2019 Honda Insight problems

The Honda Insight (ホンダ・インサイト, Honda Insaito) is a hybrid electric vehicle that is manufactured and marketed by Honda. Its first generation was a two-door, two passenger liftback (1999–2006) and in its second generation was a four-door, five passenger liftback (2009–2014). In its third generation, it became a four-door sedan (2018–2022). It was Honda's first model with Integrated Motor Assist system and the most fuel efficient gasoline-powered car available in the U.S. without plug-in capability — for the length of its production run.
Honda introduced the second-generation Insight in Japan in February 2009 and in the United States on March 24, 2009. The Insight was the least expensive hybrid available in the US. In December 2010, Honda introduced a less expensive base model for the 2011 model year. The Insight was launched in April 2009 in the UK as the lowest priced hybrid on the market and became the best selling hybrid for the month.
The Insight ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for the month of April 2009, a first for a hybrid model. During its first twelve months after first available in the Japanese market, the second-generation Insight sold 143,015 units around the world. In July 2014, Honda announced the end of production of the Insight for the 2015 model, together with the Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel-cell car and the Honda Fit EV electric car.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Honda announced the third-generation Honda Insight prototype, based on the tenth-generation Honda Civic sedan. Unlike the previous Insight, it was a traditional sedan, not a five-door liftback. The third-generation Insight went on sale later that year.
In April 2022, Honda announced that the Insight would be discontinued after the 2022 model year, with production ending in June. It has been replaced by a new Civic Hybrid.

Common 2019 Honda Insight problems
The Honda Insight, known for its fuel efficiency and reliability, has had some common problems reported by owners, particularly in certain model years. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the battery system, particularly in earlier models like the 2000-2006 Insight. These battery problems can lead to unexpected failures and replacements.
Another issue that has been reported is related to the transmission, especially in the 2012 model. Drivers have experienced rough shifting or even total transmission failure in severe cases.
Electrical glitches, including problems with power windows and door locks, have been occasional concerns for Honda Insight owners as well.
For the 2019 Honda Insight, some owners have reported issues with the regenerative braking system.
In terms of the 2019 Honda Insight's performance, it has been noted for its efficient and high-tech features, with a 1.5-liter inline-4 engine and an electric motor that generates a combined power rating of 151 hp.
In conclusion, while the Honda Insight is generally a reliable and fuel-efficient vehicle, it is essential to be aware of potential issues, particularly in certain model years. Regular maintenance, inspections, and consulting with a knowledgeable mechanic can help ensure a satisfying ownership experience.

- VIN: 19XZE4F91KE
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle a/c system did not effectively cool cabin in warm weather on long drives. Last trip there were white particles coming from the vents. There is a known issue with the systems and Honda extended the warranty on a/c system due to problem condensors. Brought it to a dealer who found that the evaporator was leaking causing refrigerant to enter cabin area. Dealer quoted over $1500 to replace a part that was defective from the factory. Vehicle is out of bumper to bumper warranty and Honda has refused to cover the repairs.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- VIN: 19XZE4F51KE
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: While driving on or around September 4th, 2024, a warning light appeared on my dashboard. The warning stated “Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Problem. See Your Dealer.” I took my car to Hare Honda for an inspection and service on September 18th, 2024, and was informed that the diagnostic process would need the car to be in the shop overnight. I rescheduled my diagnostic service for September 26, 2024. On the 26th, I received a notification regarding the diagnostic test and the warning turned out to be an internal issue with the Air Bag Control Module and it needed to be replaced. The cost for this replacement was quoted at $1,353.91. I tried searching for any recalls for my vehicle and could not find any active ones. I dug a little deeper and found out that Honda has a safety recall for the same SRS issue regarding the module used to deploy airbags. The NHTSA recall number is 18V664000 and the Honda recall numbers are B2R, C2P, and Z2Q. I tried searching for a place to claim that my car should be part of a recall that is no longer active, but I could not find a place to submit a claim for it until I found the reporting tool for the NHTSA. Any assistance would be appreciated, especially because this seems to be part of the same part that had a recall in the past and I was not notified. Looking forward to hearing from anyone! I will likely have to approve the service because I am using my car for an extended road journey on October 3rd. 2024.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-23
- VIN: 19XZE4F56KE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I am writing to report a potentially serious safety issue with my vehicle. My car recently had its fuel pump replaced/repaired as part of a recall. However, only about 2 years after this recall repair, my car stopped accelerating while I was driving. This left me and my toddler stranded in the middle of the road in 110 degrees, creating a dangerous situation for us and other drivers. I took the vehicle to the dealership, where they diagnosed that the fuel pump needs to be replaced again. This is concerning as fuel pumps are typically expected to last up to 100,000 miles, and mine was just recently replaced/repaired due to the recall. This incident has caused significant hardship: It put my child and me in a potentially dangerous roadside situation. I lost a day's wages due to being unable to get to work. I am now faced with paying for over a thousand dollars of repairs, as I have no other option. I need my vehicle to get to work and transport my child. I am concerned that there may be a persistent issue with the fuel pumps in this vehicle model, or that the recall repair was not performed adequately. My Honda Service Consultant mentioned that there was a Honda bulletin letting them know of this sort of problem in cars that my make/model/year falls under and beckoned to another car with seemingly the same issue. This leaves me wondering why a, to all intents and purposes, common issue is a bulletin for instead of a recall. I request that the NHTSA investigate this matter to ensure the safety of other drivers who may have had the same recall repair. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
- VIN: 19XZE4F59KE
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I received a letter from Honda indicating a recall for the fuel pump impeller. The only thing Honda failed to say was for me to go to a dealership to get this fixed. Instead they sent a letter saying that they know the recall is needed but they didn’t know when they would have the piece available. I believe the letter was received in January 2024. Still to this date I haven’t received a letter from Honda indicating to take my vehicle in for repair. I am not sure how Honda is not prioritizing this as according to their letter our cars can stall while driving causing an accident. I would like my vehicle fixed as I don’t want to drive everyday and worry that my car will stall and possibly kill me. I have felt my gas pedals to feel weird as there’s times that I push the gas and my car accelerates too fast and there are times when I take my foot off the gas pedal it like shakes a little. My car has been feeling very different with regards to the gas pedal. I am concerned that it has to do with the recall.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We live in a suburban/rural area that now has lots of traffic, but is more open than city driving. Our car has been performing really well, with about 3,000 miles on it now and in the summer we got up to 57 mpg with most tanks averaging over 50. Although the mileage has dropped to about 47 during the winter, we still find it to be quite efficient. We generally don't use the Eco mode as it is too gutless. We bought the EX model and although we miss the heated seats and leather wrapped wheel of the Touring, we still feel the EX model was right for our needs. The seats are comfortable and the tech is adequate or better. Overall, this has been a great car for a daily driver which was why we got it. It's cheap to drive, looks great, performs well and is safe. It's a perfect car for local driving, but wouldn't be a first choice for a long road trip. The only negative being Honda's blind side lane alert system which could be improved. We hope Honda can make it simpler and more effective in the future. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us!

I've only had the car for two weeks, but it has exceeded my expectations. While the acceleration may not be on par with the average sedan, it's important to remember that it is a hybrid. However, it still manages to surprise most people, especially those who have driven a Prius before. It handles like a Civic, which is a good thing in my opinion, and is snappy and tight around corners with next to no body roll. Even on rough roads, the ride is still acceptably smooth. I drive about 26 miles each way to and from work each day on hilly backroads, and I'm averaging around 48mpg, which is impressive. The infotainment system is great, with Google Auto, YouTube music subscription, Audible, and Waze/GoogleMaps all working together seamlessly. The display is a good size, making it easy to hit controls without having to search for them while driving. Lastly, I get a lot of compliments on the looks of the car, which is always a nice bonus.

I think Honda did an amazing job with the Insight, it's a real competitor to the Prius. I have the EX (middle) trim and find the seats comfortable enough, although lumbar support would be a nice addition. The rear view camera is very wide angle and you can see vehicles coming from relatively far away, but rear cross traffic detection and proper blind spot monitoring would be great features to have. One thing I miss about my previous car, a Honda Fit, is the hatchback and how practical it was. The Insight is more work and hassle when it comes to loading and unloading large items, but driving it to and from Costco is definitely more pleasant and upscale. The fuel economy is excellent, although using the AC in hotter weather may reduce gas mileage by 5 to 10 MPG. The ride quality is very good and relatively quiet, especially when the gas engine is not running. The acceleration is good and the Insight is fast, responsive, and smooth from a stop. The brake hold feature is also a great addition. I appreciate that there is no transmission in the car, instead it has an The Insight is a fantastic compact sedan that also happens to be a hybrid. At speeds of 45 MPH and higher, the gas engine can directly power the wheels, and you'll see a gear appear in the power flow screen. Otherwise, the gas engine mainly generates electricity for the electric motor and charges the small lithium-ion battery pack under the rear seat, so it doesn't take up any trunk space. I highly recommend upgrading to the middle trim (EX) for just a little more money than the LX (lowest) trim. With the EX, you'll get some serious upgrades, including a much better Infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, remote start, walk-away door locks, and more. If you're considering the highest trim (Touring), keep in mind that it's significantly more expensive and you'll lose some fuel economy. Consider whether the added luxury features, like leather, are really worth it to you. Lastly, the Insight looks much better than the Prius!

I recently traded in my 2013 Ford Focus due to transmission issues. I had been searching for a new car that met all my requirements, including some form of electrification, LED headlights, smartphone integration technologies, and active safety assistive tools. When Honda announced the return of the Insight, I was excited to learn about all the standard equipment it would have. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not as expensive as I had anticipated. Unlike the Prius, the Insight has a normal-looking design that I appreciate. I am grateful to Honda for exceeding my expectations with this car. I am confident that it will last for years and become a reliable option for my household. The hybrid setup of the Insight does not include a formal transmission, which I find appealing. I live in a mostly flat town with lots of city driving, so my MPG is great. I try to be polite on the road and skimp on the gas pedal, which is paying off greatly. My Insight is about to turn 1, and I have already driven over 15K miles without any issues. It is a flawless ride every day. I have driven long distances, including from Tallahassee to Boca Raton, New Orleans, and Jacksonville, and the car has been smooth and pleasant to drive. The car feels and looks upscale, and people often mistake it for an Acura. My husband drives a Jetta and wishes his gas tanks were as cheap as mine, which lasts around 12 days with mostly city driving. I average 48MPG and have been able to drive from Orlando to Tallahassee (a 4-hour drive) with just one tank of gas, going at 70 mph. Anything over that and it chugs more fuel, and I would have to stop for gas. An update at 42K miles:It's great to hear that you're enjoying your Honda! According to the Edmunds appraise section, the value of your car has increased to more than what you owe on it, which is fantastic news. It's no surprise that you've had interest from potential buyers, but it's clear that you have a strong attachment to your vehicle. The Honda is an amazing product that requires only one or two services a year to maintain, and it becomes more efficient with time. If Honda continues to electrify their cars, you'll never want to go back to regular ICE vehicles. It's definitely the best product in the segment out in the market! It's wonderful to hear that you're so pleased with your first Honda, and we're confident that it won't be your last.

The interior is very quiet, which allows the wonderful stereo to sound even more awesome. The handling and ride quality are a real pleasure. I'm happy to report that I'm averaging more than 51 mpg over more than 1,400 miles of mixed highway, twisty mountain roads and city driving. What's even better is that when I'm stuck in stop and go traffic, the MPG improves! I have a favorite breakfast place about 20 miles from my home and the Insight is averaging about 65mpg on the trip there. I was initially disturbed by the engine noise when going up a hill, but I'm either getting used to it or it's getting better with more miles on the car. I have been pleasantly surprised with the acceleration when entering the freeway, the Insight moves briskly when it needs to. One thing I would like to mention is the Lane Assist technology - on several occasions when trying to change lanes, the car will suddenly brake, and there are no cars or other obstacles in front of me - it can be a bit scary. As a result, I have been canceling Lane Assist and ACC when I know that I might need to exit the freeway or change lanes in order to avoid the unexpected, and unwarranted braking.

In 2019, I purchased a car that consistently achieves an impressive 48-51 mpg, even when using the AC. While I did experience some minor fit and finish issues, they were resolved by 5/3. Recently, I encountered an issue where the car was revving and stalling, and I received a 'Power System Failure, Do Not Drive' warning. I had the car towed to the Honda dealer, where they diagnosed a failure of the fuel injection relay and fuel pump. Despite my previous experience with European cars, I chose Honda for their reputation of reliability. While this experience was frustrating, I am confident that it was an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall quality of the brand. It is worth noting that my 1977 VW camper has never stranded me, but I still have faith in my Honda.

I was disappointed when Toyota changed the design of the Prius and didn't want to spend over $30K for a car that seemed to have cheap materials on the interior. So, I decided to check out the Honda Insight, which I thought would be the next best thing. I test drove both the 2019 Insight and the 2018 Prius on the same day and found that the Insight had better comfort, ride, interior styling, and comparable gas mileage, making it a better value. However, I encountered some issues with the car. Before I hit 1200 miles, a warning light came on, indicating that I had

I've had my 2019 Insight touring for 4 months now and I have to say I'm a bit disappointed with the fuel mileage. Despite the car being advertised as achieving great mileage, I haven't been able to break the 36MPG threshold. In comparison, a friend of mine beats that all day long with his 2018 Civic! My daily commute is a 65 mile round trip, with a mix of highway and city driving. I usually cruise at 72-75MPH with mostly flat terrain along my commute. Winter here in Wisconsin is rough, and I do use the remote start for a 5 min warm up, then set the ClimateC at 69 and use the heated seats. Before purchasing the car, the salesman let me take it out for a few hour test drive. Upon leaving the dealership, I reset the OD and waited to observe results with mixed driving. After a few hours of driving, I noticed I could not break 38MPG no matter what I was doing. The dealer explained that winter blended fuels and the air density/cold weather could be affecting the mileage. Confused, I ended up doing a similar test drive with a 2019 Prius XLE averaging 52MPG along a similar route a few days later. In the end, I chose the Insight because it's a better looking car and has a more upscale feel. Despite the terrible droning the ICM makes transitioning off power and the sub-par hybrid mileage, I'm hoping to see some major improvements come April. If not, I'll be one unhappy Honda customer. It's just a shame that I was getting 32MPG with my tuned 2013 Accord 2.4L Manual Trans, which is just insane. Only 3 more MPG in a new high tech Hybrid? Honda could learn a thing or two from Toyota's technologies.

Very nice car! It looks great and is technologically up to date. While it can be a little noisy at highway speeds, that is to be expected. However, the gas mileage could be improved. Perhaps the EV mode could be adjusted to better balance the engine and battery usage. I have noticed that in the last 30 days, I have only been getting 35 highway and 46 city, which is a bit disappointing. The mileage was much better before December 1st, and I'm not quite sure what changed. Overall, I still enjoy the car and am hopeful that the gas mileage can be improved.
