2000 Toyota Echo problems
The Toyota Platz (Japanese:トヨタ・プラッツ, Toyota Purattsu) is a subcompact car that was manufactured in Japan by Toyota from 1999 until 2005, when it was replaced by the Belta. Designated by Toyota as the XP10 series, the Platz was also sold in export markets as either the Toyota Yaris or Toyota Echo. The "Yaris" and "Echo" names were also given to the export version of the related Japanese market Vitz hatchback, from which the Platz derives. In Japan, it was available at the Toyopet Store and the Netz Toyota Store dealerships.
Etymology
The name "Platz" is German for "space" (as defined by "the interior room is spacious"). Only straight-four engines were fitted to the Platz, which was sold in Japan as a four-door sedan only. A coupé version was also available in North America where the car was badged "Echo".
History
The Platz was introduced in 1999 as a sedan sold internationally, with a coupé version exclusive to North America following for the 2000 model year. The Platz is closely related to the Vitz hatchback with which it shares front doors, a common interior and mechanical componentry. The running gear is also shared to a lesser degree with the ist and bB, sold in the United States as the Scion xA and xB respectively, and the JDM-only WiLL Vi. The same platform is the base for the JDM-only Probox and Succeed wagons.
In the United States, the Echo sold almost 50,000 units in its first year, with just half that many in 2003. The Echo was an element of Toyota Project Genesis, a failed effort to bring younger buyers to the marque in the United States. The Echo sold in high volumes in Canada, where Toyota also offered the three- and five-door hatchback versions of the Vitz badged as the Echo beginning with the 2004 model year to replace the Echo coupé (which was dropped after 2003). The coupé remained on sale in the United States until the 2005 model year along with the sedan, while the hatchback variants were never sold there. It was the predecessor to the current North American Yaris, sharing many identical features, such as the odd (and somewhat controversial) center placement of the speedometer and gauges, as opposed to in front of the steering wheel. Power options on the Echo are a rare find; most models are equipped with manual windows and locks, air conditioning, and a six-speaker audio system with a CD and/or a cassette player.

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

- VIN: JTDAT123110

- Summary: WHEN YOU ARE IN THE CAR AND THE MANUAL LOCKS ARE LOCKED YOU CAN NOT OPEN THE DOOR. YOU HAVE TO UNLOCK IT FIRST TO OPEN DOOR. NORMALLY A LOCKED DOOR WILL OPEN WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR. THIS CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. THEN WHEN YOU ARE LOCKED IN YOU CAN'T EVEN UNLOCK THE DOOR BY ROLLING THE WINDOW DOWN AND INSERTING THE KEY TO UNLOCK IT. IT WILL NOT WORK. THEREFORE I HAVE TO CRAWL THROUGH THE PASSENGER DOOR AND MESS WITH THE LOCK AND KEY TO GET IT UNLOCKED. I FEEL THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I SEE NO RECALLS ON THIS MATTER. I TALKED TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP THAT SAYS THIS IS NOT FIXABLE. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1

THE CAR HAD QUITE A LOT OF DAMAGE, AND HAD TO BE TOWED AWAY (FOR SAFETY REASONS). HOWEVER, THE AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY!!!! THE COLLISION WAS ENOUGH TO INCAPACITATE THE RADIATOR AND IT WAS HEAD-ON (NOT SIDE OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT). GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES, I WOULD EXPECT THE AIRBAG TO DEPLOY, AND THE POLICE WERE AMAZED THAT IT DIDN'T. SHE WAS WEARING A SEATBELT, WHICH SAVED HER FROM THE WORST. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS, AS MANY VEHICLES OF THIS TYPE ARE REGISTERING THE SAME ISSUE! *JS
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-12-08
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE VEHICLE DISPLAYED PROBLEMS TWICE IN A 24-HOUR PERIOD AS FOLLOWS:THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8TH, 2011: WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LEAVE A PARKING LOT IN REVERSE (WITHOUT MY FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR), THE CAR ENGINE SURGED AS IF THE ACCELERATOR WERE PRESSED DOWN TO THE FLOOR. I IMMEDIATELY PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKES TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM MOVING BACKWARD UNCONTROLLABLY AT A HIGH SPEED. I THEN PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING HARD, BUT IT QUIETED A LITTLE. I TRIED PUTTING THE CAR IN DRIVE TO TEST THAT FUNCTIONALITY, AND IT SEEMED TO BE UNAFFECTED. I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AFTER PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, RE-STARTED IT, AND TRIED TO MOVE AGAIN IN REVERSE. THIS RESULTED IN THE AFOREMENTIONED ENGINE SURGE. I DECIDED TO DRIVE THE CAR AROUND THE PARKING LOT TO TEST FOR DRIVEABILITY AND THERE WERE NO ISSUES AT THIS POINT WITH THE CAR MOVING FORWARD.FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9TH, 2001: DROVE THE CAR TO WORK IN THE MORNING AFTER LETTING IT RUN FOR ABOUT TEN MINUTES DUE TO COLD OUTDOOR TEMPERATURES. AFTER DRIVING THE CAR FOR ABOUT THREE MILES, THE ENGINE BEGAN SURGING ONCE MY SPEED WAS REDUCED TO ABOUT 25 MPH AND CONTINUED TO RUN HARD WHEN THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS. I HAD TO PRESS VERY HARD ON THE BRAKE TO PREVENT THE CAR FROM MOVING FORWARD AT AN UNCONTROLLED SPEED, WHICH POTENTIALLY COULD HAVE RESULTED IN INJURY OF MYSELF, ANOTHER DRIVER, OR PROPERTY. I WAS ABLE TO CAREFULLY GET THE CAR TO MY WORKPLACE, WHERE I PLACED THE CAR IN PARK. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN HARD, AS IF THE ACCELERATOR WERE PRESSED DOWN WITH SIGNIFICANT PRESSURE. I DECIDED TO TEST THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE REVERSE GEAR AGAIN; IT PERFORMED EXACTLY AS IT DID ON DECEMBER 8TH, ONLY MORE SO. WHEN PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, THE ENGINE DID NOT RELAX AND I WAS FORCED TO SHUT OFF THE CAR COMPLETELY. BECAUSE OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS, I WAS UNABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR HOME. NOTE: I DO NOT HAVE FACTORY FLOOR MATS. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-01-01
- VIN: JTDBT1233Y0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THIS IS NOT RELATED TO A SPECIFIC INCIDENT, BUT I FEEL I SHOULD REGISTER A COMPLAINT ABOUT THE BRAKES ON THE 2000 TOYOTA ECHO. THE STOPPING DISTANCE REQUIRED SEEMS EXCESSIVE TO ME, AND I FEEL THAT IT WOULD BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO EVER CAUSE THE CAR TO SKID (LOCK UP THE WHEELS) USING THE BREAKS IF YOU SLAMMED THEM ON IN AN EMERGENCY DESPITE THE CAR NOT HAVING ANTI-LOCK BREAKS. ALL RECALLS HAVE BEEN DONE ON MY CAR AS FAR AS I KNOW. THERE WAS ONE RECALL WHICH INVOLVED THEM REPLACING THE BREAK BOOSTER - I NOTICED DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED BREAKING PERFORMANCE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS RECALL - HOWEVER AFTER ABOUT A YEAR MAYBE, THE CAR RETURNED TO ITS POOR BREAKING PERFORMANCE. NEW BREAK PADS AND SHOES, AND A BRAKE FLUID CHANGE DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. I CALLED TOYOTA A WHILE AGO TO ASK ABOUT THIS, AND ALL THEY COULD TELL ME WAS THAT MY CAR ALREADY HAD THE BREAK RECALL DONE MANY YEARS AGO AND THAT THERE WAS NO NEW RECALL. IT MAY BE WORTH MENTIONING THAT I ALSO HAVE A 2001 TOYOTA ECHO WHICH DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM - SO I DEFINITELY CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE AND I KNOW THAT STOPPING DISTANCE IS MUCH WORSE ON MY 2000 VEHICLE. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-12-30
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: 2000 TOYOTA ECHO. ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK. IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED ONCE, AROUND 263,000 MILES. IRONICALLY, THIS HAPPENED A FEW MONTHS AGO, BEFORE NEWS ABOUT THE LATEST RECALL. THIS CAR, AND ITS NEWER MODEL THE YARIS, ARE NOT PART OF THE RECALL. OCCASIONALLY, I WOULD HEAR A QUIET SQUEAKY SOUND WHEN USING THE GAS PEDAL, BUT IT WAS UNCOMMON. I DO ALL MY OWN CAR WORK, BUT WAS NEVER ABLE TO FIGURE OUT THE CAUSE OF THE NOISE... I'M NOT LOOKING TO HAVE ANYONE CONTACT ME - THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER BEING DRIVEN. I'M JUST REPORTING IT IN CASE ANYONE ELSE WITH AN ECHO REPORTS IT. I DON'T HAVE THE VIN NUMBER HANDY (AT WORK). IF YOU REALLY NEED IT, YOU CAN CONTACT ME, AND I'LL EMAIL IT TO YOU. IT IS THE 4 DOOR SEDAN MODEL. AND IT WAS ONE OF THE EARLY ECHO'S. VIN SERIAL NUMBER WAS IN THE 6XXX RANGE. *TR

AFTER SHIFTING THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK THE ENGINE CONTINUED OPERATING AT HIGH SPEED. THE GAS PEDAL WAS NOT STUCK OR USED AT ANY TIME DURING THIS TIME. THIS OCCURRED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS BOTH AT HIGHWAY AND CITY SPEEDS. IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE OTHER REPORTS OF SIMILAR INCIDENTS WITH THIS CAR. NO PROBLEMS WERE IDENTIFIED BY MECHANIC WHO COULDN'T REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. *TR

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-12-11
- VIN: JTDAT1235Y5
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: SPEEDOMETER CONTINUOUSLY FLUCTUATES WHEN DRIVING BETWEEN SPEEDS OF 0 - 60 MPH WHEN VEHICLE IS COLD. SPEEDOMETER WOULD READ 35 - 45 MPH HIGHER THAN ACTUAL SPEED AND WOULD DROP LOWER. VEHICLE ALSO DRIVES POORLY AND SHAKES DURING LOWER SPEEDS. VEHICLE WAS PROMPTLY TAKEN TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS AT WHICH TIME THE DEALERSHIP NOTATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM SO THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE SPEEDOMETER PROBLEM. CONTINUED DRIVING VEHICLE AS IT DID NOT SEEM TO EFFECT DRIVING. 1 YEAR AND 5 MONTHS LATER, TRANSMISSION STARTED SHIFTING POORLY DURING COLD STARTS FOR AT LEAST 5 MINUTES UNTIL VEHICLE WARMS UP. TRANSMISSION WAS FLUSHED BY PERSONAL MECHANIC BUT PROBLEM CONTINUED. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT WHICH TIME VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP. REPORTED OLDER PROBLEM WITH SPEEDOMETER AS WELL AS NEW PROBLEMS WITH TRANSMISSION. DEALERSHIP STATED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS DUE TO RPM SENSOR MALFUNCTION AND THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND THAT THE SPEEDOMETER PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY THE BAD SENSOR AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS ORIGINALLY DISCOVERED. SAID BAD SENSOR LED TO TRANSMISSION FAILURE. WILL TAKE VEHICLE BACK TO ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP TO HAVE FIXED. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2006-03-09
- VIN: JTDBT1239Y0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA ECHO. I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL DESIGNATED: "SSC 40K - 2000 MODEL YEAR CELICA AND ECHO BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER INSPECTION SAFETY RECALL NOTICE". I TOOK THE CAR TO OXMOOR TOYOTA IN LOUISVILLE, KY BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL NOTICE WOULD NOT BE HONORED UNLESS I AGREED TO GIVE UP MY RIGHTS TO JUDICIAL REMEDIES IN FAVOR OF ARBITRATION. I REFUSED TO DO SO AND OXMOOR TOYOTA REFUSED TO HONOR THE RECALL NOTICE. OXMOOR TOYOTA IS LOCATED AT 8107 SHELBYVILLE ROAD, LOUISVILLE, KY 40222. I BELIEVE THAT THIS REFUSAL VIOLATES THE SPIRIT OF THE RECALL PROGRAM AND EFFECTIVELY DENIES ME THE RIGHT TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED. PLEASE ADVISE ME REGARDING NHTSA'S POSITION ON THIS MATTER. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-19
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: TODAY I WRITE TO YOU WITH THE SAME COMPLAINT REPORTED BY JB ON MARCH 9, 2002. LAST YEAR I WAS TOLD THE VERY SAME THING BY A TOYOTA SERVICE MECHANIC WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS EVALUATED. I HAVE A MECHANIC IN MY FAMILY WHO ANALYZED THE ENGINE, SENT IT TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST, AND FOUND THE TRANSMISSION TO BE IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. HOWEVER, WHEN I HAVE TO RENEW MY INSPECTION STICKER, THEY INFORMED ME IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY FAIL DUE TO THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! PLEASE INVESTIGATE AS I SUSPECT MANY MORE ECHO OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE JUST NOT REPORTED IT.*JB
2000 Toyota Echo recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2000 Toyota Echo.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:MASTER CYLINDER
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE RECESS RETAINS A RUBBER SEAL RING, WHICH IS LOCATED AT THE END OF THE CYLINDER BODY, AND MAY BE CORRODED DUE TO AN IMPROPER WASHING PROCESS.
- Consequence: IN THIS CONDITION, BRAKE FLUID MAY LEAK FROM THE SEAL, OR A SMALL AMOUNT OF AIR MAY ENTER THE MASTER CYLINDER, WHICH COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE OF VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER AND BOOSTER. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 29, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371.
- Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. DUE TO A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF CONDITIONS WHICH CONSIST OF COLD AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, LOAD APPLIED FROM AIR CONDITIONER AND OTHER ELECTRICAL DEVICES, AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VACUUM IN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD COULD BE INSUFFICIENT FOR THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
- Consequence: WHEN THE BRAKE IS APPLIED UNDER THIS COMBINATION OF CONDITIONS, VACUUM ASSIST TO THE BRAKES WOULD DECREASE, AND THE INCREASED PEDAL PRESSURE REQUIRED COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND FRONT BRAKE PADS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN OCTOBER 29, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

CONDENSED MOISTURE FROM THE POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) PORT COULD SEEP TOWARD THE BRAKE VACUUM PORT INSIDE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND START TO FREEZE.
- Consequence: VACUUM ASSIST TO THE BRAKES WOULD BE DECREASED AND INCREASED PEDAL PRESSURE WOULD BE REQUIRED, INCREASING THE VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VACUUM PORT. ALSO, OWNERS OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLES IN STATES OTHER THAN THE RECALL STATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL. IF THE ECHO OWNER BELIEVES THAT THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE VEHICLE WILL BE OPERATED IN THESE STATES DURING THE WINTER OR IN CONDITIONS DESCRIBED, THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE SERVICED FOR THIS RECALL.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new back in 2000 and, apart from a minor issue with the o2 sensor at the beginning, I haven't had to make any repairs since. I keep thinking about getting a new car, but honestly, why bother when this one has been so reliable?
Brandt Nienow 2024-11-22
I've had no problems with this car at all. I replaced two sensors over 101,100 miles, but other than that, the car is nearly flawless. It's comfortable even for tall people like myself. The dashboard design is simple and easy to view, and the stereo system is outstanding with six speakers. The gas mileage is phenomenal. I've owned many cars, and this is by far one of the cheapest, most fun to drive, and above all else, reliable. The low maintenance costs are a huge plus. I can't say enough about this car, except that I would buy another one if they still made them.
Rodger Deckow 2024-10-09
I purchased my little green Echo in August of its first year on the market. Although I was initially concerned about its recent release, I had faith in Toyota's reputation for quality and reliability. To this day, I still believe that it offers better value than nearly any other compact car available. The Echo is spacious, fuel-efficient, and responsive, with excellent acceleration. While it can be affected by strong winds or large vehicles passing by, I have very few complaints about this car!

I'm 57, and I have owned many cars. However, nothing even comes close to the Echo. It's been ten years since I bought it, and it still gets gas mileage close to a hybrid. All I have to do is change the oil and tires, and it just keeps going.

When my boyfriend totalled my old Carolla, I had no idea what was out there, and checked just about everything. The minute I got into the Echo it felt great, and it has continued to be great for the last 2 years. It's a fantastic car for the price, with great reliability, no problems, and amazing gas mileage (even in stop-and-go traffic). Plus, it has surprising amounts of space for such a small looking car! It even helped me move half of my apartment, and handles LA traffic like a champ. I would highly recommend it.
