Common Infiniti Qx50 problems

The Infiniti QX50, a luxury crossover SUV, has faced several issues reported by its owners. These problems span across various systems, including the engine, brakes, electrical system, and fuel system.

One of the most common issues reported is excessive oil consumption in the 2019 QX50 model. This defect can lead to lower gas mileage than advertised, with some drivers experiencing 17-20 MPG instead of the expected 24-31 MPG. Additionally, some drivers have reported strong odors in their vehicles without any visible leaks or issues.

The 2019 QX50 also has problems with its emergency braking system, which can activate suddenly despite there being no objects near the vehicle. This issue is related to Nissan's Forward Emergency Braking system (FEB) and its sensors, which appear to malfunction and falsely detect obstacles that are not present.

Electrical system defects are also common in the 2019 Infiniti QX50. Drivers have reported issues with dashboard screens and rear-view camera displays going blank, as well as components of the electrical system continuing to function even when the vehicle is turned off. Some customers have also reported problems with the key fob, doors, and navigation system in their vehicles.

Infiniti QX50 drivers have also reported issues with warning lights and airbags. Several drivers have reported seeing warning lights such as an Infiniti BCI malfunction, Check Engine, or Check Airbag light. Some drivers have even reported that the airbags failed to deploy during collisions, which can be dangerous for the driver and any passengers.

The 2021 QX50 model has also faced issues, with some drivers reporting problems with the brakes, steering, and engine. Some drivers have had to replace the alternator and sonar panel, and others have experienced gutless acceleration at takeoff. Additionally, some drivers have reported mismatched interior trim and poor customer service from Infiniti.

Overall, the Infiniti QX50 has faced several issues reported by its owners, particularly in the 2019 and 2021 model years. These issues span across various systems, including the engine, brakes, electrical system, and fuel system, and can lead to safety concerns and costly repairs.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 3PCAJ5BB4MF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Without any warning or indicator light on the dash, the vehicle lost power when pulling out of our driveway - we live on a main road and were very lucky not to be hit by upcoming traffic. The car went into limp mode and would not accelerate past 20mph. We have been fighting with Infiniti for the last three weeks as no one can find the problem and they finally said a new engine was needed. There is on 35,000 miles on this car and we had to fight to have this replacement covered under warranty. Now that parts are back ordered and we are not receiving any help. We are three weeks without a vehicle and have no loaner vehicle. No one at Infiniti can give a timeframe for the resolution of this issue, what caused this issue and we are now very fearful that this will happen again - even with an engine replacement. This was very scary for our family and we are amazed that there was no indicator light or warning. The car didn't make any noises and was running great and then all of a sudden it would not go. Very alarming to say the least!

  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-04
  • VIN: JN1BJ0RR2GM

  • Summary: I was driving and came to a red light behind other cars. I was completely stopped with brakes applied and vehicle suddenly lurched forward, RPM’s reved up over 3,000 without me accelerating. I was about two blocks from home and was able to make it by slowly driving and jerking all the way. Mechanic codes were 720 output speed sensor. Very alarming situation! I could have easily hit the car in front of me if I would have been any closer, or worst yet a pedestrian! Appears to be critical safety issue and something that may need to be recalled.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-13
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JN1BJ0RPXGM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: so after my initial report about my engine catching fire on the highway, I received an invoice for $5,000 for a used engine with 80k miles on it; plus another $2800 for the service fee. I already put down about $3900 for the engine repair. The mechanic sent me pictures of the engine with the holes on it that caused the damage (or the holes might have happened during the fire). I’m attaching photos sent to me, from my mechanic, showing the holes/damage on the engine, for your consideration and a photo of the initial repair bill (including receipt of my deposit) for your review … also, I still need to pay another $4300 to pick it up, but he said my check engine light is still on due to a transmission, that may be related to the valve body failing. What are these qx50s still being sold?? On the car forums and YouTube, there are so many issues with the engines and the transmissions (including the 450k that are currently under investigation). And their consumer affairs dept is extremely hostile about the situation, when you call into the infiniti office/headquarters. These defective engines/ transmissions need to be recalled, as soon as possible. They’re extremely dangerous and Infiniti is not taking responsibility for the problem. Why is the govt not intervening on behalf of the infiniti owners??

The independent mechanic related the failure with the NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V244000 (Air Bags) however, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The local dealer diagnosed the vehicle and confirmed a failure with the sensor module for the air bags. The contact approved the repair; however, the vehicle was not yet repaired. • Date Complaint: 2024-05-13
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JN1BJ0RPXGM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: There are 2 check engine codes that came up as an issue for my vehicle, out of the blue: P0720 and P0500. I reached out to my mechanic and he couldn't fix it. So my plan was to take it to the dealership at the end of this month; however, while driving the vehicle back from my sister's house, the bottom of the car caught on fire and I had to pull over to jump out the car with my children. Called 911. The police and fire dept came, but the fire had gone out by that time, so the officer had the vehicle towed off the highway. Looked into the issue online and apparently it's very common. One Infiniti dealership said that he fixes about 30 per month. Why didn't Infiniti issue a recall for this very serious, hazardous situation? Where is their due diligence to fix this problem for their customers? Why are they letting so many vehicles fail? What happened to reasonable due care? Is it not enough that they are aware of this issue and won’t recall it, but what about the physical danger that they are putting us in? And the emotional distress they caused my children, having to jump out of their vehicle on a highway in the middle of the night? Doesn’t Infiniti have a minimum safety requirement of due care to mitigate hazards for its customers?

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-03-27
  • VIN: 3PCAJ5M15KF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: About five months ago, while driving on the highway, the care would say it's in Drive, but sounded like it couldn't get out of 1st gear and I'd get high RPMs. Thankfully there was stop-and-go traffic and I didn't have to exit pull off the highway or hit high speeds. I exited at the next exit and, as soon as the car stopped, it wasn't possible to get it into gear. Eventually the car started and I was able to get into gear and drive it using Manual drive mode. Once at the dealership we were told it was a bad VCR and they needed to replace that to get it going. That was around 38,000 miles. This most recent incident, I had just gotten onto the highway when I started to hear a low whiney noise when pressing the accelerator. I only had a few miles till my exit and decided to continue, thinking it might just be debris or something. After exiting, I literally rolled into the gas station because the car, despite being in Drive, was not in gear. The car stalled and I couldn't get it started, or I could get it started, but it refused to go to Neutral to allow me to push it out of the way. Eventually, the car started and I was able to put it into Drive. Thinking it was the same issue, I planned to drive it the 2 miles home. I made it to the first traffic light and the car turned off, leaving the me stranded in the middle lane of the road. I called the police and tow trucks to come help me get the car moved (no one knows how to put the car into an emergency Neutral position including the 2 officers, 4 tow truck drivers and an Infiniti mechanic that was driving by). Eventually the tow truck came and I was able to drop it off at the dealership, who have told me there is "a chunk of bearing material in pan with copper particulates." I'm currently around 40,000 miles.

  • VIN: 3PCAJ5M14KF
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine acceleartion issue. Rpm goes high but car struggle to speed up.. At first it happened when car was at stop light, struggle to move forward.. took to Grubbs infiniti.. At first, dealer could not replicate the issue, but luckily I had taken the video of the issue I had. Than the dealer was finally able to experience the issue themselves and replaced the transmission thinking that was the issue. I took the car after repair and within 3-4 days I had the same issue. This time I was driving in a freeway at 60 mph. When I hit the gas pedal to accelerate faster, the engine RPM went high but instead of speeding up, car felt like slowing down. So i exited the freeway to service road. Once the speed went down to 20mph, it didn't go any higher than that. This time there was a check engine light on I took it back to the dealership .They again could not replicate the issue and just did the ECM software update. I took the car home but after driving less than 20 miles, the car had the same issue. I again took it back to delearship. This time they are replacing something called VCR..Still waiting now

Latest negative Infiniti Qx50 car reviews

  1. Carey Heathcote 2025-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2020

This car has been in the shop for 70 out of the 75 days it has been with us. Despite Infiniti's knowledge of the numerous problems, they have refused to buy it back. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise against purchasing this model. Currently, the car is at the dealer awaiting a fix for a fuel smell in the cabin, which they have identified as a known venting problem. The issue is being addressed by engineering.

  2. Sim Deckow 2025-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2020

I've only had my QX 50 for four weeks and I'm a bit worried. Occasionally, when I come to a stop and then pull out into traffic, the RPM goes all the way up to the red and the car won't shift to the next gear. It's a bit scary because I have to pull over to avoid getting hit. I'm grateful that I haven't tried to get on the freeway yet. The car also seems to lose power and want to stall out. I took it in to get checked and was told that there was a bug on the camera that was trying to prevent an accident or that it felt like there was something in front of me. They suggested that I keep the camera clean with wet wipes to improve the car's acceleration. I was also told that the computer was trying to catch up with what I was trying to do. I took it in on Thursday and Friday, and the salesman took it for a test drive but didn't feel any different. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again today when I pulled out into traffic. At this point, I don't feel safe driving this car. It's such a shame because it's a beautiful car and I enjoy driving it, but this problem really needs to be checked out.

  3. Kacey Fadel 2025-11-01

Sometimes the AC may not work due to a software glitch, but it can be easily fixed by resetting the computer at the dealership. It's important to note that using USB cables for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto may cause electronic problems when charging your phone. If you experience any issues, it's best to avoid using them. The check engine light may come on randomly, but it's nothing to worry about. The service centers can be busy, but they will provide loaner cars if necessary.

There is a strong gas smell when parked in the garage. Based on numerous online posts reporting the same issue with the 2019 model, it is clear that this is an ongoing problem. The dealer's claim of being unaware of the issue is not acceptable. It is important that this issue is addressed and resolved immediately.

I've been driving a brand new QX50 for the last month and a half in Houston, TX where we all know temperatures can get pretty high during the summer. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the AC not being able to handle the heat and humidity. I've taken the car to the Infiniti service department twice and they've assured me that the AC is working as designed. While I believe them, I just wanted to give you all a heads up!

Hey there! I was looking for a new SUV since my current lease was almost up, and I decided to go for the QX50. However, I was a bit hesitant after reading some poor reviews of the 2019 model on Edmunds. So, I decided to test drive the 2020 model to see if any of the issues had been resolved. I must say, I was really impressed with the ride and size, but what really caught my attention was the power of the new engine. Even though my current car is a three litre 300 twin turbo, I couldn't notice any significant difference in power. The CVT transmission worked perfectly fine for me, both at low and high speeds. Although I did have a slight issue with the light steering feel, I was able to easily adjust it to my liking by changing the setting from standard to sport in the settings option screen. As someone who lives in the city, I don't expect great gas mileage from any vehicle, and this one is no different. However, on the highway, I'm getting almost 30 MPG and the ride is great. The power is very acceptable at any speed, and I found no power lag going up hills, which many complained about with the CVT transmission. Overall, I'm very happy and surprised with this SUV. It has many nice features for the money. Thanks for reading!

This is a wonderful car! I purchased it as the first owner after the dealership used it as a loaner. It had 16K on it and was in wonderful condition, and it still is. While the resale value has been falling with each monthly payment, the price was fair. I previously owned a G37 before the QX50 and it held its value, but not so much with this one. Despite that, I still love it though!

It’s great to hear that you find the ride comforting! However, it's worth noting that there is no wireless connection to Apple Car Play. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Love everything about the car! The new engine is so much fun to drive and gets amazing gas mileage. However, I have noticed that during the brutal Texas summers, the A/C struggles to keep up. It tends to get warm when accelerating and fades in and out. I have been to the dealer and they say it's working as designed, of course. But overall, still loving my car!

I was recently in the market for a small luxury SUV, so my partner and I decided to test drive all the German and Japanese competition. We started with the X3, which was a great car, but the seats were a little tight for me, and the price/lease was not very competitive. Next up was the MB GLC300, but it was the same as it was three years ago, so we decided to pass. The Audi Q5 was a good all-around car, but it didn't really wow us in any way. Finally, we tried the QX50, which we found to be the best overall option when you consider its size, safety features, technology, gas performance, and lease payment. We did find it odd that the QX50 was $100 cheaper in a lease than its German rivals, which were priced $10k less.
