2019 Jaguar I-pace problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar I-Pace (stylised as I-PACE) is a battery-electric crossover SUV produced by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) under their Jaguar marque. The I-Pace was announced in March 2018, European deliveries began in June 2018 and North American deliveries started in October 2018. Amid slowing sales and a change in corporate vision, Jaguar has announced that the I-Pace will be discontinued by 2025.

Development

The Jaguar I-Pace was designed by Ian Callum. The concept version of the car, described as a five-seater sports car, was unveiled by JLR at the 2016 Los Angeles Motor Show and shown on-road in London in March 2017.

The I-Pace is built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, and the production version of the I-Pace was revealed in Graz on 1 March 2018.

Some of the electric drive technology has come out of the Jaguar I-Type electric Formula E racing car programme, and the concentric motors were developed by JLR engineer Dr. Alex Michaelides.

Common 2019 Jaguar I-pace problems

The 2019 Jaguar I-PACE has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most prevalent issues is related to the car's electronics, which are described as unreliable and prone to glitches, lock-ups, and reboots. This includes the onboard infotainment and connectivity systems, which have been reported to have bugs and issues that Jaguar has attempted to fix through software updates. However, some owners have reported that these updates have not fully resolved the problems, leading to frustration and dissatisfaction.

Another common problem with the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE is related to the car's range. Despite the manufacturer's claims of a 292-mile range, many owners have reported that they struggle to achieve even 220 miles on a single charge.

Some owners have also reported issues with the car's electric engines, including loud braking noises and breakdowns with relatively low mileage. In some cases, these issues have required the car to be towed away for extended periods of time, leading to frustration and inconvenience for the owners.

Finally, some owners have reported issues with the car's reliability, including problems with the steering wheel and battery issues that required the car to be kept at the dealer for extended periods of time. These issues have led to concerns about the car's overall build quality and long-term durability.

In summary, the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE has been reported to have several common problems, including unreliable electronics, issues with the car's range and charging system, problems with the car's electric engines, and concerns about the car's reliability and build quality. These issues have led to frustration and dissatisfaction among some owners, and have raised questions about the car's overall value and long-term viability as a luxury electric vehicle.

What is the problem with I-Pace?

Some owners have reported malfunctioning charging ports and general problems with charging. That said, the electric drivetrain is at least largely free of moving parts and the interior feels strongly assembled – but I-Pace owning Parkers readers report poor reliability in their reviews of the car.

Is Jaguar I-Pace expensive to maintain?

Unfortunately, servicing remains expensive because, despite the I-Pace only requiring attention every two years or 21,000 miles, a three-year servicing plan costs around £1,000. We'd recommend consulting your Jaguar dealership about individual servicing costs before opting for this, as they might be cheaper.

Is Jaguar I-Pace Electric reliable?

Is a used Jaguar I-Pace estate reliable? The I-Pace performed poorly in our 2023 What Car? Reliability Survey, coming eighth out of nine cars in the electric car class. This isn't the first time it's proven itself troublesome, either, because it's been like this ever since it was initially released.

What happened to the Jaguar I-Pace?

The Jaguar I-Pace will not be part of the firm's all-electric line-up, even as a bridging model, and will be taken off sale before the firm's relaunch in 2025 - along with the rest of the current model range.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • VIN: SADHD2S17K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Jaguar dealer implemented what they said was a H514 interim recall update remedy on my 2019 I-Pace while it was in for other repairs. This remedy action is stated on this web site to "have their maximum state of charge altered to80%". Not less than or more than 80%. My dealer apparently gave a false high temperature signal to the current H441 software in my car and the car tripped to prevent charging > 72%. This brings in a large message on the dash "Traction Battery Fault". Jaguar is apparently taking a shortcut that does not meet their stated response to the NHTSB as to what they will do for the interim update. Truthfulness in Jaguars reporting to the NHTSB is in doubt due to this action.

  • Summary: Inquiry Regarding Safety Recall and Manufacturer Responsability Dear NHTSA, I am seeking your assistance regarding a vehicle I imported from the United States to Iceland. The vehicle, Jaguar i-pace 2019, has been identified as having a defective and dangerous battery, which is part of a safety recall in the U.S. Despite this, the manufacturer’s representative in Iceland refuses to honor the recall or provide a replacement battery, citing that the car is no longer in the U.S. Given the serious safety risks, I would appreciate guidance on what steps I can take or what recourse I have. Is there any possibility to enforce the recall or ensure the manufacturer takes responsibility even outside the U.S.? Thank you for your assistance. • Summary: On July 9, 2024, I contacted the Jaguar Columbia dealership in Columbia, South Carolina to schedule an appointment for the recall service. I spoke with Tabor in the service department who told me that Jamie Alexander, the dealership’s shop manager, advised him that Jaguar Columbia is not EV certified and the dealership does not have the equipment to complete the safety recall repair. On that same date, I contacted Jaguar’s Customer Relationship Center (as listed on the safety recall notice) to report the matter and ask for resolution. I was advised that there is an open case with Jaguar’s consumer affairs department that was started on July 1st. I was advised that the Customer relationship center could do nothing to help me because of the existence of this case that Jaguar has open. I have not been contacted by Jaguar regarding the status of the case and when I asked the Jaguar customer center for information to contact the Jaguar consumer affairs department, I was advised that the customer relationship center does not have any contact information for the Jaguar consumer affairs department. I would like to be contacted immediately by Jaguar regarding acceptable resolution.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: SADHD2S16K1
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I turned my vehicle on and it showed a Gearbox Fault Detected message. I was able to put the car in reverse and accelerate to 2 MPH while reversing. The car began to slow down even with my foot on the accelerator as if there was no power. I was fully reversed out of my parking spot and went to put the car in drive as I was in the middle of the very busy parking lot with cars waiting on either side to continue driving. The car would then turn on the parking break as I pressed the accelerator, no matter which gear I was in. I was stranded at an angle, causing traffic to be delayed with cars backed up all the way to both entrances of the parking lot and vehicles in the street at a complete stop to enter with a 40MPH speed limit. I had to get my vehicle towed to Jaguar Dealer Service and after diagnostic the harness for the Parking Pawl has failed and needs to be replaced. If I had been reversing out of my home into the street, or really anywhere else than the parking lot I was in, I would have caused an accident. We’re lucky an accident wasn’t caused from people being stopped in the street.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-30
  • VIN: SADHC2S15K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Since purchasing our vehicle, we have been beset with several problems. The battery system to the vehicle has been malfunctioning consistently since at least June of 2022. The entire electrical system in the vehicle did not respond. We had to have the vehicle towed to the local Jaguar dealer. In June of 2023, we had another instance where the car was not coming on and we had been receiving notification about a “traction battery fault.” We again had to get the car towed to the local Jaguar dealer because the vehicle was inoperable. We were told that the electrical battery and the auxiliary battery needed to be replaced after a service inspection on June 30, 2023 and “that is why the vehicle would not start up for us.” We received notice on June 28, 2023 along with other Jaguar I-Pace owners about an open recall of the electric SUVs made from 2019 to 2024 in the United States. The recall notice number [XXX] was issued after the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that “The high-voltage battery overheating increases the risk of a fire.” The NHTSA required the following remedy that “the battery energy control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update. In addition, battery modules will be replaced as necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge.” Our car received an OTA update to the software of the vehicle following the NHTSA recall and was cleared for pick-up on [XXX]. Yet, this did not solve the problems with the car. The battery problems have only become more severe with the vehicle. In December of 2023, we again experienced an issue where we got a “traction battery default” message. We took the car into the local Jaguar dealer out of fear of an electrical failure and the car becoming inoperable once again. The car stayed at the local dealer for over a month. The local Jaguar dealer informed us that the parts to replace the battery were on back order. Please see attached letter. • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-20
  • VIN: SADHD2S11K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Concerning NHTSA ID Number: 11494560 Since filing the complaint in Nov 2022, the vehicle has had its parking assist module replaced, it was updated with latest software, and other camera software updated and calibrated. All of this was due to corruption and loss of functioning of all cameras when the software remedy for NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V709000 was installed. The problem of no backup and forward cameras remains. Conditions on 20 December 2023: 42F in garage. Destination 12.9 miles away. Arrived at destination with car reporting 21F degrees. Neither forward nor backup cameras worked; no images and no trajectory lines. Camera symbols on display indicate they are not available. After a 33 minute stop, got back in car, car reports still 21F degrees, backup camera now works, and forward camera does not. Drove back home (13.2 miles) and found backup camera works but forward camera is black screen with parking trajectory lines. It needs to be investigated for failure to comply with standards.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Front and rear cameras inoperative below 32F. This happens every winter. Car parked in warm garage overnight. Back out and drive sufficient miles (at least 10?) and find cameras "unavailable" per display message. Cameras in side mirrors work though. The lack of the back up camera violates the FMVSS requirement for the camera to activate within 2 seconds of reverse engagement. I have not yet reported this to the dealer as it requires cold weather conditions to reproduce.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-28
  • VIN: SADHD2S15K1
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The BCCM in a high number of 2019 Jaguar iPace cars are going bad. The BCCM is the main charging component of the vehicle that controls the electrical system and creates a huge hazard and series of malfunctions when it goes bad. It renders the car immobile and you can not charge it. The dealerships and Jaguar North America refuse to recognize this. There is a significant backorder of these parts because of this issue and the dealership mentioned to me that they see this issue ALL THE TIME. Jaguar should be recalling this part for those of us, like myself, whose car is out of warranty.

Negative 2019 Jaguar I-pace car reviews

  1. Colt VonRueden 2024-09-09

I purchased a 2019 I-Pace because I was looking for a luxury EV. I was impressed with the design and the sales reps at my local dealership. In fact, I was so impressed that I purchased a second vehicle, a F-Type that same week. However, I did experience some issues with the I-Pace within two months of purchase. The car began to shake, not turn on even with a full battery, stall, brakes malfunctioning, and every warning light being illuminated. Despite four separate visits to the service department, Jaguar could not find the problem. They even recommended I lemon law it. It was frustrating to read reviews and discover that even Jaguar had severe concerns that the quality of their vehicles was sub par. To this date, I am still having issues and my lemon law claim is still pending. I hope Jaguar can address these issues and improve their product.

I leased a 2019 iPace 10 months ago. Despite the issues I have faced, I remain confident in the abilities of the dealership to resolve the problems with the intelligent braking system and air conditioning/defrost. I trust that they are working diligently with the factory to find a solution and I am hopeful that the car will soon be fully functional.

Positive 2019 Jaguar I-pace car reviews

The I-Pace is a stunning vehicle that offers impressive speed, comfort, and efficiency. Although there were some initial software and hardware issues, Jaguar has since released numerous software fixes, resulting in a nearly flawless car. While there are still a few minor infotainment issues, they do not detract from the overall experience. Driving the I-Pace is a joy, and its sleek design is truly eye-catching. While cold temperatures can reduce the range from 230 to 180 miles, this was not a problem for me as most of my driving is in the city. After 10 months of ownership, I still find myself looking for excuses to take my I-Pace out for a spin.

This is an incredible first attempt by Jaguar to give Tesla a run for its money. I have the First Edition, which is fully loaded with some great tech. The power delivery is incredible and it can beat a 100D from a standstill. Personally, I think the external styling and interior are much better than all electric vehicles currently available. I have already used the foot-gesture to open the rear hatch with both hands full of groceries and it works great! The self-driving mode is excellent and maintains the center of the lane and auto-stops and accelerates nearly identical to a Tesla. Overall, I love this car/sub/crossover and my z06 is seriously getting jealous sitting in the garage. The only downside I see thus far is the infotainment center controls. The interface looks great visually but is laggy and rather disorganized. I'm sure Jaguar will fix this with some over the air software updates. Mileage will vary. I live in a mountain area and I get about 200 miles to a full charge on eco mode. In performance mode and blasting off at every stop light reduces total miles significantly.

Please consider that the Edmunds test drive may have occurred prior to key software upgrades.

Congratulations on your purchase! A used 2019 with 19k miles sounds like a great find. It's wonderful to hear that you're enjoying the 20 inch wheels with air suspension and two electric motors that really pull. While the infotainment may have its drawbacks, it's great that Carplay and Android Auto make it work for you. The styling and 12 way seats sound fantastic too! It's reassuring to know that range is not an issue for you, and that you've mapped out long trips with many decent options for public DCFC in your state. Happy driving!

UPDATE: I am still loving this car at 11000 miles with no major issues. It is the best EV and car on the market. The I-Pace is fast, stylish, cutting edge, comfortable, and efficient. It is awesome in every single way. The Edmunds reviewers needed to put the car into high-regen mode to get one-pedal driving and smooth braking. The car cuts through traffic like a shark on steroids. You will hit 105 without even realizing it. At that speed, the I-Pace is rock steady, quiet, and just plain delicious. The self-driving feature takes the strain off traffic and long-distance travel while still keeping you alert. The long wheelbase and short length mean tons of interior space and an excellent ride. The air suspension lifts so you can hop the curb in the urban battlefield or ford a stream as you see fit. Then it can lower to let grandma in easily. The only downside is that it's expensive, but it's worth every penny. This is the best car I've ever driven or owned. BMW and Mercedes can't compete with this Jag. Tesla? Go read the horror stories on Tesla Motors Club. There are several new ones every single day, and they keep getting worse. The only coming competitor is the Taycan, and that not only will be more expensive, it won't have the versatility of a crossover. EQC? EQSlower and smaller inside, because it's a GLC, not a bespoke EV platform. The same goes for the Audi eTron. If you can afford an I-Pace, you can afford plane tickets. Charging is not an issue, you plug it in at night and it's full the next day. Don't be a fool sitting at a Supercharger, bragging about how you saved $10 by spending 60 minutes in a parking lot. This is the BEST. CAR. EVER!
