2020 Jaguar I-pace problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar I-Pace (stylised as I-PACE) is a battery-electric crossover SUV produced by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under their Jaguar marque. The I-Pace was announced in March 2018, European deliveries began in June 2018 and North American deliveries started in October 2018. Amid slowing sales and a change in corporate vision, Jaguar has announced that the I-Pace will be discontinued by 2025.

Development

The Jaguar I-Pace was designed by Ian Callum. The concept version of the car, described as a five-seater sports car, was unveiled by JLR at the 2016 Los Angeles Motor Show and shown on-road in London in March 2017.

The I-Pace is built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, and the production version of the I-Pace was revealed in Graz on 1 March 2018.

Some of the electric drive technology has come out of the Jaguar I-Type electric Formula E racing car programme, and the concentric motors were developed by JLR engineer Dr. Alex Michaelides.

Common 2020 Jaguar I-pace problems

The Jaguar I-Pace 2020 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include:

  • Windscreen leaks: Some owners have reported water leaks around the windscreen area, which could potentially lead to more significant problems if not addressed promptly.
  • 12V battery failures: The 12-volt battery, which powers various accessories, has been reported to fail in some I-Pace vehicles. This issue has also been noted by owners of other EVs, such as the Hyundai Ionic 5 and Tesla Model 3.
  • Poor service and repair times: Many I-Pace owners have expressed dissatisfaction with Jaguar's service and repair times, with long waiting periods for parts and repairs being a common complaint.
  • Friction brake issues: A recall has been issued for I-Paces built between 23 August 2017 and 11 April 2019 due to non-compliant friction brakes that may not meet current vehicle braking regulations. A software update at a Jaguar dealer is required to rectify this issue.
  • Overall reliability: The Jaguar I-Pace has performed poorly in reliability surveys, ranking eighth out of nine cars in the electric car class in the 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey. Jaguar, as a brand, also ranks poorly, coming in 29th out of 32 manufacturers featured.

These issues are based on complaints from owners and may not represent every Jaguar I-Pace 2020 vehicle on the road. It is essential to thoroughly inspect any used vehicle before purchasing and consider these common problems as part of the evaluation process.

What is the problem with the 2020 I-Pace?

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Jaguar I-PACE vehicles. The fasteners that secure the battery module to the busbars may not have been tightened securely, which can cause electrical arcing at the busbars.

Why is the I-Pace not selling?

Jaguar has confirmed the I-Pace will be discontinued alongside all the brand's internal combustion engine (ICE) models in 2025, when the brand is re-launched. Speaking to Autocar, JLR CEO Adrian Mardell confirmed the car would be retired to give Jaguar a completely fresh start.

What is the problem with the I-Pace battery?

In May 2023, Jaguar issued a recall for 6,367 I-Paces, affecting vehicles of all model years (2019 to 2024). The recall surrounded the battery packs overheating, which could give rise to a battery fire. Jaguar says it can complete an OTA software update for the fix, though it can only be done at Jaguar centers.

Is Jaguar I-Pace Electric reliable?

Is a used Jaguar I-Pace estate reliable? The I-Pace performed poorly in our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, coming eighth out of nine cars in the electric car class. This isn't the first time it's proven itself troublesome, either, because it's been like this ever since it was initially released.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-25
  • VIN: SADHB2S12L1
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I was stopped at a stoplight, waiting to turn left. The light turned green I slowly engaged the accelerator. All occupants in the car felt the car jolt forward then the fault alarms went off. I was able to continue to drive the car safely and returned home. This is the second time this has happened within the last 30 days. The first time the vehicle bricked on me, it was towed to the Jaguar dealership in Tacoma Washington. There they reset the vehicle defaults disappeared, and it was returned to me. The first time this happened, I was turning into a parking lot and parked in a parking space. At that time the car would not go into park. I turned the vehicle off and turned it back on again. It remained in gear however the vehicle was not moving. It would not let me start it and I was unable to drive it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
  • VIN: SADHD2S11L1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: High voltage battery is over heating. Constantly getting messages stating "Traction Battery Fault Detected" when charging or when there are days of extreme heats. In addition, when charging, a loud fan like noise is present and car gets really hot. Now my car is stating "Stop Safely Battery Fault detected " right in the middle of me driving and I lost power for about 14 seconds. Power goes in and out. Although my car VIN isn't included in the NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID: 24V183000 and Jaguar's number for this recall is H484. These vehicles were previously recalled under 23V-369. My car is affected by this same issues if not more

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: SADHB2S16L1
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Several battery cells have failed and have required replacement on at least 3 occasions in this vehicle. I believe there is a fire risk and that the affected vin range of recall H484 was too narrow. Please consider widening the range of the recall to include the batch used in this vehicle as they are clearly defective as seen by the disproportionately high failure rate.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-11
  • VIN: SADHD2S17L1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I noticed a strong mildew smell in car. So I searched around car to see where smell was coming from noticed foggy moisture on windshield along with water drips. So I did some more searching and noticed front and back floor mats were wet. I pulled them up and carpet underneath was also wet. I took car to dealer in May 2024 and basically they stated they couldn’t find where water was coming from. And did I want to report water damage to my insurance company. I said ofcourse not because unknown water shouldn’t be in car. Also, Informed them I researched several websites on this 2020 Ipace and several consumers have had the same problems and issues. Again they refused to fix and told me to come get car. Ok now in July 24. I get into car was able to reverse out of parking area and then couldn’t put car into drive. So now I’m struck in alley for hours until I finally was able to put in neutral and friend pushed into a grass field. Car was towed to same dealer where now they are now stating the electrical was damaged from water. And again asked me do I want to report to my insurance again my answer was no! Due to this not being my fault and again several consumers have had the same problems. I also Informed them I leased car in 2021 and it’s under a warranty with 20,822 miles. So till this day car is in the shop and they are refusing to complete work and my lease will end 08/13/24.

  • VIN: SADHD2S18L1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I own a 2020 Jaguar I-Pace. Last year H441 software update had been installed on my car as per NHTSA guidelines. To reach of the right car started giving me trouble. I was getting loud fan noise. A few days later I got a traction battery fault notification.Since then, the car has not been charging more than 72%. I gave the car to the dealership for service. They informed me that the H441 software had identified a battery fault within the high-voltage battery and is preventing the car from charging greater than 72%. A few days later they informed me that model number 14 in the high-voltage battery pack had a fault and needs to be replaced. As per the H441 recall, Jaguar is supposed to replace the battery free of cost. But the dealership is asking me for 6979.60 USD to replace the model. When I asked them why am being charged the amount when Jaguar is supposed to replace the pack at no cost, they informed me that my car is out of warranty. As per the customer notification letter sent from Jaguar in the past, there is no mention of battery warranty being a part of the H441 recall. Currently my car is stuck at the dealership without any response from Jaguar. Please help me with the situation.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-12
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: SADHC2S16L1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was exiting a parking spot and I had my foot on the brake to start the vehicle and again to put the car in reverse. I backed out of my parking spot and turned 90 degrees to exit the parking lot. As I pushed down on the brake to stop and shift to drive, the pad that covers the brake pedal fell off, causing my foot to slip and hit the accelerator. I then struck another vehicle with the back of my car. In looking at the car after the accident, the pad that normally covers the brake pedal was on the floor of the car, between the brake and accelerator. At the body shop, one of the people said there is supposed to be a clip that holds the pad, but it was either broken or missing on my car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
  • VIN: SADHB2S15L1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Jaguar I pace has been at the dealership since September, when I received the original 441 update. After receiving the update it no longer charged and continued to have the battery fault notice. I have been told an additional update was coming and has recently been applied, however that update repaired only the fact that the vehicle is not charging, it did not repair the electrical fault. I have been told multiple times that the vehicle will be receiving a replacement battery module, only to be told that they are waiting on an additional software update that may resolve the issue, however I am now being reissued my vehicle without the recall being repaired, however according to your records my vehicle has been repaired. It has not been repaired and I have been given no timeline on its repair.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-10
  • VIN: SADHB2S15L1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: From Day 1 of purchase, I have been unable to enter the vehicle or start it easily due to a recurring failure of the Transceiver Part # T4K1278. I have had six (6) dealership visits to rectify this concern. The part (T4K8326 Antenna) has been replaced once when I was not able to open the vehicle after multiple attempts. This did not solve the issue. The last dealership visit indicated the Transceiver (T4K1278) was likely the issue but the service advisor told me that the part was not able to be imported due to inherent failure issues. JLRNA (Jaguar Land Rover of North America) has ignored dealership inquiries as well as my own for the last two years. I have been stuck outside the vehicle so many times I cannot count and I have had multiple instances where I was unable to move in traffic due to this flaw. When trying to start vehicle, the dash warning indicates that the "Smart Key" is not present in the vehicle.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-16
  • VIN: SADHD2S15L1
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Was driving vehicle downhill on a small hill in Palm Springs when multiple error messages appeared in rapid succession on the information display, including 'traction battery fault - safe to drive with caution'. This was immediately followed by "pull over and stop the car" but before I had the chance to do so ALL the systems in the car ceased to operate and all electrical systems shut down. The breaks would not work, the steering would not work. I was still traveling down hill and unable to stop the car. The car continued for approximately 1/2 a mile and went through two stop signs. Fortunately it was early morning and there were no other vehicles , or pedestrians around, if there had been I would have been unable to avoid hitting them. My safety and that of any other driver or pedestrian who could have been on the road was seriously compromised. The car finally came to rest towards the bottom of the hill and I was able to exit the vehicle. Had this happened if I was traveling at speed on a freeway, I hate to contemplate the consequences. This same problem happened about 4 weeks ago, but fortunately the total shut down occurred while the car was stationery in my garage. The dealership towed the truck then and returned it to me a few days later, saying they had resolved all the issues - but clearly not. I have no confidence in the safety of this car. The dealer is collecting the car today to return it to the Jaguar dealership in Rancho Mirage.

Negative 2020 Jaguar I-pace car reviews

  1. Berry Krajcik 2024-05-05

Sorry to hear about the issues you've had with your car. It must have been really frustrating to have so many problems so soon after buying it. I hope that the mechanic is able to fix everything and that you can start enjoying your new car soon. It's disappointing to hear that the customer service hasn't been up to scratch, but I'm sure they will do everything they can to make it right for you.

  2. William Considine 2024-05-01

The car's charging issues have been thoroughly investigated and it has been determined that it can only be charged using a DC fast charger, rather than a 220v charger at home. This information has been confirmed by the dealership.

  3. Newton Osinski 2024-01-09

I would strongly advise against getting one of these. Our experience with Pivotal has been nothing but trouble. Shortly after taking delivery, the car stopped charging midway. During our holiday in Devon, it wouldn't recharge to come home. Despite AA breakdown coming out on Saturday night, they couldn't fix it. The earliest the Jaguar JLR technician could come out was Monday morning, which meant our children could no longer claim their 100% attendance certificates for school, we both lost a day's pay, and I had paid £300 for a mock Ofsted inspection which was disadvantaged. Although the technician updated some software and it charged, we still had to take the car to the garage on Wednesday. It remains there, and I'm due to return to Devon this afternoon, but obviously, I have no car! Guy Salmon has offered a petrol car, but we really don't want this. We have been all-electric since 2014 and have had 2 Nissan Leafs and a Hyundai Ioniq - never have we had the trouble we are having with Jaguar. To make matters worse, the Jaguar customer relationship centre is closed, and the phone goes dead. I am feeling very stressed, and considering what we are paying, this is appalling.

Positive 2020 Jaguar I-pace car reviews

  1. Emmanuel Ruecker 2024-11-09

After selling thousands of new luxury cars from brands like Lexus, Acura, Maserati, Mercedes, Porsche, Jaguar, and Range Rover for 15 years, I thought I had seen it all. But then, while getting my F-Pace serviced, I saw the showroom model of the I Pace and fell in love. It's like a stealth fighter with an attractive front spoiler and a price tag that's half of Tesla's. With its sub-4 second acceleration, gorgeous control stack, and selectable drive modes, it appeals to everyone from crossover utility intenders to the middle-aged crowd. I can charge it to over 200 miles of range in just an hour with the must-have 240v upgrade charger. The warranty covers the 90kw, 550ft lbs of torque battery system for 8 years or 100,000 miles against 20% degradation in range. I love its seamless innovation and limited build that keeps the Porsche/AMG crowd guessing. The steering begs you to do a race track event. Lastly, Jaguar's I Pace Concierge Service provides lifetime synthetic oil changes, transmission fluids, belts, and replacement graphene/titanium plugs (worth $10,000) and unlimited complimentary replacement of the iridium dual sports converter and tuned active output exhaust system (even if you bump a curb or damage it for any reason at all) valued at $12,250! Please note that all items mentioned after the * are a little electric vehicle joke, as there are no plugs, exhaust, transmission, or need for oil changes. Gotcha!

  2. Ari Renner 2024-11-06

This is an incredible first attempt by Jaguar to give Tesla a run for its money. I have the First Edition, which is fully loaded with some great tech. The power delivery is incredible and it can beat a 100D from a standstill. Personally, I think the external styling and interior are much better than all electric vehicles currently available. I have already used the foot-gesture to open the rear hatch with both hands full of groceries and it works great! The self-driving mode is excellent and maintains the center of the lane and auto-stops and accelerates nearly identical to a Tesla. Overall, I love this car/sub/crossover and my z06 is seriously getting jealous sitting in the garage. The only downside I see thus far is the infotainment center controls. The interface looks great visually but is laggy and rather disorganized. I'm sure Jaguar will fix this with some over the air software updates. Mileage will vary. I live in a mountain area and I get about 200 miles to a full charge on eco mode. In performance mode and blasting off at every stop light reduces total miles significantly.

  3. Elmore Yost 2024-10-19

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2020 I-Pace HSE version, but I've been having some trouble charging it with a Type 2 wallbox charger at voltage 237V. However, I've had no issues with DC fast charging. I reached out to the service team and they provided a new update, but unfortunately, the issue persists.

  4. Jerald Zemlak 2024-10-18

With a real luxurious interior, blazing fast speed, and the beautiful design of an exotic prototype, you can't go wrong. Although, my only dislike is the push button transmission. It's been 6 months and I still find it difficult to use. Other than that, it's a perfect vehicle.

  5. Jeromy Cruickshank 2024-10-01

Hi there! Congratulations on your second EV vehicle! I'm glad to hear that you've had a great experience with it so far. The fit and finish are outstanding, and it's great to hear that you've had no issues after driving 20,000 miles in 2 years. It's especially impressive that it performs well in the winter! One-pedal driving is also a great feature. I understand that the infotainment system can be a bit awkward and take some time to get used to, but I'm glad to hear that it has been improved. The only other thing you mentioned is that you wish the max DC charging was higher, perhaps 150+. Overall, it sounds like you've had a great experience with this vehicle! Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.
