1989 Oldsmobile Supreme problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is a mid-size car produced by Oldsmobile between 1966 and 1997. It was positioned as a premium offering at the top of the Cutlass range. It began as a trim package, developed its own roofline, and rose during the mid-1970s to become not only the most popular Oldsmobile but the highest selling model in its class.

It was produced as a rear-wheel drive two-door hardtop, sedan, and station wagon into the 1980s, and a convertible through 1972. In 1988 Oldsmobile sought to capitalize on the brand equity of the Cutlass Supreme marque by replacing it with a downsized front-wheel drive model based on the GM10 platform W-platform.

When production ended there was no direct replacement for the Cutlass Supreme, although the Intrigue introduced for 1998 was designed in size and price to replace all the Cutlass models.

Common 1989 Oldsmobile Supreme problems

The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, produced from 1989 to 1997, is known for several common problems that affect its performance and safety. These issues are primarily related to the engine, transmission, suspension, fuel system, brakes, and electrical components.

  1. Engine problems: One of the most common engine problems in the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme is engine misfire, which can be caused by faulty spark plugs, ignition coils, or spark plug wires. Overheating is also a common issue, often caused by a malfunctioning thermostat or a low coolant level. Engine oil leaks are another problem that can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. Engine stalling is also a concern, often caused by a faulty idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body. Timing belt issues can also occur, which can lead to engine damage if the belt breaks. Fuel system problems, such as clogged fuel injectors or a faulty fuel pump, can cause starting problems and reduced fuel efficiency.
  2. Transmission problems: Transmission slipping, jerking, or hesitation when shifting gears are common problems in the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. These issues can be caused by low transmission fluid levels, worn-out clutch plates, or a malfunctioning torque converter. Transmission fluid leaks are also a concern, often caused by a damaged gasket or a leaking seal.
  3. Suspension problems: Suspension problems, such as worn-out shocks and struts, can lead to a bumpy ride and decreased handling. Sway bar links and bushings can also wear out, causing the vehicle to sway or roll excessively during turns.
  4. Electrical problems: Electrical problems, such as faulty wiring or malfunctioning switches, can cause issues with the power windows and door locks. These problems can be frustrating for owners and can lead to costly repairs if not addressed promptly.
  5. Fuel system problems: Fuel system problems, such as clogged fuel injectors or a faulty fuel pump, can cause starting problems and reduced fuel efficiency.
  6. Brake problems: Brake problems, such as worn-out brake pads and rotors, can lead to reduced braking performance and increased stopping distances. Brake fluid leaks and damaged brake lines can also occur, leading to complete brake failure.
  7. Body and interior problems: Rust issues, particularly around the wheel wells and rocker panels, can lead to structural damage if not addressed. Power window problems, door lock problems, and heating and air conditioning problems can also occur, affecting the vehicle's comfort and functionality.

In summary, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, produced from 1989 to 1997, is known for several common problems that affect its performance and safety. These issues are primarily related to the engine, transmission, suspension, fuel system, brakes, and electrical components. Owners of these vehicles should be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of their vehicle.
