2010 Hyundai Elantra touring problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common 2010 Hyundai Elantra touring problems

The 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring is a compact sedan that has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues range from transmission problems, paint problems, steering problems, airbag problems, and recalls.

Transmission problems are the most prevalent and serious issue in the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring. The most common problem is slipping transmissions, which typically appears at around 65,000 miles. The transmission must be replaced, which will cost over $3,000. Carcomplaints.com notes that there is an emerging trend of transmission problem with the 2010 Elantra at fairly early mileage. So far, owners report having the transmission replaced under warranty, but that won't hold up for much longer. It may be a bit premature, but for now, the 2010 Elantra has been given a "CLUNKER" rating just to be safe.

Paint problems are also common in the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring. Many Elantras experience paint peeling at about 55,000 miles. When paint is not properly maintained, it starts to peel, and repainting the affected areas costs about $1,000 per panel.

Steering problems are another issue that affects the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring. The EPS light turns on, and the vehicle loses steering while driving. The affected vehicle loses control. According to NHTSA Recall Campaign Number 127, the Steering Wheel needs to be replaced. But in some cases, even this procedure doesn't fix the issue. In the first 80,000 miles, the steering column begins to make clicking noises as well. The problem is with the steering column and coupling, which can be fixed for about $800.

Airbag problems are also a significant issue in the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring. The front airbags for the driver and passenger occasionally failed to inflate. Some 2010 Elantra owners state that airbags deploy without accidents or just when the car hits a bump on slow speed. Recalls are also a significant issue in the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring. There are four recalls, with the electronic power steering assistance recall being the most serious because it can fail and raise the risk of an accident. The other recalls are: Anti-Lock Brake Module Shorts Can cause Fire Hazard, Headliner Support Bracket Comes Loose During Side Curtain Air Bag Deployment and The Brake Light Switch May Fail Prematurely.

In conclusion, the 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring has faced several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues range from transmission problems, paint problems, steering problems, airbag problems, and recalls. Proper maintenance and regular check-ups can help prevent some of these issues, but it is essential to be aware of them before purchasing this vehicle.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12
  • VIN: KMHDU4AD5AU
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My 2010 Elantra just started making a clicking noise when slightly turning the steering wheel back and forth. Doing online research, I discovered it is a common problem on Hyundai, with the same symptoms as my problem, that there is a rubber star damper gear in the electronic motor system inside the steering column that fails, it completely falls apart, and is very common defect in these vehicles. No warning lamp was illuminated. I am now stuck without a car that I can not drive for fear the whole steering may fail. Because it involves the steering, Hyundai is putting all our safety at risk knowing there is a problem with this “cheap rubber” gear part that controls the steering and is prone to failing. The fix is around $800. Many people have complained on UTube comments. Hyundai should be made to recall and fix all these defective Hyundai vehicles. As a safety authority, NHTSA should stop unsafe vehicle production practices when uncovered and dealers force to fix them all.

They then raised the car in the shop and told me that the rear upper-control arm had rusted through and broken, causing the wheel to break off. They showed me a photo of this. I was also told that had this happened on a highway at a higher speed, there could have been fatalities because control of the car would have been seriously affected. I contacted Hyundai about this and they told me to take to a dealer to be looked at. I refused to pay for this inspection and I now do not trust Hyundai.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-22
  • VIN: KMHDB8AE4AU
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra. On Saturday, July 22, 2023, after the car was put into park in my fathers driveway and the emergency brake put on, the front driver and passenger bags deployed. The force of it's deployment cracked the windshield in several places on the passenger side. There were no warning lights or indications that this would occur. The car was in park. The seatbelts are in a locked (not able to retract) form, so the car is not drivable. The two individuals in the front seat were disoriented for a short time. All 4 passengers in the car experienced ringing in the ears for approximately 3 hours, but are ultimately, physically alright, however, not mentally. If this had occurred in another setting, the risk of accident or other safety measures would have been grand, but luckily it happened at the home of a family member. The airbag malfunction needs to be eligible to be fixed and not at the expense of me the owner. The car has a camera located in it and it captured all items listed above. The video may be provided. The Hyundai corporate office has been contacted and an incident file opened. The insurance company has been contacted, as well. Nothing has been done with the car, as the corporate office noted that they may need to see it in it's original state.

2010 Hyundai Elantra touring recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2010 Hyundai Elantra touring.

2020-02-04
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
  • Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
2015-02-23
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.
  • Consequence: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will verify the proper operation of the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and update the EPS control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2015. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-671-3059. Hyundai's number for this recall is 127.
2014-06-10
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured December 15, 2009, through May 7, 2012. The affected vehicles have a support bracket attached to the headliner that may become displaced during a side curtain airbag deployment.
  • Consequence: If the headliner support bracket makes contact with an occupant during a crash, it may cause a laceration injury.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will apply adhesive strips to the headliner, free of charge. The recall began on July 28, 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 117.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2010 Hyundai Elantra touring car reviews

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I purchased in January 2010. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the value I received for the price I paid ($16k). There were a few things that took a little getting used to compared to my previous car, a 1997 Escort Wagon. For instance, the frame behind the driver's windows creates an over-the-left-shoulder blind spot that can be a bit tricky to navigate in moderate traffic. However, the car's steering is tight and responsive, so it's easy to keep it going in the right direction. I usually drive on the highway during off-hours and average around 70 mph. While I think I'm getting about 25 mpg, which is a bit less than the 30 mpg I got with my Escort, it's worth noting that the Hyundai is a heavier car. Additionally, the window ledge is higher, which is great for arm hanging purposes. Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase and would recommend this car to others!

The oil seal on the right-hand side of the engine (accessory side, not transmission side) failed due to worn main bearings. This caused the crankshaft to move within the engine block, pushing the oil seal out. Unfortunately, the car's ownership history prevented us from being able to use the 100,000 mile power-train warranty. However, we were fortunate that the repair shop honored their warranty and repaired the engine at no charge. Although it took 5 weeks, we were grateful to have our car back on the road. The engine light recently came on, so we will continue to monitor the situation. Thank you for your understanding.

Overall, it's a great car! I'm so glad I made the switch from an SUV that only averaged 18 mpg to this hatchback that has nearly just as much room and averages about 28 mpg. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Although I wish the base model came with more options (mostly Cruise control!), I still think it's a great value for the price of 15k.

This is my third Hyundai, and it's been the most impressive one so far. It's the perfect little Euro-Style hauler for my wife and me, with just enough room for our dog in the back. I love the way it drives and handles, and for the price, I don't think you'll find a more feature-packed ride. It comes with AC, Power Windows and Doors, ESC, Traction Control, ABS, Tire Pressure Monitor, XM Radio, MP3/IPOD plug-in on a base model GLS? It even tells me the outside temperature! You won't find that in any other vehicle! I used Edmunds.com TMV and competing dealership quotes to purchase it for $1900 UNDER the invoice price. It was the best car buying experience of my life. Thank you, Edmunds!

I recently purchased this car in November 2009 and have only put a little over 500 miles on it. It took us 2 months to find the right car, which was a challenge as we were shopping right after Cash-For-Clunkers when dealership lots were empty! We were drawn to the wagon-style, which is not very popular in America. We also considered the VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI and the Honda Fit, but ultimately chose this one. As it is still in its break-in period, we cannot comment on its mileage yet, but its EPA rating is 23 city, 30 highway (which we hope to improve). The handling is great, and we don't mind the somewhat stiff ride. The SE model has many features that others in its class leave out, such as XM radio, heated seats, and outside mirrors.

We are so glad we chose a Hyundai for the first time! It's an excellent commuter car with fantastic gas mileage. The driving experience is sporty and fun. What impressed us the most is the incredible amount of room inside - the back seat comfortably fits three people and the hatchback trunk can almost fit as much as an SUV. The modern gadgets inside, such as the iPod connector, sunroof, and great stereo with controls on the steering wheel, make it even better. We got a great deal on a good car, and we couldn't be happier!

I love my new car! It's only been 2 weeks since I got it, but I'm already smitten with its chili pepper red color and amazing features. Despite being reasonably priced, it has all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a luxury car. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and the handling is top-notch. I used to own a 2002 Elantra GT, and it was a reliable car that gave me very few problems over the 8 years I owned it. Based on my experience, I have a lot of faith in Hyundai's reliability.
