2018 Jaguar F-type problems

jaguar logo

The Jaguar F-Type (X152) is a series of two-door, two-seater grand tourers manufactured by British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover under their Jaguar Cars marque since 2013. The car's JLR D6a platform is based on a shortened version of the XK's platform. It is the so-called "spiritual successor" to the famous E-Type.

The car was launched initially as a 2-door soft-top convertible, with a 2-door fastback coupé version launched in 2013. The F-Type underwent a facelift for the 2021 model year. It was unveiled in December 2019, featuring a significantly restyled front end and dashboard, and simplified drivetrain options. Jaguar announced that the F-Type will be discontinued after the 2024 model year.

F-Type concept (2000)

The F-Type concept was a two-seat speedster with a 3.0-litre V6 engine from the S-Type saloon conceived to compete against light weight sports cars, such as the Porsche Boxster. Geoff Lawson, Jaguar's Head of Design, had been working on the development of the car, leading a team of three designers namely Keith Helfet, Adam Hatton and Pasi Pennanen. His sudden death in 1999 led Ian Callum, the new Head of Design, to continue the project who would present the finalised concept car to the general public at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show to a positive response due to its retro styling which recalled Jaguar automobiles of the 1950s and 60s. At its introduction, the car was quoted to be available with a manual or automatic transmission and an optional all-wheel-drive system. Budget cuts by parent company Ford led Jaguar to pursue its efforts in Formula-One and by 2002, the F-Type project was cancelled due to its failure to meet production feasibility.

Common 2018 Jaguar F-type problems

The Jaguar F-Type, introduced in 2014, is a two-door luxury sports car that has gained popularity for its impressive performance and stylish design. However, it is not without its share of issues, particularly in earlier models. Here are some of the most common problems with the Jaguar F-Type, based on complaints from owners:

  • Brakes: Some owners have reported issues with the brakes, including premature wear and brake fade, which can be a safety concern. This issue seems to be more prevalent in high-performance models with larger brakes .
  • Electrical system problems: Complaints about electrical issues are common, with some owners reporting problems with the infotainment system, electrical components failing, and issues with the battery and charging system .
  • Bodywork and poor fitment: Some owners have reported issues with the bodywork and poor fitment, including gaps between panels, misaligned body panels, and paint quality issues .
  • Exhaust: The active exhaust system, which is designed to provide a sporty sound, has been reported to have issues, including rattling and other noises .
  • Rust: While not a common issue, some owners have reported rust on their F-Types, particularly in areas where salt is used on the roads .
  • Drivetrain: Some owners have reported issues with the drivetrain, including problems with the transmission and differential .
  • Dealer relations: Some owners have reported issues with Jaguar dealers, including poor customer service and difficulty getting problems resolved .
  • Recalls: The Jaguar F-Type has had several recalls, including a recall for accessory belt pulley issues that can cause loss of steering and potential for a crash, and a recall for signal light issues that can cause the lights to blink at the wrong speed, indicating a burnt-out light .
  • Interior space: Some owners have reported that the interior of the F-Type is too cramped, particularly in the back seats, which are not suitable for adults.

In summary, while the Jaguar F-Type is a stylish and high-performance sports car, it has had its share of issues, particularly in earlier models. These issues include engine problems, brakes, electrical system problems, bodywork and poor fitment, exhaust issues, rust, drivetrain problems, dealer relations, recalls, and interior space.

Do Jaguar F types have problems?

A well-known problem with the supercharged V8 and V6 models is the timing chain jumping. This is caused by a design flaw in the tensioners and guides.

What is the Jaguar F-Type update for 2018?

Jaguar refreshes the 2018 F-Type lineup and adds a high-performance V6 model. Jaguar is giving the F-Type line a refresh for 2018 and adding two new variants. All new F-Types feature LED headlights and slightly darker taillights. Every model except the SVR also gets updated front bumpers.

What is the best engine for Jaguar F-Type?

The best engine is the more powerful of the two V6s. It's nearly as quick as the more powerful V8 engine but because it's lighter gives the car more agile handling. The V8 is available in two power outputs and both are boisterous.

How many miles can a Jaguar F-Type last?

Most Jaguar vehicles will last for at least 150,000 miles, but there's a lot that a driver can do to push this number much higher. With regular oil replacement, belt changes, spark plug replacement, and other basic maintenance services, you can ensure that your Jaguar lasts for 200,000 miles or more.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-09
  • VIN: SAJDD1GX1JC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car sometimes has a hard time to start engine. I have to pump the gas pedal numerous times quickly to finally get the car to start. Other times the car starts normally . Also sometimes when the engine is on and in the park position ; the engine may turn off. The auto off button has been eliminated from the problem because I turn that off; so this issue should not be associated with that component . Perhaps it’s a failing fuel pump or perhaps the valves get stuck flooding the carb making it too lean. I still have not figured out the issue but I am concerned driving the car since sometimes I won’t start .

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-30

Negative 2018 Jaguar F-type car reviews

  1. Weston Hilpert 2024-05-26

The brand new Jaguar has unfortunately experienced some issues, including a self-scratching paint problem that has required multiple visits to the paint shop. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a Jaguar and look forward to resolving these issues in a timely and satisfactory manner.

Positive 2018 Jaguar F-type car reviews

  1. Donnell Senger 2025-01-08

I've only had the car for a month, so my review will be limited to initial impressions. Firstly, the car is absolutely stunning. I've owned some very nice sports cars in the past, but I've never had one that people stop and take pictures of when it's parked. The sound of the car is also incredible, especially in dynamic mode with the exhaust in loud. While I've always thought Porsche flat-6s sounded the best, the Jag is darn close. In terms of handling, I'm still getting used to the car and haven't really played around with it with the stability control off. However, it has minimal body roll and very linear (if touchy in dynamic mode) throttle response. It throttle steers well in corners and the power is more than adequate. The book says 0-60 in a smidge under 5 seconds, and that feels about right. While a new base Boxster will about match it for less, who wants to listen to a Subaru soundtrack? The turn-in isn't as quick as my old Boxster, but it isn't bad. It's as good or better than a Z4M Coupe. The braking is nothing short of incredible. I have the performance braking package, and while it's a bit touchy, stops are extremely short and consistent. Jaguar obviously uses a very soft 'track' pad, as even a short drive will coat the wheels with brake dust. This means shorter replacement intervals, but it's worth it for the incredible stopping power. The ride is actually not too bad. My car has the 20' Carbon Fiber wheels (they are really aluminum with some attached CF accent pieces), but it still rides tolerably. I commute 110 miles to a client site twice a month, and the trip is easy and comfortable. Bear in mind that I've owned sports cars my entire life, so my opinion of 'comfortable' and yours might differ. The only downside is the visibility. The door sills are high, so it's difficult to see curbs when turning and parking (I leave plenty of room), and resting your arm on the door sill leaves it at an odd angle. The nose is long, and I would highly recommend the package with the parking assist.I absolutely love the front sensors for pulling forward, they are a lifesaver! The overall visibility is actually better than a new corvette in my opinion, so I don't really need the backup camera as much. The storage space up front is just what I need, with a glove compartment, arm rest compartment, and open cubby. However, the rear compartment is rather small and can only fit a few soft suitcases. The technology in this car is amazing, with an awesome sound system, loads of customization for car systems, very good blue tooth integration, and even adjustable side bolsters in the seats! The only downside is that the navigation system is not very intuitive, so make sure to read the manual before programming in a destination. In terms of reliability, I haven't had any problems to date, except for an annoying buzz/rattle in the right rear which might just be the cover for the storage area. Overall, I highly recommend the F-Type. It's a stunning car that sounds incredible and is an absolute blast to drive. You won't be disappointed!

  2. Osvaldo Nolan 2024-11-28

12/20/22 I must admit that I was a bit hesitant after years of hearing negative things about Jaguars. However, I am happy to report that I am now 100% satisfied with my Jaguar. In contrast, my friends and I have had quite a few issues with our Mercedes-Benz sports cars. It almost seemed like they were assembled in China.

  3. Chesley Borer 2024-11-19

Great job handling the snow! I would definitely recommend AWD.

  4. Milford Zieme 2024-10-22

I've driven 3000 miles so far and everything is going well. Here are some things to keep in mind: 1. I'm a big guy at 6'2/250 with 20% body fat, but I fit in the car just fine. If you're older or have mobility issues, getting in and out might be a bit of a challenge. If you're much bigger than me, I recommend taking a test drive and at least one test 'sit.' 2. Even though I have the base model, it's still a lot of car. It's easy to get into trouble with this car, so make sure to drive it actively and attentively, not passively. 3. Visibility isn't great, but proper mirror setup and seat position are key. 4. Ground clearance is generally fine, but it's definitely altered with a passenger. Keep this in mind depending on where and how you drive. 5. As an introvert, I've noticed that this car attracts a lot of attention. A lot. 6. Overall, I'm getting 30mpg, but I don't drive like an animal. 7. The trunk is pretty good. I know not everyone needs to haul 50 yards of mulch every day, but the trunk is perfectly adequate for grocery runs. 8. If you're new to Jaguar, be prepared for a less-than-ideal dealer experience. That's just how it is.

  5. Oran Botsford 2024-09-05

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It looks and sounds amazing, and it's great to hear that you've been receiving compliments. It's also wonderful to hear that you haven't experienced any issues in the 17 months since you've owned it.
