Common Infiniti Qx50 problems

The Infiniti QX50, a luxury crossover SUV, has faced several issues reported by its owners. These problems span across various systems, including the engine, brakes, electrical system, and fuel system.

One of the most common issues reported is excessive oil consumption in the 2019 QX50 model. This defect can lead to lower gas mileage than advertised, with some drivers experiencing 17-20 MPG instead of the expected 24-31 MPG. Additionally, some drivers have reported strong odors in their vehicles without any visible leaks or issues.

The 2019 QX50 also has problems with its emergency braking system, which can activate suddenly despite there being no objects near the vehicle. This issue is related to Nissan's Forward Emergency Braking system (FEB) and its sensors, which appear to malfunction and falsely detect obstacles that are not present.

Electrical system defects are also common in the 2019 Infiniti QX50. Drivers have reported issues with dashboard screens and rear-view camera displays going blank, as well as components of the electrical system continuing to function even when the vehicle is turned off. Some customers have also reported problems with the key fob, doors, and navigation system in their vehicles.

Infiniti QX50 drivers have also reported issues with warning lights and airbags. Several drivers have reported seeing warning lights such as an Infiniti BCI malfunction, Check Engine, or Check Airbag light. Some drivers have even reported that the airbags failed to deploy during collisions, which can be dangerous for the driver and any passengers.

The 2021 QX50 model has also faced issues, with some drivers reporting problems with the brakes, steering, and engine. Some drivers have had to replace the alternator and sonar panel, and others have experienced gutless acceleration at takeoff. Additionally, some drivers have reported mismatched interior trim and poor customer service from Infiniti.

Overall, the Infiniti QX50 has faced several issues reported by its owners, particularly in the 2019 and 2021 model years. These issues span across various systems, including the engine, brakes, electrical system, and fuel system, and can lead to safety concerns and costly repairs.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 3PCAJ5BB4MF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Without any warning or indicator light on the dash, the vehicle lost power when pulling out of our driveway - we live on a main road and were very lucky not to be hit by upcoming traffic. The car went into limp mode and would not accelerate past 20mph. We have been fighting with Infiniti for the last three weeks as no one can find the problem and they finally said a new engine was needed. There is on 35,000 miles on this car and we had to fight to have this replacement covered under warranty. Now that parts are back ordered and we are not receiving any help. We are three weeks without a vehicle and have no loaner vehicle. No one at Infiniti can give a timeframe for the resolution of this issue, what caused this issue and we are now very fearful that this will happen again - even with an engine replacement. This was very scary for our family and we are amazed that there was no indicator light or warning. The car didn't make any noises and was running great and then all of a sudden it would not go. Very alarming to say the least!

  • Summary: I was driving and came to a red light behind other cars. I was completely stopped with brakes applied and vehicle suddenly lurched forward, RPM’s reved up over 3,000 without me accelerating. I was about two blocks from home and was able to make it by slowly driving and jerking all the way. Mechanic codes were 720 output speed sensor. Very alarming situation! I could have easily hit the car in front of me if I would have been any closer, or worst yet a pedestrian! Appears to be critical safety issue and something that may need to be recalled.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-13
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JN1BJ0RPXGM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: so after my initial report about my engine catching fire on the highway, I received an invoice for $5,000 for a used engine with 80k miles on it; plus another $2800 for the service fee. I already put down about $3900 for the engine repair. The mechanic sent me pictures of the engine with the holes on it that caused the damage (or the holes might have happened during the fire). I’m attaching photos sent to me, from my mechanic, showing the holes/damage on the engine, for your consideration and a photo of the initial repair bill (including receipt of my deposit) for your review … also, I still need to pay another $4300 to pick it up, but he said my check engine light is still on due to a transmission, that may be related to the valve body failing. What are these qx50s still being sold?? On the car forums and YouTube, there are so many issues with the engines and the transmissions (including the 450k that are currently under investigation). And their consumer affairs dept is extremely hostile about the situation, when you call into the infiniti office/headquarters. These defective engines/ transmissions need to be recalled, as soon as possible. They’re extremely dangerous and Infiniti is not taking responsibility for the problem. Why is the govt not intervening on behalf of the infiniti owners??

  • Date Complaint: 2024-05-13
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JN1BJ0RPXGM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: There are 2 check engine codes that came up as an issue for my vehicle, out of the blue: P0720 and P0500. I reached out to my mechanic and he couldn't fix it. So my plan was to take it to the dealership at the end of this month; however, while driving the vehicle back from my sister's house, the bottom of the car caught on fire and I had to pull over to jump out the car with my children. Called 911. The police and fire dept came, but the fire had gone out by that time, so the officer had the vehicle towed off the highway. Looked into the issue online and apparently it's very common. One Infiniti dealership said that he fixes about 30 per month. Why didn't Infiniti issue a recall for this very serious, hazardous situation? Where is their due diligence to fix this problem for their customers? Why are they letting so many vehicles fail? What happened to reasonable due care? Is it not enough that they are aware of this issue and won’t recall it, but what about the physical danger that they are putting us in? And the emotional distress they caused my children, having to jump out of their vehicle on a highway in the middle of the night? Doesn’t Infiniti have a minimum safety requirement of due care to mitigate hazards for its customers?

  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-27
  • VIN: 3PCAJ5M15KF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: About five months ago, while driving on the highway, the care would say it's in Drive, but sounded like it couldn't get out of 1st gear and I'd get high RPMs. Thankfully there was stop-and-go traffic and I didn't have to exit pull off the highway or hit high speeds. I exited at the next exit and, as soon as the car stopped, it wasn't possible to get it into gear. Eventually the car started and I was able to get into gear and drive it using Manual drive mode. Once at the dealership we were told it was a bad VCR and they needed to replace that to get it going. That was around 38,000 miles. This most recent incident, I had just gotten onto the highway when I started to hear a low whiney noise when pressing the accelerator. I only had a few miles till my exit and decided to continue, thinking it might just be debris or something. After exiting, I literally rolled into the gas station because the car, despite being in Drive, was not in gear. The car stalled and I couldn't get it started, or I could get it started, but it refused to go to Neutral to allow me to push it out of the way. Eventually, the car started and I was able to put it into Drive. Thinking it was the same issue, I planned to drive it the 2 miles home. I made it to the first traffic light and the car turned off, leaving the me stranded in the middle lane of the road. I called the police and tow trucks to come help me get the car moved (no one knows how to put the car into an emergency Neutral position including the 2 officers, 4 tow truck drivers and an Infiniti mechanic that was driving by). Eventually the tow truck came and I was able to drop it off at the dealership, who have told me there is "a chunk of bearing material in pan with copper particulates." I'm currently around 40,000 miles.

  • Summary: Engine acceleartion issue. Rpm goes high but car struggle to speed up.. At first it happened when car was at stop light, struggle to move forward.. took to Grubbs infiniti.. At first, dealer could not replicate the issue, but luckily I had taken the video of the issue I had. Than the dealer was finally able to experience the issue themselves and replaced the transmission thinking that was the issue. I took the car after repair and within 3-4 days I had the same issue. This time I was driving in a freeway at 60 mph. When I hit the gas pedal to accelerate faster, the engine RPM went high but instead of speeding up, car felt like slowing down. So i exited the freeway to service road. Once the speed went down to 20mph, it didn't go any higher than that. This time there was a check engine light on I took it back to the dealership .They again could not replicate the issue and just did the ECM software update. I took the car home but after driving less than 20 miles, the car had the same issue. I again took it back to delearship. This time they are replacing something called VCR..Still waiting now

  1. Oran Schoen 2024-11-19

    Vehicle year: 2023

Hi there! I recently purchased a 2022 QX50, my second Infiniti, but unfortunately the clock has been malfunctioning since the beginning. I took it to the Infiniti of Tampa dealer for a scheduled appointment and waited for four hours in a freezing waiting area. They informed me that it's a known issue, but they don't have a fix for it yet. I reached out to corporate and spoke with Loren, a regional customer services manager, who unfortunately couldn't provide me with a timeline for the software fix. Today, I decided to write to Roland Krueger, Chairman and Global President of Infiniti, at 183 Queens Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong 999077, to ask him to prioritize this update. As a customer, I believe it's his responsibility to ensure that these issues are resolved. If you're experiencing similar issues, I encourage you to reach out to him as well. Thank you for listening!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience test driving the QX50 Sensory today. As my Volvo XC90 lease is coming to an end, I thought it would be a good idea to explore my options. I must say, the QX50 Sensory drives really well and the styling is great. However, I was disappointed to find out that a luxury brand like this still doesn't offer wireless phone charging in a car with an MSRP of 54k in 2020.

  3. Leonard Parisian 2024-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2020

I purchased a brand new QX50 in September 2018 and unfortunately, I have encountered a few issues. Firstly, the map in the Navigation system is at least 3 years old and I was informed by Infiniti customer care that I would have to order an update myself. Secondly, I have noticed that the forward emergency system does not work as it is advertised on YouTube or their website. I would recommend paying attention to this during a test drive. Lastly, the sunroof has been making a rattling noise and it took multiple visits to the dealer to fix it. I was informed that the part was difficult to obtain. Overall, I have had some challenges with my QX50 but I am hopeful that they will be resolved soon.

This car wasn't on my radar, but when I came across it, the size and color drew me in. I test drove it and immediately fell in love. It was smooth, silent, and comfortable. However, within the first week, my navigation and radio screens went black a few times. Unfortunately, there was worse to come. My driver's seat got stuck in the furthest position, and it took three months to get a part and fix it. Meanwhile, I was still making payments and didn't have a car to drive. There was no courtesy vehicle, which made things even more difficult. A week after getting the car back, I started hearing rattling noises from the front of the car, a humming, and I noticed that the car was hesitating when accelerating. There were vibrations while driving, which were noticeable but not too shaky, and power loss during driving. I took the car to the shop and was told that the humming was from when they rotated my tires. The tires were re-rotated to where they were when I brought the car in. The second dealership said it could have been from when the car sat for three months, and the tires were flattened from not being moved. The first dealership didn't hear the rattling but suggested I only use premium gas or higher from Shell, Exxon, or Sunoco (no mom or pop stations). The acceleration and other issues were not even addressed. The second dealer heard the noise, changed out a part (VCR - no idea what that is), which helped with acceleration (at least that's what I thought). However, I still feel the vibrations and power loss while driving, and the rattling noise persists.During the test drive, my husband and I pointed out a noise that we had previously mentioned to another dealer. However, we were told that this is how the car sounds. We also noticed vibrations and a loss of power while driving, but the mechanic did not seem to notice any issues. Unfortunately, we were not satisfied with the final verdict, which was to put more mileage on the car and use premium or high-end gas. Overall, we are disappointed with the three visits we have made for the same issue and hope to find a solution soon.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my SUV QX50 2021. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop 7 times this year to get the brakes fixed. Despite working with the consumer team, the issue still persists. I'm feeling quite frustrated and disappointed, and I'm hoping we can find a solution. I would really appreciate it if we could discuss the possibility of a buyback, as there seems to be a persistent issue with my QX50 SUV. Thank you for your time and attention.

When I leased the QX50, I wasn't aware that it came with run flat tires. I later found out that these tires can only run for 50 miles and there's a good chance of distorting the rim. Unfortunately, the car doesn't come with a spare or a jack. If you need to repair a tire, it may take some time to find a replacement since they are not commonly sold. It's important to note that a new tire can cost around $300 each. If I had known this beforehand, I would have considered my options more carefully.
