SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-06
- VIN: KMHGH4JH3EU
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I was driving my 2014 Hyundia Equus on the interstate going 65 mph when my from suspension collapsed. The air ride suspension failed as I was driving. The car became unstable as my safety and the safety of those around me could have been catstrophic. By the Grace of God, I was unharmed and able to get off the road without harming anyone in the process. The turning Ratius was cut to 1/4 of its full capabilities as the entire front of the car has collapsed completely where the tire is rubbing against the top of the wheel well. Hyundia's solution is for me to convert me entire suspension to a third-party coil kit as they no longer make the airbag components to fix my problem. They also want to charge $6,000 for the process. Imagine not being able to find a key safety component for a 9-year-old car forcing the owner to pay $6,000 for a complete conversion that isn't even supported by Hyundia?! They literally took ZERO responsibility for their lack of sound engineering. Another alarming fact is no warning lights or messages appeared before or after, it's like the car didn't even register the problem.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,WHEELS PROBLEM

- VIN: KMHGH4JH0EU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,WHEELS
- Summary: On November 2014, purchased Hyundai Equus from Bob King Hyundai located in Winston-Salem, NC. Within a month, our headlights flashed on and off for a brief second. Occurred more often after that and the dealer checked the car to resolve problem. Nothing found. Months later, problem got more severe and once again dealer tried to fix and could not find a problem. Two or three times car went back to dealer and also a Hyundai dealer in Hickory, NC and once again, nothing was found defective. Over the past year, car has experience longer periods of light going off. Recorded on Dash-Cam at 1:00am on Interstate 77 lost of lights for 5 seconds at 70mph. I can supply a copy of that event if needed. I would say that I traveled over 300-500 feet without lights at that speed which could have been fatal. No warming lights or messages about the fault. I wrote the President of Hyundai Motor Company on December 3, 2022 with certified mail and return receipt and have not heard or been contacted by the company. I think this is a possible accident waiting to happen and injuries being incurred. Please help me with this issue as the safety of me and my family are at stake. Thank you for your attention into this matter. Cordially, Fred Crump 4958 River Bend road Claremont, NC 28610 Cell: 828-244-5555 hom: 828-459-7080

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-27
- VIN: KMHGH4JH6EU
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Which vehicles this affects: 2011-2016 Hyundai Equus. All trim levels. This affects every Hyundai Equus, as all headlights are identical throughout all model years and trims. I am the administrator for the Facebook group of this car, and am part of the automotive lighting industry. I can confirm that everyone I’ve asked (several hundred people) have experienced this issue. I have owned 3 of these vehicles, all different model years, and can also confirm each vehicle had this issue. What happened: I came within inches of hitting a pedestrian crossing the road because the distance vision my headlights are supposed to offer has effectively been eliminated. My reaction time is now greatly reduced as I can no longer identify hazards beyond 38ft in front of my car using low beams. Why did this happen: The reflective coating on the bowl of the HID low beam projector is incapable of handling the UV/heat emitted by the stock HID bulb, and burns off. Complaints similar to this that resulted in recall: This is identical to what happened with the Acura RLX LED headlights, in which they had to issue a recall. Things I’d like to add: This is not a normal “wear and tear” item. The reflective coating of the headlight is THE most important part of the headlight, as without it the light can not be formed into a beam whatsoever. It is not a user serviceable item, nor is it accessible for repair. The entire headlight must be replaced, and the brand new headlight has the same issue. My headlights now only provide enough light to show me things up to 38 feet away, even while being aimed properly. This is a critical failure that has no viable solution without NHTSA’s intervention. Image of the problem: I have attached an image of the reflector bowl to show how the critical reflective coating has nearly entirely burnt off. For reference, the bowl shown in the photo SHOULD have a completely mirror finish. I have also attached their response to my report.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-14
- VIN: kmhgh4jh7eu
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Car is equipped with an air bag suspension system. There was a failure with the airbags around 18 months ( in 2016) of the car being put in service. I was driving on a hway at 70 mph w/grandkids in the car when the airgbags failed and the nose of the car immediately went down and the car started to veer. Luckily there was no other cars around me and I was able to slow down and pull off the hway. Coincidentally, I was just a mile from the dealership and immediately took the car to them and they gave me loaner car and took it in to repair under warranty. Approximately 18 months later, the air bags failed again and the car was just past warranty so I paid for the repair but contacted Hyundai and they reimbursed me.Hyundai told me they had problems with the design of the airbags and redesigned it which is what my car was then equipped with. The air bag system has failed twice more since then. The most recent incident caused many problems with the car. The air bag system had a leak and caused the compressor to keep filling them. I don't believe this compressor was built to be in use so much and caused my battery and alternator to fail, then the compressor itself finally failed. All this took place because of the faulty suspension air bag system. I believe Hyundai was negligent in not issuing a recall when the airbags originally failed back in 2016 as it could have led to a bad accident. I went on line and found many chat rooms with people having had the same or similar experiences to me. Hyundai is well aware of the problems with the system yet has chosen to ignore it and hope the problem goes away. Because of all the problems with this suspension, they have since done away with it and gone to a standard suspension system on all the newer cars that are similar to mine ( now Genisis). They need to do something for all the older cars still on the road with this old suspension. The date listed below is for the last incident mentioned in this document.

- Summary: CAR STARTS ACCELERATING ON ITS OWN AFTER LONG HIGHWAY DRIVES ONCE CRUISE CONTROL IS DISENGAGED. MESSAGE APPEARS 'SERVICE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY. VEHICLE SPEED LIMITED DUE TO MALFUNCTION' WHEN IN FACT VEHICLE CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE. PLACING CAR IN 'PARK' CAUSES ENGINE TO REV OUT OF CONTROL. RESTARTING THE CAR DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME FOUR TIMES IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS, ONLY AFTER DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 3 1/2 HOURS. I'VE READ NEARLY IDENTICAL DESCRIPTIONS ONLINE. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-12
- VIN: KMHGH4JH5EU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL. THE CAR HAS ABOUT 48000 MILES. 1) WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, BRAKE SELF APPLIES FORCEFULLY AT TIMES WHEN PASSING OR BEING PASSED BY OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ADJACENT LANES ON BOTH SIDES, ALMOST CREATING REAR-END COLLISIONS ON A FEW OCCASIONS. 2) WHEN RESETTING THE CRUISE CONTROL TO THE PREVIOUS SETTING, IT CONTINUES TO ACCELERATE PAST PREVIOUS SETTING (OVER 100 MPH) UNTIL BEING MANUALLY DISENGAGED. 3) AT TIMES, AT HIGHWAY OR LOCAL SPEED, THE ENGINE WOULD CUT OFF BRIEFLY WHILE SHOWING A QUICKLY FLASHED MESSAGE, THEN ENGINE WOULD POWER-UP AGAIN A FEW SECONDS LATER FOR NORMAL DRIVING. 4) TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND ADVISED THAT MOISTURE INSIDE THE RIGHT REAR TAIL LIGHT HOUSING WAS THE CAUSE FOR THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OR DAMAGED AND ACCORDING TO MANY MECHANICS I HAVE CONSULTED, THE FISSURE ON TAIL LIGHT HOUSING IS PROBABLY DUE TO POOR WORKMANSHIP FROM THE FACTORY. DEALER COST FOR THIS REPAIR, $1800.00. THE DASHBOARD COVER IS LIFTING OFF (GETTING UNGLUED) FROM ITS BASE DUE TO THE FLORIDA HEAT. COST FOR REPAIR, MORE THAN $4,000. DUE TO THE INCESSANT NUMBER OF DAILY ROBOCALLS, PLEASE CONTACT BY PHONE TEXT OR EMAIL. THANK YOU

The only complaints I had about this vehicle were the navigation system and gas mileage. The navigation system was not very user-friendly and I found myself using my Garmin GPS most of the time. Additionally, the gas mileage was not as good as some of its competitors. As a realtor, I need a reliable navigation system and good gas mileage, which is why I ultimately decided to switch to a Land Rover HSE. Although the gas mileage is still not great, I am enjoying the fun driving experience that the Land Rover provides. I have found that a limousine-type vehicle is just not my style.

You made an excellent choice with this car!

I really love my ride! It has everything I need, and I can even hear my passengers when they speak from the back seat. It handles great in the rain and on most roads, and you don't feel the bumps or hear road noise. This is the third one my grandfather and I have bought, along with four of the Genesis. The only downfall is that dealerships near me have no clue how to work on them. I think the navigation updates should be free to access and buy, rather than having to go to a dealership like Superior Hyundai, who are clueless about how to work on the vehicle, let alone update the system. Luckily, we have found an amazing mechanic who can do anything when it comes to working on my Equus and others we have bought to resell. The 2013 is by far the best; we have spent $0.00 on fixing anything major, and all we've needed is basic maintenance like oil changes and air filters. I highly recommend the 2012 and 2013 Equus years and do not recommend the 2011; the air ride system on that year is awful, along with all the other issues that the dealer could not fix. I love that wherever I go, I don't see my same car in the parking spots. I always get compliments and am asked what kind of car it is. Once I open the door, people are always amazed. It's truly a beautiful ride! I absolutely love mine!

I've owned this car (2013 Hyundai Equus) for the past 3 years and I am very pleased with its performance. I am now ready to purchase another one, a 2016 model, and I have already started the process.

After owning 14 Equus for about 10 months, I can't help but feel like I've been taken advantage of by the Germans for over 15 years.

This car has the potential to be amazing, but unfortunately, it has not been working properly. I have spent a lot of time at the shop trying to fix the issues, but I have only been met with excuses and unhelpful responses. The air conditioner only blows cold air when it is set to max cold, and the seat memory has been malfunctioning. It took multiple visits to the dealer to finally get the issue resolved. Additionally, the front end has been going out of alignment frequently, which has been blamed on my driving, despite my previous experience with other cars. The computer system has also been unreliable, with the sensors not always detecting cars to the left and right, and the rear camera occasionally blanking out. The headrest on the passenger side front seat is now rattling due to the car shaking, and the analog clock is running fast. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that they can be resolved with the help of a friendly and understanding mechanic.I was informed that my car has a safety feature that prevents it from moving unless the seat belt is fastened. However, my car has had an issue where it tries to move even when the brakes are applied and I receive a message stating that a door or trunk is open and the seat belt is not fastened. Despite the doors and trunk being closed, the brakes only release when I fasten my seat belt. I have evidence in the form of pictures and videos that prove this issue. Additionally, I have experienced a problem where the doors do not unlock when I open them while the car is not in park. Although I was told that this is a safety feature, I found that the shift lever would not unlock the doors, but the door lock button did. Unfortunately, the dealer was not helpful in resolving these issues and tried to shift the blame elsewhere. I have owned many cars in the past, and they either worked or did not work, but my Hyundai sometimes works and sometimes does not. I have also had issues with getting reports from the dealer, which makes it difficult to get help from a lawyer. Today, I will be taking my car back to the dealer to get the clock, front end, and rattling headrest fixed. I would advise against buying a Hyundai as they may look nice, but they do not have the same quality as Mercedes or Lexus. They didn't treat you right, they didn't service you right, and they didn't help when you had a problem. It's frustrating when they say they don't make any money diagnosing problems, why would they even say that? But don't worry, I'm here to help. Let's get your car fixed or return that lemon! :)

The 2014 Equus is a great ride and very comfortable and quiet. However, it has not been very reliable. I have had to replace the transmission, air suspension system, rear view mirror and power seats. Fortunately, I purchased the extended warranty, which covered the repairs that would have cost nearly $20,000 without it.

If you've previously owned a Lexus, you may find the Equus to be lacking. Unfortunately, after only 4 months of ownership and 2800 miles, I've noticed quite a few paint chips on the rocker panels due to stepping in and out of the car. It seems to be a common issue, as both sides are affected. Unlike Lexus, the Equus has a piece of painted plastic instead of a metal plate, which I believe is an engineering flaw. However, I was informed that this isn't covered under warranty as it was caused by the user. Additionally, there is a small tear on the driver's side door leather. I don't have enough space to discuss the buying experience, but it's not one I would like to repeat. One dealer used bait and switch tactics, while another added unnecessary charges.

Before purchasing my Equus, I looked at several cars. The dealers kept telling me how reliable the Equus was and emphasized their valet service. Overall, I have been happy with the car's performance. However, during the summer, I noticed that the interior of the car would get too hot even with the AC at maximum settings. I contacted Equus, and they set up an appointment with Alexandria Hyundai. As part of their valet service, they were supposed to pick up the car at my location and deliver a luxury loaner car, either an Equus or Genesis. Unfortunately, Alexandria Hyundai had to cancel three times because they only had one luxury loaner car. When I expressed my frustration, I was told that the person who had the loaner car was not satisfied with his service, so they were still working on his car. I contacted Equus customer assistance again, and they scheduled an appointment with Fairfax Hyundai. They were supposed to provide a Genesis as a replacement car, but they showed up an hour late and brought a Hyundai Sonata instead. If Equus wants to compete with the big boys like Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, and Infiniti, they should put up or shut up. We were considering purchasing a Genesis as our second car, but based on the unkept promises of Equus, I guess we won't be spending any more of our money on a Hyundai. My advice to you is to spend the extra bucks and get a car that has some support behind it, not just a lot of hot air.
