2022 Jaguar I-pace problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar I-Pace (stylised as I-PACE) is a battery-electric crossover SUV produced by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under their Jaguar marque. The I-Pace was announced in March 2018, European deliveries began in June 2018 and North American deliveries started in October 2018. Amid slowing sales and a change in corporate vision, Jaguar has announced that the I-Pace will be discontinued by 2025.

Development

The Jaguar I-Pace was designed by Ian Callum. The concept version of the car, described as a five-seater sports car, was unveiled by JLR at the 2016 Los Angeles Motor Show and shown on-road in London in March 2017.

The I-Pace is built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, and the production version of the I-Pace was revealed in Graz on 1 March 2018.

Some of the electric drive technology has come out of the Jaguar I-Type electric Formula E racing car programme, and the concentric motors were developed by JLR engineer Dr. Alex Michaelides.

Common 2022 Jaguar I-pace problems

The Jaguar I-PACE, a luxury electric SUV introduced in 2018, has been lauded for its design and performance

. However, as with any vehicle, it has experienced a range of issues, particularly in its early years of production.

One of the most significant concerns has been the infotainment system. Many owners have reported issues with the screens freezing, not operating as intended, or requiring a reboot

. These problems have been largely resolved through software updates and system reboots, but they can still be frustrating for owners. It is recommended to thoroughly test the infotainment system during a test drive and ensure it functions as expected.

Another common issue has been traction battery failures, particularly in earlier I-PACE models. These failures have been discussed extensively on Jaguar I-PACE forums and have been linked to a specific update, H441. Affected vehicles may have their charge limited to around 70% capacity

. Before purchasing an I-PACE, it is advisable to ask the owner about any past battery issues or replacements, and if buying from a dealership, to check the service book for any relevant entries.

Leaks in the driver or passenger footwell have also been reported by some owners. These leaks can be caused by door seal failure, a windscreen not correctly bonded, or issues with the air conditioning system

. It is essential to carefully inspect the vehicle for any signs of leaks during a test drive or inspection.

A wiring harness for the 12V battery can also become problematic, requiring replacement. This is a labor-intensive job, and while the actual wiring itself is a small part of the overall system, fitting it can be time-consuming and costly. It is crucial to be aware of this potential issue when considering the purchase of a Jaguar I-PACE

Some owners have also experienced problems with the air suspension, particularly in earlier models. These issues have been resolved under warranty, but they are still worth noting

In summary, while the Jaguar I-PACE is a capable and stylish electric SUV, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues, particularly those related to the infotainment system, traction battery, leaks, and the 12V battery wiring harness. Thoroughly testing and inspecting the vehicle, as well as asking the right questions, can help ensure a trouble-free ownership experience.

What is the problem with I-Pace?

Some owners have reported malfunctioning charging ports and general problems with charging. That said, the electric drivetrain is at least largely free of moving parts and the interior feels strongly assembled – but I-Pace owning Parkers readers report poor reliability in their reviews of the car.

Why is the I-Pace not selling?

Jaguar has confirmed the I-Pace will be discontinued alongside all the brand's internal combustion engine (ICE) models in 2025, when the brand is re-launched. Speaking to Autocar, JLR CEO Adrian Mardell confirmed the car would be retired to give Jaguar a completely fresh start.

Is Jaguar I-Pace Electric reliable?

Is a used Jaguar I-Pace estate reliable? The I-Pace performed poorly in our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, coming eighth out of nine cars in the electric car class. This isn't the first time it's proven itself troublesome, either, because it's been like this ever since it was initially released.

What happened to the Jaguar I-Pace?

The Jaguar I-Pace will not be part of the firm's all-electric line-up, even as a bridging model, and will be taken off sale before the firm's relaunch in 2025 - along with the rest of the current model range.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-11
  • VIN: SADHD2S17N1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving a 2022 Jaguar I-Pace for 60 miles, the car came to a stop sign near its destination. At this point, the car would stutter and shake when attempting to accelerate, simultaneously the car would roll back since there was a slight decline in the road. Brakes were full functional throughout this time. However, no warnings were shown during the occurrence and by the time the driver was able to apply the brakes, the car had already rolled back approximately 2 feet. After this time, the car accelerated but the issue repeated itself at the next stop sign and again at the destination. While approaching a drive way at the destination with a 10-15% grade, the vehicle completely cut power halfway up the drive way. At this time the car rolled back into the street, approximately 6 feet, before the driver could react and apply brakes. Had there been someone standing or walking on the side walk at the end of the driveway, it would have resulted in severe injuries or even death. At the time, no vehicles were on the road, however if there were, the vehicle would have rolled into traffic before the driver is able to react. Power was regained approximately 10 seconds after rolling backwards. The vehicle was then parked curbside for approximately 4 hours. Upon starting and driving the vehicle again, the same issues with stuttering/shaking when accelerating from a standstill and sudden loss of power with any incline continued. The next day, the vehicle had to be towed to a Jaguar Land Rover dealer for investigation. No previous repair work or modifications have been done to the vehicle. All care and maintenance had been done according to the manual. Battery was also charged to 80% as recommended by the manual for optimal battery life. At the time the issues had started, the vehicle showed 48% battery life remaining. No previous issues or problems had occurred with the vehicle, no recalls or TSB in place as of 9/12/22 for the 2022 model year.

Negative 2022 Jaguar I-pace car reviews

  1. Myron Schinner 2024-05-17

Sorry to hear about the issues you've had with your car. It must have been really frustrating to have so many faults so soon after buying it. I hope that the mechanic is able to fix everything and that you can start enjoying your new car soon. It's disappointing to hear that the customer service hasn't been up to scratch, but I'm sure they will do everything they can to make it right for you.

  2. Julius Stroman 2024-05-16

I would strongly advise against getting one of these. Our experience with Pivotal has been nothing but trouble. Shortly after taking delivery, the car stopped charging midway. This caused us significant inconvenience during our holiday in Devon, as we were unable to recharge the car to come home. Despite the efforts of AA breakdown and a Jaguar JLR technician, the car remained unusable until Monday morning. This resulted in lost pay and other disadvantages. Although the technician was able to update some software and get the car charging again, it had to be taken into the garage on Wednesday and remains there. We are due to return to Devon this afternoon, but we have no car. Guy Salmon has offered us a petrol car, but we are not interested in this option. As long-time electric car owners, we have never experienced such difficulties with Nissan or Hyundai. To make matters worse, the Jaguar customer relationship centre is currently closed and we are unable to get through on the phone. Given the amount we have paid for this car, we are extremely disappointed and stressed by this situation.

  3. Hudson Reynolds 2024-01-07

The car's charging issues have been thoroughly investigated and it has been determined that it can only be charged using a DC fast charger, rather than a 220v charger at home. This information has been confirmed by the dealership.

Positive 2022 Jaguar I-pace car reviews

  1. Gust Bernhard 2024-11-14

This is the most comfortable SUV I've ever driven. Other than the F-Type, it is also the car that is the most fun to drive. It's so quick, with smooth acceleration, that before you know it, you're at 60 MPH. My wife and I absolutely love this car.

  2. Axel Green 2024-11-11

Everything works just like a normal gas vehicle, so there's nothing new to learn, except for the locations of EV chargers! The fit, finish, and material quality are superb, and the performance is absolutely stunning. In my experience, the real-life range appears to be just over 200 miles, but that's without any attempt to be frugal on my part. I recently did a ~350 mile trip home when I picked it up, stopping twice for approximately 25 minutes each time to top up the battery. It was easy and hassle-free!

  3. Merritt Casper 2024-10-11

I can tell you that I absolutely love my I Pace! It's definitely my favorite car, even after owning many top models from Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes. It's beautiful, comfortable, and an absolute joy to drive. I did have a small issue with the 12V start-up battery at first, but once that was fixed, I haven't had any problems at all.

  4. Dillon Labadie 2024-09-29

I have been lucky enough to lease many fantastic cars in my life, including the Audi S8, BMW 740, Porsche Cayenne, and more. However, the Jaguar I Pace is my first electric car and I absolutely love it! It's so much fun to drive, with excellent control, and the interior is both beautiful and comfortable. In fact, I love it so much that I've decided to keep it instead of continuing to lease cars.

  5. Brant Brown 2024-09-08

If you're considering an EV, please give the IPace a close look. In our experience, we've found that the IPace outperforms our Tesla Model S in almost every way.
