mini Countryman problems

The Mini Cooper Countryman, a roomy SUV with stylish looks and reliable performance, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners.

Transmission problems are one of the top Mini Cooper Countryman problems, with some owners reporting issues such as rough shifting, slipping, and jerking. These problems can lead to a less enjoyable driving experience and may require costly repairs.

Clutch issues have also been reported by Mini Cooper Countryman owners, with some experiencing difficulty shifting gears or a clutch pedal that feels spongy or loose. These issues can affect the vehicle's performance and may require replacement of the clutch system.

Another problem that has been reported is an exploding sunroof, which can be a safety hazard for both the driver and passengers. This issue has led to recalls and repairs, but it is still a concern for some Mini Cooper Countryman owners.

In addition to these common problems, some owners have reported issues with the exterior panel quality, with panels on the C pillars seeming to be glued on and making a "popping" noise when the weather is warm. This noise can even be heard in the interior occasionally, which can be distracting and annoying for drivers.

An odd ticking noise from the engine has also been reported, although it is a one-time occurrence and may not be a significant issue. However, it is still a concern for some Mini Cooper Countryman owners.

Green mode, which is designed to help save gas, has been reported to cause a noticeable lag when putting the foot down on the gas pedal, leading to a significant difference in response time compared to other modes. This issue can affect the vehicle's performance and may be a concern for some owners.

CarPlay would disconnect and reconnect randomly, also harder to connect different iPhones, which can be frustrating for drivers who rely on this feature for navigation and entertainment. This issue may require software updates or other repairs to resolve.

Finally, some Mini Cooper Countryman owners have reported issues with the Mini dealership, with undertrained service techs who may break the car more than fix it. This issue can affect the overall ownership experience and may require owners to seek out alternative repair options.

In conclusion, while the Mini Cooper Countryman is a reliable SUV, some common problems have been reported by owners, including transmission problems, clutch issues, an exploding sunroof, exterior panel quality, odd ticking noise from the engine, Green mode, CarPlay, and Mini dealership issues. These issues can affect the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall ownership experience, and may require costly repairs or alternative repair options.

Negative 2022 Mini Countryman car reviews

I recently purchased a Mini hybrid without doing any research beforehand. However, my previous experience with Mini and their dealer was so positive that I didn't hesitate to check out the 2019 hybrid. When I saw the hybrid in the showroom, I was immediately drawn to it. Unfortunately, I didn't fully understand the meaning of the 60+ sticker on the window, which turned out to be very different from other hybrids. Have you ever made an impulse purchase only to regret it later? I certainly have. I must warn potential buyers to be cautious of the Hybrid Mini. Although I'm not satisfied with my purchase, I'm unable to sell it back to the dealer due to the significant loss I would incur. The car has a range of only 30 mpg, which is not ideal for my 74-mile commute to work. It also has a small 9-gallon tank and requires frequent charging. Despite the car's shortcomings, I appreciate the dealer's willingness to work with me. I now understand that the 60+ on the sticker is just one component of a formula used to estimate fuel economy based on individual driving habits. If you're someone who enjoys zipping from 0-60 in just a few minutes, prioritizes appearance over practicality, or has a grocery store within walking distance, then this car might just be the perfect fit for you! It's cute and gives the illusion of fuel economy. Today, I drove my kid to school in 'Eco Green' mode, covering a round trip of about 3 miles with an average speed of 21 mph and an impressive MPG of 34.4. If you happen to see me on the road, give me a little honk! My car is the one with prominent 'Buyer Beware' signs all over it. I admit, I didn't do my homework before buying this car, so please don't insult me or make unrealistic recommendations. The salesman was a good guy, the dealership is nice, and the car is cute, but I was hoping for a vehicle with better gas mileage and a nicer driving experience. During my test drive, I didn't notice a few things that have become a bit of a nuisance. For example, the toggles are cute but become non-functional if a drink is placed in the cupholder, and the power windows squeal when put down. Additionally, the automatic lift gate only works to raise occasionally and doesn't work at all for closing. The dash is made of a strange material that attracts and holds dust, and the cargo capacity is small when the back seats are up. The owner's manual is not very helpful, and I'm still trying to figure out how to use the online manual. To optimize mileage, multiple steps are required to program for efficiency, which can be a bit of a hassle while driving. Overall, this car has its quirks, but it might be the perfect fit for someone who prioritizes appearance and doesn't mind a few minor inconveniences.A single button or toggle would be more user-friendly than the confusing controls on the round knob. It seems that Mini recognized this issue, as they included redundant buttons to bypass the knob and quickly access functions such as turning on the radio. It would have been simpler if they had designed the knob to turn on the radio with the on/off button. Although I have 40 years of driving experience, I still struggled with the car's functionality. Mini offered to send a Unicorn Engineer to teach me how to drive it, but I have not heard back from them yet. If you plan to buy this car, be prepared to spend some time at the dealer for a class on how to use it. If you're looking for a car that offers a pleasant driving experience and good fuel economy at an affordable price, you may want to consider other options.

This car is a blast to drive and has some really neat features like the interior lights, moon roof, and keyless entry. However, the technology could use some improvement for the price point. Unfortunately, the car did not sync up with the key to keep the driver's settings and Google Maps is not available on the system. Additionally, the Mini Connected app did not function as intended. Despite these setbacks, I am looking forward to returning the car.

  3. Clyde Bechtelar 2024-07-27

I love Mini Cooper, but I wasn't happy with my last one. I'm hoping that my next lease will be as good as the first one I had.

  4. Torey Waters 2024-06-04

The dealership informed me that the front brake pads needed to be replaced at 17k. They mentioned that this car is designed for rally purposes and therefore the brake pads are thinner. Although I have never used it for rally, I understand the reasoning behind it. However, I do wish that the brake pads could last longer. I am concerned that the cost of ownership for this car may be high.

  5. Nathen Gutmann 2024-04-20

I recently rented this car while my own was being repaired after a collision. Unfortunately, I found the suspension to be quite stiff and the acceleration onto the freeway required a lot of effort. Additionally, the radio/infotainment system was difficult to navigate and even had a warning not to scroll through it while driving. The seats were not particularly comfortable and leg room was cramped in the front. While the car rides okay at freeway speeds with cruise control on, it is not ideal for city driving or sitting in traffic. There were also some minor inconveniences such as needing to use a key to enter the car and the Bluetooth occasionally cutting out. The air conditioning was quite loud and made it difficult to hear the radio, especially when on full blast. Unfortunately, this car does not have navigation or support for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Overall, I would recommend looking for other options when renting or purchasing a car. There are plenty of better cars available for a cheaper price.

Positive 2022 Mini Countryman car reviews

  1. Macey Klein 2025-07-22

I'm so glad to hear that you bought this car for your kids and that everyone loves it! It sounds like it has just the right amount of power for inexperienced drivers, and the high-quality finishings and comfortable seating make it even better. Plus, it's great to hear that there's more cargo room than expected for a small SUV.

  2. Conrad Balistreri 2025-07-20

The car has a great combination of electric and gas power, which engages automatically whenever you stop and restart the car. There are many things that I like about this vehicle, and a few that could be improved. As a BMW owner since 1989, I was hesitant to switch, but I wanted a vehicle that could handle off-road adventures. Although BMW X models don't typically look like off-road vehicles, I test drove the brand and was pleasantly surprised. I drove the S, which was very nice, and the JCW, which had loud engine noise during acceleration and stiff handling over bumps. The SE was extremely quiet, and I didn't even know it was running. Overall, I think the SE performed the best, but the S is a good trade-off. I chose the SE because the dealer was offering a $3k discount, and the government discount for hybrids made it priced similarly to the S. I love the enter/exit height of the vehicle, which means no plopping down or having to climb up into it. I also love that it came with all of the bells and whistles standard in the limited edition. However, I was surprised that it included features to prevent you from hitting a vehicle or pedestrian in front of you but left out blind spot warnings. The interior is excellent, and the seats are quite comfy in cloth. The only downside is that the seats are manual instead of power, but that's not a big deal since I rarely change the seat position except for when wearing winter gear. The rear lift gate opens easily with a light kick and then backing up. Gas mileage depends on how you drive, but I've managed to get into a rhythm. The trick to getting excellent gas mileage is to use the green mode, although performance is definitely hampered. When you're on a road by yourself or in heavy traffic, it's great to save during these times. When driving in green mode on back roads or in heavy traffic, I like to select 'save the battery' which recharges the battery quite well. I really enjoy the cornering lights because they light up the way when turning. Additionally, I love the car play and the HK sound system!

  3. Franco Kulas 2025-07-18

The car is performing better than expected, averaging 80 MPG despite the short commute. The drive is quiet, the transmission is smooth, and the acceleration is excellent. I absolutely love the Mini interior, it has much more style than other competitors and the materials are great. I haven't experienced any rattles or squeaks so far. The roof rails and fold-down seats come in handy, and the plug-in with 120v is fine for overnight charging. Although the electric range is adequate, it would be nice to have a 20-25 mile range. Beyond that, on a hybrid, it seems like a waste of money, weight, and resources. It should be big enough for a round trip commute, and road trips will use gas regardless. My only minor complaint is that the brakes are a little touchy at slow speed stops, but I can get used to it by feathering the pedal. Overall, I would rate this car 4.5 stars! I absolutely love it...

  4. Adrian Mueller 2025-05-14

As a long-time Honda/Acura enthusiast, I recently test drove the Countryman S as a potential replacement for my Acura TSX. From the moment I got behind the wheel, I fell in love with the ride, handling, space, and overall look of the car. However, I did find the sport seats to be a bit uncomfortable due to their pronounced side support and hard feel. Despite this one issue, I still highly recommend the car and suggest that potential buyers consider ordering the normal seats. Overall, the Countryman S is a fantastic car that I would definitely recommend!

  5. Bell Goyette 2025-05-09

This car is a significant improvement in drivability compared to my previous models from 2015 and 2013. The controls inside are of higher quality and the ride quality, noise, vibration, harshness, and overall livability have all been upgraded. However, I have had some issues with the leatherette upholstery on the driver's seat. This is the third MINI I have owned where the leatherette has broken down and cracked. Fortunately, the driver's seat cover was replaced under warranty on my previous MINIs, and I am hoping for the same outcome with my 2018 model. Despite this issue, I still believe that MINI is a premium make and I am overall satisfied with my purchase.
