Common 2014 Toyota Tundra problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2014 Toyota Tundra, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Airbag Issues: Owners have raised concerns about airbag problems, emphasizing the importance of airbags in collisions. Even minor issues with airbag components can lead to system failure, prompting numerous recalls over the years.
  2. Seat Issues: Complaints include seats deteriorating over time, occasional slipping out of control, rust on seat frame rails, and rear seat brackets causing parts to burn through the seats, potentially leading to fires.
  3. Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Issues: Both older and newer Toyota Tundra models have experienced problems with the TPMS. The system's light may stay on, indicating issues with recalibration, affecting the monitoring of tire pressure.
  4. Fuel Pump Failure: The fuel pump, crucial for delivering fuel to the engine for combustion, has been a problematic component in various Toyota models, including the Tundra. Symptoms of a failing fuel pump include poor performance, stalling, and jittering.
  5. Rust Problems: Certain steel parts in the Toyota Tundra, such as the door seals, bed, and suspension parts, are prone to rusting. This issue led to a significant lawsuit against Toyota, resulting in a substantial settlement.
  6. Uncontrolled Sudden Accelerations: Some models from 2008 to 2010 experienced accelerator pedal issues, leading to uncontrollable forward thrust. This issue prompted recalls due to safety concerns.
  7. Camshaft Oil Leaks: Owners of 2010 and later models reported oil leaks through the cam towers, affecting various engine sizes. The problem is attributed to ineffective seals, potentially causing fire hazards.
  8. Air Injection Pump Issues: Models from 2008 to 2012 faced failures with the secondary air injection pump, leading to the vehicle going into limp mode. Toyota extended the warranty for this problem, but no recall was issued.
  9. Turbocharger Issues: The 2022 Toyota Tundra experienced turbocharger wastegate failures, impacting engine performance. The turbocharger's role in regulating exhaust gas can lead to power issues if not functioning correctly.

These reported problems highlight various concerns that owners of the 2014 Toyota Tundra have faced, ranging from safety-related issues like airbags and sudden accelerations to mechanical challenges with components like the fuel pump and turbocharger.

  • Summary: I bought my 2014 Toyota Tundra in March 2014, with no chips or peeling paint. Fast-forward a couple of months, the paint around the top side of the windshield is chipping and peeling. Living in a state that gets snow & ice, I am concerned about the potential for rust. Toyota is aware of the issue with their Super White paint with other models (Service Bulletin 23TE08), such as the following: 2008–2009 Lexus GX 470 2008–2017 Toyota Avalon 2008–2017 Toyota Camry 2008–2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid 2008–2017 Toyota RAV4 2009–2018 Toyota Corolla 2010–2015 Toyota 4Runner 2011–2015 Scion xB 2012–2015 Scion iQ It is nonsensical to omit other models using the same Super White paint from this recall.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-17
  • VIN: 5TFUY5F14EX
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Found Truck bed floor rust corrosion in the bed of 2014 tundra. Bed has localized corrosion and rust perforation in specific areas on the top side of the bed. Bed assembly does not appear to have been properly sealed using hemming and sealing procedures outlined in CRIB bulletin:163 sealing Hem-flanges and body seams. The truck bed underside is rust free except where the bed sections were welded and sealed together. Truck is garage kept and has been undercoated with fluid film annually since I purchased in 2017. Truck only has 45,800 miles on it. Rust is forming in between the seems and spreading under the bed supports and around the bolts that secure the bed to the truck frame. I am concerned that the bed may become loose and fall off while driving down the highway if not replaced or repaired properly. Toyota had a TSB 0101-12 for older model tundras years 2007-2011. The service manager at my local Toyota dealership acknowledges the issue and agrees that the issue is unacceptable. Dealer also stated that this issue is common on generation 3 Tundra vehicles. I am currently working with Toyota Customer care to resolve this safety concern. Local dealer will not authorize repair due to vehicle age even though issue is a manufacturing defect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-13
  • VIN: 5TFBY5F18EX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: In the course of cleaning my vehicle, I noticed corrosion on edge of door sill (emanating from under inside rubber door seal) of my 2014 Toyota Tundra on June 13, 2021. After removing the plastic scuff plate and rubber door seal, it was apparent that openings from the underside of the vehicle into the cabin are present from the design/manufacturing process - these opening are not sealed. The openings are not a result of corrosion but rather are associated with the geometry of the floor pan at the floor pan to rocker pinch weld - it is not a sealed surface. After removing the rubber seal I was able to look downward into the openings and see daylight from the underside of the cabin. Electrical cabling is immediately adjacent to these openings beneath the plastic scuff plate. It was apparent that the openings permit water and salt infiltration into the cabin, and would appear to be the primary cause of corrosion and build up of salt residues in the cabin and door sill area. My first impression was the condition that I observed was a manufacturing defect. On reflection many questions came to mind including: was the infiltration of water, salt and potentially exhaust through the openings in the floor pan going to have safety consequences - would the deterioration of the body structure as a result of corrosion have consequences in the event of a crash, or would the potential infiltration of exhaust gases affect the safety of cabin occupants? In following up the dealer and manufacturer over the last week, no resolution has been found . Owing to the age I was advised that there was no warranty coverage. The dealer reportedly inspected other Tundras and the design/manufacturing conditions (ie. opening in the floor pan) were the same as I had observed. It was only through my own initiative that I identified a Manufacturer Communication (NHTSA ID 10173991) that shed some light on the issue.

IN MY RESEARCH I FOUND THAT IT STILL CONTINUES TO BE AN ISSUE EVEN IN LATER MODELS. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA THAT IF THEY KNOW THIS IS A CONSISTENT ISSUE THAT THEY SHOULD RECALL THE PART. SINCE I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY WITH LIMITED POWER I HAD TO USE MY HAZARD LIGHTS UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO GET TO A SAFE LOCATION.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-10-18
  • VIN: 5TFUY5F11EX
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: TRUCK WAS IN TOYOTA SHOP IN VERMONT FOR STALLING OF VEHICLE. THOUGHT IT WAS FUEL PUMP DUE TO RECENT RECALL - SPECIFICALLY ASKED IF IT COULD BE THAT AND WAS TOLD NO. THEY FOUND MICE NEST IN INTAKE MANIFOLD, KNOCK SENSOR WAS FOUND TO BE CHEWED, AND REPLACED. ONCE I RECEIVED MY VEHICLE, IT CONTINUED TO DO THE SAME THING AFTER 2 DAYS. UPON LOOKING UNDER THE HOOD, FOUND THAT THE AIR INTAKE FILTER WAS LEFT OFF. I FIXED THAT, AND THEN THE SAME ISSUE STARTING OCCURRING AGAIN. HAD TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO DIFFERENT SHOP (TO TRUSTED MECHANIC) THEY HAVE FOUND AFTER REPLACING THE BATTERY AND A MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, THAT IT IS TRULY IN FACT THE FUEL PUMP. THEY TESTED FUEL PUMP AND IT'S ONLY PUTTING OUT 20PSI INSTEAD OF 40. I CALLED TOYOTA, BUT THEY ARE CLAIMING THAT ONLY THE NEWER TOYOTAS ARE AFFECTED, BUT ON THE RECALL LIST IT GOES BACK TO 2013 IN DIFFERENT MODELS. THIS SEEMS SIMILAR TO THE ISSUE SUBARU WAS HAVING WITH THEIR AIR BAGS. MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, SHOULD NOT JUST BE ASSUMING THAT THIS COULDN'T BE CORRELATED WITH FAULTY FUEL PUMP. MY VEHICLES SYMPTOMS ARE THE SAME AS WHAT THE RECALL HAS STATED HAPPENS. BEFORE DENYING ME ANYTHING, THEY SHOULD BE WILLING TO AT LEAST INVESTIGATE AND LOOK AT MY VEHICLE. IT'S ALSO SUSPICIOUS TO ME THAT MY VEHICLE STARTED DOING THIS ABOUT 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO A HUGE SAFETY RECALL COMING OUT IN REGARDS TO FUEL PUMPS.

THIS IS A RESULT OF THEM NOT APPLYING ENOUGH SEALANT AT THE FACTORY, WHICH WAS CONFIRMED TO ME BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA REFUSES TO COVER THE ISSUES EVEN THOUGH THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ISSUE ONLINE, CLASS ACTION SUITS HAVE BEEN OPENED AND THERE IS A PETITION ONLINE TO GET THEM TO RECALL THIS ISSUE WITH OVER 6,000 SIGNATURES. Negative 2014 Toyota Tundra car reviews

  1. Dion Lesch 2024-03-28

It's alright for a truck, but it definitely handles like one. It's a bit embarrassing when a Honda Civic can out-accelerate, out-turn, and out-run me.

  2. Ewald Sauer 2024-02-05

I owned a 2011 Tundra Double cab SR5 with TRD package and it was a wonderful truck. However, when the new style came out in 2014, I decided to upgrade to a crew max, Limited with TRD package. Although the truck is great, I have noticed a few issues. Firstly, the 26 gallon tank is not large enough for the amount of fuel the 5.7 engine uses. Secondly, I have noticed that the fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge and transmission temp gauge are not very accurate. Additionally, the Bluetooth audio quality is poor, even with the JBL system with NAV. When I turn up the volume to a good listening level, the door panels start buzzing. Unfortunately, the 2014 model in the Limited trim no longer has a power passenger side front seat. I feel that Toyota has cheapened the Tundra and the quality they boast about is not reflected in my truck. On August 8, 2015, with only 10,600 miles on the truck, the windshield cracked at the top and continued towards the passenger side. I notified the dealer, but they refused to do anything about it. I also contacted Toyota Care, but I have not heard back from them in over a month. I am disappointed with the service I have received and have decided that this will be my last Toyota. Thank you for taking the time to read my feedback.

Positive 2014 Toyota Tundra car reviews

  1. Jettie O'Keefe 2025-01-06

This vehicle will reliably get you wherever you need to go. You can haul anything, anywhere without the issues commonly experienced with other brands. I have personally hauled loads of over 10,000 lbs through challenging terrain and extreme temperatures, and the Tundra never faltered. While I used to be a Chevy guy, I am now a Toyota fan for life! The Tundra doesn't even burn a drop of oil and still looks as good as new after 5,000 miles of heavy use.

This is a great truck that can handle anything you ask of it, especially off-road and towing. However, I think Toyota could improve their higher end models by offering more features such as a heated steering wheel, adjustable pedals, and adaptive cruise. Additionally, it would be great if Toyota could add different axle ratios like a 3.55 or a 3.31 to give customers the ability to get better gas mileage while sacrificing some towing ability that they may not need. Overall, this is a great truck with excellent value, thanks to Toyota's legendary reliability and dependability, as well as resale value, especially when compared to other manufacturers like Ford. For example, a fully loaded Platinum Tundra is about $52,000, while a fully loaded Platinum F-150 is about $63,000, making it a great value for the price. Toyota is an innovative manufacturer that could benefit from offering more options for consumers.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my second Tundra. My first one was an '08, and after looking at the 'Big 3', I couldn't find a deal that matched what Toyota offered me. While the gas mileage is 'Truck' rated, I find it to be quite acceptable. The ride is great and it tows like a dream. On the highway, it feels like a car, but on dirt roads, it's definitely more aggressive. Overall, I'm very happy with the product. Thanks, Toyota! By the way, can I get my $20 for this great review? Just kidding! :)

I owned a 4.7 2007 double cab. It took me a while to warm up to the new model, but there are definitely some things I like about it. The interior is vastly improved, with better radio, controls, and vents. The seats are also better, with higher quality fabric and a slightly wider design that makes them more comfortable overall. This time, I opted for the 5.7 and I'm really enjoying it. Despite a previous reviewer's complaint about low mpg, I actually got 15.5 in mostly city driving on my first tank, and I expect it to improve even more. While the 5.7 is different from the 4.6 or 4.7, it has seemingly endless power above 1500 rpm, which is really impressive.
