The Audi Q8 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV coupé made by Audi that was launched in 2018. It is the flagship of the Audi SUV line, and is being produced at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant.

Overview

BMW launched its coupe SUV in 2008, the BMW X6, and Mercedes-Benz followed suit in 2015 with the GLE-Class Coupe. Audi never made a direct competitor but had been planning to once the new body style became a sales success for other brands.

The Q8 is the first SUV model under Audi's new head of design, Marc Lichte, and introduced a new design language for the brand's SUVs. The grill is larger and now has an octagonal shape, with both vertical and horizontal slats. The Q8 features full-laser headlamps and taillamps. The interior features the knob-less MMI system, three touch screens, and an enlarged virtual cockpit which has a fully digital instrument cluster. Additionally, both haptic and acoustic feedback are provided in response to user inputs, although the design can still lead to distracted driving.

The Q8 is slightly shorter than the Q7 in terms of both length and height but is slightly wider. It also has less cargo space than the Q7 due to its sloped roofline, and unlike the Q7, the Q8 is not available with third-row seats. According to the Volkswagen Group's product strategy the Audi Q8 shares its platform with the Lamborghini Urus, among other products.

European models went on sale in July 2018 and arrived at dealers in August 2018. Common 2019 Audi Q8 problems

The 2019 Audi Q8 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are the details of the issues:

  • Transmission Problems: Another common issue with the 2019 Audi Q8 is the vehicle's failure to accelerate when the gas pedal is applied, especially when coming to or from a stop. This delay in response can put drivers at risk when trying to cross traffic, accelerate from a stop sign, or turn left during oncoming traffic. This issue appears to be intermittent but is becoming more prevalent, causing concern for many owners.
  • Power Train Complaints: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received 39 complaints about the powertrain of the 2019 Audi Q8. This issue can significantly impact the vehicle's performance and reliability, making it a concern for potential buyers.
  • Electrical System Complaints: The NHTSA has also received 28 complaints about the electrical system of the 2019 Audi Q8. One owner claimed to face a scary situation when their car suddenly shut down on the highway, leaving them trapped inside as the doors wouldn't open. These issues, while mild, are worth remembering when shopping for a used 2019 Q8.
  • Software Issues: Audi has faced criticism for its software and programming, with many owners reporting electronic gremlins and issues with pedal tip-in, transmission response, and the all-glass control setup. These issues can make the vehicle less user-friendly and more frustrating to operate, detracting from the overall driving experience.
  • Belt Starter Generator (BSG) Failure: There is an unknown issue causing premature BSG failure in the 2019 Audi Q8, which can affect the vehicle's performance and reliability. Carrying a spare BSG is one workaround suggested by owners, but this is not an ideal solution.

In conclusion, the 2019 Audi Q8 has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of, including engine issues, transmission problems, power train complaints, electrical system complaints, software issues, and BSG failure. These issues can significantly impact the vehicle's performance, reliability, and overall driving experience.

  • VIN: WA1FVAF16KD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving down the freeway to the dealership a electrical system malfunction message came across the display. I continued on to the dealership and suddenly started getting system failures. One by one it popped up and said every single system failure including brakes and steering system malfunctions. Then it said transmission malfunction and I immediately lost all forward propulsion. The engine just revved when I hit the gas. I had to fight my way over to the shoulder where the vehicle came to a stop and would not even let me set the parking brake or engage park. I sat I the vehicle on the freeway between an on ramp and the moving lanes until the tow truck showed up. The failure turned out to be the alternator which I'm told is a very common issue for most audi vehicles. The vehicle was towed to the dealership and they replaced the alternator at no charge due to an extended warranty already granted on the failing alternators. The repair was made and vehicle was returned but the same alternator was put into the vehicle that was in it originally as it has not been updated. This created a major safety risk as power was lost while traveling at freeway speeds.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-09
  • VIN: WA1FVAF17KD
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I am the owner of a 2019 Audi Q8, purchased on 8-8-19. I have had repeated issues with the driver's side seatbelt twisting and retracting the twisted portion up into the B pillar. I have had this issue repaired 3 separate times at my local dealership, most recently in June of 2023. Just 2 weeks after having it repaired, it twisted for the fourth time in early July. It has therefore been witnessed and documented by the dealership each time it has been repaired. The issue has never happened to me and has always happened after my husband has driven my car. So I cannot tell you what exactly is happening to cause this. There is a TSB regarding this problem. It is NHTSA ID Number: 10233615 published on 3-29-23 (the original TSB was NHTSA # 10158643 published on 4-1-19). The Manufacturer Communication Number: A6923872058455_6 I am concerned that there could be a safety issue while the seatbelt is in this twisted state. Thankfully I have not been in any accidents/incidents where the seatbelt malfunctioned. But how can I confidently be assured that the seatbelt will continue to function properly? It is not normal for a seatbelt to due this. I contacted my dealership on July 21 to have it repaired again under warranty, but they told me that I would have to pay to have it fixed again. They claim that it was never covered under warranty and that they repaired it each time for free. This was the first I had heard that is wasn't covered under my warranty. I escalated this issue to Audi of America, reference #05805277. I heard back today that the dealer claims "outside influence" as the cause of this seatbelt problem. Therefore, they will not repair it as it does not constitute a manufacturer's defect. I do not feel safe driving with my seatbelt in this condition. I am hoping that the NHTSA can guide me in the right direction for a resolution to this matter.

Negative 2019 Audi Q8 car reviews

  1. Timmy Berge 2024-08-23

Make sure you are aware of a fault light that may continue to come on and stay on. This is a warning light indicating that your oil level is too high and instructing you to release some oil from the oil chamber. According to an Audi specialist, this is a recent issue that Audi is acknowledging in some of their newer model cars. If you don't drive the car far enough, moisture builds up in the oil chamber, triggering the 'overfill' sensors and turning on a false warning light. However, the engine is never in danger of oil spilling and causing any sort of damage. The specialist is hopeful that Audi Motors will fix the problem. The car is very nice, but has a weak launch at the start.

  2. Dashawn Aufderhar 2024-06-26

Hey there! Just a quick reminder to take your time. Remember, things aren't always as difficult as they may seem at first glance.

  3. Keaton Turner 2024-06-15

The SUV is beautiful inside and out. Once you get rolling, the drive is wonderful! It could benefit from a little more power and torque, perhaps an additional 30 horsepower. However, there are a few issues that could be improved. The turbo response time could be quicker, and the oil-overfilled warning light has a faulty system design, which Audi has acknowledged in a TSB but has yet to provide a fix. Additionally, the auto stop & start feature cuts off a bit too quickly while still rolling, causing a rough start-up and exacerbating the turbo lag.

  2. Barry Lesch 2024-09-18

I purchased this car in 2019 after trading in my 2016 GLE 400. The ride quality and noise levels are significantly better than my previous car, and the air suspension option is fantastic. The four-wheel steering makes this large vehicle very maneuverable at low speeds. The luxury pack adds massaging seats and upgraded materials that really elevate this car to flagship status. My only complaints are that the driver assist features are not much better than my older generation Mercedes, and the wireless CarPlay often does not automatically connect. Additionally, most of the infotainment functions are locked out when the car is in motion, even for the passenger. Lastly, the touchscreens always attract fingerprints. Overall, I believe that the Q8 is one of the most comfortable and luxurious cars available for under $100k. I never thought I would consider a “coupe” SUV, but the Q8 does not feel like a compromise.

  3. Dorian Jones 2024-08-14

I’ve had my Q8 for 5 years now and, other than the tires being replaced earlier than expected and a faulty sensor in year 2, I couldn’t be happier. It has more power than I need, more luxury than I deserve, and it's the nicest ride I’ve experienced compared to other cars in its class. It's still going strong and looking great!

  4. Mohammad Heidenreich 2024-07-07

This is a pretty big vehicle that handles really well. Just be careful because it can be quite fast on the highway. The technology is fantastic and very user-friendly. It may be a bit slow to get going from a standstill, but I found that disengaging the auto stop/start feature helped with this issue. Plus, the sound system is amazing for those long drives!

  5. Mateo Lynch 2024-06-24

I've had the car for 3 weeks and I absolutely love the look! It's different than most others on the road. The car is very comfortable and quiet, which is great. Although I'm still learning to use all the tech, I'm very happy with my first Audi. I've had almost every other luxury brand SUV and I'm glad I made the choice.
