1998 Jaguar Xjv8 problems
The Jaguar XJ (X308) is a full-size luxury saloon car manufactured and marketed by Jaguar Cars for years 1997–2003 across two generations and featuring the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine and Jaguar independent rear suspension. It was the third and final evolution of the Jaguar XJ40 platform that had been in production since 1986. It was preceded by the Jaguar XJ (X300).
Exterior
The X308 kept much of the same exterior styling as its predecessor, the Jaguar XJ (X300), carrying its rounded four-headlamp bonnet, low roofline, sloping tail, and wrap-around rear light clusters. From the front, the two generations can be differentiated by the shape of the indicator lenses (rectangular on the X300, oval on the X308), and also by the shape of the fog lamps and lower valance air intake, both of which are more rounded on the X308.
The front and rear bumpers were both changed along with the taillights which had red/clear lenses rather than red/grey lenses. The grille surround and badging was slightly changed. The headlight fixtures also included forward parking lights housed with the brights, new to X308.

Common 1998 Jaguar Xjv8 problems
The Jaguar XJV8 1998 is a luxury saloon that is known for its blend of traditional styling and modern v8 engineering, performance, and luxury. However, like any vehicle, it has its common problems and complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues based on the search results:
- Water Pump Failure: The water pump in the XJV8 1998 uses a plastic impeller, which can crumble away, leading to no water circulation and engine overheating. This issue can be solved by replacing the water pump with a metal impeller or a later water pump from the 4.2-litre engine.
- Noisy Rear Axle: A noisy rear axle is not uncommon in high-mileage XJV8 1998 cars. It can get slightly whiney and then not get any worse for the next 100,000 miles. It's worth checking for leaking pinion seals and for perishing of the rubber coupling at the rear of the driveshaft.
- Suspension, Steering, and Brakes: The XJV8 1998 has a suspension, steering, and brakes system that requires regular maintenance and inspection. The universal joints, wheel bearings, and differential output bearings should be free of play to ensure proper handling. Suspension, steering, and brakes should be inspected regularly for wear and tear.
- Engine and Transmission: The XJV8 1998's engine and transmission can also have issues. The AJ16 engine was carried over in 3.2 and 4-litre form, but it can have problems with the upper chain tensioner, which can break down over time. The five-speed XF unit found in contemporary BMWs can also have issues, such as engaging drive smoothly and changing gently without 'flaring' between gears. Ensure it engages drive in reverse when warm and also check the level of the fluid.
In conclusion, while the Jaguar XJV8 1998 is a luxurious and powerful vehicle, it requires regular maintenance and inspection to ensure its longevity and reliability. The common problems listed above should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage and ensure safe and enjoyable driving.
