Hyundai Equus problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Equus (Korean: 현대 에쿠스; RR: Hyundai Equus) was manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company from 1999 to 2016 over two generations, as a full-size car, four-door, five passenger luxury sedan with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The nameplate deriving from the Latin, equus, meaning "horse."

In 2009, Hyundai released the second generation with a rear-wheel drive platform. As of August 2014, the second generation is sold in South Korea, Russia, China, United States, Canada, Central America, and South America — as well as in the Middle East under the Hyundai Centennial nameplate.

On November 4, 2015, Hyundai officially announced it would move the Genesis model to Hyundai's new luxury vehicle division, Genesis Motor. The 2016 successor to the Hyundai Equus was rebranded as Genesis G90 (EQ900 in Korea until 2018).

Common Hyundai Equus problems

The Hyundai Equus, a full-size luxury sedan introduced in 2011, has been praised for its top-shelf refinements and powerful 468-hp V8 engine, which rivals its luxury market counterparts like the Lexus LS, Audi A8, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. However, the Equus is not without its common problems.

One of the most prevalent issues with the Hyundai Equus is its air suspension system, which tends to fail at higher mileage. Some of the most common air suspension problems include uneven ride height, sagging corners, compressor issues, and uneven tire wear. These problems typically stem from two main factors: component design and system complexity. The air suspension system relies on pressurized air bags made from flexible rubber and plastic, which can wear out over time. Additionally, the flexible rubber air lines that carry air from the compressor to the air springs are prone to punctures and tears. The ride height sensors, which move up and down while taking readings, can also wear down, leading to system malfunctions.

Another common problem with the Hyundai Equus is strut failures, which can cause the vehicle to sag to the ground like a low-rider.

Electrical issues have also been a common complaint among Hyundai Equus owners, with the car ranking 12th in reliability out of 30 Hyundai models.

The Equus' rarity in the US market can also pose a problem for potential buyers, as the availability of parts may be limited. This was a concern raised by a Hyundai Equus owner, who warned of the difficulty in finding parts for the low volume car.

In summary, the Hyundai Equus is a powerful and luxurious sedan that rivals its luxury market counterparts. However, its air suspension system and electrical issues are common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. The rarity of the car in the US market can also pose a challenge for potential buyers, as the availability of parts may be limited.

  • VIN: KMHGH4JH8FU
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Within last two years I've been dealing with random and intermittent headlight flickering/turning off when the light stalk switch is in AUTO mode. Also, the cabin lights flicker and turn off at the same time when headlights do. It is very dangerous when it happens during night driving. Luckily problem can be overridden by switching the stalk to ON modes and the interior cluster lights and headlights come back on again. Problem seems to be happening only when in AUTO mode. I talked to dealer, they tried to replicate the problem without success. Problem happens to me at least once a month. I spent lot of time reading about this problem in forums, and found one same comment on the Equus vehicle and many on Genesis which was sold in much higher volumes. It seems to be the same problem, and Hyundai has issued the extended warranty program (but for Genesis 15-16 cars) 20-BE-009H. I firmly believe it's the same problem, its just not many Equus vehicles was sold as Genesis. Please help - we are hardly driving the car at night anymore and we really like it. And dealer didn't want to replace the stalk without being able to properly diagnose/replicate the problem.

I checked with a dealer if they have had any of these type reports and there answer was no they had not. It is very UN-nerving when it happens.

  • Summary: I am unable. To drive my car anywhere. Each time I start my car. All warning lights flash like a Christmas light. It causes the car to suddenly be slowed down. Or not to go full speed? I got the recall notice in the mail 4 weeks ago. My car has been parked in the garage for four months and has been there ever since. I need my car to go to work and I don't know what else to do. I can only do so much by using the cars of families and friends, but I need my car back because it's inconveniencing them too as well.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
  • Date Complaint: 2023-11-07
  • VIN: KMHGH4JH7GU
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: There are actually 3 problems that my dealer has not been able to fix/diagnose. The first is the headlights, when set to the auto position, they will often turn off and on while driving at night. Service says that they were unable to duplicate the problem, but it keeps happening. The second is the Navigation system updates, that they claim they cannot provide any updates to my 2016 Equus (just about all other years and models are available). The third is the voice recognition system, which only recognizes my voice for phone calls, but not for directions. The dealer (Gettel Hyundai of Sarasota FL) had my vehicle for two weeks and was not able to fix any of these problems, although they charged me over $500 for diagnostics. If I look at the Hyundai Owners Forum, I see these problems documented over and over and I provided the dealership with that information to no avail. I also notified the BBB of my problems, (case# [XXX]), but they are not returning my calls to them in order to update them on my lack of resolutions to my problems. What if anything can I do to pursue this ? I have copied in the CEO of Hyundai USA (J. Munoz) and after initially designating someone under him to get involved, has since been unresponsive (since October 6th, 2023). Latest negative Hyundai Equus car reviews

  1. Kayleigh Haley 2025-06-06

    Vehicle year: 2012

Around a year after purchase, I noticed that the car's performance and gas mileage were not as good as they used to be. Additionally, I began to hear a loud knocking sound from the engine, but there were no warning lights indicating any issues. When I took it to the dealer, they found that the oil was three quarts low and suspected that the engine had already been damaged. After some investigation, it seems that this is a systemic problem that affects Hyundai Equus and Genesis models with the same engine. Unfortunately, Hyundai does not seem willing to take responsibility for the defective engine, especially in the higher horsepower 2012 models. This has been a major setback for their aspirations to compete as a luxury brand. In fact, they have even pulled the plug on the Equus brand. Despite lots of aggravation, they eventually replaced the engine and the car has been good, although the service has been lacking.

    Vehicle year: 2012

The engine on my 2012 Equus started knocking severely at 62,000 miles, despite the absence of any warning signs such as a check engine light or low oil light. It is worth noting that the warranty on the car expired at 60,000 miles.

  3. Guillermo Hammes 2025-05-16

    Vehicle year: 2014

In 2013, I purchased a new Eqqus and also bought the extended warranty. Unfortunately, the first incident occurred when I was rear-ended, which put my car in a body shop for more than two months, waiting for one screw from Hyundai. In 2018, at approximately 90,000 miles, the transmission failed, but Hyundai USA was gracious enough to replace it as a humanitarian courtesy. However, in the same year, the rear suspension collapsed, and since the warranty had expired, I had to pay out of pocket. In 2019, the struts failed, and again, I had to pay out of pocket. In 2020, the steering failed, and all four bushings failed simultaneously, which I also had to pay for out of pocket. Additionally, I had to replace the front windshield, which cost more than the deductible. I am now faced with the dilemma of whether to keep the car and wait for the engine to blow up or purchase another car, which certainly will not be another Hyundai product. Wish me luck. I will explore 'The Lemon Law' in California. This car was good, then went horribly bad. (I think I've been on this website earlier detailing car issues)

If you're looking for a car with longevity, it's best to avoid the V8 version of this model. Many owners have reported issues with oil consumption and engine failure, which can be costly to repair. Additionally, these cars are known to have major electrical and transmission problems. It's important to do your research before making a purchase. While there are some high mileage V8's still on the road, they are few and far between. It's best to consider other options to avoid potential issues down the line. Thank you for considering this information.

This car is truly amazing! The Hyundai Equus Ultimate SPEED is a powerhouse with 429 hp that you can really feel. You can even take off the traction control and put it into sports mode for an extra boost! The driver mode options include Normal, Sport, and Snow, while the driver display shows current speed, cruise speed, lane departure lines, blindside warnings, and GPS directional arrows with mileage. The smart cruise control is perfect for those pesky traffic jams. The headlights curve as you turn, and the fog lights provide extra visibility. The rear indicator lights are brighter and yellow, and the side mirrors automatically fold in when parking (you can also manually fold them in too). When in reverse, you have a rear camera, bird's eye view, and the side mirrors automatically rotate downwards to see the lines for parking. They also automatically defrost and have yellow indicator lights on the front. How welcoming! When you walk up to the car when it's locked, there are lights below the side mirror which light up and fold out before you unlock the doors (without removing the key or having to press a key). When you open from the passenger side or rear doors, all the doors will unlock. Once inside, you'll feel all the luxury. The Equus logo appears on the driver display and plays some music. Once you start the vehicle, the same logo appears on the large screen. There's a large screen in the front and two 9.8The car comes with 2 memory options for the driver's seat, and all seats (except the rear middle seat) have heating and air conditioning. I recently purchased the 2014 Equus Signature in black with tan interior and it's been an amazing experience. Before making my decision, I shopped around and compared it to the Mercedes S550, BMW 750 and the Lexus 460. In my opinion, there is no comparison, the Equus outperforms them all. The interior is simply awesome, with exceptionally comfortable seats, nicely positioned controls and a tremendous stereo. The amenities are exactly what you would expect from a car of this class and the fit and finish is comparable to cars costing $40K more. The performance is similar to both the S550 and the BMW 750 in acceleration, while the ride is more closely related to the S550. I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a top-notch vehicle. UPDATE- The car currently has 46K miles and seems to only get better. I have not had a single issue with it (knock on wood) and I still can't say enough about this car. Keep up the great work!

I absolutely love my Equus Ultimate! It's one of the nicest cars I've ever owned. The car is so quiet and handles really well. The design is also very nice. I used to have an S Class Mercedes, but I decided to step out of the box and try the Equus. Some people were skeptical about paying that much for a Hyundai, but after they rode in it and enjoyed the amenities, they were convinced. One guy who even owned a Rolls Royce said he was considering buying an Equus. People often ask me about the wing emblem on the hood and I always tell them about the car. I have not been disappointed with my purchase. The Equus Connect customer service is also top notch, they answer every question and take care of any concerns immediately. I can confidently say that my Equus is a class extraordinaire!

While my wife was getting her Pugi Mazda serviced at Pugi Hyundai, I had the chance to visit the Hyundai store. There, I saw a 2016 Equus on the showroom floor and was pleasantly surprised by the pricing, which was made even better by Hyundai rebates. I learned that the Equus was going away and being replaced with the G-90, so without hesitation, I drove it home on my 29th wedding anniversary. I have owned 80 cars since I was 16, including BMW, MBZ, Cadillac, Buick, Ford, Pontiac, and more, and I have never purchased the same model twice. However, the Equus is an amazing vehicle and the greatest value luxury car I have ever owned. I was thrilled to get the last of the best. My advice to anyone looking for a car is to not focus on the badge or brand, but rather to drive it, appreciate its beauty, and recognize its value. With the $50-$70k savings, you could even buy diamonds for your wife or partner. Lastly, don't wait to buy one. Period.
