Common 2020 Infiniti Qx50 problems

The 2020 Infiniti QX50 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One major issue is related to the electrical systems, particularly the controls on the central console.

Another issue reported by owners is related to the powertrain and transmission. The 2020 QX50 is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). While the engine is generally praised for its performance, the CVT has been criticized for causing inconsistent power delivery, especially in slow-rolling traffic. The accelerator can feel finicky and jumpy, making it difficult to maintain a smooth driving experience

. Additionally, real-world fuel efficiency numbers are lower than the EPA estimates, with many owners reporting an average of around 22 miles per gallon in mixed driving, as opposed to the promised 26 miles per gallon combined

The steering system has also been a source of complaints. The steering is described as feeling too light, especially around corners, and becoming overly responsive at higher speeds. This can make the vehicle feel flighty and unstable, detracting from the overall driving experience

Lastly, the 2020 Infiniti QX50 has been reported to have issues with the tires, cruise control, CVT transmission, variable compression ratio actuator, and CarPlay failure, all within the first 4 months of ownership. These issues, combined with the electrical and powertrain problems, can make the 2020 QX50 a frustrating and potentially unsafe vehicle for some owners.

Negative 2020 Infiniti Qx50 car reviews

  1. Quentin Mueller 2025-09-01

I recently purchased a 2019 QX50 with 4,800 miles on it, which was previously a loaner car. Although I was initially impressed with the interior design and overall feel of the car, I unfortunately experienced some issues shortly after delivery. On the second day of driving the car, it wouldn't start, despite having less than 5,000 miles on it. I had it towed to the Infiniti dealership, which was conveniently located only a mile away from my office. The service advisor informed me that the starter was fried and would be replaced within a day, which was not a big deal. However, the next day I received a call stating that the starter replacement did not fix the issue and that the car needed a new engine. The service advisor explained that this was not unusual for this engine due to the new variable compression technology. Upon further inspection, metal shavings were found in the engine oil pan, indicating that something had worn out. Fortunately, a replacement engine was ordered and would be covered under warranty. However, two days later, I received another call stating that Infiniti had cancelled the engine order and that the repair would no longer be covered under warranty. The reason given was that the previous owner of the vehicle had experienced a starting issue within the last 6 months and the car had spent 2 months at a different dealership in a different state. According to the technician's report, water was found in several electrical connectors, leading them to conclude that the engine was likely submerged. While this explanation seems fishy to me, I understand that water in an electrical connector can come from many different sources and does not necessarily mean that there is water inside the engine. Regardless, I am disappointed that the repair will not be covered under warranty. If you have a broken finger, it does not necessarily mean you have bone cancer. I am sorry to hear about your experience with the service manager at your local Infiniti dealership. It sounds like you have been through a lot. The manager stated that there is no evidence of water in the engine and that the engine failure is internal. She requested for Infiniti to send out a field technical specialist to inspect the engine and determine the cause of failure, but unfortunately, Infiniti declined to do so. The dealership also denied your request to tear the engine down, which would have allowed you to prove that the failure was caused by water. I can understand your frustration with this situation. It is unfortunate that there is no warranty coverage and that you are on your own to get the engine replaced. The cost to replace the engine with a new one is approximately $20,000.00, while a used engine is about half that. You have had the engine removed and torn down, and it was found that the failure was caused by tolerances that were too tight between the connecting rod bearings and connecting rod journals. This is a defect from the factory, and given the facts, it is not surprising that the engine failed at less than 5,000 miles. Unfortunately, the internal engine parts to repair this failure are not available, and they may never be available as Infiniti has no intention of selling the internal engine parts. Only a complete engine assembly is available. I understand that this is a difficult situation for you, and I hope that you are able to find a solution that works for you. They're in the customer service business, and with this kind of customer service, they won't have any customers.

  2. Imani Auer 2025-07-26

I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you have faced with your Infiniti QX50. It must be frustrating to have paid so much for a car you don't have due to the unavailability of parts. It is also concerning that you have been without your car for over 6 months and have not received a solution from Infiniti Consumer Affairs. I understand that you have been trying to resolve this issue with various departments and managers, but have not received a response. As a fellow working parent, I can empathize with the challenges of getting to work and taking care of your family without a car. I hope that Infiniti can find a solution for you soon and provide the assistance you need. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.I had a really bad experience with Infiniti. I overpaid and they sent me a refund check that was returned to them because they didn’t have my correct address. Unfortunately, they still posted it against my account as though I had cashed it, which put my account into delinquency for a check I never received. This is my 4th Infiniti and I was disappointed with how they treated me. When we were driving the car off the lot, my husband found a razor blade on the roof. They ended up replacing the panels, but it was concerning that someone was aware of the cracked panels. I was sent to collections twice, once because my bill was 18 days overdue and the second time for the check I never received that they posted against my account. I called them because I never received a bill, but it didn't help. This has been a nightmare of an experience from beginning to now, still without a car. I hope they can be held accountable for their actions. I would not recommend buying an Infiniti.

  3. Isac Hintz 2025-07-10

I've been driving a brand new QX50 for the last month and a half in Houston, TX where we all know temperatures can get pretty high during the summer. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the AC not being able to handle the heat and humidity. I've taken the car to the Infiniti service department twice and they've assured me that the AC is working as designed. While I believe them, I just wanted to give you all a heads up!

  4. Kameron Mertz 2025-06-03

I have the essential. It's been randomly stopping in places on its own. Imagine driving down the highway and suddenly it hits the brakes for no reason. It's quite frustrating because nobody was there. Unfortunately, my coffee ended up spilling everywhere due to this issue. This has happened 4 times already. I have decided to switch back to BMW from Infiniti.

  5. Charlie Lowe 2025-05-13

I own a 2019 QX50 Essential and have experienced a temperature control issue. Despite setting the temperature to 62°F, the interior of the car is consistently 10 degrees hotter, with air coming out of the passenger vents measuring as high as 90°F. Even when lowering the temperature to 61°F, the air coming out remains uncomfortably warm, measuring at 55°F. Despite visiting the dealer, Harte Infiniti in Hartford, CT, twice for this issue, they claim that the car is operating to Infiniti standards. While the cooling temperature control was fine during the summer, the issue has reoccurred as the outside temperature has dropped below 60°F. As a confident statement, I believe that this issue needs to be addressed and resolved by the dealer.

Positive 2020 Infiniti Qx50 car reviews

  1. Moises Ullrich 2025-09-05

Despite my car only having 7800 miles and previously being a great car, it unfortunately experienced a manufacturer's defect resulting in a required replacement of the turbo assembly for the engine. While this is disappointing news, I am confident in the luxury car's ability to fix the issue and provide a satisfactory solution. Although the part alone costs about $1500, I trust that the dealer will handle the repair with the utmost care and professionalism. As a consumer, I expect the best from my luxury car and I am confident that this issue will be resolved in a timely and efficient manner. Despite the initial setback, I am optimistic about the future of my car and look forward to continuing to enjoy it for years to come.

  2. Emery Brakus 2025-05-22

I really love this car! It's brand new inside and out, and the ride is incredibly smooth and quiet. I don't understand the complaints about the CVT - it seems perfectly fine to me, and I'm just an average driver who needs to get from point A to point B. I traded in my 2017 QX50 for this one, and it was definitely the right choice. The 2017 model was terrible for me - it had too much power and drank up premium fuel like it was going out of style. The 2019 model isn't great on gas either, but it's definitely an improvement, and there are so many other great improvements that make up for it. I tested out other makes and models, but I kept coming back to this one. If you're considering it, I highly recommend going for the Essential and adding on whatever extras you want. Overall, I think INFINITI did a fantastic job with this car - finally!

  3. Kelvin Hermann 2025-05-16

The issue of fuel fumes entering the car and the air conditioner failing in high humidity has been resolved by replacing the lift gate motor twice with confidence in its effectiveness.

  4. Reymundo Reichert 2025-05-06

This car is amazing! If you're looking for a spacious SUV with great performance and fuel efficiency, the QX50 is the way to go. It's even quieter than the 2019 Lexus RX50 and Acura RDX. The 16-speaker Bose system turns your car into a concert hall on wheels. It's incredibly roomy, allowing me to easily transport sports equipment and fit four people comfortably. I highly recommend this car! Although the transmission can be a bit jumpy if you punch the gas, it's still a great buy. As of 11/03/20, I still love the car. My MPG's are better than what others have reported. I've taken many trips with my family and all of our lacrosse equipment and overnight bags fit perfectly in the back. The seats are incredibly comfortable and I haven't had any maintenance issues despite having driven 50k miles. While there is a bit of a jerky transmission and turbo lag at times, it's nothing that can't be managed with smooth acceleration. Overall, I absolutely love this car! As of 5/9/2021, I still love the car. The MPG's are better than what some people complain about, although I do think the car was over-promised and under-delivered in that regard. It's a quiet ride and I've only had to do maintenance on the oil, tires, and brake fluid. My only complaint is the transmission surges when changing gears on the lower end and there is a turbo lag, but that's typical with turbos. Interestingly, my best friend has a 2019 Acura RDX and it has the same issue.

  5. Lester Wolf 2025-03-14

I was pleasantly surprised by this car, as I initially thought it would be too small for my 6'7
