2011 Hyundai Elantra touring problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
- VIN: KMHDH4AE2BU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving my 2011 Elantra, and when I needed to brake, it didn't feel the same as usual. The brake pedal felt kind of soft. After a while, when I needed to brake at an intersection, the brakes completely failed. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor, and there was no braking. My speed was about 30 mph, and I couldn't stop. I was really lucky that there were no other cars at the intersection, and I just passed the stop sign without stopping. I was so scared. I didn't understand what happened and immediately changed my plans to drive home. Luckily, I was only a few minutes away. I used the hand brake for the rest of the drive. After I parked the car, I saw brake fluid leaking at the bottom, and when I moved the plastic cover, I saw that the brake line was completely rusty.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: KMHDH4AE0BU
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Our car failed inspection due to a safety issue. Two seats belt are frayed. The photo shows the center belt is frayed where it enters the back seat. The Hyundai dealer wanted more than $1,000 to replace. I went to a local auto wrecker for a used replacements. He had two 2011 Hyundai Elanrtas. Both had the same seat belt damage on the center seat belt. The center belt has been used very little over the life of the car. Since all three vehicles had the same damage it appears that this is not due to normal wear and tear. I feel that Hyundai should replace the seat belt at no cost

The problem started approximately two months ago. There were no warning lights.

I have a driveway and do not feel compelled parking car in the street where a potential vehicle fire could harm my neighbors. It is taking far too long for a remedy in this case. I would like for Hyundai to get this resolved. Right now I have disconnected the battery for fear of fire. Luckily i currently have another vehicle to drive.
SUSPENSION,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-29
- VIN: KMHDH4AEXBU
- Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: UnKnown. When financing the vehicle through Adonis Auto Group I was unaware of the unrepaired safety recall. Also I am under the impression nothing was done to the car before purchasing it, I have had to make repairs to the car only after 10,000 - 15,000 miles of driving. For example replacing the control arm, axle, brake hardware. My point is they are selling cars without repairing them and not advising the customer upon purchase. I also asked for the repair paperwork for what has been done to the car before purchase and never received it.

I did not have it fixed at that time.(I believe mileage was about 110, 00 at that point). STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
- VIN: KMHDH4AE1BU
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Starting in the summer of 2023 my car started making screeching noises when applying brakes, turning, etc. All 4 brakes and rotors were replaced. My car continues to screech. More concerning is that the steering wheel started clicking when turning in the Fall of 2023 and has progressively worsened, now clicking whenever moved left or right even a few inches. The steering feels very loose. Although the car is a 2011, it only has 36,000 original miles on it. This is very frustrating and feels very unsafe to drive. Repair/evaluation appointment with the dealership is scheduled for 2/1/24 to see what they say. My issues sounds VERY familiar to many other complaints on here and from other research I have done. I am not sure why this is not a recall to correct this common problem in the Elantra. Other Hyundai models have had steering column recalls. I see that the rubber coupling warranty in the power steering assembly was extended to 10 yrs/100,000 miles, however I was never informed of any safety or warranty issues when purchasing this vehicle in early February of 2020 which would have been within the 10 years. Extra disappointing is that the previous 2 owners were the sales manager and general manager of the dealership where I purchased it from.

- Summary: When I start the engine, I hear pronounced knocking sounds in the engine for approximately 1-2 seconds, and they are quite loud. As the engine warms up, the knocking persists, albeit at a lower volume. The ongoing knocks are not as loud, resembling a consistent noise similar to that of a diesel engine, although it is not a diesel-powered vehicle

2011 Hyundai Elantra touring recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra touring.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
- Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured December 15, 2009, through May 7, 2012. The affected vehicles have a support bracket attached to the headliner that may become displaced during a side curtain airbag deployment.
- Consequence: If the headliner support bracket makes contact with an occupant during a crash, it may cause a laceration injury.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will apply adhesive strips to the headliner, free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 117.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Positive 2011 Hyundai Elantra touring car reviews

The 2010 Elantra Touring SE/Manual is a fantastic car that is both well-built and easy to drive. It offers plenty of legroom and comfort for both front and back passengers. I recently traded in my 2000 Hyundai Elantra GLS Manual, which I had driven for 10 years, and I am confident that the Touring will hold up just as well. The Touring handles the road with ease, and the cloth interior is exceptionally attractive. This car delivers an incredibly smooth ride and is an absolute pleasure to drive on long trips.
-
At 3 am on a dry day, I had to brake for not one, but three deer standing in the roadway. I applied the brakes firmly, but not in a panic mode, using gradual and firm pressure on the pedal. Unfortunately, the back end of the car fishtailed erratically, making me feel like I was going to lose control of the vehicle. Despite this, the car still gets great mileage and has only 50,000 miles on it, despite being a 2011 model. It seems that the back end of the car may be too light, which could explain its response.
-
Contrary to the previous reviewer, I have had a very positive experience with this car. Although I have only owned it for a few weeks, I find the ride to be extremely smooth and the seating position to be very comfortable. Despite being the GLS version, it has all the features I need. I previously owned a 2002 Subaru Outback, which I also loved, but I wanted something smaller yet still spacious with a hatchback. The Touring was the perfect choice for me, and even my 100lb lab fits comfortably in the back. The car boasts great safety features, and I enjoy driving it around. Additionally, I love the XM radio and was able to get 29mpg driving mostly around town, which is impressive. Although the headlights could be better, overall, I am confident in my choice of car.
-
I've driven my Touring for about 7,000 miles now, and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed with it. The cargo area is spacious enough to comfortably transport my two dogs, one of which is quite large. Despite its ample cargo space, the car still feels compact and handles like a dream. The build quality is top-notch, just like my previous two Hyundai's. I was pleasantly surprised by the acceleration, which is quite satisfactory given the engine's horsepower rating and aged design. The best part of the deal is that I consistently get above the published mileage ratings. On a 1.5 hour trip with the cruise control set at 70mph, I get an impressive 33.5-34 mpg, and at 76mph, I still get 32-32.5mpg. Overall, it's a great car!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2011 version of this car. Even though it was initially a European product that Hyundai imported to North America for 2 or 3 years, I've found it to be highly reliable. While some publications have reported that it has a worse-than-average frequency of repairs, I've only had to take it in for minor problems that my local dealer was able to fix in an hour or less each time. The 5-speed manual is also very pliant and well-synchronized going both up and down. The only areas I've noticed for improvement are the seat comfort for longer trips and the amount of road noise that gets into the cabin. Overall, this car has never let me down. Thanks for listening!

The purchase experience was great and overall it's a good car. However, I must say that it's not the best car for snowy conditions. The combination of light weight, touchy brakes, and OEM tires that are not suitable for snow makes it difficult to manage even with just a skim of snow on the roads. If you live in a snowy area, it's recommended to replace the original tires before winter. If not for this, I would have rated the performance and fun to drive much higher.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I purchased in January 2010. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the value I received for the price I paid ($16k). There were a few things that took a little getting used to compared to my previous car, a 1997 Escort Wagon. For instance, the frame behind the driver's windows creates an over-the-left-shoulder blind spot that can be a bit tricky to navigate in moderate traffic. However, the car's steering is tight and responsive, so it's easy to keep it going in the right direction. I usually drive on the highway during off-hours and average around 70 mph. While I think I'm getting about 25 mpg, which is a bit less than the 30 mpg I got with my Escort, it's worth noting that the Hyundai is a heavier car. Additionally, the window ledge is higher, which is great for arm hanging purposes. Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase and would recommend this car to others. Thanks for reading!

I bought my Hyundai Elantra Touring brand new in April 2011 and I'm currently looking for a new car in September 2017. Although it has only done 60,000 miles, it has had some issues with the sway bar and sway bar links, which we've had to replace at least once a year. Additionally, it seems to be developing some transmission issues, which makes it jerky when switching between 2nd and 3rd gear. Despite these issues, I like the size of the car and it has a pretty decent gas mileage of around 30 mpg. However, we've had to spend a lot of money on repairs, which has been frustrating. My in-laws also bought the same car a few months after us and had similar issues, which is disappointing. I'm looking forward to getting a new car soon. Although my experience with this car has left me with a poor impression of Hyundai, I'll be going back to Hondas from now on.

The car has some noticeable issues such as peeling leather on the steering wheel and carpet floor pulling away. However, the dealer has fixed these issues and there have been no engine problems so far. The car is quite noisy due to the low profile tires and every small rock feels like a pain. The floor mats are already showing signs of wear and tear. Despite these issues, I am considering selling it and purchasing a VW or a similar car.
