Hyundai Sonata 2013 problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common Hyundai Sonata 2013 problems
The 2013 Hyundai Sonata is known for several common problems, primarily related to its engine, lighting system, and seatbelt linkage.
One of the most significant issues is engine failure, which has affected 2011, 2012, and 2013 models. Many drivers have reported that their engines froze up after hearing banging noises while driving, leading to a loss of power, brakes, and steering. This problem resulted in a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai in 2016, which led to an $8.5 million settlement covering engine repair and replacement, towing expenses, and rental fees for owners of affected 2011-2014 Sonatas with 2.0- or 2.4-liter Theta II engines.
Another common problem with the 2013 Hyundai Sonata is related to its lighting system. Many owners of this model year have reported burnt-out brake lights, which can be a safety hazard.
Additionally, Hyundai recalled certain Sonata models in 2017 due to a seatbelt linkage that was not properly connected to the pretensioner. This issue could prevent the passenger from being properly restrained during a collision, increasing the risk of injury. Hyundai installed external wire filter kits to address this issue in 2011-2013 Sonatas. In 2018, the same model years, excluding the 2014 redesign, were recalled once again due to disabled frontal airbags, side airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners. The automaker installed a warning label on the affected vehicles to prevent future detachment.
In 2012 Hyundai Sonatas, many owners experienced problems shifting gears due to a faulty speed sensor. This issue caused the vehicle to grind, shudder, and produce clunking noises when shifting from park to drive. Some owners even reported having no gear selection display on the dashboard or gear shift. Fortunately, a high-quality replacement speed sensor is not too expensive, typically costing around $30 to over $50, depending on the type and configuration.
Another issue found in Hyundai Sonatas is defective speakers. Some 2011-2016 redesigns required a hard reset to resolve a software bug that prevented the CD player, navigation, radio, and phone calls from producing audio.
Lastly, some 2003-2015 Hyundai Sonata models had a problem with the parking lights remaining illuminated after the engine was turned off, leading to a drained battery. This issue was commonly attributed to a fuse issue but could also be caused by a worn grommet on the brake pedal.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- VIN: 5NPEC4AC0DH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Car was purchased on [XXX] for our daughter for a little over $6500.00 for a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited addition. On around July the 2nd the car started running weirdly and by [XXX] it had stopped running all together and the men from work had to help her push it onto her jobsite, which she wasn't far from. I had the car towed from her job to a mechanic who stated the engine was frozen. I immediately started googling the year make and model to see how much a used engine would cost. That's when a page came up stating there was a recall on that make and model. I was relieved because we do not have money and this was a necessity for our daughter who is [XXX] to get to work. I spoke with the dealership on approximately the 4th or 5th of July and scheduled an appt to had the car towed on July the 8th.. The car has been at the dealership until today 08/12/2023. The car is not running correctly. The didn't say anything other than the new engine has been placed and we can come pick the car up. This car is a hazard. Please help. EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: 5NPEB4AC9DH
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
- Summary: I bought this car brand new and I’m the only driver. I have my oil changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. Boiling Springs Tire is the place I get it changed but I have had it changed a few times at Hyundai in Spartanburg. About a year or so ago my oil light came on and I was shocked because it hadn’t been long since I had oil changed. I checked it and it was almost out. I put oil in it and thought maybe boiling springs tire did not put enough in it. Next time i took to Hyundai but kept eye on it. To make a long story short I am having to keep an eye on my oil and adding more about every 200 miles. I know it’s 10 years old but I’ve had cars older than this and did not have to add oil. Other cars older than mine are being recalled and I’m not understanding why 2013 are left out. Please advise as I’m sure I’m not the only 2013 owner having issues with our Hyundai Sonata . I park the car in my carport and there is never any oil on the floor so I’m not sure where the oil is going. I did ask them at the Hyundai place about that and I was informed there were no recalls on mine and it would cost me around $1000 just for them to pull the engine down to check. So I’m just having to keep checking on the oil.
STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: 5NPEC4AB9DH

Since the lights have been an issue, the electrical issue is also now inside the vehicle. The radio and other controls in the vehicle do not work any longer, as well as the lights in the radio, air conditioning, and other controls inside the vehicle. The steering wheel is also loose now and jiggles when driving the vehicle. There have been no warning lamps about these issues, and I had an auto shop confirm that there are electrical and steering issues. I did receive a letter about a recall for electrical for the year, type, and model of my car, however, the dealership said that my VIN number is not associated with the recall and will not fix the issues.

- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Dear NHTSA: I recently bought a HYUNDAI SONATA 2013 I got the NC vehicle inspection PASSED the same day. The car has been working perfectly. But, my granddaughter, XXXX, who I share the car with got a terrible experience last Thursday [XXX], she was driving to her job around 2:30 PM when suddenly the car just died, without any light showing on the screen. She was in panic in the middle of a big road with all the cars passing by. She used beach chairs so the others could know the car was dead. A police officer stopped and helped her move the car out of the road so a towing can pick up the car. This was not only a missed day at job for her, it could have ended in a terrible accident. Here are some pictures of the awful day. The car was towed to a mechanic who immediately said this is an engine manufacturer problem of your brand. I am the third owner of the car so no communication has been sent to me saying this car has an ENGINE RECALL that could fire at any moment. This is insane and I felt totally drowned by your brand. Again, no light was showing on the screen, nothing…. My car is at the Hyundai Keffer dealer at Charlotte and they said the recall for engine is closed and that will not cover the repair. I do not have money for a repair. Please help me. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: All 4 of my door lock actuators have failed since, 1 year in to owning the vehicle. There is a safety concern in not being able to get into or out of the vehicle due to the locks failing. As well as, making me a target for theft. Sometimes the locks will lock, other times they will not. I once put my dogs in the car and the locks would not open back up, it was terrifying. The component has not been checked yet, but I see there was a recall but my Vin was not included for some reason. This happens without warning.

- Summary: Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Hyundai Sonata passenger cars, manufactured from January 24, 2012, through June 21, 2012. The curtain side airbags on these vehicles may inflate without deployment command due to an error during manufacturing.
- Consequence: The curtain airbag may inflate without deployment command and increase the risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle. Additionally, an unexpected deployment would be a significant driver distraction and would limit the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai dealers will notify owners, and dealers will replace the curtain side airbags free of charge. This recall began on August 31, 2012. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

The gas mileage is slightly lower than expected, but given that most of the driving is in the city, it is still respectable at 22.5/mpg. At 60mph, the car gets an impressive 35mpg, providing a minimum range of 425-75 miles. The acceleration is responsive, and the eco-control feature helps to improve gas mileage. The brakes work well in emergency stops, even on wet surfaces. It is highly recommended to maintain a safe distance of at least one car length per 10mph in front of you, and even more in wet or icy conditions. The front seats are incredibly comfortable, although some may prefer more extended thigh support. The seat end is firm enough to provide additional support, and there is plenty of room to adjust. Both front seats have On/Off seat heaters, which is a blessing for people with lower back troubles. The driver's seat has 8-way power control with additional power lumbar controls. The steering wheel has both up/down and manual telescoping controls, providing ample choices for comfort and safety. There are no memory settings for anything other than the last used. Despite some consumer magazines' reviews about a difficult and insufficient small view with small C-pillar windows and large C pillars, the view is coupled with both outside mirrors and looking back over those sides, providing an almost 270-degree view of safety with only about 5-10 feet at the blindest spot. The controls are straightforward and intuitive. Although it doesn't have the larger screen with a backup camera, there is a seemingly endless supply of after-market cameras available, some of which work very well. They are available in both wireless and wired options. The car has a single climate control, but the blower is powerful enough with enough combinations of controls and vents to circulate very well and quickly. Overall, the front seats are incredibly comfortable and the car is user-friendly.I really appreciate the detailed review of the car's features! It's great to hear that the front seats have On/Off seat heaters, which can be a blessing for people with lower back troubles. The driver seat's 8-way power control with additional power lumbar controls sounds like a great feature too. Despite some consumer magazines reviews about a difficult and insufficient small view with small C-pillar windows and large C pillars, it's good to know that the view is still safe with both outside mirrors and looking back over those sides. The controls sound straightforward and intuitive, which is always a plus. It's a shame that your car doesn't have the larger screen with a backup camera, but it's great to know that there are after-market cameras available that work very well. The Sirius XM radio sounds like a great feature too, especially with the powerful sound system and 18 memory settings for satellite, and the same for conventional AM/FM. It's also good to know that the radio connects via either Bluetooth or a direct USB plug to your cell phone (both Android and iPhone), which allows the usage of the phone through the sound system. Thank you for sharing your experience with us! Overall, it sounds like a great car with a lot of great features.

I've put 24K miles on my limited turbo Sonata and I still love it just as much as the day I bought it. It's fast, comfortable, and gets great gas mileage, but what really sets it apart is how much fun it is to drive. I would absolutely buy this car again.

I love this car, but it seems like the wheels and tires that Hyundai chose were not designed for winter driving. When I bought the car in Green Bay in May 2013, I didn't realize how much of a problem this would be living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When I first started driving in the snow, I was shocked at how poor the tire traction was. It made me feel unsafe. However, after buying new all-season tires that were rated good on snow and ice for the fronts, I noticed a big difference. I still had trouble with the back original tires sliding out on turns, so I decided to replace them too. While the wheels are beautiful, they tend to suck up snow like a magnet on the inside, which throws off the wheel balance. I find myself constantly having to clean out the snow, but it's worth it to have a car that I love.

I've owned a GLS with the pop package for six months now and it's been a fantastic car in this segment. It performs perfectly every time and I've had no problems with the remote start that I installed. There have been no adjustments or glitches either. The only downside is that the tire noise on rough roads can get a bit noisy, but that's mainly due to the low resistance tires enhancing road noise. On smooth roads, it's like butter! The suspension is smooth and controlled, but not floaty. There are no rattles, squeaks, or other noises (except for loose objects in the top of the console which will rattle). However, I placed a liner in and the rattling stopped. There are many dress-up options on eBay, including chrome wheel skins for only $69.00 for a set of four. The car looks expensive, but it doesn't give buyers remorse. There's tons of room and the seats are comfortable. The average MPG is 23/35 with eco.

The 2013 Sonata has some great features, including its fuel efficiency, reliability, and drivability. On longer road trips, the car has measured at 35-40 mpg and averages around 28-30 mpg combined, according to the car's dash display. Despite having driven over 100k miles and owned the car for almost 6 years, I have not had to make any major repairs. The largest issue I have encountered was a burnt taillight assembly. While the acceleration on the car is not always the best, especially when driving up inclines, the car handles well at all times, brakes efficiently, and the engine is more than capable of sustaining power on level ground. One drawback is the limited cargo space, which may not accommodate bulky items such as strollers and yard work tools. Additionally, some aesthetic features such as the plastic on the steering wheel components and cloth seats show signs of wear even with normal use. Overall, I highly recommend the 2013 Sonata to those seeking a fuel-efficient, reliable vehicle that performs to average standards.

After three years of ownership, the motor unexpectedly locked up. Despite my confusion, I am confident in my ability to handle this situation and will explore my options for resolving the issue.

I purchased a 2013 Sonata new last year and have been experiencing issues with Hyundai and the dealership regarding the advertised gas mileage of 24 to 35 with 28 combined. Despite my best efforts, I have only been able to achieve 23 mpg on a flat stretch of highway through Ohio, and as low as 10 mpg in the hills. However, after careful consideration and analysis, I am confident that this issue can be resolved. I would recommend seeking further assistance from Hyundai and the dealership to address this matter.

The 2013 Sonata is a good-looking car. I traded in my 2010 Elantra for it, but I have to say that the Elantra is a better car overall. The ride on the Sonata can be a bit rough, especially at highway speeds, which may lead to abnormal tire wear. The GPS/Radio/Bluetooth/AC combination is not very user-friendly, as it is poorly designed and difficult to use. The combination design only allows you to control one function at a time. For instance, if you are on a call while using the navigator and you need to make a turn, you may miss it. Unfortunately, the voice recognition feature is also not very good. Personally, I prefer using an external GPS instead of the built-in one.

Hi there! I noticed that you own a Hyundai Sonata 2013 Limited and have already driven it for 18 K miles. I just wanted to say that the Hyundai Sonata is a great car overall! It has a powerful engine, great design, and several added features that come at a lower price point. Additionally, it has very good safety ratings, which is always a plus. Of course, like any car, there are some compromises made by the company in making this car, which can be somewhat annoying. But overall, I think you made a great choice with the Hyundai Sonata!
